Annoying hard or not responsive knock issue after taking out of the pocket. I'm not experiencing this in G3.
Taking out of pocket means right after the proximity sensor is open and is not blocked inside your pocket. Video below shows simulation of wha might happen whe. The phone is inside your pocket, it might read touches but will be blocked since the proximity is closed, but after it was open, the phone is having hard time capturing touches to turn on the display which is not happening in my G3.

Yes. I've had this on all 3 of my Verizon G4s. I'd say it falls under the heading of the common missed-touch issues.
Could be a missed touched issue but i'm leaning more towards to proximity delay action.. It seems that user needs to wait few seconds before knock will be registered
I have the same problem. When the hand is close to the sensor, the knock on does not work. Also if the sensor is covered by some object or if the phone is in your pocket, it need some seconds to enable the knock on touches.
I think there is a anti battery drain adjustment to avoid that the touch panel be always on.... But definitely is very slow...

Yes, it's too slow. Another function that might degrade the quality of knock on is the swipe down feature that previews time and notification icon.

So this is my second S3 with an identical proximity sensor problem (phones are/were both completely stock) - hold it to your ear and the screen blanks like it should but lower it so you can enter a keypad number (like for voicemail) and the damn screen shuts off as soon as your finger comes near it! WTH? This is insanely frustrating but I haven't read of it happening to others nor did Telus tech support. Am I the only one to have this happen to (twice)?

When you hold the phone down from your ear, putting your hand/fingers anywhere near the top part of the phone will cause the screen to turn off. The sensor is just to the right of the speaker, to the left of the front facing camera. It can be a bit frustrating at times, but just taking your time and making sure not to go too close to it is pretty much all you can do.

This just seems a bit crazy to me. Some of the numbers I need to enter for my voicemail password include those that are on the top row of the keypad which is apparently close enough to the sensor to trigger it and blank the screen. I guess that explains why I have better luck with the numbers on the bottom keypad row. So the only thing I can do is hold the phone on the very bottom and very carefully slowly reach up with a finger and very gently tap one of those top-row numbers? That just seems too bizarre to be true - but I'll try it.
Hm, ive never had mine do this while typing. It does turn off if I put my finger up there but I've only done that on purpose, to test it. Never blacked out the screen on accident. Makes me wonder how differently you hold your phone than I, or maybe your proximity sensor is much more sensitive.

I don't think I hold the phone in any unusual way, I just hold it around the middle with my left hand and use the index finger of right hand to (try) and enter a keypad number. Sometimes (maybe about 1/2 the time) it works without an issue but when it decides to turn off the screen it can take me many tries before I am finally able to enter the complete 4 digit code. Just can't understand why any phone would be designed this way. If it's an overly sensitive proximity sensor I could understand that - but this is the second phone I've had with the exact same issue. I now try to not hold the phone to my ear at all but use the speaker function instead.
Hey guys. My brother just got this phone and is having some issues. .. He's coming from Lumia 922.. So it shouldn't be too hard to impress him .. right? Well so far he has gone into airplane mode every call he's taken because the screen won't sleep and his cheek toggles to airplane mode. Is there any setting to help this? I want to give him a chance to like this phone, but if you can't even comfortably make a call without worrying about accidentally bumping the button maybe he needs to trade it ...
Any advice would be appreciated.
Does he have a screen protector on it? Sometimes those mess with the proximity sensor and makes the screen stay on.

I have a somewhat similar issue. I returned my first phone because I thought the proximity sensor wasn't working. I would be speaking on the phone, press my face to the screen and then would hear an ear shattering beep and then then phone would switch to speaker phone. This happened several times. I did have a screen protector on the phone but removed it. It continued even after I removed the protector.
I swapped the phone for a new one and all was fine for the first several days. Yesterday the problem started again. And, no, no screen protector this time.
I've noticed this with this phone, as well. I have a screen protector, but it doesn't cover the proximity sensor. That's in the metal above the screen, I doubt anyone's screen protector would affect it.
Sometimes when my face is literally pressed against the phone, and by proxy the proximity sensor, the screen still comes on and I can see it out of the corner of my eye. While it happened occasionally with my other phones, this has happened more in the week and a half I've had this phone than a couple months with the others. I think it might be a defect in the model if others are having this issue.
I've also had it turn on the speakerphone for no reason even when it's pressed against my face. Don't know if that's part of the issue or not.

Well it's nice to hear that I am not the only one having this issue, but frustrating that I am too. . If anyone finds settings or a solution let me know. . It's definitely annoying.
Must be a limited issue. Haven't heard of this from anyone I know and I have yet to have the issue.
I think I may have figured out my problem. I had an "el cheapo" TPU case (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Transparent...r-for-HTC-One-2013-M7-Accessory-/330949139388) on the phone. Today I put 3 different callers on speakerphone & mute simultaneously. Took the case off and haven't had a problem since.
Hi, I've searched this forum and the Internet in general about proximity sensor problems but it seems like basically every problem that someone else had was fixed by removing tempered glass/screen protectors/cases/covers. I'm having a proximity sensor issue and I'm not using any screen protector or case.
This has happened twice now. Once when I was listening to visual voicemail, once when I was making a call. The screen goes dark and will not respond to any wake commands. Every now and then it will turn on for half a second when I hit the power button but then turns back off again. The first time when I was listening to visual voicemail, I had to hard restart the phone by holding volume up and power. The second time during the call, I managed to hang up the call in the half second the screen came back on, which ended the problem.
Right after that, I tested the proximity sensor using the SMMI test (calculator .12345+=). The test makes you put your hand near the sensor, then away, then near again. During the test, the phone immediately sensed my hand near the sensor except that my hand was nowhere near the sensor and there was nothing else near the sensor either.
I did a reboot and ran the test again. This time, the test finished correctly. The phone did not detect my hand until I actually put it near the sensor.
I'm running stock everything except I do have root(ZE551ML). I'm leaning towards this being a hardware problem and I've only had the phone for a week so I'm well within my replace period with Amazon. Is there a solution to this I'm missing or should I just replace? I'm a firm believer in troubleshooting first. Plus, setting up the phone the way I like again will be a huge PITA.

I would replace. It does sound like a hardware issue, and your better off getting a replacement instead of a possible pain for the life of your phone.
I get the same, and the flickering screen happened once to me after I I have just put a tempered glas protector on it ... removed it and so far no problems, but who knows.
I think the SMMI test works correctly the first time you start it, and incorrectly the 2nd, 3rd etc ... dont think it is a hardware error ...

I just fixed mine, cause I was having that issue for a LONG time now.
I actually just stuck a piece of paper in front of the light sensor part of the sensor window on the screen. It's the right side of the sensor window.
To be more clear, a while back my screen broke, so I ordered a screen online and changed it. Ever since then my prox. sensor didn't work, so I couldn't use the keypad during calls (the screen would go black).
My screen still isn't attached properly, so it's just being held in by the floppy protective case I have on it right now. This allowed me to pull the screen away from the phone a bit and slide a piece of paper behind it right in front of the light sensor. As soon as I blocked the light sensor then the proximity sensor started reading properly.
I got the idea because I was trying to clean the screen, thinking that it might just be dust blocking it or something. That didn't help, so I tried cleaning the sensor, but had the calibration test running at the time, and it instantly worked!
So I kept playing around with it and noticed that every time I blocked the right side of the sensor, it worked, but as soon as I removed the brush I was using to clean, it stopped working.
I stuck a piece of paper in, and BOOM, worked just fine.
People might want to build on this and maybe try sticking a piece of tape over the right part of the sensor. I haven't tried it, and since I finally have it working now, I really don't want to play with it too much and mess it up.
Hope this helps anyone else having this issue.

I am using zenfone 2 laser z550kl. Screen blackout during call and did not come up till the call is cut. I changed only the cover of proximity sensor and phone is working fine. Change the small rubber covering of sensor and it will work.

My 5x is 2 1/2 years old no BLOD. I'm now having Proximity Sensor issues. When I'm on a call and need to key in numbers the screen flashes off and on. This means I can't use the key pad very odd. Any ideas or help. Hate to need a new phone over this issue but maybe. thanks
If you've had the phone apart recently, you may want to check to see that the little rubber piece (see pic below) didn't fall off.
Forget all the "you need to not press hard" bull****, it's way simpler than that.
Register your finger while holding the phone in one hand, position your fingerprint on the sensor exactly as you would casually, keep registering it that way, from a limited position on a one handed held.
If you do a "proper" registering process of your fingers from artificial positions just because you think it helps the sensor, it won't work, even minimal changes in your finger shape will make it generate different keys that will not match a real life press.
I registered my fingers from positions I would practically use to unlock later on, the success rate is now 100% as long as I don't miss the sensor on dark screen, no matter the pressure or the time you hold your finger on the sensor, it will now work every single time

I tend to agree with you. I registered both right and left thumbs and they both work on command. No 2nd or 3rd attempts yet. Just register the thumbs like you would naturally hold them on the screen(flat).
I also feel like the fingerprint scanner icon is a bit misleading, given the fact that the sensorbis actually above the actual icon

But when I try to casually tap the screen to register fingerprint naturally, it won't register, keeps saying press harder or hold longer
Or register the same finger twice.. That's the better solution

The tap needs a certain amount of pressure, not too light either

Same, and i registered the finger I'm going to be using most twice. Registered casually and from a natural position. I think mine has failed to unlock maybe 3 times in a week. In this case...keep it simple don't over think it.

I noticed when the screen is off in dark mode and u take a flashlight on a angle of the screen i noticed the sensor is like a U shape just slighty to the left of the finger print icon, now that i kinda setup my finger print just a tat left og the finger print icon its been 100 procent i also noticed moist fingers work better . i could be wrong about it being a sensor but the U shape i think would be the sensor

You don't need to move your finger away, the sensing part of the sensor is perfectly aligned in the middle
New update on firmware.Science for snapdragon. SBA TO SD3. Made a world of difference for me. Can't wait for my replacement Whitestone to get here to see if sensor works any better with tempered glass. This update absolutely made a huge difference. Not slightly, very significant change for me. I register both thumbs twice and I couldn't get it to not unlock every time. 50+ unlocks and maybe 2 failures. I stopped counting at 50.
Will it work on verizon or only unlocked?

I'm waiting on my Whitestone replacement as well. Can you keep us informed on how the sensor works with your new install? I had to pull the last one. It was horrible. I miss my glass...
The problem for me and many people is that when the finger being scanned is dry, scanning won't work (and will be asked to "press harder"). Some people then try to press really hard and it will, forever, say "not match".
People with moisted fingers will not have this problem and will not understand the kind of people I mentioned above. Since I have S10+ for a month, I, kind of, know when the scanning will not work. I will use face scanning instead or if I really want to scan my finger with whatever reason, I just rub my nose with my thumb then it will 100% work (greasy nose does the trick).
I don't know if Samsung can ever fix this since it is not how accurate the reader is.
Dry fingers don't work with the fps even when removing the pre-installed screen protector?
I am debating to remove the screen protector and my main points are:
1. The protection offered by the pre installed screen protector is minimal either way.
2. That the screen colors and usage will become much better.
3. That the fps will work much better even with dry fingers due to the oleophovic coat of the screen.
Has anyone who removed the screen protector tested this?

I removed mine yesterday and it does help a little with the fps. I still don't like the fps though, I would much rather have a Face ID equivalent. Or have the fps on the back.

I had reached out to Whitestone because my first install failed. I had the WSD on my s9+ and went through 5 or 6 in the year (I dropped my phone a lot). So I knew what I was doing, but the first try had a huge bubble. Tried doing the cleaning and reinstall with the backup glue and had a bunch of microscopic bubbles in the top and bottom (guessing I didn't clean it well enough before reinstall). I wasn't sure how to register warrenty wise because technically it worked fine, just was having FPS issues. They ended up replacing without me paying for the shipping which was awesome of them.
Recieved my replacement today, and the install is flawless. One thing to note is on the 10+ the absorb pads hook into the top tray not the bottom (that was a hell of a mess the first time). The original kit didn't come with the pads pre-installed like the replacement kit.
I haven't even gotten the latest OTA yet, and with the WSD glass, it's just as quick and success rate is the same as when I had the pre-installed protector. Might even be faster than my s9+ was...
