[Unsolved] Screen issues - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Video of the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzIx9SHj6MQ&feature=youtu.be
According to my sister it has always had the screen "artifacts"as shown in the video where certain pixels are the wrong colours (which apparently never set off any alarm bells in her head... ). But apparently the screen and device stopped responding correctly a while back which i have been able to find out can be fixed by taking the back off the device. I can not use the recovery on the device since it just displays multicolored static on the screen, same thing happens when the device is plugged in to charge while powered off. I told her to get all important data off the device and factory reset it so the device is all at factory defaults to rule out software issues. After that didn't work i took the back off the device to check to see if the screen was connected correctly and to see if there were any obvious issues such as the cable being visibly damaged or disconnected etc.
Image of the issue when charging: http://i.imgur.com/Kat1RoC.jpg
So everything is stock on the device. It has never ran anything but official updates directly from Google.
The device is out of warranty and considering the cracks on the corners of the case i doubt Google/Asus would be happy to fix the device out of warranty without it getting expensive. It would be nice to fix it if it is possible or financially viable.
Any ideas and suggestions appreciated!

Have you tried a factory reset? If not, have you tried reflashing a stock rom, wiping everything?

It has been factory reset. I have not flashed a new ROM to it.
I have actually fixed that issue by putting some padding in to prevent the cable from flexing so much inside the case. So the device now functions as an e-reader and web browser. But it still cannot play video or cope with scrolling through images and so on due to the tearing. It gets worse the more that is updated on the screen. This may still be a cable issue.
I would flash a new kernel and ROM to the device but download mode doesn't work since no computer can recognize the device. In download mode and recovery the screen shows the static as shown in the image meaning i cant really use it easily. Since it is still running stock recovery i cant just flash a zip file, since download mode doesn't work it may be difficult to do the above.
But i only have experience with my own Galaxy S2 which runs custom everything. So my experience is with Odin and CWM, so i am not familiar with download mode for other manufacturers.

The second image, I know this. I was fiddling with the ribbon cables one day and I also got that distorted screen.
If it appears when charging, sounds like...the cable is not grounded or something and the signal(to/from the ribbon cable) is being distorted. But that is just a guess, it could be anything.

Its not exclusive to charging though therefore i dont think it is power related. It happens every single time the system displays something on screen outside of Android. So the charging screen, recovery and download mode are all displayed as that.

Have you tried fiddling with said cable when you get the distorted image, in an attempt to perhaps fix it? it's odd that it appears with system messages. This sounds more and more like a true hardware issue(a defective unit) than software or a "simple" ribbon cable problem.

Not while it displays that image. But i have unplugged it and plugged it back in and nothing has helped.
My theory at the moment is that the cable is damaged meaning when the device tries to completely update the screen data goes missing and it struggles. Since videos dont work at all while the android flappy bird clone works flawlessly since it doesn't need to send as much data to update the screen due to the solid background colours and so on. But there are still holes in that theory, for example the issues become many many times worse when the device is in landscape mode.
So as far as i can tell it could be anything from heavily corrupted software to broken vram and anything in between including broken cable (since fiddling with that has fixed a different issue, perhaps its related) to the displays RAM for storing the previous screen update being broken. I can't tell.

Defective VRAM is also a possibility.
But I am not aware of any tool(for Android) that would allow for direct memory scanning of the VRAM. If you end up deciding the tablet is a goner, and want to buy a new one. I'd advise against another N7, it's already old, and the bugs are not worth the hassle.

Yeah, im not aware of any either. I have also been through all the relevant debugging tools. Telling the screen to flash on update actually made the device function much better (where it flashes pink on each update) it stopped the issues from being serious. But lets face it, no one is going to want to use a device with that debugging option left enabled.

a very strange hard brick

Hi!
First of all i got AOKP + Franco kernel for 2w without any problem and I didn't change any option since last week.
This morning i rebooted it, it switched off and it didn't start again.
I cannot switch one my nexus again since then. I have always a black screen, also if I try to enter in download mode or in the recovery.
I tried to connect to my computer and smt times my laptop see a omap4400 (i'm not sure about the name) but after few second it disappears.
Tomorrow I'm going to the service center... But I have a big doubt:
What the hell happened this morning?
Thanks
Remove the battery for 5 minutes and try again.
If that doesn't work,
Follow this guide:
1. Download the zip file from http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f634...eeeee-1465412/, created by Legija
2. Extract zip to whatever location you're comfortable with (I used Android directory)
3. Open up Device Manager (Hold down Windows Key, press R, the type in devmgmt.msc and press OK)
4. Go to actions menu, select Add Legacy Hardware
5. Choose install manually, then have disk. Browse to where you extracted the zip, select the 'inf' file in usb_drv_windows
6. Choose OMAP, you'll get a popup if on Win 7, continue anyway (driver not signed)
7. Once completed with driver, pull battery out of phone, then plug it into USB
8. Double click omap4460_tuna_hs_pro.bat to start the process
9. Once completed, unplug from USB, put battery back in, and power-up!
10. Extra step - depending on what's been done, it may 'brick' again - suggest to do a restore or a wipe reinstall afterwards to be certain (mine bricked again next reboot)

I'm having the exact same problem. I saw my phone at maybe 10% battery in the AM, said screw it and let it die, woke up this morning and plugged the phone in and nothing. No LED light, black screen, completely unresponsive. I've tried every trick in the book, and the only one that seemed to work marginally even was using a different battery, which got my phone to boot to the encryption screen, but then shut off again. It did that twice, and now both batteries are useless.
I used Legija's program to try and bring some life back to my gnex, even though it's not the international version, just in hopes of getting some of my data back (I have already started the replacement process with Verizon since the phone was insured), but I got no luck there either.
It's extremely disappointing and annoying to me that this phone survived all sorts of ROM installations (I was also using AOKP on 4.1 if someone wants to start making connections), reformatting, tweaking, almost every setting on that phone was modified by me.
Not only that but almost any software or hardware problem I did run into I could solve in maybe an hour, but I let my charge run out and the phone just up and bricks itself? Now, that's just bull****... I would be very curious as to an explanation as to WHY on earth this would happen. Very confusing.
Not to hijack the thread, but my interest here is not restoring the phone to working condition but just seeing if I can pull my data off of it. I wouldn't even be posting here had I been able to have an SD card with my gnex, which I figured was unnecessary at the time I bought it since I knew the space on their was enough for me already, and the added branding of "Nexus" brand which had me under the impression it was maybe stable enough by itself. Not a mistake I'll make again..
Is it at all possible to get the data off of my phone at this point? At least partially? I believe encryption makes it impossible but I'm rather stubborn. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

So just to be clear... You've been able to get it to boot all the way up to the encryption screen, right? If so you should be able to get into fastboot (Holding down BOTH volume rockers and the power key.) From there you could relock/unlock the bootloader to do a full factory wipe which might solve your boot issue.
As far as the data loss from the wipe, you could then try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705

I was able to get it to the encryption screen with my old battery that had a little bit of charge left in it twice, but it shut itself down on me both times. So now both batteries are useless.. I took it to the Verizon store hoping they would maybe try one of their batteries, but they just called customer service and told me they're just going to replace it at this point.
I have a feeling the charging mechanism is somehow damaged, because when I did get it to the encryption screen I had it plugged into a wall outlet and it wasn't charging at all. So, I can't turn the phone on whatsoever anymore.. if I could turn it on I could solve this problem... but it simply refuses to boot. The closest I came to interfacing with it was the OMAP Flash script, which did work, but didn't fix the problem.
So maybe if I could get the phone working enough to use ADB with it I could get my data back, but not even that seems possible..

If the phone isn't charging then there's something wrong with the USB port. One way to test that would be to use a battery charger. Also, try a different cable. I've had issues with a few different cables that for whatever reason started to not fit properly in the phone.
If you're USB port has gone bad then you'll need to either A) Always use an external battery charger. B) Get a replacement. C) Fix it yourself (Good guide here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairi...+LTE)+Micro+USB+Charge+Port+&+Main+Mic/9641/1 )

[Q] Screen's gone fuzzy and weird - Solved

My Captivate Glide's screen does this whenever I turn it on:
I didn't drop it or get it wet, it just started doing this randomly.
I live in the UK and ordered the phone unlocked over eBay so I can't take it into an AT&T store, sadly.
Do you guys know if there's anything I could do myself or anything someone more experienced in repairing mobile phones could do to fix the screen?
This is bearing in mind that not many people over here have seen one of these phones though.
Any help would be massively appreciated. Thanks guys.
you was using still GB right? just flash ics via odin, with one click or with a tar file
This is UCLH2 without one click
http://androidromupdate.com/2012/09/...ota-stock-rom/
And here is the latest version with bug fixes (like keyboard light)
http://androidromupdate.com/2012/11/...ptivate-glide/
and there is for one click
http://www.androidauthority.com/captivate-glide-sgh-i927-att-android-4-0-4-ics-uclg9-leak-110365/
i think that only one click wipe your internal storage. but is the bes (in my opinion). try it, dont have anything to lose
No, I already updated it to ICS. Should I reinstall it? Will that fix the screen? How will I manage to do it with the screen all messed up?
if you can put in download mode, then you can. Its weird because i only see that problem with GB. Put in download mode and then reinstall
I just tried putting it into download mode but I get the exact same thing.
Thats weird, the problem is weird because it never happen to me in download mode, maybe you can try it without battery, or let the phone without battery a couple of hours, etc.
Dont Know what you cand o, because if you cant enter in download mode, you will be no able to flash ICS
Hrm... that purple splotch in the bottom left of the screen doesn't look so good... Almost appears as if it had been dropped on that corner at some point in the phone's history. I am tempted to say that is a hardware issue, though. Reminds me of when the flex cable for my laptop's display started shorting out many years ago. Might be repairable, but, might be a costly repair depending on what all needs to be replaced. I can't imagine replacing the software on it will do much, though, sorry to say. You could give it a shot, you can verify if your phone made it into download mode without the display by loading up odin and seeing if it detects under that, and then running the one click install (or any other since you'd have odin running anyway) but I wouldn't expect much.
If you're not getting the Samsung/Rogers logo screen, you're done. Either the screen is physically damaged, or the bootloader is corrupt. There's no saving that one, sadly.
yes, try what Artemis-kun say. put in download mode and connect, and see if odin detected. Or maybe just turn on the phone and wait a little, then try to call to your phone, if the phone ring or appears to be on, then is a hardware problem.
But try what Artemis-kun, maybe you have luck
PD: now i see better the image and it seems little different from what it happens to me. if you turn on, inmediatly happen that? or screen banish slowly?
AW: [Q] Screen's gone fuzzy and weird - need help please
There should be a cable, connecting the hardware to the display. Maybe it loosened, you should check out the video of a guy tearing his glide apart, hopefully youll find something to repair there.

Hey guys, you'll be glad to hear I finally fixed my Glide by installing a new screen assembly from Repairs Universe.

Stuck on lock screen

Wondering if someone can help. My boys nexus 7, screen is unresponsive and is stuck on the lockscreen.... It seems the problem happened after a system update downloaded(shown in the image)
Anybody any idea how to fix this
Photo
Try resetting the device by holding the power button.
You could also try to safe mode, by holding the volume down button while booting (safe mode text should appear upon bootup in the bottom left corner).

There are at least 3 possibilities.
1. On some, the touch responsiveness decreases with the battery being drained. In other words, the lower the battery percentage, the more unresponsive the touch becomes. Reaching a certain low level of battery would kill touch completely. But this usually occurs with a tab that has had responsiveness issue all along. If it's something new that takes place only at the downloading of the update, then it might not be. Just to make sure, turn it off completely, charge it fully, then turn it on again.
2. The touch problem just occurs out of the blue. You want to make sure the hardware is not at fault. The only way to do this is to remove the back cover and reseat the two-pronged amber cable from the digitizer, and the white/silver cable connecting the daughter card to the main board. If there's a problem of this kind, no amount of software workaround will cure it.
3. The update is the culprit. If this is the case, the only thing to do would be to flash another rom (preferably a custom one that has more or less been sanitized by a known dev.
If you have a lot of data you're not willing to part with, then you can try an OTG USB mouse to navigate and allow the update to install to see if the tab would return to normal after. I wouldn't advise this route since I've heard and read a lot about people bricking the tab from taking automatic updates. Stay away from anything official if you can help it.

PX5 stuck showing warning image, buttons unresponsive.

I just bought a PX5 unit, which seemed to be working perfectly until I finished installing it into my car and now it has become unresponsive with a black screen and a yellow rhombus with an exclamation point in the middle (unable to upload image as new user).
If I turn off the ignition, it will turn the stereo off and the android screen briefly shows before going into sleep. None of the buttons are allowing me to get past the screen and in to android. The reset button seems to do nothing, android is definitely running in the background, just unsure as to why this screen will not close. Any ideas?
Hi, I think I saw a yellow rhombus with an exclamation point when I was installing my radio and rear view camera was not connected to the radio. I think that it is a warning about missing video signal when radio is displaying live feed from a rear view camera.
So, one explanation for your issue could be that the radio thinks you are reversing, and the rear view camera is not connected to the radio. If I understand it right, radio can switch to rear view camera display mode based on two conditions 1) canbus information 2) +12v trigger signal.
For the condition 2), you could check that nothing is unintentional connected to reverse detect wire. If that does not help, then you could perhaps try to disable reverse view feature in the configuration menu before installing the radio to the car and/or find a working canbus configuration settings.
Please notice that I'm a beginner with Android head units and your problem might well be something totally different!!
Thanks for your reply. Some of your post seems to relate to my issue definitely, I think it is linked to the rear view camera which is currently disconnected. However I am unable to get into any configuration options. None of the buttons/resets I try get me past the exclamation screen, I can only see android once I turn off my ignition when it tells me it is closing down. None of the various reset button combinations seem to do anything with my head unit either, can't seem to reset it properly. Its strange, I will reattach the camera tomorrow and see if that brings any joy. I don't know anything about this stuff myself but I am wondering if I did something to the head unit to brick the non-android side somehow.
Edit: Unfortunately reattaching the camera did not change anything.
Update. I have managed to find a way in to the Android side if I connect my phone via bluetooth to the stereo, it then lets me use the split screen function via the top bar menu to put the warning screen other screen to the side, however whenever I touch the screen or attempt to use the android interface, my stereo goes back to the warning screen, none of my inputs via the stereo buttons or the touch screen seem to be registering with the Android side? Very confused. I have also tried as many button combination resets I can find and I have not been able to successfully get into the recovery menu, or any change except rebooting.
Was your unit professionally installed?
Also, what did the re-seller suggest when you contacted them for support?
No the unit was not professionally installed. I am not sure how I've become stuck with the problem. I made some minor changes in factory settings but nothing I thought would of caused this. The seller is yet to respond and its been a couple of days, but I have requested the hardware reset methods for this unit or any other solutions.

Check the reverse wire on the back of the unit...if necessary disconnect it to ensure no reverse signal is received.
If your unit can boot into android normally then you will have to figure out why the reverse wire is receiving signal .
Check your connectors to avoid any of them to be loose.

Everything has been disconnected from the unit except the power cable to car and and canbus, from what I can tell nothing is loose. Unit will not boot without the canbus box whatsoever, not sure if that is meant to happen.

Yes, canbus decoder need to be connected for power up the HU. If you dont need the decoder box you need rewire the harness.
I think I am going to have to request a refund and return it. Still no reply from the reseller and I am not sure what else I can try, everything that is not needed to power it has now been removed. I can't send links or else I would update the thread with a video of the touch/physical buttons being completely unresponsive even when I manage to get to Android. The unit has definitely developed a fault and I am unable to reset it. Admittedly it could be my fault somehow as it was working for the first few boots, but unless they give me something to try I am just going to have to send it back.
Quick bump. Has anyone got any further ideas? I bought off Aliexpress so contact with the seller is slow and painful, they do not seem to understand the issue and just keep telling me to disconnect all wires and reconnect. Which has been done many times. If anyone wants to post a link to the video for me I would be happy to send them it privately.

I would start a dispute with them. I had a device that they sent with similar problems and plenty of issues, which they would not help with or would not understand. Best option is to dispute to get a new device or a full refund. Could you send the video?

Yeh I have a dispute open currently, just was hoping it would inspire the seller to actually offer up a working way of resetting the device. Had to add link below seperately as needed to be ten or most posts.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujHacKESAT8&feature=youtu.be
The stereo defaults as the warning image black screen and I can only get android up using the multiwindow button with a long press. Then the android side will not register any input and will keep trying to put the black screen to the front.
Update: I have been told by Aliexpress I can have a partial refund and keep the unit, or a full refund if I return to China. Anyone have any ideas how I would go about resetting the unit if I took the partial refund? To be honest I think my only option is to return it and get the full amount back but any ideas would be welcome! Shipping to China and awaiting a refund is going to take weeks, would rather just get it working if possible.
deano35: any progres? I have the same problem as you. This is my post from PX5 MTCD/E Head Unit Discussion Thread
" Hi , I have https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/DtwdJIt its px5, Mtce_gs_v2.90c. Now I have a little problem with rear camera. I bought reverse camera and tried to connect it into front camera input(I was curious how it would look like) and since then its stuck on camera view. Even after disconnecting camera. Only solution was disable "prohibit reverse" in factory settings menu, but with "prohibit reverse" disabled is obviously not showing reverse camera when I gear the reverse down. Everything is shown in this video. https://photos.app.goo.gl/XbYUHApzT8qTezkq6 Thanks for any advice. "
Take a look on the video, its similar as yours.

[SOLVED][Q] CQATest application appears with emergency led flash light

Hi,
I'm wondering if there's anyone else who is facing this problem or I'm just unlucky.
On last Sunday, when I was listening to YouTube Music at a low battery (around 15%), after a while the phone shut itself off. I guess it was just the phone ran out of battery so I tried to charge it. But the moment I plugged in the charger, the hidden emergency flash light in the front turned on (the one on top right). When the phone successfully booted up, an application called CQATest appeared with a notification. The phone won't charge and take SIM card anymore since then.
I've done some research and tried many methods to fix it, including reboot in the recovery, factory reset, using adb to change boot mode, reflash the rom, disabling the CQATest app. None of them could solve my problem. Disabling the CQATest app does let me to have signal again, but I still cannot get the phone charge. It shows Turbo Power connected, but not charging.
Is there anybody facing the same issue, or even better, have a solution?
Thank you.
Update: I found a solution for this. I put my phone to fastboot mode and charge it from there, overnight. Next morning, it's working normal again.
You can always try a custom ROM. And make sure to format every partition in TWRP before - format, not just wipe.
If that works you can try other stuff. If not you have a hardware issue is guess and only a phone repair could fix that.
PS: try a different charger. If it's only not charging it might be an issue there. And have you tried to charge it while the device is shut down?

Thank you for your reply. Yes I did try another charger. However I'm using a Qualcomm qualified charger so I don't think that's an issue. I brought it to UbreakIfix and they told me it's a motherboard problem so the only way to fix it is to change the motherboard. It'll cost a phone to do that. I'm just wandering if there's any body else who is having the same issue. Because my problem appeared out of no where.
That's normal. Hardware problems often appear out of nowhere all the sudden. And it's always hard the really on them down to a source.
And yes, repairs for not typical phones are always expensive. On my first Z Play the screen cracked. Seeing the price of a repair and realising I could get an unused Z2 Play for the same money you can guess what I did. Can't say I regret it too much.
