I finally figured out how to selectively enable/disable LTE bands on the Verizon LG G4. Seeing as I couldn't find this information anywhere else, I figured I'd write up a quick post so others could do the same.
My reason for wanting to do this was to disable Band 13 occasionally in areas where I had a weaker (but still usable) Band 4 signal to take advantage of the faster speeds.
Usual disclaimers apply, I take no responsibility for you screwing up your phone. That being said, I have had no issues enabling/disabling bands using this method and would consider this to be pretty safe (as long as you don't go off into the weeds and start changing other settings on the hidden menu). You MUST be rooted in order for this to work.
1. From a terminal emulator app that has been granted root permissions, type the following (pay attention to capitalization):
Code:
su -c "am start -a com.android.intent.MAIN -n com.lge.VerizonHiddenMenu/.VzwLTETest.LTETestMain"
2. A page should open that says "Verizon Hidden Menu" at the top. There are four options: CDMA Preference, GCF Test Mode, LTE Connect w/o IMS PDN, and finally, the one we're concerned about, LTE Band Selection.
3. Once you tap LTE Band Selection, it should take you to the screen shown below. By default, Band2, Band4, and Band13 were checked for me, with Band5 being unchecked.
4. Change whichever band selections you want and tap "Save and Reboot" (yeah, I know, it sucks you have to reboot and can't just change them on the fly).

Changing which bands are enabled/disabled does not seem to affect voice calling or the ability to send/receive SMS/MMS (on my Galaxy S4, the method of forcing a certain band DID affect these things if I remember correctly). If there isn't 4G operating in your area on the bands you have selected, it seems the phone just falls back to using 3G.
Hopefully this helps someone out there. Post your successes or failures. Thanks!
Thanks for this! I haven't tested it yet as I'm at work, but I've been trying for hours to get this to come up. None of the shortcut apps that worked on the G3 worked, so I'm glad this seems to work.
What bands were checked by default? I'm curious about band 2 as I can't pickup T-Mobile LTE on band 2 with my VS986, yet it worked on my Moto X.

The screenshot I posted shows the bands that were on by default (2, 4, and 13 ... but not 5). I'm just speculating, but it's possible that your phone will never connect to band 2 as long as the other ones are enabled, either because the other bands are always a stronger signal in your area, or maybe Verizon is prioritizing their LTE bands 13 and 4 over T-Mobile LTE on band 2. I'd try disabling everything but band 2 and see what happens after you save and reboot.
thanks for this, i get battery drain only at my house because of 1x,4g, 3g signals...this should help!!!
How do you tell the band strength?

I have yet to find any app that will show you the strength of multiple LTE bands SIMULTANEOUSLY. Without being an expert on mobile communications, I'd venture a guess that anything running in the application layer can probably only read the signal strength of the band you are currently connected to. To see the signal strength of multiple bands, you would probably need to be down in the lower levels closer to the actual chip where the decisions are being made about which tower/band to connect to based on analyzing all the signals detected by the phone. That's all just speculation, and maybe someone else can correct me and provide additional technical details.
The way I've checked each band's signal strength in a given location is to one-by-one disable the bands and see if your phone connects to another band after reboot and look at the signal strength using one of the many signal strength apps out there.

AFAIK you can only read the signal strength of the band you are connected to. On older phones you could see the 1x and LTE strength side by side.

Thanks, tested in lower Manhattan (close to freedom tower),
Band, 3g/4g, dBM signal strength, speedtest ping, speedtest downstream, speedtest upstream:
Band 2 = 4g-108dBm , 43ms ping, 5.62 Mbps, 1.28 Mbps
Band 4 = 4g -79dBm , 30ms ping, 8.00 Mbps, 9.69 Mbps
Band 5 = 3g -72dBm , 47ms ping, 1.04 Mbps, .47 Mbps
Band 13 = 4g -69dBm , 39ms ping, 12.39 Mbps, 3.96 Mbps
Would it be best to select only 13, or 4 & 13, or all of the above and does the phone automatically switch based on notices from VZW on which band has greatest signal/capacity or do they adjust based on limited/unlimited users?
You could access LTE bands selection menu simply using shortcut master lite app from play store. Use search function and type LTE. You'd find what you're looking for.

Wait, how do you know band 5 is 3G? I believe Verizon is refarming EVDO for Band 5 LTE. I think they are 2.5MHz spectrum slices, so that would explain the lower speeds.

So here is my question. If you go to Settings > About Phone > Status > and then look under Mobile Network Type, it tells you which type of Network you are currently connected to.
I live in NYC and also in Washington, DC, both arees that should have patches of HSPA+, and I've never once seen my phone connect to anything higher than HSPDA.
My Question is, should it state HSPA+ in my Phone Status screen? And if so, I want proof by way of a screen shot that somebody has actually connected to HSPA+. I've had my G2 since a few days before it was released, and I check this almost everyday to see if my phone will ever display HSPA+ in the Mobile Network Type page in the settings.
Can anybody show me proof that they are on HSPA+? And I don't want to see speedtest results. Everyone claims they are on HSPA+ based on speedtest results. I want a screen shot showing this, IF it in fact does display HSPA+ under these settings when connected.
Sorry if I sound rude, I don't intend this at all, I have been wondering this for months, and have scoured the internet trying to get definitive information on this particular thing, yet to no avail.
I'm very satisfied with my phone, and in fact would recommend it to anyone in the market, I just want to see a screen shot that says HSPA+ in the settings, IF IT EVEN DOES SHOW THIS, that's all!! My phone's network connection is still pretty fast.
Because we all know the "H" could mean a number of things, it doesn't necesarily mean HSPA+ which is why T-Mobile can get away with displaying an "H" for a number of networks (not knocking T-Mobile at all, I'm a loyal subscriber).
If you consider HSPA+ to differ and to be a level above HSDPA or HSUPA, the G2 won't be able to reach it. That's because HSPA+ network can be considered multiple cell HSPA (HSPA = HSDPA & HSUPA) and HSDPA maximum throughput is 14Mb/s. That was the advertised maximum capability of the phone. Most HSPA towers (non-plus) have throughput of 2, 3, 5, 7Mbps anyway, and it's unlikely that the network differentiates between HSPA+ and HSPA. If you find yourself in an HSPA+ cell, your speeds should go as high as 14Mbps, but you may not know if it's HSDPA at it's max or HSPA+ running at a higher speed.
High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) [1] is a amalgamation of two mobile telephony protocols, High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA), that extends and improves the performance of existing WCDMA protocols. A further standard, Evolved HSPA (also known as HSPA+), was released late in 2008 with subsequent adoption worldwide beginning in 2010... so another words hspa and hspa+ is the same thing.. but when your closer to a "4g " tower of course your internet speeds will respond faster.. to know what kind of internet your on.. go to menu, settings, about phone, than network

It does, but it doesn't take full advantage of it, you'll defenetly get faster download and upload speeds than other phones, if u root and flash a rom with the latest radio you'll be able to see the little H instead of 3g when you're receiving 4g speeds..

Nop, H is the symbol that a European rom uses to stand for 3G speed. A rom from the US uses 3G as symbol, while Europe uses H, both may mean HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access)
4G is HSDPA+ which we don't have in our phones, even with lastes Radio.
I still wouldn't change this thing by a new iPhone 4G!

My understanding was that we would benefit from the 4G upgrades made to towers and whatnot, but we wouldn't get 4G speeds obviously.
I was thinking it would be like a, "3.25G" ... as I think somebody said in some thread somewhere.
Somewhat related, I noticed on CM7 when my phone idles it'll say 3G, with whatever bars and then when I use the network, the 3G will become an H.
I think the confusion is because they decided to use an "H" instead of something else, so you don't know what you're on.
The latest tests I've done using the new radio and CM7 yield me around 2450 each time.
Close enough. 4G is around 2500.

It is true, I said it appears on European Roms, even if you are in the US (I am too) and use a port of a rom from a european phone/rom, you'll get the H.. Comprende?
I had a rom like that, and now on the unofficial release of the OTA, CR_Mod rom and I get the 3G just like the H and my download speeds I get only reach up to 300kps few times, and even on full 3G coverage. Speedtest
Not gonna get into the argument over what H means. I am getting almost identical bandwidth and latency results using speedtest.net before and after rooting/CM6(down 3.6Mbps/up 1.3mbps). With stock ROM it said 3G, with CM6 it says H. But there is no difference beyond that in my case at least.
New radio
Ok so after flashing the new radio my downlink jumped to 4.07mbps. The uplink was unaffected.

Yeah my up seems to be the same.
Not very good.
At my GF's house I test randomly and get about 4 - 5.3 down average, at my house I get aprox 3.5 - 4 average and both places maintain a steady 1.6 up. I've read specs on the phone that states the slide (in perfect conditions I assume) is capable of 7.2 Down...
Whoever is saying that H is european only is a moron. To clarify, when you see an H, you are connected to the "3.25"/"3.5"G network, HSDPA. When it just shows 3G, you are connected to the UTMS (3G) network. Speeds on HSDPA are significantly higher, but not the same speed as the HSDPA+, 3.75G or tmobile's "4G". Our phones do not have hardware capable of HSDPA+, just HSDPA. I get around 2-4 mbps with the radio update on hsdpa. In most areas, it seems that your phone will idle on 3G (UTMS) and when data is being actively sent/received, your phone activated HSDPA, but in some areas I've been, such as washington D.C., the phone will idle on HSDPA at all times, rather than switch between 3G and HSDPA. On some stock roms, namely sense ones, there is no separate icon for HSDPA in the framework, hence why you only see a 3G icon on said roms, but on an aosp based rom like cm6, or cm7, or arayraymod, you will see an H when connected to HSDPA.
As for the specs of the slide, yes, HSDPA is *capable*, theoretically, of that 7mbps, but real life speeds don't get that high. Similarly, hsdpa+ is theoretically capable of some 20 or 40 mbps, I don't fully remember, but real life speeds never get above 8 to 16 or something, again, I don't fully remember.

It's always nice to see someone come into a thread like this with real information.
MusicMan374 is exactly right. The reason I bought this phone when it came out was that it was using HSDPA and would be faster than straight up 3g. And indeed it is. Like others have mentioned, typical dl speeds are in the 2 to 4 Mbps range for me, but I have gone up over 5 Mbps in some locations. I am in the Philly area and my phone idles on HSDPA (i.e. I haven't seen the "3G" symbol on any CM roms I've tried on this phone).
You can see what network type the phone is using under settings -> about phone. In the CM roms you'll find it under status -> mobile network type. Don't remember if it is in the same location for stock rom, but I remember it is there.

Yes, the stock espresso rom does not show H when connected to HSDPA, it just shows 3G, but if it says HSDPA in mobile network type, you're on hsdpa. Hsdpa for me greatly increases dl speeds. When HSDPA isn't active, just regular 3g, I get about up to 1 mbps, most of the time under. Almost as bad as edge.

Is there anyway to increase the signal strength of the Note 4?
I have to put the phone up in my upstairs window to get the Spark icon to come on. When I do that, it sometimes switches back to 3g.
I know the Galaxy S3 had an external antenna test port near the battery when you removed the back cover. I don't see any similar ports on the Note 4. BTW, I never used the test antenna port on my Galaxy S3 since I heard it could damage the internal antenna.
There seems to be some electical contacts under the cover of the Note 4. Any ideas on what they are?
I contacted Wilson Electronics and a rep there told me that they aren't allowed to boost or amplify the Spark signal. The FCC won't allow it and Sprint in clamping down on this technology because they want to stay ahead of their competitors.
http://www.wilsonelectronics.com/
I remember people using Pringle cans in the old days with their wireless routers.
Is it possible to extend the Note 4 antenna with a wire? I'm just shooting in the dark.
Thanks.
Slash
I have an issue where I will be getting LTE when the phone is sleeping and as soon as I wake it, the phone will drop to 3G. As funny as it sounds I used a plastic ruler to wake up the phone so I my hands or arms would not interfere with the signal and it still does it. This must be some kind of software thing because I used Open Signal to monitor the bands and it legitimately connects to LTE while the phone is sleeping and then switches to 3G when it comes out of sleep. So if I am ever downloading big files or uploading files I usually do it overnight where I will not bother the phone.
I get 2 bars LTE at all times and full signal 3G.
Same problem here. Drops to 3g like hot potato...nexus 5 on my other line holds on to lte b41 like it's life depended on it....
I don't have the note 4 currently (Note 2).
However, with LTE or 3G a "corner reflector" works with the Note 2.
Basically, cut out a box so you're left with only 3 "sides" in a corner, and line it with foil. (Trial and error on the size, I think 12" would be overkill but should work, although a smaller one would as well).
Then, you use a block of foam or such to prop the device somewhere within the corner and also "aim" the corner reflector towards a tower. By trial and error, you can find the best position. It's helped if there's a dialing code (like ##DEBUG# on note 2) that lets you monitor signal strength while you move things around. The trial and error can take some effort...
Wikipedia page on corner reflectors
Example of DIY corner reflector instructions for WiFi antennas
Adding the corner reflector makes the omnidirectional antenna act more like a directional antenna.
If you knew exactly where in the Note 4 the antenna(s) are and what frequency(s), you could calculate out the ideal size of the reflector and position for the device inside the reflector, but I found it easy enough to just experimentally move things around with trial and error.
I've got the same issue. What sad is my area is spark enabled so I should be able to connect to Sprint's 800 mhz (or 850 mhz?) lte network or all. Three frequencies and be on spark. But nope, I'm on crappy 3g but my Note 3will connect to lte.
My Note 4 will connect to lte but it won't hold a connection as good as the Note 3.
Thanks for the reflector info. I will attempt this tonight.

Since my issue is indoors and 800mhz penetrates walls better than 2.5ghz, I figure the priority should be band 26, 25 and Last would be 41?

Because Band 26 has not rolled out extensively as of yet, Go to antenna search and see what is rolled out in your area.
NEXTEL LICENSE HOLDINGS 4, INC. Towers are generally listed as such (Band 25 and 26) look at the operating frequency 1900 (Band 25) 860 (Band 26) (if live)
Clearwire Spectrum Holdings Iii, Llc Towers or Sprint Spectrum LLP is Band 41, if dual radios exist in your area or if you area is completely converted.
Change Band priorities is an excellent idea, especially if you are in a Spark area.

I'll take a look at antenna search but based on Sprint, my area is Spark enabled, which I thought means all 3 bands are available. Or am I wrong?
Changing band priority does not work..I've tried it..
Check out Signal Check in the play store too, will show you what you are on.... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blueline.signalchecklite&hl=en
The network will ultimately decide where to put your device based on load balancing and bandwidth/airlink saturation. It typically goes B41,B25,B26. All that changing band priorities does is change what your phone scans for first. Once connected, it's up to the network what band you end up on.
I think something is wrong with the note 4. I am in downtown baltimore., which is supposed to have excellent SPARK coverage. I'm sitting here in my apartment and very very rarely the phone does somehow connect to LTE spark. When it is connected I get somewhere between 6mbps - 35mbps and the signal is -90 to -100 which is pretty good for LTE. As I'm flying along enjoying my 3 minutes of LTE spark, my phone just decides that LTE sucks and it should switch to the 3g signal which gives me 0.12 mbps (f***ing sprint). Then no matter what I do, how many times I do ##72786#, how many times I restart my phone, or turn mobile data on/off it still wont get LTE back..until randomly a couple hours later. Is my note 4 retarded?? The reason I don't think it's a signal issue is that I often get > 30mbps when I am connected. This has to be some software issue where the note 4 thinks that the 0.12mbps 3g signal is somehow "Stronger" than a 35mbps LTE signal.

I agree, I'm in Chicago-land and when i get Spark I always get 1 bar and than it switches to 3g

By default the band priority is Band 25 - 1, Band 25 - 2, and Band 41 - 3. So the phone is already set up correctly as far as priority.
Also as has been stated LTE and Spark are not the same thing. They are two seperate bands. By default the phone tries to use Spark. If it can't it then switches to LTE and if it still has issues it switches to 3G..
how can i make spark faster on my sprint note 4? it says i am in a spark area and i am only getting 2mbps that is ridiculous
http://coverage.sprint.com/IMPACT.jsp?ECID=vanity:coverage#!/ it says my area has sprint spark and it is on the "best" coverage wise
Can't see your coverage without your zip code.

It says best and its still slow keeps saying i am on band 26 how do i switch to band 41
Is that exactly where you're at? Input an intersection closest to your home and see what it says. Does going outside make a difference? Update your profile lately followed by a long battery pull? If none of that helps then see what sprint says. I don't have spark where I'm at, just regular lte.

yea i put an intersection and it is a spark area. the rest surrounding it is lte. i used signalcheck pro and it says i am on band 26. isnt 41 spark?

and i chatted with sprint and they told me this area has spark now. i think they are lying to me lol
Can't think of much except trying ##72786# and if that doesn't work call tech support and see if your SIM card was setup correctly in the system. Are you on the stock Rom? Factory reset?

If I'm not mistaken, Spark adds bands 26 and 41 to the standard LTE band 25.
On a recent trip to Orlando/Disney World, I did some prioritizing on the bands and had success on first try. I was streaming Netflix via LTE to hotspot to roku 3 to TV- indoors. And had good coverage most of the trip. Plus downloading gigs of data.
Band 41- fast outdoors but not so penetrating for business structures
Band 26- lower frequency penetrating LTE
Band 25- not as penetrating as band 26 and also the common LTE band used by non-Spark LTE phones and towers. Potentially overcrowded.
I don't know why but Spark phones priority should be prioritized away from band 25 but currently default them as highest priority band. In theory, band 41 should be highest for outdoors, band 26 would be priority for indoors, if available and penetration hinders band 41. When higher priority bands unavailable reverting to band 25. By then you may prefer Wi-Fi to band 25. Apparently the same applies to band 26 in some locations. It's all about location and availability; home Wi-Fi would most likely be preferred over Spark but motel/resort low-valued-complimentary Wi-Fi with browser authorization/TOS may not.
Got your MSL code? Try this prioritizing below using ##3282# LTE/LTE priority. I did this rather blindly, not looking at connection speed or band utilized. I get LTE at home too. I don't think it's Spark but the settings are not interfering with LTE bands as far as I can tell.
You should at least see band 41 outside, if within range. Indoors, it may revert to band 26, if available.

Thanks for replying. This is how I have it set up. I'm guessing its just the area is super slow or something.

Does anyone have proof changing these helps? I changed mine and forgot the screenshot how the default was setup does anyone know the default arrangement?

When I was vacation, my indoor 4G data was sporadic. I was getting a lot reverting to 3G or a spinning effect like a loss of sync.
There was a persistent mod I tried in KitKat that didn't seem to work; a lot of waiting to sync. The settings I posted were very stable and quickly synced in the Orlando area. Very few dead data spots and most of those were underground attractions.
I do believe band 25 was highest by default. I think I switched bands 25 and 41 but not positive. I recall looking this up because that seems to be a non spark area setting. Ideally, refreshing the PRL/Profile would set the priority bands based on location/coverage but I don't think it does. Non spark as default on a spark enabled phone isn't ideal if the spark settings have no impact on non spark areas' reception. IMO, there is no impact so the default settings are incorrect; these are ideal. But slow data is slow data. I was able to hold a steady HD stream for my Roku, indoors with it.
Greetings,
So, after 10 years with VZW I have switched back to Sprint. I got this really awsome Samsung Galaxy Note 4 which I thought I wouldn't like but actually ended up loving. HTC I still miss you.
What I would like to do is completely disable LTE Band 25. Or FORCE Band 41 connection. Possible? How?
I have found many a threads for other devices about disabling bands 26 and 41, successful. Also one about disabling Band 25, unsuccessful.
Then many threads for other devices about changing band priority. Which I have done. However some suggest that this band priority change only applies to the inital LTE scan at boot, true?
I get very poor band 25 speeds at my home. VERY POOR like 200kbps to 600kbps. Some rooms in my home I will switch to Band 41, with speeds 1Mbps to 14Mbps. If I goto another room, it will stay on B41 for a little while but eventually switch back to B25. But honestly, if I can't get band 41, I would rather be 3G than on B25.
Anyone know how I can disable band 25 ? Or force band 41 ? Or some dirty hack messing with band 25 table selection/connection criteria that would make it always fail to connect to that band?
Thank for any insight,
-TheHoovie

I think this question was asked awhile back and I believe the answer was that it wasn't possible :crying: but maybe someone else can chime in if it is possible. But from my memory, I believe it wasn't possible
