[Q] Need some help unrooting my phone - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

I rooted my phone back in January because I wanted to try out some of the different ROMs, but I never found anything that was as trouble-free as stock. Now I'm having trouble getting the OTA updates to work, and I'm looking to just go back to stock and reset my counter just in case I need to return the phone. What I'm worried about is losing all of my application data and settings and having to reinstall and set everything up again. Is there a way to do a complete reset but keep all my stuff? Every guide I've seen requires a factory reset at some point, and if I'm not rooted I won't be able to use TB to restore my apps.
Do I just need to grit my teeth and spend the few hours setting everything back up and losing all my app data?

Backup with titanium.
Flash stock firmware from sammy with odin.
Use cf autoroot to root.
Use tibu to restore.
Unroot with SU app
Profit
Also I think koush developed an app to backup that doesnt need root.
Edit: here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup

That makes perfect sense. Do you know if that would mess with the OTA updates after unrooting? I want to make sure my phone is in returnable condition after it's all said and done (triangle-away'd and everything).

Use triangle away before unrooting with SU. Wipe data/factory reset after unrooting. Then restore apps/data with koushs app (link above)

I was originally on a stock ROM (it was my nandroid backup from when I was trying out new ones), but I could never get the status back to original. I tried a factory reset, and that didn't do the trick (updates still wouldn't load), so I used Odin to flash the original stock ROM. I made sure to backup my apps with Helium, then restored them all after going through the whole setup/download process. Everything seems to be working fine, and I was able to get the multi-window update, but I can't see if the current update will work yet (I still have to wait 24 hours).
So in the end I didn't have to unroot or triangle away (at least not any further than I already did).

If you already received one OTA you can receive any OTA
You can disable network provided values and manually change the date one day ahead. Then you can check for updates again.

Backup without root?

So I've been considering rooting my phone, but have been hesitant since we might be getting an ICS OTA update any week now. I was hoping to allay some of these fears by backing up the device before rooting...only to discover that it seems every backup app requires root. This is a lovely little catch 22 that makes me all the more hesitant to root.
Are there any other options?
Well, I think that titanium backup not need the root. (I didnt remember exactly because when I installed it my phone had been rooted before).
You can backup data, settings, app, etc, etc, etc.
There are some phones that have an app that makes backups.
Why dont you try to root your phone? There are a lot of incredibles things that you can do having it rooted.

Titanium backup definitely requires root...
Are you looking to strictly back-up your apps, or something like a nandroid backup?
Removing root from an otherwise fully stock install is very simple. Root then do a full Nandroid backup and then do whatever you want. If you want to get the OTA at some point simply restore the Nandroid then unroot and you are good to go.
Within a day of the OTA coming out there will be a rooted stock ROM available anyway so not really sure what the issue is.
Mybackup works without root.

I surely wouldn't count on a ics ota anytime soon. Coming from the og epic I can tell you for sure that sprint + Samsung = don't hold your breath for a ota, even if it has been promised. Go ahead and root. Add has been stated mybackup will work without root. I suggest trying calks ROM, rock solid stable and great battery life.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
doesn't sfhub have an autoroot package for el29 that preserves data?and its not the root that makes ota fail. its the addition of cwm in the kernel as ota needs stock recovery to update. what you could do is use the auto root and backup using titanium backup. then if you want a nandroid also you can flash a rogue kernel. like gunslinger. nandroid. then flash the stock kernel from calkulins thread that has the el29 rom in it. not his normal one. I will link to it when I get home
here is the place you can grab an el29 stock kernel with no clockworkmod.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429243
here is where you will find an autoroot for your rom. choose the one that preserves data.

from 4.0.4 to 4.1 + TitatiumBackup

Hi,
I am on 4.0.4 and I regurarly backup with Titaniumbackup both apps and system data.
If I manually update to 4.1 (which means a total factory reset of the phone) will I be able to import back the above backups and get the phone as it was before the upgrade.
I am not really worried about the apps but about the system data, as they may have changed.
Thanks
You can restore apps and user data. Do not restore system data.

well then I'm gonna wait for official JB OTA... Don't wanna spend another 2 hours re-configuring my phone :-(
btw, any official root method for JB, just to prepare in advance... I have Voodo OTA rootKeeper but not sure if it'll work...
If you're using titanium backup with encrypted stuff, you'll have to wait for a jb update.
Also, if you're trying to uninstall anything from /system/app/ you'll also have to wait for a jb update for titanium backup.
Supposedly basic backup and restore of tb is working.

What takes 2 hours to configure?? Email accounts and settings, WiFi settings, BT settings, etc, are all downloaded once you sign into your Google account. If you use a third-party sound manager, alarm clock and launcher, all those settings would be restored when you restore from Titanium. What else is left??

well upgrade + restore + some configurations that cannot be backedup (home screen icons placement, alarms, etc.) may take up to a couple of hours...
pls, I have just realised that the JB rom here on xda is deodexed whioch means no future OTA updates...
I can wait till the official JB OTA, in the meantime the new gnex toolkit compatible with JB will be ready and right after the upgrade in one click I can re-unlock and re-root

1) The ROM here is not deodexed: http://tinyurl.com/JRN84D
2) If you rely on a toolkit to do things for you, you will never learn anything and more importantly, it will make it harder to troubleshoot if you have issues.

1] thanks do i still have to install the radio first?
2] I had an HD2 with android before the gnex, so I do know how to do things manually, and my first unlock/root on my gnex I did manually... simply since 1 month I wake up at 6am, commute for 1h, wotk for another 9 hours and then back home at 8pm... so honestly I have no time at all to waste on my phone considering i prefer wasting it with my wife, my bike, my scubadiving, etc... ;-) so yes the toolkit is a timesaver for me ;-)
You really shouldn't ever restore system data. It's just asking for trouble.

1) Yes, I would. I would also install the bootloader. See the second post of the "flash" link in my signature.
2) I hear ya. But what I was trying to say is that: a) doing it yourself is NOT any slower than a toolkit if you know what you are doing, and b) it will be faster to fix (in the event of any issues) if you don't use a toolkit.

btw, I am rooted and i have CWM installed: does it mean that with CWM i won't get the OTA?
I can confirm that restoring system data from 4.0.4 to 4.1 will not work fully. I did that last week and google now wasn't working properly, and there were some syncing issues with other applications (grey wifi and data bars)
I also don't think its that much of a hassle to have to re-setup stuff. Each time you do it, it gets quicker . Plus sometimes I make improvements to homescreen/widget setup.

You should never restore system data across different builds, only across the same build.
You should always do a full wipe before taking a full system ota. It is no different then flashing a rom... you can set the rom not to wipe data either but lots of things will get screwed up.
If you have such a complex setup that you never want to wipe data then you should just stay on the same build and be happy
Can anyone tell me what exactly restoring system data does? I noticed 4.1 comes with its own google maps and such but i also restored it from 4.0.4. Does that mean I'm running 4.0.4 apps?

It's fine to restore system data when going from a 4.0.4 ROM to a 4.0.4 ROM. But you are asking for trouble (FC's, crashes, bootloops, etc.) by restoring system data from one version of a ROM to another (like from 4.0.4 to 4.1).
so to be safe, i should only choose restore missing apps with data option? I don't see any other option that excludes system data.

If you're doing a batch restore in Titanium it will not include system apps. So, yes, restore missing apps with data should be fine. Titanium is smart enough to not let you mass restore system apps.
I have been able to upgrade from a full stock 4.0.4 to the 4.1 shown in ROM manager without wiping more than cache.

Revert from stock 4.2.2 to stock 4.1.2

Hello everybody,
I'm thinking about to speed up my phone again as it was in the past. Those 4.2 Features are pretty poor compared to the slowness they bringing into our phone.
I was very satisfied with 4.1.2 it was like made for gnex only and not for hardwaremonster like n4.
So my question:
Is there any possibility to flash stock rom 4.1.2 and get all the data from 4.2.2 so i dont have to set up everything from scratch?
Maybe an app that sync with a cloud or something else like full backup of the settings and appsettings and so on.
And after that the system should not push the notification about new updates.
thanks
greetz from germany
You could flash the stock image from Google.

I always do nandroid backup first....no root needed, just custom recovery. Then flashing new factory image (full wipe) , copying everything back to sdcard...and finally restoring backup.
I would say root for the purposes of baking up to cloud with tibu, then flash, root, restore, unroot if you want to.

[Q] Can I root my phone with these prefrences?

Hello!
I am HeroCC, this is my first post, so please don't go hard on me.
I may root my android AT&T S3. But before I do, I want to make sure it is safe, and it fits my specifications.
First of all, I want to know how to do it. If you know a decent tutorial about this, please send it my way.
I have heard about clockwork mod, and was wondering if that is a good choice for a root ROM.
Here is my list:
Does not remove any data
I have a 100% backup before
I can Undo at any time, and I will still have all app data, but not rooted*
It does not trip the flash counter
I still have all the stock apps. (Kies air, AT&T Locker, etc.)
I will add more when I think of some. Thanks for any help!
If you find something that does not fit one of these, reply anyway. Some of these I can do without.
*For example, if I am at level 5 now, and get to level 50 in candy crush, and need to unroot, I will still be at level 50 after.
Thank you for your Help!
There are at least three different ways to root this phone, with; casual, cf-auto root, or by flashing TWRP or CWM recovery through Odin and then supersu.zip. I'm not going to recommend one root method here because someone else will just recommend the other and confuse things.
You are likely going to trip the flash counter no matter what you do, but you can reset it to zero whenever you want with an app called triangle away.
Also, you will need the app titanium backup to backup your apps and settings, so if you unroot or factory reset, you can restore them without losing your data.

Just a note, backing up and restoring with titanium backup ONLY works with root. Say you backup while rooted, unroot, then find missing data, you can't restore the titanium backup since no root anymore..

None of them require a factory reset.
Technically, modifying the phone's software in any way can void your warranty, and technically you are not rooted until you have modified the phone to obtain superuser permissions through the operating system. I'm assuming that you want a backup before obtaining superuser permissions, or rooting. The only way would be to flash a custom recovery through Odin, which also modifies the phone and trips its flash counter, which signals that you modified something and still voids your warranty. That flash counter can be reset later, however.
So to answer your second question;
Can you make a backup of your phone before rooting? Technically, Yes.
But can you make a backup of your whole phone without modifying the phone in any way and possibly endangering your warranty? No.

OK. Thanks. This is what I needed. I will now list my plan of action. Let me know it you think it is good! My device is the Galaxy s3 ATT. I just realized that my warranty expires in December. I thought it already had, so I am going to wait until it is done. This is what I am going to do in December.
1. Download Rom Manager
2. Use Carbon/ Helium to backup.
3. Use ROM Manager to install ClockWork mod Recovery.
4. Perform Nandroid backup.
5. (Optional) install CyanogenMod.
I will add more as I think of them. And all of the above will work without a factory reset? Thanks!
Unrelated: Is there a z4mod for my phone? I saw it had temp root and may use that to use titanium backup before I start this.

If you are not rooted you will not be able to use ROM manager or any other app to install a custom recovery. You need to use ODIN to achieve this without root. Since you are on Jellybean most likely, going into a custom recovery will trip your counter no matter what. I would highly recommend using CF auto root to root since you lose no data. It will trip your counter but this is likely to happen no matter what you do.

You can easily root your phone without tripping your counter. There are so many parts on this, and exactly what you're talking about. Just read the forum posts and everything is answered.

No.
@crazyVato, sorry, i meant to expand on that answer but got distracted.
for what you want to do and actually save as a backup you need to be rooted WITH custom recovery.
So long as your system is intact you can repeat the process of customizing but what's
wiped is gone. =(

I have a lot of empathy for your situation. Not many things give you that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach, but this is definitely one of them.
I am no expert but everything that I know tells me that there is no way to restore your device back the way way you had it.
I'm not certain which files remain intact following a factory reset but some do remain. Is it possible that once you rooted you made a backup that you don't remember making? It wouldn't hurt to reroot and poke around for a clockwork folder. SD Maid will also help find big files, in case a backup was stored in mnt/shell.
Best of luck to you.
