I've been having off and on issues with my E4GT screen and would like a replacement. Ive been living with it since february, but it's getting very annoying for such a beast of a phone. Is there any way I can switch it out and get a white one? I do have the tep insurance if it matters. I'm in the Dallas area. Please PM me if you think you can help

Since they are two foretaste model numbers, they will send whatever is attached to your account. Your best bet would be going to a local store and trying to persuade a rep to help you out... But chances are you'll be leaving with the same model that is on your account.

I'm doing this same thing. My wife wants a white one now so I'm trying to figure something out.
I figure if I throw enough of a fit about how Sprint owes my a** something in order to make up for their lack of any mentionable data speeds while I still pay every month for 'premium data' - a white E4GT swap for my wife is the least they can do.
Otherwise I'll just cancel my contract with no ETF due to them failing to hold up their end of the contract. Or they can upgrade us both to a SGSIII when it comes out so I can have the speeds I was promised with LTE and 1x Advanced.
All I need is a tech!! I spoke to a 3rd party sprint rep and they said it can be switched with either, its basically up to the tech. Is there any one at all in the Dallas area that would like to help a fellow XDAer out? (i would be more than happy to bring a donation to a cause of their choosing )
btw I do have the ted insurance, so would that provide any help in getting a white replacement more easily? I dont want to pay the $100, but im almost willing to at this point. hence the "donation" not being an issue

You also have to remember that being a technician is our job, not strictly our hobby. We have to adhere to policies. I personally wouldn't swap you just because you asked, my SRSS frowns upon that.
The best thing to do is bite the bullet, drive to the store, and take whatever is given to you.
I understand what youve told me, however it is difficult for me to leave the office again and go through the hours of bs just to end up with someone looking at the thing for 20 min and saying nothing is wrong or I need to get a battery (yes, someone told me my screen and buttons malfunctioned due to my battery). This is not the first time I have done this and I am fed up to say the least. I know more about these devices and this network than 80% of the people working at the stores I've gone to.
Replacing the device is the hard part and the color change is a bird id like to kill with the same stone. All I was looking for was assistance from a fellow member to stream line things and get me the customer service that Sprint should be striving for. God knows their data speeds and innovation aren't going to save them.
I'm sorry for the rant, it was not directed at you. Ive been calling Sprint for weeks about separate issues and I was trying to take this issue on by myself. If it comes down to it I will bite the bullet and deal with them the old fashion way, but that is my last resort
Depending in what custom ROM you're running (sorry just assuming since you're on xda, if not it doesn't matter) if you type *#0*#0 on the dialer it brings up a diagnostic menu. One of the tests in this menu is a line drawing test for the touchscreen. If you can see it consistently messing up in a certain part of the screen that's one of the easiest tests we have to verify touchscreen issues and a good way to make sure the tech you talk to isn't just going to say sorry we can't verify the issue. And as much as it can suck if we can't reliably duplicate the issue our options are pretty limited as far as repair/replacement goes.
As for the color issue, I may be in the minority but if I have the parts in and someone comes in and asks nicely, I don't mind swapping what color someones screen/housing is of there's actually a problem

tried to do the dialer and it wont let me input the last 0. i think the hashes are the start and end of a code, so nothing can go after them
Yea when they sent us the code that's how out was written but now that I think about out out does just jump into the menu as soon a you hit the second #. I think it only works on completely stock roms though, I just tried it on calks el29 and no joy

tried on calk2 1.6 and no go. idk why it would only be on completely stock. calk practically is
An easy way to tell, for me, is dragging down notification bar, if it gets really choppy in a certain area, then you definitely have a spot that's out. Doesn't always work, but easy to tell. The dio menu, I am pretty sure it only works on completely stock roms with EL29, I have not tried on any ICS leaks though. I am currently running CM, so obviously, doesn't work lol.

I have had a Sprint rep tell me that a charging issue that my old Hero had was due to a bad cable. So I bought a new cable(not from sprint) and had the same problem. Took it back and they said it was the battery. So I bought a new battery(not from sprint), and had the same issue(returned the battery after. The last issue they said was that the charging port was loose, but they didn't want to fix it because they didn't want to ruin the internals of the phone.
I have hardly ever gotten good service by a rep in a Sprint store. I have gotten good service over the phone though.

It's a cell phone, there is no reason to have a sense of entitlement. If you don't like your data speeds or whatever, cut ship and go elsewhere. But don't even try that bull****.
If you really want a white one shove a flat head in your charging port and break the pins ( made me cringe when I seen my buddy do it) automatically a replacement cause we can't fix them. Then go to a 3rd party preferred retailer and when they go to order it just ask nicely for a white one. As long as you have TEP is all free

My HTC One X JUST came into the mail today and I want to get started and get my favorite custom software already. However, the fact that my phone could possibly have a problem out of the box, if I start doing dev stuff, I lose my warranty. Should I wait a bit? I feel like I would notice if anything was wrong already.

Personally I would hold off at least a week just to make sure. Cause you would be kicking yourself if you do have a problem and HTC decide to try and charge you for it cause your unlocked.

That's a very good point.
Some common problems with the device sometimes only show up after a few days use and sometimes HTC wont repair your device if it's rooted, even if it's a hardware problem.
After a week any problems that it might have should have showed up
Thanks guys! Yeah I was kind of thinking the same thing. I suppose I can live with Stock for a week while I test everything out. I would definitely be pissed at myself if they wouldn't service it simply because I wanted Adblock over the next week. haha.
I usually give it a month or so before I do anything to void my warranty. I've had phones before that had something wrong with them that I didn't notice until they were no longer under warranty, so I give it a while before I bother. Plus, this phone is undoubtedly much faster than your previous, so even stock it should be a sizable boost. Enjoy it as it is for a little while, then when you put custom software, you'll get that boost again!

DONT DO IT YET. i had mine for 2 days, after 2 days yellow tinting appeared on it, i am definitely going to wait a few weeks when HTC send it back, hopefully we will have S off then

Thanks guys! You rock. I'm definitely gonna wait. I'm thinking a week or two so I can test every feature which I haven't been able to test (blue tooth, tethering, and more) or even discover for that matter.
And yes, I came from the Moto Milestone 2 to the Moto Backflip... To the One X. The experience isn't even comparable. I am so happy with the improvement I am just giddy over the fact that I have this super phone. No rush to throw custom on it when it's already this good. Only SERIOUS reason I would unlock for at the moment would be battery and AdFree purposes but for real, the battery isn't that bad.. Idk why people keep hating on it. I am a pretty heavy user too. I mean, it's got some serious hardware to run!

Have been around for a while now, and my best advice is leave your phone as it is out of the box. If you are not a developer or you know what you are doing. Rooting your phone can get expensive since you give up all warranty on software you also hand htc a reason to not help you if they have a hardware issue. Every little thing can be blamed on software even dead pixels. I just bought a one x it is now back at the shop as DOA, and I will receive a new phone. If I had rooted that device be damb sure they would have pinned me with a bill for the work. So I will not root my one x before I know that there is no bugs screen errors speakers or any other hardware faults in it. Rooting just ain't worth it if want too use the phone on a daily basis

I have rooted some phones over the years and I personally prefer to leave stock as well. I am not worried about warrantee since software can be reflashed and never had a tech sweat that so much as to hold bad software against me. It's an easy fix and anything easy to fix is easy points on their repair exchange ratio. Any tech blaming bad pixels on software makes me wonder.

I know it is idiotic too blame dead pixels on software. But I have two htc phones that has dead pixels and I don't get a new screen cause they are rooted this is one of them. Further this phone reboots randomly and I can't seem get rid of it with different roms. And a tech told me that there is a hardware bug in the motherboard of the phone, but I can not get it fixed cause the phone is unlocked... No regret tho cause I love this phone and playing around with it are fun :-D But it will not ever be my day to day phone, and that is why I wrote this. Unlocking and rooting it might render the phone into a toy and not a reliable phone

Technically you can, you can relock the bootloader, this will unroot the phone, however it will leave you with a phone that has a "relocked bootloader" which means what is says, not that it's still rooted.

After locking boot-loader it will show "RE-LOCK" not lock, so you can't get warranty by simply re-locking your phone again... And you're right, you shouldn't unlock-root your phone unless you are completely satisfied with the device itself, and even after that rooting is a dangerous procedure (although it is easy to do)
Hence why it is better to wait for S-OFF.
However it's a risk and individuals have to decide whether the risk is worth taking or not to unlock via HTC Dev.
I took the risk and all is fine, no HW issues to speak off if anything happens in the future I full well know that I took the risk and will have to take the gamble on whether warranty gets honored or not. Touch wood I have no problems but with technology anything can go wrong anytime.
I think its down to the individual. If the extra cost of repairs is not thing you can afford then maybe stay away. Most of of us are on here because we like to play around with our tech and rooting is one way to customise it so its worth the risk. Even with unrooting technically being easy to spot.
I see too many in here, that actually breaks the phone. I can afford breaking my phone, but when it comes down to my day to day phone. I really need it too be just that a phone, and flashing it always brings me more hassle.
And one x is still fresh of the block, and those I know have had to return the phone at least one time. So unlocking this phone is more of a gamble than a older brand that has been around for a while.

There are several people here who have gotten their phone fixed under warranty even though their phones have been re locked. As long as you return it to stock I don't see why HTC shouldn't fix your phone, given that you haven't caused the problem.

Heh there is more on this site than just rooting your phone. ;-) it is actually a very good site too find out what is coming look at beats among other. Why do you think beats are added to the one x? I have been on Unix systems since I was twelve, and done kernel work. So being able to see android form is fascinating. And maybe your friends just don't want to know how it works, just as long as it works.

All the OP did was warn us. He said if you ain't a developer don't . His subjective opinion. I ain't a developer but I still root every phone I own and that is a lot. I am comfortable with ADB and fast boot. Someone else like me will disregard this post.
The most the OP will do is scare off a new comer from rooting. Whether this is good or bad is unknown. He may have well just prevent two "help I've bricked my phone" posts or on the flip side prevented the next Chainfire from being realized.
I can't say I disapprove with the entire post but a few elements shouldn't be added. Remember this is a tech site. Saying not to for anything unless its proven to be harmful goes against what XDA stands for.
Just try and be more responsible when you post. Not everyone is savvy. People do come here to learn.

Its always good to test out the phone thoroughly before you root the phone. Rooting is not difficult..if done right it can really help you get the most out of your device.
I think that Android phone with out ROOT is very stupid.
1) The simplest proof of this - the inability to remove unneeded applications.
2) Your GPS is bad because of an incorrect region. And you can solve it in two ways. ROOT or RST Phone(+about 8 thousands of rubles)
3) Android without ROOT is the same as Windows without the system administrator)

lol, just so u know though, ios doesnt let u install all of the stuff as well, say for on android, at least AFTER.i root, i can unstall htc locations and stocks..but even after you jailbreak, uninstalling system apps is a lain in the ass.
for ios users, jailbreaking doesnt make as much difference as it does when rooting on android

I really want to put Jelly Bean on my phone, long story short. I got my new nexus from Verizon totally unaware about the radio problems.
My phone constantly drops service then picks it up. No matter how much I tweak my phone

Its probably best that you got it from best buy they have great exchange policies. So this happens in stock correct? I would say that's pretty hardware related. I don't think an unofficial software upgrade would fix that. Unless there are better radios. I'm not too sure as I have the sprint nexus. Hopefully somebody with a big red version will chime in.

Flashing will not fix this hardware issue. Please return it and request a new one. My brother got one yesterday, and best buy was trying to give him **** about how its Verizon's ****ty service. Got a new one and works great now. I got lucky and mine worked out of the box.
Edit: I suggest playing with before you leave the store too, so many defective devices I'm honestly baffled no one has sued. Its ridiculous.

Thanks! I was highly considering this, I got the phone as a gift and I thought it was weird that I got the phone with the battery dead. It turns out that its been the radio making my phone hot and killing my battery. My phone gets 4 hrs battery life and holds a signal for like 2 mins at a time, I can't believe best buy employees don't catch it

Yup, I guarantee if you look at the battery stats and in it, you'll see cell standby. I bet its used up 30%+ when normally its suppose to use 2%.
It is odd that they don't catch this.. hell even Samsung. Why are there so many defective devices?

I just bought an S3 off a friend, thinking nothing was wrong with it, the kid just doesn't know how to use a phone, but I've come to the conclusion that he may have been right. I don't want it to be a hardware issue, but it very well may be.
The phone has never been rooted, always stock 4.1.2, but one day the screen quit working while he was asleep. The phone works, makes noise, I can unlock it and all, but no matter what I do, I get nothing on the screen, just black.
Like I said, I don't want to shell out $200 for a dang screen replacement when it isn't cracked or anything.
If anybody could help me fond a way to get this thing to work as a gift for my better half, I would be forever grateful!
It sounds like you already know what needs to be fixed, you just don't want to spend the money to do it and I don't blame you. Spending over $150 fix this device really isn't worth it, to me at least.

After a quick Google it seems Samsung made a couple bad batches and a few people got replacements for free. I can wait if they would, so I'm gonna call them and have my fingers crossed.

You can try, but unless its under warranty, they'll probably charge you an "arm and a leg" to fix the device.

I just got really freaking lucky. Days are left on the warranty. Looks like I'm sending it in for a replacement! End of story! :laugh:
