Bootloaders and modem can be found HERE. Note WIFI will most likely not work if you are not updated to the latest NJ2 firmware. Please exercise caution as updating bootloaders can brick your device. If you are already on NJ1 firmware you will be safe to flash. Zip will fail with an error 7 if your firmware doesn't match an assert check to prevent bricks.

You'll have to format your internal sd when going from Lollipop to KitKat. Afraid its the only solution.

Good to hear from you enewman17. Question, if I return to stock unrooted NJ1 first, should the OTA work? It says it is "checking", but after awhile gives me an "interrupted" message and says to try again in 24 hours.
Download mode says official with warranty bit 1

Enewman17, I know that you are one of the sharpest fellows on this phone. Do i need to update to NJ2 before i flash this? Is there somewhere i can find that modem, and is it worth it as far as performance goes? Thanks for a new build. Your roms are always spot on. Thank you very much for the good job. I know i will enjoy it.

I use the stock rooted zip I had uploaded and that worked for me. Once I got the update I grabbed the OTA file, copied to my ext sd and renamed to update.zip. Then I flashed the stock recovery and selected install update from sd and installed the update zip that way.

You will need to update the firmware to NJ2 or your wifi will not work on this rom. The bootloaders and modem are linked in the OP, I don't use the phone so I can't comment on any performance really. I did notice that NJ2 definitely seems snappier and I did read in my general posts that someone had better data speeds. after updating the firmware.

OK sorry to be dense, but are you saying you returned to NJ1 unrooted stock using your earlier NJ1 rooted zip? And then you went to Update Check and downloaded the update? I am on your the same NJ1 unrooted stock, but I get the "update was interrupted" message trying to grab the update? Is this normal due to server traffic? Or do you think I need to try something else.
Just trying to see if I am able to grab OTA the usual way.
Thanks

I didn't unroot I left it rooted. I used this zip https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001613266
After a clean install I logged into gmail and all that jazz. I waited about an hour before I checked for an update... let all the apps update and everything. Maybe that's the key is to wait a little bit. I'm not sure about or what the update interrupted message is about... could be network traffic.
The only thing I did differently is I didn't let the OTA reboot and install. I renamed the file to update.zip and flashed it manually in the stock recovery.
I've attached the 2400258.cfg OTA file for anyone who wants it. Will have to unzip...

I did not use triangle away and I actually didn't flash the stock recovery until I was ready to do the update. So I actually got the update while I still had TWRP installed.

Searching around, somebody said they had luck flashing CM 11 then flashing TW. I'll try that first. Thanks.

One additional thing you might try after the full wipe is flash the bootloader/modem zip and then the ROM. I've done that a few times and it's worked

Will you update your awesome ROM with this update?

Something that worked for me. Flash Carbon rom. Then let it boot up. Just go through the info stuff. Reboot into recovery, then flash it. Make sure it is on your sd card. Internal storage wouldn't work for me. Then you should be golden. There is a new bootloader/modem that enewman put up. I flashed it. NJ2. Some people say that it works better. I am still seeing for myself, but it does seem a little stronger, signal wise. Hope it helps.

[Q] Official 4.3 Upgrade Issues

I was on stock, un-rooted firmware version MD5. Went ahead with the official 4.3 upgrade through KIES. Don't like it, want to go back to stock MD5. Trying to ODIN back with official FW file (not the first time I've used this) and when I start, it fails and what is weird is that it appears the bootloader is changed as well from the 4.3 update. It has 2 new lines in the upper left corner (Warranty Bit: 0 and BOOTLOADER RP SWREV: 1) Now, once the ODIN failed, another line, in all red letters on the download screen underneath those previous mentioned lines, states
SW REV CHECK FAIL : Fused 1 > Binary 0. Any ideas? Phone works 100% on this new 4.3 from TMO, just cant seem to ODIN back to 4.1.2. Any help would be super. Thanks!

Is not possible for right now, until devs will create a new root app or something like superSU or I don't know ! :crying: Same to me ...
Your Boot loader is probably secured.
Try Root66 image and get back to UVDMD5 Rooted. From there, use Doc Holiday's thread to get 4.3 upgrade.
As it stands, right now if you flashed the official firmware or OTA, you will not be able to Odin flash any previous firmware. Maybe if you were never rooted....
For now though, you shoukd still be able to flash cwm/twrp and flash another rom. you will be limited to the 4.3 modem, but otherwise should be ok to run a 4.1.2 rom.
We are working on it.

I was trying to few things. But essentially I was trying to get back to a custom recovery so that I can flash a compatible rom. try flashing a recovery in Odin, stay away from the CWM. Flash to TW RP or something like that. I will try to help out more as soon as I get to my laptop

Have you tried the auto root course??

Boot recovery, then reboot system. It should ssk if you want to root.
Better yet, flash one of our roms. Or, download the supersu zip file from chainfires thread. (Or in my sig, but its not up to date)
---------- Post added at 09:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:11 PM ----------
There are several ways to root. But if you don't get rid of knox iits almost pointless.
Co-author root didn't work, and nor did Root66
I'm on the same boat
Same here,
Mine was rooted, then
I Updated to Factory 4.3
Same red letters and can't get it back,
I want to 'cause it's unstable and
it has weird partition, "emulated/0"
Any Help Please !!
This is why everyone should try to search for information on anything and everything before flashing it to your device. Even if its an official update.
As stated many, many times, once you flash the 4.3 update, you cannot flash older firmware again. Roms are ok, older firmware can brick you. Your weird folder is androids implementation of user profiles if I understand it right. May as well get used to it now, I don't think its going away.
And for those interested, the root66 firmware works fine now as far as I can tell.
If you experience instability, you need to factory reset.

If I did softbrick it, is there anyway to restore it?
You can try first wiping just dalvik and cache, then try factory reset.

Thank you Doc , It has been said ..Over and over and over.. OTA 4.3 update means you cannot flash older firmware again! I was one of the lucky that waited and installed you ROM and it has been stable . I placed a few Mods like Apps For 4.3 TW
For those just refused to READ and have NOT done a OTA update to 4.3 Like DocHoliday77 and and many have said .. here goes one more time..
WARNING!!!
If you have NOT updated via the official firmware or OTA update, it is highly recommended that you do NOT do so at this time!
You can still run these roms and gain every advantage, with none of the problems!
There so many other 4.3 ROMs to play with DocHolidays, Sarahai, mrRobinson and now aamir123. . YOu just to READ before run in head first into the OTA.
I have been trying to keep up with all the 4.3 update stuff but its just so hard with 15 different threads and it being updated everyday. I stupidly updated OTA 4.3 before coming on here and reading and it blows! Samsung is stupid for releasing such a unpolished update. But besides the point, I have been having a problem with out going calls, and battery life. When I will press to call someone the call ends instantly and I have to restart phone for it to allow me to call out. Has anyone else had this problem?
Also, are we any closer to getting 4.3 rooted? I know developers are having problems with Knox etc? If not is there anything I can do to make this update better or do I just have to suck it up? Thanks for the help guys.
I alrdy talked to people at samsung and complained beyond belief, but I dont think the out sourced help desk person understood me.
I made it !!
How ?
1. Uninstall KNOX with Titanium.
2. Flash CWM twice (first one failed), Now I have CWM.
3. Download T999UVDMD5 (Deodexed)
4. Flash it via CWM.
5. Voilà !!
Now It has the partition as it comes from Factory !.
It's there a version similar to this one, running on Android 4.3 (Stock Deodexed, Without KNOX) ?

So I have a question Doc, I know I posted about this in the CM11 unofficial thread as well, but I am running your Non-Knox, CiQ free version and I have CWM installed, and I'm perfectly rooted after I updated SuperSU from the Play Store, but when I try to CWM Flash a rom it throws an error about the ro.bootloader and it lists out all the older bootloaders. So what I guess I'm getting to is what would it take to use the new bootloaders with any of the ROMs?

If you have updated to official 4.3 by any means then don't try to downgrade your boot loader and rom as it may brick device
If you have not taken official update then it depends what is your current boot loader and what rom you are trying to flash
So if you are sure that you haven't gone for official update then you flash dmd5 firmware then try to flash rom
Be sure before doing anything

[Q] T999L, trouble with installing custom roms after 4.3 update

I had my phone rooted before the update, but then I thought I'd try going without root once the update came out. But now I am rooted once again and running the "T999L 4.3 deodexed, Knox Free". But when I try to install cm (I tried 11 and 10.2), I either get the executing updater binary error, status 7 error, and when I removed the asserts, it just aborted installation. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated

I did that, tried both CWM and TWRP and it's still aborting the flash. It seems like the only rom it's letting me install is the deodexed 4.3
Actually I had a issue a few days where I accidentally wiped my internal memory and that is why I installed te deodexed 4.3, could that be a reason why nothing is working properly (I'm able to make backups but not restore them and what I mentioned before in my fist post)? Should I install the original 4.3 (with knox and everything) to get my phone on the correct thing and then use the knox remover from the forum before trying again?

Why dont you try this:
S3Rx 3.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2326763
Its basically the same thing, except its debloated with a few mods..
Just be sure you have the MK4 Modem..
if you have not updated the bootloader (DONT) It will trip your warranty counter..
Just be sure you flashed the MK4 Modem, then flash the 4.3 rom..
Also be sure to Flash the T999L Connectivity patch on top
with the Insecure Kernel.. If you dont flash the Kernel you will lose wifi connectivity..

Oops, I somehow missed realizing that that was the rom and was downloading an older version of it that was lower down on the post. I got this rom to work, but I am still unable to install other custom roms. I really liked the CM11 (4.4) rom, but after updating to 4.3 (unrooted), I am unable to install anything but 4.3 roms so it seems. I did update to the latest version of twrp and I also tried cwm, but I'm still getting failure messages, any idea on how to fix that? Thanks for your help so far

To be honest there isnt much difference between 4.4 and 4.3.. other than ART..
I much rather stay on 4.3 because it has App Ops, where 4.4 had it removed..
I much rather have an AOSP rom rather than Touchwiz, but no other ROM i have found that is non Touch Wiz
that has Wifi Calling

True, but I guess my issue is that I can't install any of the CM roms, not even 10.2 which is based on 4.3. I just like CM because of the customization and the rom you linked me to has some of them, but not all. I've already tried unrooting and re-rooting, but that still did not help. Is there a different way you're supposed to root after the 4.3 update? I've always followed the instructions on DocHoliday's T999L/T999N thread and before 4.3, I was able to use twrp to flash t999 roms without removing asserts, but now even removing the asserts, I can't install any custom roms

Im pretty new to this area myself.. I've had a few trial and error issues..
Flashing Nexus devices is far to easy compared to this.. But since they have no Micro SDcard reader..
I'll never own a Nexus phone..
This is the first phone I've rooted, I didn't have problems until after 4.3. But would you happen to know where I can find instructions on how to unroot this device? I was going to try to find an 100% 4.3 stock rom, unroot, and then try this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563955) to see if it would work and if it didn't, then I'll just leave my phone unrooted. But I can't find any instructions anywhere, the only one's I can find are DocHoliday's but that's to return to stock 4.1.2

4. *Optional* If you want a clean un-rooted phone for the update do this now! , Go into SuperSu >settings>full unroot.
5. Reboot your phone.
6. Search for the OTA in the about settings, download and let the phone update.
Or download this and place in the root of your phones internal storage. Reboot into recovery and select the update from update.zip https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001611091

The original OTA cfg file. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001611092
.cfg file goes in root/cache/fota
Rename the .cfg extension to .zip and you can rename it update.zip yourself or you can actually flash it in a custom recovery once renamed. if you choose not to use the stock recovery to update.
*You will loose root during the update* But the bootloader is not locked so you can still Odin your favorite recovery and flash SuperSU.
TWRP 2.8.1.0 Odin tar. http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2att/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-d2att.tar
SuperSU http://download.chainfire.eu/589/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.16.zip?retrieve_file=1
Once you flash your favorite recovery via Odin, you need to be ready to hold the Volume Up, Power and Home button combo when Odin reboots your phone. If you don't catch it, once the OS boots it will replace recovery with the stock version. Once SuperSU is installed your recovery will stick.

Thanks enewman for writing this up.
Doing Vice Versa Method?
Just to be clear, what if my galaxy s3 is on UCUFNJ1 and I want to go back to UCUFNE4, I can still ODIN the custom recovery and flash SuperSU?
Galaxy S3 I747
Baseband: I747UCUFNJ1
For the advanced users, should we be able to install the update without any issues? I saw in another thread that someone had installed but now their phone will not boot past the Samsung logo to anything other than a black screen.
Also, do we know what this update contains yet? Other than new bootloaders, removal of root, etc.

You know if your not wanting to return your phone to stock I really wouldn't mess with this update. Far as the user who couldn't boot... Idk I wasn't there to watch them update. This whole mess with the S3 is exhausting. We haven't got a real Odin release so I'm woking with what I can extract from my phone after updating. The system.img in ne4 zip is 100% stock except for root. So I know the update worked because I did it. Also not sure what was updated either... The kernel yes... Firmware yes, all the system apps get patched so without decompiling ne4 and nj1 apps and comparing them afraid I have no idea what the update fixes or improves.
Thanks for all you do for us S3 owners, enewman17.
If we upgrade to the new NJ1 firmware, and then flash your latest SRX Rom, I assume we cannot then use your "restore.zip" to once again go back to NE4 stock since we would be on NJ1 bootloader? If so, is there a way to go back to NJ1 stock if we later want to sell our phone?

I have the nj1 system dump, I'll get it uploaded so anyone who updates can restore back to stock.

Towelroot no longer works after the NJ1 update. Can the CF-AutoRoot still be used? The only version at http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ says it's for 4.0.4.

Yeah, I saw that, but I never had a custom recovery before, that I know of at least, and I suspect a lot of other people finding this thread in the coming days are going to be in the same boat as me. They just want SuperSU so their favorite 1 or 2 apps that require SU can continue to work.
Has anybody tried CF-AutoRoot yet on the NJ1 4.4.2?

I can confirm this as a root method for NJ1. You were exactly right regarding immediately booting into recovery after installing TWRP thru Odin. The files provided in your links (TWRP 2.8.1.0 Odin tar. http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2a....1.0-d2att.tar and
SuperSU http://download.chainfire.eu/589/Sup...etrieve_file=1)
worked exactly as stated.
A BIG thanks to you. I can't live without AdAway, TiBackup and Xposed anymore! The few days without root left me a little grumpy.
And regarding the NJ1 update as a whole...I THINK the baseband upgrade IS an actual upgrade. Since NE4, I always thought Wifi operated was somewhat choppy/throttled. THIS looks to have been improved back to ICS "standards". Re: voice, I've had a handful of dropped calls, broken up calls, and choppy data in low signal areas over the past few months on with NE4. Initial observations (albeit a tad premature) lead me to believe that this has improved as well based on a weeks worth of data use and a few calls in a "controlled" environment (the area and physical structure of my work office complex is not cellular signal friendly to begin with) I have also noticed that boot-up time has improved a bit as well. Thanks again for your efforts with the ATT GS3!
I flashed CF-Auto ROOT via Odin without success, unable to gain root access. Followed your instructions via TWRP and flashed SuperSu 2.16, my SGS3-i747 is properly rooted and functioning perfectly on UCUFNJ1. As always, thank you very kindly for all your valuable time, effort, hard work and guidance. Be well, sir!

What version of Odin do we need to flash that TWRP, or do you have a link handy?
I've seen quite a lot of different Odins out there and don't want to brick my phone by using the wrong one.
Any pitfalls to watch out for if using TWRP for the first time? I'm sure there is going to be a bunch of people having to do this now that both CF-AutoRoot and TowelRoot doesn't work anymore.
For me, personally, I just use root for AdFree and to edit the font fallback order to properly support Japanese instead of Chinese glyphs on shared Han-unified Unicode codepoints.

Use Odin 3.0.7
Not really any pitfalls to TWRP. It has an easy clean user interface and it works.
Once you have flash Super Su, in my how to ne4 update there is a flashable stock recovery. You just flash it with TWRP and once you reboot, stock recovery will be back on you phone.
Hi enewman17,
Thanks for your posts and work. I'm hoping you can help me get the new NJ1 update installed and rooted.
Here's where I'm at: AT&T SGS3 on rooted stock NE4, installed using your guides from back in June this year.
The OTA NJ1 update downloaded but failed to install (as did the NE4 OTA back then, I assume because I was rooted).
My phone still has the TWRP recovery from the previous update, so I was hoping I could install using the original OTA cfg file download from the "advanced" section in your OP so as to avoid factory reset, etc.
I downloaded the file, renamed to update.zip, and copied to my SD card. However, when I boot into TWRP and try to install it, I get an error after the system check, something like "assert failed ro.secure==1". I guess I'm doing something wrong, maybe I'm mistaken about how the original OTA is supposed to work?
Again, I'm trying to end up with a stock, but rooted, NJ1 firmware but hopefully without having to reset/lose data and settings on the phone. I don't really care right now about resale or making it look like I haven't messed with it.
Thanks for any help you can provide! Let me know if I can provide any additional details.
I am actually looking to do the exact same thing. Currently rooted, with a lot of the AT&T apps frozen via Titanium Backup.
Hope there is some way to accomplish this without returning to stock!
Thanks in advance!

Can I flash the system and boot .img's if I'm on UCUEMJB?
Its been a looooooong time since I've touched an S3, and happened across a pristine example to use for work. I'm pleasantly surprised to learn I can flash a custom recovery on this still.
This works 100% from NE4. Don't know about coming from another but from NE4 it works.

Question about the two zips
Flashable Rooted NJ1 system.img and boot.img is everything and root. S3 recovery is same thing just not rooted? Sorry if it is a stupid question, but I am making an emergency folder for my s3, and since i already upgraded to the NJ1 modem/bootloader, I have to be careful to flash an updated rom, right?

First, thanks for all your great work enewman!
Second, somewhere between Paranoid Android 4.45 and SlimKat 4.4.4 I lost my GPS signal too. I was on some pretty old firware, so I followed enewman's instructions in this and another thread and got my bootloader and modem all the way up to NJ1. I checked my GPS function every step of the way, but it never came back.
Then i found this thread about GPS problems over in the CM forums:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/99965-gps-issues-with-latest-nightlies/
Post #8 in the CM forum thread describes how to rebuild your NVRAM once you're in a stock AT&T ROM; appropriately enough, part of their solution links back to an older enewman post for an NE4 stock update. I followed their procedure exactly except I flashed the rooted UCUFNJ1 ROM from this thread. Once I rebuilt the NVRAM, voila GPS came back! I use an app called GPS Test that sometimes seems like it has an easier time getting a fix than others. Throughout the whole problem, it reported no satellites visible. Once NVRAM was rebuilt GPS Test sees 23 satellites and fixes in a few seconds.
Next, I restored SlimKat from a TWRP backup, and sure enough the GPS fix stuck. Now everything is working again . I did have to have GPS Test clear AGPS data to get more than 4 satellites visible at first in SlimKat.
Hope this helps you! As always read carefully, do your research, and follow all the steps carefully. Good luck!
ODIN?
Is there an ODIN file for this? I want to update my bootloader and modem to NJ1, but I don't have a custom recovery installed due to wanting to leave my warranty bit at 0 until the warranty is up.
Anything new worth noting in this vs. earlier KitKat builds (NE4, NE6, etc)?
Stuck @ ATT Logo
Flashed the NJ1 rooted zip coming from Cyanide v4, and it has been sitting at the logo for 10 minutes. Any ideas?

Did you flash the NJ1 bootloader & modem? If so then you need to backup your internal SD to a PC or ext sdcard, & (manually) wipe system, data, cache, dalvik, & internal SD in recovery (manually wipe everything but extSdcard) & then flash again. When coming from AOSP back to TW or TW to AOSP you should always do this. The data on internal SD is causing the issue! Make sure you back it up & do a 100% clean flash, you'll be surprised how fast it'll boot afterwords!! Need to be on NJ1 bootloader & modem, & never skip any when upgrading for example- MJB to NE4 to NJ1, If you skip you'll have trouble, & not the kind easy to fix!

I am also in desperate need of an ODIN version of this. I can't get into my bootloader or recovery right now =(

Stuck in boot loop & No OS installed. NEED HELP!

I tried to root and flash a room onto my Sprint Note 4 (N910P) and ended up in a weird bootloop. No biggie I've done this before with my S3 and S4 and a few S6 Phones.
NOPE!! I have NO OS installed.
I would post photos but since I am new here I cant. I have TWRP intalled (v.2.8.7.0) and it says "No OS installed! Are you sure you wish to reboot?" I only wiped dalvik cache and regular cache. and factory reset per instructions for rom. (Rom that was being installed was AllianceROM©N910P
I was running on Android version 5.0.1 not the latest OTA 5.1.1 I didnt update it to that since I never had a good time with OTA's and rooting.
Any assistance would be helpful as i just got the phone and now I dont have a working one at all
Thanks!
Do you know what release of Android 5.0.1 you had? Alliance is only compatible with the OB7 release.
Without much detail of what actually happened, I'd suggest rebooting the recovery and trying that flash again or another ROM like Noterized that should flash over the other builds.
Did you uber wipe or wipe everything but ExtSdCard maybe? If you used Odin, what did you flash and did you get any error messages?

Good. FYI, OF5 came after OB7. It's important to know for a few reasons. Custom ROMs are limited for OF5 (Noterized and CM12 mostly; maybe some stock ones available also).
That OF5 (including OE1 and OG5) bootloader is reactivation locked to the point that Odin of a previous tar like OB7 or KitKat is going to cause a lot problems trying to flash something that actually boots again.
For some reason, a few have complained of inability to Odin latest OG5 from OF5 but had to first Odin OF5 and OTA update to OG5.
But if you want a custom ROM there's newer development going on in OG5. I'd try KIES or Odin OG5 stock tar if wanting to go that way. I think most on OF5 were able to Odin OG5 but not positive on that. Sorry to say that Alliance is not for you with that bootloader.

I would like to root and get a rom on my note soon but I haven't run a big problem like this in my years of modding (mind you its here and there modding and nothing fancy) for now im gonna stick with bloated stock until a decent non-buggy rom is released for the OF5 bootloader. I didnt know which was which since im new to the Note Family. Been in the S2-4 series most of my time.
Looking for a good stable rom with no bloat and adblocking, nothing fancy
Thanks again.

It worked fine, phone runs like a dream. Only issue is the stock camera is very poor quality so I might mod that next.
