Date And Time on Fire TV - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just downloaded OS5 Preview. Does anyone know how Fire TV sinks its time and date? This is affecting Medihhh and Sling which require the correct time and date for the application. When I first updated it was stuck on August 2nd at 7:33AM PDT. I rebooted my Cable Modem and Router which at least got it to the correct date but even set to my correct Timezone PDT it is still running 3 hours slow?

I had to go into Time Zone in Settings and change it to the right time. and then reboot it. I think I might've even rebooted my router, I can't remember. I do know it was completely out of whack and took a while to sync properly.

setting the time via adb doesn’t work either

Did you got into the Fire's settings and change the Time Zone?

yes I have, and rebooted multiple times, no result.. I decided to wait some time to let it sync.
Date on my Fire TV is 4 august 2015...

Interesting: that's the date it says mine was updated.

I had to switch to wireless and check for a system update. Again this morning after coming out of sleep mode I had to repeat this step. Why would switching to wireless make any difference over wired? Strange!

strange - I have not problem on my FireTV stick and OS5 preview
date and time is always showing correct

Amazon fire stick won't let me change date or time

Have a 4K fire stick. Time and date cannot be changed manually as its way out of sync date by 9 days and time by 16 hours any idea on how to change it manually. Time zones are correct est.

If I'm not mistaken UK units are shipping with the latest firmware.
But you don't need root to install xbmc.
Cool. Thanks. I'll boot it up and get it on.

Follow this guide: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-setup-a-new-fire-tv-without-blocking-root/
Let us know what firmware it came with.
Also got the FTV (UK): 51.1.40_user_514005520
I am assuming this is un-rootable?
can't seem to get xbmc/spmc to work on the UK version
it gets to the first run stage and then goes back to the applications part of settings...
i'm not bothered about root, but without xbmc this device is pointless for me...!
XBMC Works but not many add ons

I can install and do most things with XBMC, but Icefilms or 1Channel cannot get to the content.
icefilms should work right? im in UK and it loads up on windows without spoofing IP
glad i imported the US version

Are you positive that is your software version number? Others have reported getting 51.1.4.0_user_514006420, which is different from your version .

Yep, 100% positive. However, it was trying to update to the version you have mentioned - which I cancelled. Also, have problems with XBMC - which does not launch.

Did it update to 51.1.40_user_514005520 during the initial setup, or were you somehow able to get through setup without updating?

I managed to get past the intial setup by pulling the ethernet connection method. Then went through the non-skip intro video etc. Whilst I was checking on the System tab; noticed that it was downloading the update and had the version number quoted by you. I had the option to cancel the update, which I did - the progress bar was around the half way mark.
Would it be possible to set up a fake update server providing an old version during the initial setup?
Or is that useless with the units that are being shipped out now?

Wow. You're blowing my mind. Nobody has been able to get past the initial update with a Fire TV running 51.1.3.0 or newer. Either 51.1.40_user_514005520 is unlike all the other 51.1.3.0+ versions (meaning it does not refuse to proceed when it can't reach the update server), or you did something different that got you past the update.
Can you recall exactly what you did and when?

No. It's been discussed multiple times. The communications is both encrypted and signed.

It's possible the forced flag wasn't set. It seems to not be an across the board thing for different versions. Remember, the german units shipped with the first 51.1.3.0 version and forced the update to the 2nd while the US units that were updated to the first 51.1.3.0 didn't have a forced update to the newer one.

I wasn't aware that someone with the first 51.1.3.0 in the US was able to get past an update during initial setup. Do you recall if it came with the first 51.1.3.0 brand new or if it was just factory reset with the first 51.1.3.0?

Hrm, that's a good point. I don't know if it acts differently on a factory reset/fresh install vs just an update. I was talking about when we updated to the first 51.1.3.0 it seemed like all the german boxes were forcing to the second while we werent. But I don't think I ever tried a factory reset at that point.

I'm starting to get more and more convinced that there is a difference between a first time setup and a factory reset, as far as forced updates are concerned. Either that or the German versions of 51.1.3.0 are somehow different from the US versions.
I know for sure that factory reseting a Fire TV running the first 51.1.3.0 will get past the blocked update to the second 51.1.3.0. I did this myself just the other day. Of course, that Fire TV did not come with 51.1.3.0.
Come to think of it, I don't think I've heard of anyone in the US getting anything above 51.1.1.0 on a new Fire TV.

Surprisingly, I did what was suggested on your site (I assume it is yours?). Anyways, I will try to remember the exact steps:
Powered the box without a network connection.
Paired remote and chose the language
IIRC, then there was the option to choose the network via Wi-fi
Plugged in the Ethernet connection
The box almost immediately picked up my registration details or pre-registered details?
Instantly pulled the Ethernet connection
I had a quick look around the menu system to familiarise myself
I went to System to check the version; it was and still is as I stated
Plugged the Ethernet back in
Noticed it was trying to update, whilst I was playing around trying to disable the dcp update via PC
Cancelled the update
The box has been sitting idle for a good few hours and not trying to update itself. I don't know the implications of this; my sole reason was to stop any further updates in case of a solution in the near future.
I'm annoyed with it. Can't even use NBC Sports Live App.... I can't press the play button with the remote, yet it's an app on the amazon store... So it's an app, I can't do anything with.
Tried an android controller, doesn't work - need root for that.
TBH, I thinking of sending it back and just doing what I done before. Downloading everything and sticking it on USB straight into the tele.

Unable to Root Series 2, ok with Series 3. Change in method from earlier

I got three firetv's from staples local store as I needed for my family. I have done this with other firetv's in the past but already spoilt two by getting them updated to the latest firmware.
1. I had checked the serial numbers before buying and they were original rootable versions.
2. I couldn't get past the forced update and the blocked sites on the router would not let me proceed.
3. I did the timing thing but that too didn't work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzDiViqXdSg. So I let it update hoping it would do the update inclemently but it didn't. It updated to latest.
How are folks doing it now. Are the guides still valid. I have the last one still packed. I feel so bad.
---- My findings from a later post:
In my quest for today, here is what I have found. Note: I've done about 15 or so rooted firetv's but at the moment things aren't the same as it used to be.
1. If you get an old stock for example serial series of 2. They will have a very old firmware which USED to increment but they don't now. They go directly to the latest firmware thus loosing root. I went through 4 of these series today and none of them could be bypassed with the Ethernet trick. (709002XX)
2. Series 3 (70900305/303) is bypassable with the Ethernet trick to boot up. I've seen two versions of series 3. One which requires a downgrade and the other that doesn't before going up. IMO downgrade is a much easier task vs rooting.
Bestbuys have lots of series 3. So if anyone needs a version that should be rooted, head to bestbuy 91303. I'm sure other area's too have the series 3. Staples has a mix of mostly Series 2 and a few Series 3.
Hope this helps.
At this point now you wont ever root this fire tv.
I had same problem on one of the fire tvs i had to block amazon updates in my router to get passed the check for updates screen.
No root for you now.
On your another fire tv make sure to be patient and research first.. Do not at any point update if you have rootable version.

I got to the old firmware on the third one. The other two that updated I returned it. I now have another one with rootable and I'm trying to not let it update. but the removal of the Ethernet cord trick is not working. I've blocked the three sites on my router as well. What to do. I don't want to mess up this one. I don't get the message checking for updates, it straight starts to download it, I didn't let it download. I removed the Ethernet. and rebooted but the same process starts again.
In the instructions it says it may do an incremental update but I don't want to take the risk again, the last time it wasn't incremental. It updated to the latest. I've done so many but this seems harder every day.
I can't get past this screen
Your Amazon Fire TV requires an update.
Please do not disconnect from the network or unplug the power cable while we download the update.

Block amazon updates in your router.
Like I mentioned I had exact same issues I thought I couldn't root this AFTV.
Here is what I did:
I blocked amazon updates in my fios router, connected AFTV to fios router ( I use 2 routers)
when I plugged in back AFTV it tried to update.. it failed after sometime : Make sure it does not if you did it wrong.
I then rebooted AFTV and I got past the update screen.
Try that!
That's unusual. Just 2 weeks ago pulling the Ethernet cord got me to registration page in one shot. I don't get why it's not working? Even if updates weren't blocked via the router, I thought that initial trick of unplugging made aftv think there was no update or it already had been updated.

I totally understand. I've done loads of firetv's and the new ones even with the old firmwares are getting hard. I just made one today. I need to make 2 more. I messed up 2 so returned them and now on the new one, I've blocked the update and can't get past the Ethernet trick.
Does anyone know how to read wireshark which file is it downloading ? that would be helpful.

Just followed the guides all of them still work.
I've never needed to but can't you enable logging on your router? I'd think that would be simpler than wireless shark, which I thought was more for larger business networks.
Agreed the guides still work but it's differnt now. I had total of 4 today and two went to the latest version hoping it would increment update.
This new one is stuck wanting to update and I cannot play the Ethernet trick.
Never faced this much of difficulty. I also tried recovery android and cleared and factory reset but still no luck
Any suggestions I can try.? I don't want to risk the update as I feel it will update to the latest. I cannot figure wire shark. I've tried seeing the traffic on the firetv ip but can't figure out Which file it is pulling down . I'm so tired of family asking for the firetv and I feel if making one then might as well get the rooted ones for google play etc.
One observation here is if you let the software begin to download and then remove the Ethernet, the next time it tries to resume and not restart unless you do the recovery and clean factory.
I removed amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net from the blocked sites to let it start the rom download to see which one it is downloading but still couldn't figure it out form the router logs here. can someone help please. I'm so lost here.

I believe it's the timing of when you unplug the ethernet cable. Because it happen to me with my first firetv. I couldn't get to bypass the update. So I let it update and hope it does the increment updated. But that didnt work. After going through thru a few more firetv. I notice that firetv that has older firmware. Is easier to bypass versus those later one that you have to downgrade. What I did was once the light turn white and the update screen pop up. Then I unplug. Before I just unplug very fast once the light turn white without seeing the update screen.
Oh yeah another thing. when u do manage to bypass it and get to the whole intro video. Remember to keep that thing unplug or disconnect from the internet. I had one firetv updated on me after the video was done playing and I had all 3 url block on my router.

Yeah I understand, until I disable the amazon updates, I constantly remove the Ethernet just to be safe. As per today's experience, the old series 2x which has the initial firmware cannot be bypassed. I tried for hours but couldn't get it to bypass. I even tried recovery by clearing the cache etc, stopped half way through the download. none worked. I even updated two of them hoping for the incremental update but that failed too and reached the latest.
Thanks for helping out, but in my opinion, the safest rooting is series 3 with unplugging the Ethernet. The Downgrade process is straight forward if you have all the files in place.

Request: NetFlix apk for FireTV released before August 10th 2015

Netflix pushed a build on 10th Aug, 2015 and whatever they did, it's messed up VPN via Smart DNS servers on the FireTV via CactusVPN, the version before that did not have this problem. I've googled everywhere, can't seem to find the build released before it anywhere. Anybody got the apk anywhere? Want to try with the old build before switching to another vpn provider. Cactus insist the issue is not on their end, despite the fact that if I switch to another provider unblock.us for example, it works instantly.

What makes you think there is an update apk? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OGRMULA/ shows October 15, 2014 and my FireTV is showing the same unupdated version loaded on it.
I assumed it was updated based on the UI Build value: release-20150810_54-sapphire (I interpreted this to mean the date it was pushed was 2015-08-10 / August 10th), see attached screenshot. Or is that value meaningless? I've no idea here, just a shot in the dark.

That might be some HTML UI coming from the server... but the apk hasn't been updated.
Hmmm. Guess I was wrong, assumed it was some kind of silent patch that updated the file. Well, something's changed, all of us that use Netflix on the AFTVs have been experiencing issues galore since around Aug 11th. Most of the time video's will load and get stuck at 25%, once in a while it'll struggle then eventually play. Strangely enough, it works fine on the Fire Stick just not the FTV. Switching dns servers fixes it instantly, so I thought somehow the unblock.us guys had figured out whatever Netflix had done and updated their servers, as I had assumed it was a patched apk. Tried it all, Clear Cache, Clear Data, Clear Cache for Amazon Instant Video, Changing timezones, De-activate Device button combination etc, nothing has worked so far.
I"m stumped, might be forced to change vpn providers, CactusVPN insist there is no issue on their end, despite the fact that 4 of us with FTVs are all having this issue, and switching dns providers fixes it instantly.
Got the "stuck at 25%" problem 2 and netflix keeps on caching all the time 2 since a couple of days.
Using which dns provider? CactusVpn?
To clear the 25 percent issue. Go to Settings, the Apps then Manage Apps, go down to Amazon Video (Might be Instant Video depending on your version) it has a green amazon icon. Well go into that and click Clear Data various times. I recommend to Clear Data then wait like a minute then again. Once the app shows 0mb for data unplug the Fire TV, don't restart it, unplug it for like 20 secs and replug, then go to Netflix and that 25 percent error will clear. It will eventually come back though every 2 months.

Forget wired network on Fire tv 2nd gen

After a recent update that almost bricked my 2nd gen box i was able to factory reset and go back to normal. Before my box had an issue i had some smart dns addresses set up on a wired connection. i am able to set these up on wireless after the factory reset but when doing on wired the changes aren't registering. Also i have noticed that there isn't the option to press the menu button to forget the wired network and start again from scratch (and presumably be able to set up the DNS addresses within the setup). My 3rd gen box gives the option of using the menu button to forget the network.
Hope someone can help me solve this annoying issue!
Just noticed your post.
I posted this today https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/help/fire-tv-gen-1-change-settings-ethernet-t3847115
So pretty much the same issue on a gen 1 unit.
So you even found after a factory reset, you couldn't make changes to the settings?
Have Amazon screwed up the software?
No idea where you could report it....
Same issue here, fire tv 2nd gen...

Did you try a factory reset?
I am reluctant to do this as it means blowing away quite a lot of setup and the earlier poster suggested that a reset did not fix the issue anyway.
Interested to know if you did a reset?
EDIT: By the way - try and put a post on this forum: https://www.amazonforum.com/forums/devices/fire-tv
I cant quite work out if it is a forum that is used for official problems - but at least its amazon. Might be good to get a few more complaints on there.

I did it twice so far, but without any result
Moreover I am in a strange situation:
I bought the AFTV when I was living in germany, at the time the service was not present i my country (Italy)
later Prime video service was started and I was able to cast videos from Fire to FTV
later AFTV stick entered my counrty, but not AFTV
So in this moment I am a Prime Video subscriber, with a AFTV device with an Italian fiormware (probably developed for the stick), but I can only see videos on my smartphone or tablet. The cast begins but immediately ends.
This situation in addition to net settings is very recent.
I don't know that they have anything specific in the software (OS) that varies depending on the country.
It might be worth having a look at your settings on the Fire TV stick and then review your amazon account settings.
You may have a mismatch somewhere.

Hi there, how did you get your box back to normal?
My box wont boot and I assume the update is to blame for this. I get stuck on a "Amazon Recovery <3e>" screen. Similar in your case?
Thank you for your reply!

the factory reset put the box back to normal. `My issue now is about putting in smart dns settings which arent being saved
I also have this problem with a Fire TV 1 and 2. I can add a wireless connection manually and for this connection I can use a static IP-address and DNS-server. But no luck with wired network on both devices. Fun Fact: My Fire TV 1 already has a static connection, but I can't update the IP-address. Both devices have software version 5.2.6.6.
I already had contact with the Amazon support repeatedly, but they basically told me to go **** myself, especially after I told them I wanted to add my own DNS-Server. They think I want to use other countries' Prime Video.

I sent Amazon Support the link to this thread. At least now they did reply to me, saying that they will look into the problem. Maybe one of the next updates will already solve this bug.
It does not really matter what the DNS settings are for - It is just a fact that sometimes they will need to be altered and now cannot be.
The wifi connections can be changed but the wired network is effectively frozen.
I am sure its just a small glitch in the code - Really hope it can be fixed.
Generally the Fire TV has been an excellent product for me.
Same problem here. Can't change or forget a wired connection. Im on Fire OS 5.2.6.7
Same for me as well on the FireTV 1, have finally updated to the latest rooted OS version and now cannot change the DNS settings on the wired connection!
Have had to revert to the WiFi connection instead for now so hopefully this gets fixed in the next release...
Just received Version 5.2.6.8 (Build 630508320) yesterday.
After installing I tried to "forget" the Ethernet connection.
It looked like it had worked - there was no connection showing - which I think is different to before - I seem to recall when you 'forgot' it would just re-appear.
I added a new ethernet connection and entered all the details I wanted - Fixed IP address and DNS servers - clicked save and it all looked ok.
Went into the About device bit which lets you check the network details etc.
IP address and DNS server details were the old details that I had 'Forgotten' - So sad to say its still knackered.
Good job Amazon!

I've just installed Version 5.2.6.8 (Build 630508620) on my Fire TV 2 and editing the network settings works now.
If you select "Update Networkconfiguration", on the right side of the screen it shows your configuration from before the update. But if you edit your network again, you will see, that the Fire TV remembered your settings.
To see your new configuration on the About-Page you have to reboot your Fire TV.
Thanks Ph4te89 - You are right!
Maybe a bit of sloppy code somewhere in there - but it does eventually decide to show the settings I saved and is presumably using them again.
Great stuff - Really like my Fire TV (especially when its working properly).

TV shows the wrong time

Hi,
I am in the UK. I have a Philips 48PFT5500 tv. For the last few years it has been displaying the correct time. But a few weeks ago started displaying the time as one hour ahead of the actual time (currently British Summer Time). Also the tv guide shows all the correct programmes but the timings are one hour ahead. I don't know what happened to cause this problem.
I checked the settings under "Settings/Region and Language/Auto Clock Mode", and it is set to "Automatic". I tried changing it to "Country Dependent" but it made no difference. Also I tried changing the tv guide data setting ("Settings/General Settings/Advanced/TV Guide") from "From the Broadcaster" to "From the Internet" but that made no difference to the displayed programme timings.
Does anybody know how I can get it to display the correct time?
a
What time shows teletext, if any in this model?
It does have teletext. I tried it but unfortunately it is not working. The teletext page just shows a black screen with the page number at the top. I can change the page number but it doesn't show any text. I haven't tried the teletext for a long time so I don't know when it stopped working.
You can manually set the time. There is a manual about it. Site 72.
Thanks. I have manually set the time. Hopefully it will remain fairly accurate.
Strangely, in the manual it mentions that under "Auto Clock Mode > Country Dependent", there is a Daylight Saving option. However my TV does not have this option. Also the manual mentions that under "Region and Language > Clock", there is a Time Zone option. Again, my TV does not have this option.
This does not surprise me at all. Manufacturers sell different versions of the same model depending on the market. The manual is standard and/or often does not keep up with firmware changes.
Strangely, even if I manually set the time, it reverts to "Auto Clock Mode > Automatic".
I manually set the time a couple of days ago, but now it has re-set itself to Automatic, and is again one hour ahead of the actual time.

Hi, my philips has been doing the same since i purchased it, i set the time and the next day its changed to 1 or 2 hours depending on the time zone, my hunch is that i have an iptv app that keeps changing the time itself, have you installed any apps since this time issue started?
I had a bit of a similar problem with my TCL smart tv before.
My auto sync date and time is always incorrect which blocks my Youtube app and if I set my date and time manually it will always reset to automatic after a power cycle.
In the end it fixed itself and my auto sync date and time became correct. I encountered the problem after I switched ISP so I think it originated and was also fixed in their system.

The only app I installed before this problem started was the Google Play Services app. (I still have the issue with the time on my TV.)

The problem may also be created by the device from which you get Internet on TV.
