With G4 root, WHO will try EXTRA 4G/LTE band unlocking? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I came across this thread earlier in the year:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...ad-progress-please-leave-im-updating-t2871269
Seems @olokos posted this and @BlackSoulxxx who made this exploit possible on other devices...it now remains a question as to whether it will work on the G4 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset. This phone is superior in many areas and to make it EVEN better, would be to unlock otehr TDD/FDD bands (even unlocking 1 or 2 more would be great), would be hugely beneficial for those who want the ONE phone working just about everywhere...and travel A LOT.
Root is only about a week old on the G4, so I know I'm going 'early' with this...but there's some great potential here. Anyone more experienced (and with more courage) want to give this a go and see how they fair?
RoOSTA

Don't all jump up at once. I'd have a crack, but being my first and only LG phone valued over $800 to me, I don't want to be the first unsuccessful idiot who tried and failed
RoOSTA

Does this post help?

Thanks for the reply @phineous. seems as though unlocked bootloader is a pre-req, which I do not have on my H818P, just root.
Fingers crossed something changes soon...would love additional band functionality.

Oops, I was in a hurry and didn't read it, just remembered it from when I was trying something similar. Here's another post worth looking at, but it also may not apply since the bands were operating on the phone before the software was changed.

Need advice!!

Im wanting to upgrade with at&t, and would like to know what the expectation is for an unlocked bootloader or bypass for this device is? Switching carriers isn't an option
I currently have an s5, that I'm ditching. I just can't stand not having a stock Google ROM on it. I'm just trying to get a temperature check before I get into another device.
I know this question isn't easy, but maybe some educated guesses on how long it took for the g2 to get custom recoveries, etc. I could see myself being patient with it for a while, but I'm wanting to port android L sans theming and its hard to justify buying a dated device just to accomplish it. (Even though this is last gen 801)
Hope that make sense, maybe some of you knew something going into the purchase that reassured you. Sweeping generalizations are welcome, seriously I haven't been following much with the brand and I understand att is the worst of the carriers in this regard.
Please don't mark me as an impatient type, just trying to make am informed decision, and I certainly won't nag the devs to death, I've seen the donation thread, eek.
Thanks.

This device is not as popular as the S5 is, there will probably less involvement from the Developer community, although this is a game changer for LG. I love the phone, Root was fast because of the S5, but a bootloader unlock may be a few months down the road. There really is no definitive answer yet, if you want pure Google I would look at Nexus devices verus this one. Verizon is annoying with locking down the bootloader because T-Mobile still doesn't do it, The T-Mobile variant is already unlocked with TWRP
Thanks, I ended up going with the one m8, since its been opened up for at&t already, and the gpe version is out. Best buy had an awesome deal on the g3, but I ended up paying a little more for the m8 to have that open flashing ability at the cost of certain lg hardware awesomeness.
I had a hard time with the width of the lg, which also influenced the decision a little, since Id likely drop the m8 less, and I don't do bumpers, just the t-glass over the screen, plus the free replacement screen for 6 mos, is hard to beat.
Thanks, I'm sure I'll be back to the lg at some point, darn at&t should at least offer a bootloader unlock to those who own the devices. T-Mobile is definitely getting a second look right now...

[Q] Expectations of US G4 root/unlocked bootloader?

I'm about to upgrade my Verizon account, and I'm trying to decide between the LG G4 and HTC One M9. Right now, rooting and bootloader unlocking are possible on the M9. Difficult; but possible. However, the G4 still lacks carrier-specific forums on XDA. I know that the G4 was only released on Verizon at the beginning of this month, but I would have expected to see more movement on its development by now.
Is it reasonable to think that the G4 will ever have root or bootloader unlock on Verizon? The G3 has an all-in-one toolkit, but that took a whole year. Then again there are rumors on here that LG might open up bootloader unlocks for all variants.
I want to want this phone so bad, but it's dead in the water if I'll be stuck on stock firmware without root for 2 years. Is it still just too early to expect anything and the hacks will likely flow soon? Or are things really moving slow? I'm not asking for an ETA. I'm just wondering if there's reasonable hope for anything to happen.
I'm in the same boat as you, but on at&t. I am planning on buying the G4 tomorrow. I think root will be here before too long; jcase has rooted the at&t variant but hasn't released the method, presumably because it is unsafe. I figure the worst case scenario is I get the G4 and wait it out, if no root by fall, sell the phone and buy the new Nexus 5 or whatever they'll call it.

I'd forgotten about jcase's news. I guess mostly I was just worried by the lack of carrier-specific forums. I've never seen it take this long for a flagship phone before.
I have 2 more weeks to make my choice. I may go your route.
We will get Root and Bootloader access, it is just a matter of time since the devs (or rather some of them) already have it and are working on making a safer method to do it.
As far as a direct unlock from LG, that is never going to happen. They have personally stated they have no plans to do the unlocker for any of the "older models" of the G4 (So no AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc.).
While I do understand your concerns as Root is very important to most of us and it seems like an eternity waiting for it, but trust me, this device can certainly hold its own just based on its own merits.......Yes Root will be nice and bring forth welcome modifications and removal of bloatware, but in the mean time the phone is still an incredible piece of technology and is also a great feel in the hand.
Overall I would say get yourself the G4, you will not be sorry.

I'm a pretty heavy root app (and custom recovery) user. I like making regular nandroid backups. I use Titanium Backup all the time for so many different functions. I love my root-enabled Tasker profiles and apps like VideoReg Pro with save-to-SD capability. Plus, a bootloader unlocked phone just means so many more ROMs and a much simpler process to try them out.
I agree it's an amazing phone (hardware), but the software side of things is even more important to me. Thus my dilemma.

I fully understand, trust me I am the same way. I got my G4's on 6/17 and this is the longest I have ever owned a smartphone without Bootloader & Root Access.......It really sucked for me at first (as I did not know it was still locked down when I got it and had I known that before hand I honestly would have gone for the Moto N6 instead) after a week or so with the G4 though I am super happy with my decision and now I just see Root as being the eventual icing on an already fantastic cake.

You and me both, buddy. I ended up with the US991 because I was dumb and did not check the root status before I bought the G4 (Don't get me wrong I love the phone and everything, just should have done my research is all)
We technically already have root. It's just a matter of being safely packaged and released. I give it another month or 2 before we see a long hand method on how to root our phones without bricking them.
In all honesty the G4 is far superior to the m9 in just about every way, aside from the forward facing speaker of the m9.

That’s debatable. I prefer the smaller screen and resolution myself. I'd rather not sacrifice CPU/GPU cycles and battery life for pixels I can't even see. I mean, the G4 has 4x the pixels of my 24" monitor. That's just stupid
Then there's the snapdragon 810 in the M9 that some say is horrible, and others say is amazing. And yes, the stereo speakers would be nice.
If the M9 had a removable battery and the G4's camera, I wouldn't even be here. The camera is really important to me though, and the M9's looks like a toy compared to the G4's.

Oh the G4 is deff display overkill. And I'd be with the m9 personally if the camera was on par with the G4 and s6, even without a removable battery.
I went with the G4 for the camera and sd card. I have kids and taking a million pics of them are more important than hearing my ring tone and music louder without a Bluetooth speaker.
I prefer a largerish phone after my s5 and the G4 didn't really feel much larger aside from width a little.
Plus I got a free battery and 32gb SD card, so there's that too.

Yeah, we have pretty much the same requirements. Those kids move so fast, an average phone camera just won't cut it anymore. I'm tired of blurry pictures
I've used every Samsung Galaxy flagship until now. Forget Samsung and their Apple-chasing, anti-user policies. I need an SD card dangit!
Some phones take longer to get root than others, but being how this is LG's flagship, and LG has a growing followship, there will be root very soon. Just be patient! This phone kicks butt. I typically root to get easy tethering, ad removal, and bloatware removal, but this phone is damn good out of the box WITHOUT root! get it and don't look back! you won't regret it.

What is taking so long for G4 to get root??

I really want the g4 to get root access. I even have the H815 model but its a United States model. Is there any rooting methods for my model yet? I tried the LG Dev website and said doesnt support it yet.

There are some threads already about this, but to answer, it could be lots of factors. Some I read and some I made up
-Devs don't want to post and provide support for a 119 steps guide.
-The method they found is so risky that even doing it successfully has high chances of bricking the phone.
-The root exploit might reveal a concerning security hole so exploitable by malicious Apps/hackers that LG is gonna patch it right away.
-They're making a KOOL App/Scrip with some extras and a nice UI, capable of overcome any possible issues. Like survive the most hostile OTAs
-They might want to sell that ^ App.
-The App could be ready but some of the involved developers are not happy with it.
-They could be waiting for a $bounty$ that justifies the time they have spent on the project.
-The method they found does not qualify for that bounty.
-They have a life, Vacations and a nice Summer. Why to spend it in front of a monitor?
Then how long does it usually take for a stable way to root on a new device?

Depending on the device it can take months. For example when i was developing for the Samsung S3. The USA Variant was rooted in around 1 month after the phone came out.
But the Australian one. Diff File Partition and had LTE took almost 6 months extra time to root because of the changes.
So just be patient buddy, you will know when it comes out. It's one of them things like a game bug you are waiting on. It takes time to Test it, source devices, package the software, approve the package. and test them on many phones from around the world. This all takes time cobba.
None of us want a pre-Release that could potentially BRICK our device. I didn't pay 800$ to buy a bookmark you get me?

In simple words bounty. Sooner, you raise it, earlier you get it. Just joking. I think, we all G4 users equally wants the Root on our device, nobody is an exception, sorry!

Devs don't usually wait for bounties to go up.It's probably more annoying on their part to hear constant whining than waiting for more money (which never pays out that much anyways). Any root method they have will qualify for the bounty I posted. The unlock bootloader will be the only part that might not qualify.

Is this phone pretty much dead on launch as far as the dev community goes?

I got this phone mostly because the hardware specs were top notch and my old Zenfone 2 (Z00A) had amazing CM support and even an official bootloader unlock. The ZS570KL still has yet to get so much as a root. Going from CM to the bloated, ugly stock ROM hasn't been fun and I can't wait to get something better. I've prodded ASUS for info on a bootloader unlock and they have basically just said that they can't comment on a release date, or if it's even coming at all.
Is there any active development for this phone or is it just dead?
it's active, but what you see here, is all answered questions that we ask already, so there isn't much we can do , until we get from asus. And then alert every develop out there to start making custom roms for this phone.
I think many people like myself are waiting on the bootloader unlock before buying. If they are going to release it, it better be soon. Else they risk newer phones coming out that trump the specs of this phone that ARE developer friendly. This ship had almost sailed to be honest. What are they waiting for?

Yeah, I'm almost regretting buying it to be honest. I really expected it to be popular in the dev community especially given ASUS' history and that bootloader unlocks are already available for the non deluxe ZF3 and even the ZS550KL. The LG V20, the other phone I was heavily considering waiting for, came out almost a month after this phone already has some ROMs coming out.
This phone has amazing specs and design but is just let down so much by terrible firmware and a completely dead dev community. It's a shame.
Your absolutely correct. Such a shame that a beast of a phone goes quietly in the night. It would've been such an upgrade from my Nexus 6P.
My wild guess is that Asus will release our unlock around April-June when phones are starting to come out with the next snapdragon chipset and 6gig ram is all over the market. At that time, the qualities that make this special will be gone. I don't understand this logic at all.
I really like this phone but all the ways Asus tried to kill its success boggles my mind. The lack of an official bootloader when all their other models have one is just another nail in the coffin of an otherwise really good phone. I thought Asus had learned their lesson... guess not.
The 3 biggest reasons for failure in the dev community:
1. No Bootloader (yet)
2. Price
3. Availability
Its dumbfounding. Such a beautiful phone with amazing specs and Asus care absolutely zero about marketing this phone outside Asia. I had to buy it online because they decided not sell it in Canada. And even online the availability is limited to Taiwan only with every reseller getting it from there in short supply. I don't even think there is a north american model. Why not have faith in your brand? Asus said they didn't think the deluxe would do well in north america with all the competition so they abandoned it. They also thought the phone would not sell because its too expensive but then realized demand for it exceeded the supply and decided to increase production.

Seems like a surefire recipe for failure to me....
I have the SD821 versian, I had to pay through the teeth to get it then when it gets shown to others thet all want to know where to get it and how much it cost. Word of mouth is a great way to do business but the product MUST be available.
I had the subforum tab open to check up on this later, but I'm updating some software right now and noticed this post title... I still have the phone unopened in the box Amazon shipped it in. I guess this is Asus' loss releasing a phone during the only extended return period of the year. I've read a few negatives on the ZF3 Deluxe like low headphone volume and intermittent Bluetooth, but unlocking is what I want.
Since I have until the end of next month to return it to Amazon I figured I would pick up the OnePlus 3T and give it a try - free 15 day return period. I thought, what the heck - I paid more for the ZF3 so why not get the 128GB 3T? Added it to my cart and on the checkout page it gave an estimated date (was within 9 days). I wanted to see what I said the ETA would be on the 64GB model that was listed as shipping within 3 weeks and removed the 128GB model. Went to add the 128GB model back in less than a minute after checking the 64GB model...sold out and it's been like for the last 2 weeks. Talk about frustrating! I ended up ordering the 64GB model and figure I can just send it back to OnePlus when the 128GB's are back in but I'm afraid they still won't be available to order at the end of January. So here is this ZF3 D I don't think I really want. :/
jsheradin, you said the bootloader is unlocked for the other ZF3 models - any idea why not this version of the Deluxe?
If it made any sense, there would be no doubt Asus wanted the ZF3 to fail.

Yep, the unlock is available for everything but the 820 and 821 variants. I assume it's simply that these processors require a little more work to make an unlock utility for, but I'm just guessing at that point.

Actually, the Deluxe 5.5" (ZS550kl) screen has an SD820 and it has the bootloader unlock app. It's just the 5.7" ones that don't.

It does not. The ZS550KL has a single version and it is a snapdragon 625. It has the same processor as the non deluxe ZF3 (Z3520KL) which came out before the deluxes. They probably already made the unlock for the non deluxe and it required very little work to make it work for the 5.5 deluxe. The 820/821 versions did not have that luck and they likely have to make the unlock from scratch.
Hey, I agree with all on this thread. I have the Zen 2 deluxe SE with Cyangenmod and its a great phone. Purchased the Zen 3 but have yet to use it because I cannot root. I also read that Cyangenmod is no longer offering custom ROM or am I not understanding their changes? Does this mean the chances of a custom rom for Zen 3 is out? I also upgraded my wife's phone (S5) to the same Zen 3 deluxe (ZS570KL / 256gb hd / 6gb ram / 821 chip) and she hates it... calls keep dropping signal is low and it does not even say LTE. I did a speedtest comparison betwen her Zen 3 and my Zen 2 and it was faster. Hers is also disconnecting from cellular (AT&T) data and does not show 4G anymore along with no push notifications of emails.
Anyone else having these issues?
Joining in on the bandwagon to vent (really)... This was my # 1 phone to get in 2016, despite the lack of Quad HD screen (especially for the price), but Asus botched it BIG TIME! The price on the SD821 model, even more frustrating, the lack of availability, even during the holiday season, and of course, now announcing their new 2017 models, with no unlocked BLs or Root... what an opportunity missed! Would have been such a strong jab against the 3T, but they ruined it!
I bugged Asus again via email and received this response, again:
"Temporary we haven't got the accurate time the unlock tool would be released for this ZS570KL.
But we will transfer customers' wishes to the related department for further development.
Also please note that ASUS does not actually asssit with unlocking of the Android Bootloader. I must advise that you do so at your own risk, as once the boot loader is unloked it will void your warranty."
I'm just hoping there is an unofficial unlock at this point. The stock ROM seems to somehow get more buggy and slow day by day. Is anyone else having issues with the screen taking forever to turn on after using fingerprint/pressing the side button?

I used this form to submit it: https://vip.asus.com/VIP2/Services/QuestionForm/TechQuery?lang=en-us
I just said, "When can the bootloader unlock utility be expected to be released?"
They responded promptly yet disappointingly. Hopefully if enough of people ask they will finally get around to making/releasing it.
Does anybody know if there is unofficial unlock work being done?
If an unlock is ever made we just need to get someone who knows TWRP to build a recovery and ideally somebody from Lineage OS to start ROM support. I've built TWRP before for a different device and may be able to do the same for this phone but I wouldn't know where to begin to get a ROM working. I feel like no devs even know this device exists. :crying:

The biggest question we should all ask ourselves... "Why did ASUS build this phone in the first place if they didn't have a bootloader unlocker for it?"

Can my S9 be rooted or not?

Hi guys, Im sorry if this is a silly question, I'm not an expert, I remember when it was fairly easy to flash custom roms back in the days of S2, S4... but now things have changed so much that personally I get confused between this many versions and variants... I have read along many posts that suggest my S9 can not be rooted, because of locked bootloader, but I have some mixed up settings(I think) in my S9 that doesn't help me to be completely sure.
My S9 has the model SM-G960U printed on the back., but in my Settings under Device Information, my model displayed is SM-6960U1 and my build number is R16NW.G960U1UES3ARI1; I just want to know if I can really root it, I don't intend to flash custom roms to be honest, Im satisfied with just to be able to root, install my TitaniumBackUp Pro and freeze/defrost apps I use from time to time, I have read also the people root their S9 but lacking vowifi or camera performance, but I don't know if that would apply to me.
Also, I tapped the build number 7 times in order to enable Developer options, and I couldn't find OEM Unlock on it, that is not good isn't?
I just got this S9, hence my caution to ask before jump and flash things that could brick it.
Thanks in advance!!
There's nothing to flash because the bootloader is locked.

Yes. There are some snapdragon variants that can be unlocked (9600) and they're sold in China and South America afaik. Limited support but there is lineage and twrp here.

Sorry for the huge delay, this has been a rough week for me, and many thanks for your answers.
it really sucks though, and I suppose there's not much hope in a possible way to unlock the bootloader in the future?
I'm not that good seller nor I have the will to actually put it on sell, I assume I will have to accept the fact that I won't be able to root this one ever :/

Snapdragon bootloaders have not been unlocked since at least the S7 days (Maybe earlier), buy a Exynos S9 if you want and unlocked BL
I used to root all the time. But don't see the need some the S7. Phones are so optimized stock. I've never needed to. Granted I do miss CMMod

I used to do a lot of Moto tweaking and they're among the easiest but I no longer root or even want to. Though there are a couple of things I miss like Titanium Backup.
