Pretty sure you just have to go straight for an off contract phone.
I hate supporting phones that don't come with unlocked bootloaders by default but, I don't h ave 500$+ to spend.. Especially when I'll be paying the same price for my cellular service either way.
Well I guess we'll just have to wait for the Google announcement on the 29th to see when the Nexus 4comes out huh. After watching the PocketNow review of this phone I was considering it but with a locked bootloader no way.

Not really... Samsung phones (like the S3) have unlockable boot loader on at&t. As does the HTC One X I'm using (although HTC screwed that up in later releases).
Will probably just go with the Note 2 if it has an unlockable bootloader (which it should).

I assume this is totally different than a locked bootloader? Can the boot loader still be locked, yet rooted? Once rooted, is the device's bootloader unlocked at that time? thanks, guys
Yes u can root even with a locked boot loader. You.just can't flash.custom kernels. Although I.don't know if kexec will work or not. I think the guys that.get the Sprint version will be ok with an unlockable boot loader. I am sure that there is someone with an unlocked boot loader floating around. Kinda like the Verizon s3 got a leak of an unsecured boot loader which let us unlock it Just have to wait.and see what.pops up.

Many locked phones have fallen to the powers of the Android community. (I forget what the Korean thread says, but I thought they had cracked their version already.) Only time will tell. There is this post to give you a little start on the lingo. A google search ought to give you a good explanation quickly.
In short though, to answer your questions from a not-quite-so-noob, "rooting" a device gains you access to the software running on the system. Don't like the bloatware that came on the phone? With root access, you can delete them. You can have root without an unlocked bootloader. (Warranty likely voided.)
The bootloader is the first bit of software that the phone runs when the power is turned on, which loads the OS and such, and passes off control to the OS to boot up.With a locked bootloader, you are basically stuck with the updates (if any) blessed by the manufacturer AND the carrier. Unlocked, you can install customized ROMs, swap kernels, custom recoveries (search "nandroid backup"), and even more warranty voiding goodness. YOU decide "how" your phone works.
Now... If your phone DOES break, both acts can be reversed (some exceptions) so you can pretend you didn't do anything you weren't supposed to be doing, and have your "warranty."

Yes but, with HTC you are only marginally better off as they provide incredibly small kernel support. My HTC flyer has an officially unlocked bootloader and Dexter has been working on a JB Rom forever and it's still not in a "Factory release" state like other devices.
I don't blame Dexter but, it's pretty sad. Heck, in the One X+ forum there was announcement by a dev openly stated we should be aware it will be hard to dev for before we even consider it.
As far as Samsung goes, I applaud them for supporting the dev community the way they have in the various ways but, their SAMOLED screens are a bit..well dated looking. When they first came out, they were nice because they were brighter, more vibrant, and colorful. Now I really would love to hop on the IPS displays which are sharper.

I respectfully disagree. LG is not anywhere near HTC, Apple, or Samsung in terms of volume sold. They need all the help they can get and simply cannot afford to lose potential customers. Even HTC and Samsung have been affected by petitions like this. It led HTC to have unlockable bootloaders. Also, in your McDonald's analogy, McDonald's would be losing many customers if they no longer had burgers or other meat products, whereas LG would be gaining customers if they decided to open up a bit. And the community here at XDA (most of whom I would assume are against locked bootloaders) is for the most part, fairly knowledgeable about phones and mobile devices. As we are knowledgeable on the subject, people go to us for advice on their next devices. If LG's bootloaders were unlocked, I can assure you that I (like many other XDA users) would not only purchase the Optimus G for myself, but I would also be much more likely to recommend it. There's ~5 Million members here, of which I would imagine 1-1.5 Million are in the market for a new device. As it offers the best specifications on the market at the moment, I would assume the Optimus G would have to be a thought to most of these people. However, the lack of SD Card support (on the International and Sprint versions), nonremovable battery, and locked bootloaders can potentially deter many of these people from buying it and/or recommending it to their friends, families, and acquaintances and instead, these people could easily opt for roughly equivalent devices made by LG's competitors, such as the One series by HTC and the Galaxy series by Samsung. It never makes business sense to turn away thousands of potential customers, especially when said company is not leading sales figures in the industry.

I mostly agree with your points. I do, however, think that the whole purpose of OEMs locking their bootloaders is to deter people from prolonging the life of their phone and not to protect people from bricking them. Because let's face it, 99.9% of people that even know what a bootloader is in the first place will probably be able to flash their phone without bricking it and exchanging it for a new one at the OEMs expense. So, with that in mind, it only seems logical that an OEM would lock the bootloader to prevent people from taking things into their own hands with such a powerhouse phone that could last for years with proper software updates (that will undoubtedly not happen in a timely manner from LG for more than the first year, if that). They want people to like the phone, be at the mercy of LG for updates, and when those updates end, buy a new LG phone and repeat. So with this standard model, I just don't see how they could care about the very small (in comparison to the general public) development community. Just my thoughts though, I really have no idea what LG's strategy is or what will end up happening.

You know.. I think the bold part is also problematic. While it is a great "theoretical" strategy... the amount of people you piss off is potentially enough that they will never buy your device again.
Back when my Captivate was younger, despite there being many solid ROM options, people were still outraged the phone didn't receive prompt manufacturer provided updates.
Despite the whole "if people knew how to unlock bootloaders, bricks would happen left and right!" argument that I've seen circulating for the last 2 years.. the reality is if people know their warranty is voided, they either do or don't care. If unlocking the bootloader and rooting the phone were just a few ABD commands that would be all the litmus test needed really.
The reality is if people can use ABD then they are probably technically proficient enough to install a custom ROM. If they are too scared for their warranty/afraid of entering commands by text, they are probably not going to want to install a custom rom anyway.

That's how it is on the Nexus series (simple ADB commands), which I doubt is bricked any more than on any other devices.
Back to Scotty's post, I really don't think LG wants to update these phones (that's what the development community is for), so I don't think their goal is to keep you on their software. I don't think the custom software is supposed to serve any purpose but to make people buy the devices in the first place. I do agree that they're concerned that unlocked bootloaders make people more likely to brick (which is likely not true since it's the same people unlocking bootloaders on locked devices as the people who install custom ROMs on others). I actually think that locking bootloaders makes people trying to unlock them more likely to brick in the process. CM ROMs actually make things easier on their update team since the people who care about the OS version are typically the first to try custom ROMs. At the very least, I would like for LG to implement a similar strategy to HTC and Motorola where they keep track of people who unlock, but give a free, painless method. This would make everyone (LG and us) fairly happy.
If there is going to be a lg nexus phone wouldn't it be much easier to unlock the boot loader and have kernel sources? The hardware is the same

Just picked up an M9 this week... Had an M8 prior to that. I've been reading through the forums and spent some time on the M8 forums flashing, testing, and customizing the phone with Roms. I've been reading about the M9 and have noticed some mention that Verizon is firm about a locked bootloader and all. I was curious how on the M8, S-off and unlocking the bootloader was achieved if Verizon is so strict about keeping the phone locked down? Thanks for any responses in advance Looking forward to customizing this beast of a phone. Thank you to all the Devs that make all of this possible!

The M8 was like this when it first came out. Yes Verizon is strict. From what I have been told they are trying to find a Temporary Root Exploit to be able to S-Off and all that goodness. We just have to be patient like the First Model M8 people were. Luckily when I first got my M8 it was rootable and stuff. So just be patient, or feel free to donate to jcase and beaups to help buy them energy drinks.
Everything @Balian67 said an also one tip. Don't do any updates till you are s-off as updates could cause exploit not to work if there is a exploit released.

As soon as im s-off i flash Aosp style roms and never look back....but tbh...sense isnt bugging me like touchwiz did..not that ill stay on stock sense but it isnt atrocious

Totally agree with this!! Oh my lord is there a difference between Touchwiz and Sense. I did go back to Nova Launcher for the actual day-to-day launcher but the framework is...I dare to say...enjoyable to use. This is my first HTC phone, although I've worked on a few for friends, but I'm loving it so far.

So i bought an M9 for myself and a S6 for my wife. This is first i have used touchwiz, it is not intuitive whatsoever. I am happy with my m9

The way Samsung complicates settings drives me bonkers. It just doesn't need to be that complicated.
I'm in S6 trial week. Lol. So far not impressed. The so called super snappy touchwiz has a laggy keyboard whether stock or google. Also don't get me started on Chrome browser lag. Little things here and there that are non existent on even the m8. Overall its snappy but it still has annoying hicups here and there. Gonna take a miracle for me not to exchange for an m9 next weekend.
I had an M7 but not an M8 and had put AOSP on it because Sense just didn't feel right to me.
I bought an M9 because of the retail employee deal of no-contract for $300 and trading in for the new one every year. Ditched my G3 and haven't looked back. I love Sense 7. Not only is the UI smooth and really easy to use, the whole design language flows so well with the physical design of the phone. I don't think I'll be putting a custom ROM on this but I would love root for an ad blocker. I forgot how many ads there were on phones until I had to use this M9 without root.
Is anyone planning on making a bounty thread?

No need really. Bounty threads are worthless distractions too.
For example, one of the last ones claimed only netted the receiver 30% of all promised funds.
Sunshine will likely include vzw some time in the near future...you probably didn't use it on your m7 but it's a standalone app and costs $25.

Well, it worked on the S5, that's for sure. Leading to the most prolific exploit in android history with Towelroot, so I wouldn't say pointless. I'm not sure the exact % that paid their pledges, but I paid mine. The ads in apps and webpages are really starting to bug me honestly, and I miss my battery-saving apps and xposed modules. I jumped to HTC from the S5 specially to restore bootloader access and ultimately CM-based ROM's to my phone experience. I guess leaving Verizon would have been a more thoughtful choice, but oh well. If anyone starts a bounty thread (and yes I know almost everyone thinks its a bad idea), I'm in.
That being said, much respect to the people working on a root method for us currently. You guys make my little phone hacking hobby possible, so thank you.

I don't know exactly how true it was, but when I first got my M8 and found out that I had to pay $25 to get S-OFF, at first I was hesitant...But I kept reading WHY and immediately understood and paid right away. It separates guys like us who pay their pledge from people who DON'T. As I am sure you would EASILY pay the $25 to get S-OFF. I know I would. I almost prefer it this way, because im pretty much sure it comes with tech support for those who need it. If only more americans stood by their word instead of promising things they would never fulfill. I know that this community has always been about contributing and free things to make all of our experiences better. I get that, but all too often, people take the work and claim it to be theirs. I remember a few devs (that I talked to a lot) had this problem with users of the Samsung Moment and HTC Evo 4G. So between all of the devs hard work not being appreciated (especially when they do this stuff for THEIR phone and they release it to us to enjoy and some people are always complaining or demanding features, yet they don't contribute by donating to the dev so they can buy energy drinks to keep their mind going, or beer to help relax them after they finished a massive update that fixed all the bugs and added features and stuff. Then people wonder why they have to pay $25. Well I have been a member of XDA for years, contributed a lot here or on irc chat, and I will gladly pay $25 to get S-OFF, Root, and Custom Recovery. Why? Because since the DAWN of xda, everyones phone has been made far better then what ANY manufacturer gives us. I mean seriously...I would have Android Lollipop on devices that Samsung or whoever has long gone moved on from. Why? Because of XDA, and the devs. I swear if everyone paid $25 these devs would be able to buy all sorts of devices to root for us. I know I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro, and an HTC. So I appreciate it, and you know what? I consider that $25 a donation to have root on devices period. Why? Because without the people who know what they're doing, I wouldn't be able to install xposed, make entire backups of my phone (so if the device fails while on warranty), I can EASILY restore my phone. I had that happen with my old HTC Evo 4G LTE. That phone broke 3 times on me and each replacement bestbuy gave me (2), all I had to do was get S-OFF flash a custom recovery, and do a "Restore" then all my texts were there, apps were there (with data), call logs were there. I can go on. That $25 is security for me. So saying all that, I will sit here as patient as I can be to get S-OFF and when the time comes to hit the pay button, there wont be a second thought. No regrets. No more stress. Any more Andybones roms to flash.

I'm about to upgrade my Verizon account, and I'm trying to decide between the LG G4 and HTC One M9. Right now, rooting and bootloader unlocking are possible on the M9. Difficult; but possible. However, the G4 still lacks carrier-specific forums on XDA. I know that the G4 was only released on Verizon at the beginning of this month, but I would have expected to see more movement on its development by now.
Is it reasonable to think that the G4 will ever have root or bootloader unlock on Verizon? The G3 has an all-in-one toolkit, but that took a whole year. Then again there are rumors on here that LG might open up bootloader unlocks for all variants.
I want to want this phone so bad, but it's dead in the water if I'll be stuck on stock firmware without root for 2 years. Is it still just too early to expect anything and the hacks will likely flow soon? Or are things really moving slow? I'm not asking for an ETA. I'm just wondering if there's reasonable hope for anything to happen.
I'm in the same boat as you, but on at&t. I am planning on buying the G4 tomorrow. I think root will be here before too long; jcase has rooted the at&t variant but hasn't released the method, presumably because it is unsafe. I figure the worst case scenario is I get the G4 and wait it out, if no root by fall, sell the phone and buy the new Nexus 5 or whatever they'll call it.

I know that the G4 was only released on Verizon at the beginning of this month, but I would have expected to see more movement on its development by now.
Is it reasonable to think that the G4 will ever have root or bootloader unlock on Verizon? The G3 has an all-in-one toolkit, but that took 2 years. Then again there are rumors on here that LG might open up bootloader unlocks for all variants.
I want to want this phone so bad, but it's dead in the water if I'll be stuck on stock firmware without root for 2 years. Is it still just too early to expect anything and the hacks will likely flow soon? Or are things really moving slow? I'm not asking for an ETA. I'm just wondering if there's reasonable hope for anything to happen.

I'd forgotten about jcase's news. I guess mostly I was just worried by the lack of carrier-specific forums. I've never seen it take this long for a flagship phone before.
I have 2 more weeks to make my choice. I may go your route.
We will get Root and Bootloader access, it is just a matter of time since the devs (or rather some of them) already have it and are working on making a safer method to do it.
As far as a direct unlock from LG, that is never going to happen. They have personally stated they have no plans to do the unlocker for any of the "older models" of the G4 (So no AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc.).
While I do understand your concerns as Root is very important to most of us and it seems like an eternity waiting for it, but trust me, this device can certainly hold its own just based on its own merits.......Yes Root will be nice and bring forth welcome modifications and removal of bloatware, but in the mean time the phone is still an incredible piece of technology and is also a great feel in the hand.
Overall I would say get yourself the G4, you will not be sorry.

I'm a pretty heavy root app (and custom recovery) user. I like making regular nandroid backups. I use Titanium Backup all the time for so many different functions. I love my root-enabled Tasker profiles and apps like VideoReg Pro with save-to-SD capability. Plus, a bootloader unlocked phone just means so many more ROMs and a much simpler process to try them out.
I agree it's an amazing phone (hardware), but the software side of things is even more important to me. Thus my dilemma.

I fully understand, trust me I am the same way. I got my G4's on 6/17 and this is the longest I have ever owned a smartphone without Bootloader & Root Access.......It really sucked for me at first (as I did not know it was still locked down when I got it and had I known that before hand I honestly would have gone for the Moto N6 instead) after a week or so with the G4 though I am super happy with my decision and now I just see Root as being the eventual icing on an already fantastic cake.

It's not just the carriers either. They told me they have no plans to unlock my 815 TW version that has no ties to any carrier either.

Ahh, I see. I was not sure on those as I do not have one at my disposal so I had no reason to ask about it. Thank you for the information on the matter though.....I guess the H815 is just special?? Seems like it is the ONLY one LG is willing to "Fully Support".

Well Mine is H815. But it's the TW version... The H815 Europe version without any carrier ties is the only one that can unlock. I wish I had known this all when i ordered it .

You and me both, buddy. I ended up with the US991 because I was dumb and did not check the root status before I bought the G4 (Don't get me wrong I love the phone and everything, just should have done my research is all)
We technically already have root. It's just a matter of being safely packaged and released. I give it another month or 2 before we see a long hand method on how to root our phones without bricking them.
In all honesty the G4 is far superior to the m9 in just about every way, aside from the forward facing speaker of the m9.

That’s debatable. I prefer the smaller screen and resolution myself. I'd rather not sacrifice CPU/GPU cycles and battery life for pixels I can't even see. I mean, the G4 has 4x the pixels of my 24" monitor. That's just stupid
Then there's the snapdragon 810 in the M9 that some say is horrible, and others say is amazing. And yes, the stereo speakers would be nice.
If the M9 had a removable battery and the G4's camera, I wouldn't even be here. The camera is really important to me though, and the M9's looks like a toy compared to the G4's.

Oh the G4 is deff display overkill. And I'd be with the m9 personally if the camera was on par with the G4 and s6, even without a removable battery.
I went with the G4 for the camera and sd card. I have kids and taking a million pics of them are more important than hearing my ring tone and music louder without a Bluetooth speaker.
I prefer a largerish phone after my s5 and the G4 didn't really feel much larger aside from width a little.
Plus I got a free battery and 32gb SD card, so there's that too.

Yeah, we have pretty much the same requirements. Those kids move so fast, an average phone camera just won't cut it anymore. I'm tired of blurry pictures
I've used every Samsung Galaxy flagship until now. Forget Samsung and their Apple-chasing, anti-user policies. I need an SD card dangit!
Some phones take longer to get root than others, but being how this is LG's flagship, and LG has a growing followship, there will be root very soon. Just be patient! This phone kicks butt. I typically root to get easy tethering, ad removal, and bloatware removal, but this phone is damn good out of the box WITHOUT root! get it and don't look back! you won't regret it.
So I've done my reading and I understand sunshine will unlock my bootloader and get me everything I need but it's not really clear to me if root and recovery can be obtained without bootloader unlock and s-off. I've been with Samsung for a while so I'm use to safestrap methods. If anyone can give me clarity on this I'd greatly appreciate it.

I don't see too much action around here. No, for HTC phones, Sunshine is your only choice.
After that, no limits. You can modify stock software with root, or you can download one of many custom roms. Or you can switch around and find what works best for you on a continuing basis. Actually, we are kind of spoiled with this ability to change things up, so I don't take it for granted or feel bad about paying $25 to the people who make it possible. You plain can't do it in newer Apple or Samsung phones.
But S-0ff via Sunshine is the only path to there.

Yeah I've definitely made the decision to make the jump and use sunshine. Side by side the M9 opens apps and multitasks quicker than the S5 by 1-2 seconds. My question really though is if there's anyone working on roms. Seems like the ability to unlock without having expensive hardware is pretty new so is development just now starting or has it reached its peak?

Development is not quite at peak: This Marshmallow version is far and away better than anything on HTC's before now: very fast and smooth. With very little tweaking, it's mighty good.
But another chapter is coming: M9 will get Android Nougat, coming soon. Assuming that it runs nice on the M9, our great devs will likely make more than one nice custom Nougat that will keep the M9 current for at least a year, maybe longer.
I know it's only out for reviewers and what not but I'm looking forward to the device, not only that but I'm looking to upgrade my rooted V20 and wanted to know the chances of the G7 being rooted

Honestly it's a shame I was seriously looking at this phone, but what's more unfortunate is I'm starting to feel rooting is going the way of the dodo, more or less for big brands Samsung and LG for instance. HTC has always been pretty Dev friendly, it's just a shame I stuck with Android all this time because I had the freedom to root and do whatever I wanted and now it's just become a hollow shell of itself
I'd say odds are piratically zero unless you get an unlocked variant, even then it can take months for LG to release the code for unlock. I am looking elsewhere manufacture wise. I have a G3 and it is on its last legs.

For all of you that say HTC is so great, Let me tell you.. I was once a huge LG fan back in the G3 days and V10(Which went knowwhere) and then I said I would never touch another LG again, So I went HTC10,
was great at first, a bit pricey for the money, But to make a long story short. all HTC's battery suck.. your device will die within 1 year. but you will notice the issue way before, like 6 months to less..
when it happen to me, I thought maybe it was just me, then after me, other friends of mine, started having issues, and then friends of theirs had issues, and coming from a Developer on HTC10,
I can tell you, the scene sucks. the users can be rude, even know that is everywhere.. but cant explain unless your a dev, and even know you can s/off which will cost you 25.00, no biggie, lets you rebrand your device too... and unlock your bootloaders, but as for scene, Its not really there.. a few roms and a few things, but nothing big.. I created PureFusionOS originally on a HTC10, and I created Nebula Kernel Originally on a LG G3,
then Ported the first EAS Kernel to HTC10 on MM then N and not on Oreo......... So, dev friendly as it is, it has its draw backs.. I personally wont get another HTC do to the crappy batteries..
If none believe me, click on the Telegram group on my sig and ask in there.. you will see for your self.......
as for the oods of getting root, anything is possible.. look at the v30.. look at the g6 and v20 and so on, Most didnt think that would happen... its a challenge.. I wouldnt say you would get it soon,
but sooner or later.. if you truly want software and dont care about hardware, get OP6........................... But if you want a device that can outperform most others, Samsung,LG and Google.............

Sony phones are locked down tighter than a nuns vagina so I won't go that way again.
I had an htc M9 and the battery was TERRIBLE. 3 hours I was at 60pct of little use, and this was brand new. So the battery issue has to be better than it was then. But most of us buy our phones and never plan to keep then longer than a year Max and most of us also use the payments so the OP6 and others like it are not affordable, especially for my broke ass.
LG makes great phones, they really do, but I want absolute control over something I legally own (for the time being ) and I think everyone else feels the same way. I haven't given up on LG just yet but for time being, I'm using the Motorola z2 force soley cause it can be rooted easily...well I thought easily anyway. Google's seemless update confuses me with two.
That being said, my hopes are still up, hanging by a string for the next LG model, but this time I won't buy it until root is achieved/released..if ever.

I swore to never own another LG phone after the G4 fiasco, but here I am a few years later - literally about to pull the trigger.
I don't care about the notch or the AI features - I just wanted a good phone with: a headphone jack, bigger screen, and most of all - a wide angle lens. I had my heart set out on an ASUS Zenfone 5 for a while but the wide angle camera has apparently been somewhat disappointing.
I currently own a Pixel 2 XL and a Galaxy S8+ Exynos version, both have been a blast to have because of the ease of being able to flash a new ROM and what not. I know for a fact that having this new G7 means losing the ability to customise the phone, but I'm left with little options as my desires for a wide angle lens has become far too great. I could get a secondary lens for my DSLR but snapping pictures very quickly with a phone has become the norm. Oh well, I'm probably going to get the G7, I'm prepared for a locked bootloader

Verizon will never unlock the bootloaders on any phone they sell. Basically, if you want root, the general rule is to not buy Verizon phones 99pct of the time they are not unlockable

I think that law may have been to physically mod phones? I can't quite remember.
But yeah, Verizon = no bootloader unlock, ever. I am hoping T-Mobile's buy one get one free promo will get the phone in more user's hands. More users should lead to more desires for development. The last LG phone I had was the G4 and there was an odd way of getting root on the phone.. I really hope there will be devs to work on the G7. As always, I'm ready to donate money to get root and the ability to flash ROM's.. honestly, I just want AOSP icons on the statusbar :laugh: I hate ugly statusbar icons!

Considering how incredibly slow LG was to add the V30 unlock codes to the official site, and still no OFFICIAL support for the open market V30/V30+ US998 model, I have serious doubts the G7 will be added to the list, at all. If you have a European variant, I envy you. They DO have laws that require companies to allow for modification. The US has pathetic loopholes in right to repair which even Apple and Microsoft scoff at, let along a smaller company like LG. They simply don't care about the dev or modder community. They would much rather have you get a new phone every year because the former was crippled by poor software and lack of support.
I'm rocking a LG G3 vs985 and it is really in bad shape now that thermal issues have led to SD card failure. I might have to reflow the solder to get it working long enough to see if the G7 will get root, or if there are alternatives.

I am currently researching various sites such as XDA now being in the market for a new smartphone out of necessity. That necessity...... Echoing the quoted portion of your previous post...... Is " thanks " to the battery of my HTC 10. I write this with my HTC 10 tethered to a charger because not connected to power once the status bar battery icon shows 70 % it is a very short wait until it bootloops with the only course of action then being a vol. Down + power button combo press to get into download mode...... Select power off...... And connect the HTC 10 back to a power source ( at which point it displays that the 70 % screen on battery power remaining is actually around 8 %.
The HTC 10 battery does indeed suck. Researching now for a new smartphone is leading me to think there are only 2 options that tick the boxes of my wants...... Among those wants being latest hardware with a Good + camera, SD card slot for storage expansion, and ability to be rooted. It appears the 2 smartphones to come the closest to meeting those wants are the LG G7 and Samsung S9 ( and unfortunately it appears presently the want of root may not happen with either of those 2 smartphone options [ Snapdragon versions. ] )
I suppose I could deal with my always-needing-to-be-tethered HTC 10 a little while longer to enter the U12 in the purchase running ( that I presume will be rootable ) but I will be concerned of having another battery nightmare with a HTC smartphone......

I haven't rooted my phones for a few years now. I dont see the necessity for it anymore ( I respect the opinion of others who have their reasons for rooting.. i just have no justifiable reason for myself)
I still use xda a lot for reviews , q&a , discussions etc just not for development.
To me, phones have come a loooooong way from the days of the LG G2x etc where rooting was a MUST if you wanted a phone that could even last the entire day

Among those wants being latest hardware with a Good + camera, SD card slot for storage expansion, and ability to be rooted. It appears the 2 smartphones to come the closest to meeting those wants are the LG G7 and Samsung S9 ( and unfortunately it appears presently the want of root may not happen with either of those 2 smartphone options [ Snapdragon versions. ] )
I suppose I could deal with my always-needing-to-be-tethered HTC 10 a little while longer to enter the U12 in the purchase running ( that I presume will be rootable ) but I will be concerned of having another battery nightmare with a HTC smartphone......

I'm actually in the exact same boat as you - although my battery isn't quite as bad on the HTC 10 yet, it's definitely dying 2 or more times a day on me. It's a great phone and I wouldn't be itching for an upgrade if the battery was still good. I like the U12+ but after this(and previously my One M8) having both battery or charging port related issues, wireless charging on my next device is a must. Unfortunately like you said both the Snapdragon S9+ and the G7 are the only current real options and neither of them seem to be getting any traction in the root department. The s9+ is especially interesting to me because I would think the USA would have a HUGE market for people buying and modifying that phone but it seems as though that just isn't so.
Back to the G7 - this is the first time I've ever even considered an LG and this device looks freaking great, but I want to not only de-bloat and adblock, but also have the ability to run free WiFi tether on Sprint as well as the fun of changing out ROMs(although the older and busier I get the more tedious this becomes).
Eagerly watching from the sidelines on what happens with this phone though!

Not a good thing reading that you had battery related issues on a previous HTC smartphone as well as the 10...... As far as my thought of a U12 being in the running for my next soon-to-be purchase each new day I become increasingly frustrated with needing to be constantly tethered to a power source with my HTC 10. I also have a Google Nexus 10 tablet ( that I believe has HTC battery hardware ) which in the past few months has been major off-and-on issues that after online researching of others experiencing the same thing attribute likely to HTC battery hardware in the Google Nexus 10. Early reviews of the HTC U12 do seem promising...... But after the cost of a flagship phone I do not want to find myself having the same battery nightmare a little over a year from now as I am with this HTC 10.
It is a real shame as so long as I am tethered to a power source my HTC 10 still runs like a champ in every other aspect. Another shame is something you mentioned in root / mod activity on XDA seems to have really declined for most smartphone brands...... And that does not give me hope of there arriving root for either the Samsung S9 or LG G7. If I am destined for the LG G7 I am considering holding out for one of the 2 merchants listed on the LG website to get in stock a carrier unlocked version of it...... In hopes that could make it a little easier / likely for eventual bootloader unlock and root. If not I will just have to get use to it being my first Android smartphone that I did not have root on.
With that scenario in mind I have been researching on alternate methods to try and do as close to some of the basic things I have always utilized with root. One thing you mention is debloat. Searching with a phrasing similar to " remove bloat no root " did return a result from XDA that I likely will try And there do exist adblock, firewall, etc. apps that do not require root...... But my guess is they will not function as well as those with root. I have had a few Samsung, a couple Motorola, and this one HTC ( 10 ) branded smartphones...... A purchase of a G7 would be my first LG as well......

The prior HTC phone (One m8) didn't really have battery issues, but the charging port (microusb) failed on me. I believe this is going to be much less of an issue going forward with USB C connections so I wouldn't really say that's a major concern. I've had HTC phones all the way back to the EVO 4G, and generally did not have issues with battery or power related things. At this point we're going off topic though. Hopefully someone with the talent and ability finds a passion in figuring out root for the G7.

Allllthoooough...... If you and I continue conversing regardless of topic maybe we can bump the thread count up high enough to attract a talented and abled person to take a look here and ultimately detail a root strategy for the LG G7 ( can always hope. )
So on that thought...... How Is the weather where you are ?
