[Q] MMS not working for CM 12.1 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Anyone else having problems sending or receiving with MMS on the nightly builds for CM 12.1? My SMS works just fine.
I have Ting, which may be part of my problem. I am using the same APN settings that use to work for MMS in CyanogenMod 11.

Yep. I've been fighting this for 3 days now. I must have tried every CM 12.1 variant out there with the same result. The APN list shows Ting... but you cannot select it, modify it, or save it. Reset to Default APN doesn't work... Rebooting 18 times doesn't work... flashing the various APN "fixes" like for FreedomPop, MVNO_CDMA, etc doesn't work. But like you... SMS, Phone, and Data (on WiFi) work fine. However, MMS and data (on 3G/4G) don't work.
What has worked... backing off to either a Stock ROM or CM 11. So something in these recent CM 12.1 builds is just broken. The only reason I was trying to upgrade from CM 11 to CM 12.1 was because of that StageFright vulnerability. So I may just go with the Stock ROM until I see the CM 12.1 APN issue for Ting has been resolved.

I've been using the clear google messaging app from the TBO updater app and just installed their latest hangouts to try. They both have been handling mms better than any other messaging apps and sometimes the stock mms will work by just having the gmessenger app installed. I've been rom hopping lately and it seems pretty much the same for me across most CM12.1 based ROMs. Also, you could try editing the actual apns-conf.xml file under /system/etc/ back it up first tho and for permissions 644. from my Virgin Mobile Tri-Band model S3

You should be able to modify Ting by touching the name, even when the button for selecting it is absent. You may need to add "default" to the type once you have it open. I have Ting and I have had to deal with this somewhat as well. I believe I saw some recent Ting APN updates get pushed through as well. Have you tried Exodus?
There is also another thread in here about lollipop and 5.1 which has information that may help.

Exodus? Nope... but I'll be checking it out now!
If you don't mind me asking more about the APN. How many are actually needed in there? If I were to delete all the APNs and just manually setup the 1 needed... is it just the LTE version pointing to http://mms.plspictures.com ... or ... http://mms.sprintpcs.com and making sure the "type" has "default" in it? It's the one thing that I can't understand. Out of every forum I've read... not 1 mentions just blowing all the APNs away and just simply adding a single APN for Ting. I don't think I really need all 8-16 APNs (depending on the ROM you flash).
And this question is open to anyone. Is there any reason you have to have all those APNs for other networks like Boost, FreedomPop, Boost Mobile, etc? What should the APN contents be for just Ting? Inquiring minds want to know.

I actually tried that myself but didn't have any luck with it sticking past reboot or even holding the data signal right. It's possible it might work. I don't know enough about APN's to say for sure. Did you try adding "default" to the beginning of the Ting APN type and then save it?

[Q] HTC Evo 4g Cyanogenmod 7 STOPPED receiving MMS

I know starting new threads is a risky thing here, but I feel my situation is peculiar/unique enough to justify the risk.
I've been running CM7 and using ChompSMS (donated) ever since using Android, many devices ago. This is the first time something like this has ever happened. A couple days ago, my phone stopped downloading MMSs. I can send myself a message (text with a subject) and the notification that the message is waiting for me will come in, but it will not download. I called Sprint and got the code to reprovision the phone, so I downloaded a stock rom and punched it in. The stock rom would download messages just fine. Switching back to CM7 (I tried multiple nightly builds, as well as the most recent stable build), the messages stopped coming in again. I googled all over the place and the best solutions I found was to delete "telephony.db" or to try "APN backup & restore," restoring the APN with settings that worked for somebody else. Every time I restored the APN, it would just remove all the entries. I tried to restore defaults (which brought back a "Sprint" one), reboot, no dice.
The only solution I've gotten to thus far was to download Go SMS Pro, which can download the MMS, after the notification has already come in and I go in to hit download manually. Yes, this gets the job done, but it's just a band-aid over the problem. I'm mostly curious just what exactly caused this, why it persists over every CM install (but not the stock rom), and why I can't seem to find any way to fix it.
A quick update to this, in case anybody has been keeping tabs. This problem spans across multiple roms. I've since installed an MIUI ICS rom, more versions of CM7, a very buggy version of CM9 ported, and another gingerbread rom, all of which kept the problem going. The only rom that works is the most recent rooted stock rom I downloaded. I REALLY don't want to go back to stock if I can help it. Any ideas now? Would flashing new radios help this? If so, I have to be S-OFF to do so, correct?
Thanks for all your help, those that do!
been having the save issue with MMS but I use Handcent not chompSMS, it also wont download using the Roms stock SMS app. it seems to happen on any ASOP rom that I've tried. but any sense based roms seem to work fine. goSMSpro also works for me if I manually hit download (thanks cause that's better than nothing). I have tried to flash new radios, along with flashing CM with a formatted mem car. and nothing seems to work. so If you find a resolution please keep this updated. good luck
I've been having the same problem for the past couple weeks with CM7. I've tried everything the Google suggested, changing the APN, turning off auto-retrieve, disabling MMS with Sprint and re-enabling it after a while, etc., nothing worked. I tried a few different roms too. I can't get MMS to work on any rom unless it's sense based.

Doing this won't cause any other issues? I really want to get this to work because I'm having the same issue on a CM7-based rom.
Sent from my HTC Pyramid using xda app-developers app
It says in the first post, we tried deleting telephony.db
Some of us have tried flashing multiple fresh roms, which I believe would delete telephony.db
Mms won't work unless it's a sense based rom.

I run into the same issue on Deck's Reloaded occasionally. More often than not, though, MMS works. Have never bothered troubleshooting it since it's hardly ever an issue.

Same problem
I'm having the same problem with CM7 on Evo 4G. I can get it to work with sense based rom and goSMS (thank you for posting that, I was about to bail on CM7 completely). Stock messenger and handcent won't work. I saw on another thread someone said it would work until flashing gapps, but I haven't tried that. I even tried backing up APN from a sense rom that would work, and restoring it to CM7, as well as deleting telephony.db, nothing works.
Yeaaahhh MMS can either go 1 of 2 ways. Either you try to get it to work and it works fine, like I just did on my evo, OR *nothing* you do seems to make it work.
I should know, I spent about 6 months earlier this year (on and off) getting MMS to work on my HTC Hero.
With that said, the first step is to make sure you're putting in the right APN info.
Start with deleting /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony*
Next, make sure you have the correct APN info in /system/etc/apns-conf.xml
You'll probably have to either sysrw in android terminal or "adb remount" on pc/mac/linux/whatever to make changes to that file.
This one should work on ICS/JB:
google sprint apns-conf.xml
Should be the last one, searchco.de
Just change the version to 6 if you want to use it on GB.
Reboot to make the system create a new telephony.db from /system/etc/apns-conf.xml
If that doesn't work, you may need more apn changes, framework-res.apk changes, mms.apk changes, etc. etc.
Currently my phone will only download mms that is 200kb or less with either the stock messaging app or handcent. I'm going to try some of the trouble shooting steps on this thread and see if anything works.
If anyone has a fix they know of that fixes this particular problem please let me know.

Its weird cuz when my girlfriend sends me panty pics, it works (she's on an iPhone)
But when my mom sends me pics of my dog, it doesn't let me download. (She has HTC evo 3g)
Im on cm7.2 nightly (newest) w Mason g .15 kernel.
I really don't get why this happens.

My girlfriend is having the same problem as everyone else when it comes to MMS. She has my old Evo 4G running CM 7.1. I wiped the cache and dalvik cache, updated the PRL and profile with a sense ROM, but none of this fixed the problem. I can confirm that Go SMS Pro will download picture mail that neither the standard messaging app or Handcent could (they both gave the error "download of message New Message from SENDER was unsuccessful"). Hopefully a fix can be found soon. BTW, thanks for the tip omegastu!

[FIX?] APN fix for MMS (4.2.2)

Hey all,
I've had mixed results when trying to get an APN that works. I'm running LiquidSmooth RC2 (4.2.2) and have had issues with sending MMS. I've tried both APN files that I have found on XDA for Sprint.
Thread number 1 (post #2):
File name: apns-20120808101544.xml
APN's included: 16 (only Sprint APNs)
Didn't work for me.
Thread number 2:
File name: sprint-mms-fixed-apns.xml
APN's included: 4 (only Sprint APNs)
Didn't work for me.
Neither of these two APN xml files worked for me.
When scouring my SDcard, I found an APN backup file that I had created (from the original filename, I had created it Feb 11th, 2013). I don't remember creating it or ever flashing it before, but I decided to try it out.
File name: Topherk's Fixed APN - 2013-02-11.xml
APN's included: 83 (A whole slew of carriers APNs)
Worked for me.
Now, when I started to look more carefully into the differences between these APNs, I started to get confused (as anyone who is first looking at APN files should!).
When comparing the apns-20120808101544.xml file with my "working file," the Sprint-related APNs were identical. Since I can send MMS on the working file and not the apns-20120808101544.xml file, it leads me to believe that I'm actually sending files through one of the other carrier's APNs. I don't even know if this is possible.
So I guess my "Fix" is working, but I don't really know why. You can try it if you like. Just follow the instructions in the first thread I linked.
Also, last thing, I haven't been able to find this 83-strong APN file anywhere on XDA. If someone has posted it before me, please let me know and I'll give them a proper link (I'm not trying to steal anyone's thunder).
I'm glad this worked for you and I'm not trying to debunk your method entirely I'm just saying this fix along with the other two did not work for me. The only thing that ended up fixing my problem was changing LTE/CDMA/EvDo to CDMA/Evdo auto I ended up restoring my original APN just for safety

No worries. The MMS issue with 4.2.2 is really finicky and different fixes work for different people/phones (that's why I had the ? in the title). I'm glad you got your phone working. Thanks for adding what worked for you, it really helps when people are searching for solutions (hopefully people do searches!).
I'd also like to add that I followed advice in another thread that said to do a clean flash of LiquidSmooth (It was on the LiquidSmooth ROM thread, so I can't say it'll work for your ROM) and it actually worked! MMS is sending just fine and I restored all my data with TIBU, however I skipped the file with the name "Phone/Messaging Sto...25 (SMS/MMS/APN)". So I restored everything with TIBU except that file on the list of applications (it has a green name).

Had just the opposite for a customer's phone. Changed their's from CDMA auto to LTE/GSM/CDMA auto and MMS started working. Thanks for the tip about changing modes.

[FIX] Ting APNs For all Ting Users - 5-12-2014

For all Ting users having issues with mms, sms, and lte using aosp/aokp/cm/eos/pac/pa/bs/modified stock roms.
If you don't know what Ting is or are not a Ting subscriber you do not need this for any reason.
If you are a Ting user you will need the Ting APNs for LTE and MMS.
These Fixes are not phone specific. Should work on all Ting capable Devices.
FOR BEST RESULT: INSERT INTO ROM BEFORE FLASHING!

V8 for 4.3 octhrope lite apn v8
PLEASE POST SUCCESS or FAILURES! (Rom, Radio, APN)
IF THERE ARE ANY TING USERS OUT THERE WITH WORKING MMS ON AOSP ROMS - PLEASE SEND ME YOUR APNS-CONF.XML!!! (/system/etc/)
It would be greatly appreciated!
Big THANKS to bigfdaddy2, tabormeister, VoluntaryMan, and poo706!!!
Thanks to all who have submitted information or data!
REMEMBER! Always Backup Apns before flashing. Flash at your own risk. hopefully this helps others.
I am not affiliated with Ting; other than being a customer, Ting has yet to,(or may never),endorse or acknowledge these apns.
Notes:
[5-20-2014] - Updated 4.4 Apns to smaller format.
[11-1-2013] - Added Lite roms for both v7 and v8. v7 is 4.2 and 4.1, v8 is 4.3.
[10-30-2013] - Did some fiddling with making a universally accepted apn. I usually test everything before I upload it. That being said this is a test version I haven't used yet...
[9-23-2013] - New installer script courtesy of VoluntaryMan. Implemented as hotfix.
[9-20-2013] - Injecting the APNs into the rom before flashing seems to help. In my experience the system lost the apns after the first reboot and flashing them again made them stick.
[9-9-2013] - If its still not working, LGNPST the Teeny Original bin then the Teeny Alt Bin SLB Stack. Do one, the phone restarts; then do the other.
[8-27-2013] I am going to try to assemble a Frankenstein's Monster APN with every Sprint/Ting APN I can find and give that a shot too. So if the lights start to flicker you'll know why...
Unsuccessful so far...
[8-23-2013] update: Pulled the APN Stock files out of the ZVB rom... 3 different apns; looks like US, EU, KR.
ZVB Stock Deodex APNS
[8-23-2013]I'm going to try to pull the APN from a stock rooted phone at some point to compare with the clean, and custom ones. If anyone has one just pm a link. thanks.
[8-7-2013] Also am having some success with reflashing the jb modem. gives me the you've lost data error when im in the bathroom and loose data but not sending multiple sms messages.
[7-12-2013] If you use a Custom User Agent, (messages > settings > custom user agent) dont use iphone as Ting does not support them.
[7-2-2013] Some Ad Blocking programs will block mms. idk why the phones apns are not excluded from the shiz but adding your apns to the white list or removing the app should fix it.
manual fixes
fix 1
Open Voice Dialer, say "Open APN's"
Change all http://mms.sprintpcs.com to http://mms.plspictures.com
Select one of the profiles with the correct MMSC in it.
Reboot
fix 2
Open your root explorer, navigate to /system/etc and find apns-conf.xml
Copy it to another location
Change all instances of http://mms.sprintpcs.com to http://mms.plspictures.com
Copy and paste it back into /system/etc - overwrite old file
Reboot

That's basically the ting APN file above. I didn't have success pulling the apns off of a stock based jb ROM. Maybe if I new the location... I could just adb into it and pull the config file out.
I may be incorrect here, but it feels like there might be another setting somewhere... Like a MMS only setting hanging out.
Also bumped up to 4.3, when doing the open apns trick it shows no apns. Which is strange because I flashed them and the Lte is working.

I've noticed that too, on the GS3 on Ting. I haven't checked if my LTE and picture mail are working, I've just been using stock sprint apns for the last few days.
If you mean the location of the apn-config.xml, it's in /system/etc and one doesn't need to be rooted on stock to read/copy it.

I meant another place where the phone holds apns or settings for apks.
I noticed there is an extra hyphen in all of the stock apns before the <apns. I wonder if it makes a difference.

That's interesting...maybe LG stock reads apns differently for some reason? Oddly just flashed to 4.3 this morning w/BaNkS gapps, wiped cache/dalvik/system, and on boot LTE worked fine. I haven't tested mms yet though

really? i always have to flash a apn list otherwise it wont get lte. I've been testing handcent again today because it has a place to enter custom mms apns... still not sending. Talking with the peeps on IRC, mms is a crap shoot on all aosp roms. they were saying 50% of the time it doesn't work. which makes this job even harder. IDK, maybe there is more to the apn settings than we can see or maybe the stock rom calls home or can access something differently.

I know, it's weird, but both devices I've flashed 4.3 on I wiped system (in twrp, assuming it does a decent job?) and lte worked on boot. I'm actually kind of confused about it, but also not complaining.
Maybe gosms? I've heard it also has custom mms settings. The most curious thing to me is that the phone thinks it's sending mms but they never actually are received by the other end.

No way! Maybe LG stock has apn code baked into the messaging app somehow then? I'm tempted to just download an lg zip and dig around. OR do you think it has something to do with the EFS partitions? Digging around in EFS backups and a stock zip.

im thinking its buried in one of the partitions... but the lg message apk is 3 times the size of the aosp one. could be either. apk would prob be easier to go through.

Started digging around but didn't really know what I was looking for. Here's the manifest from the LGUSMms app and the app itself, if that helps in any way whatsoever?
Would this work for ecomobile? Haven't received any pics and when sent they say pending ...using nexusos rom

it should as long as you can find the apns; then just swap them out.

Cool, send it to me and I'll make a flashable APN zip for you if you want.

CM11 No Mobile Network, Mobile Network State Disconnected

Whenever I flash cm 10.2 cm 11 any rom at all I face the problem of no internet. So I go back to stock. I have my baseband, build # important stuff like that. I always have to take out my assert lines. So when I flash any rom the fine line will say;
;Mount
or something like that I delete all the assert lines and I was told to keep assert lines but just change them to my baseband and stuff. Any help would be appreciated. & btw the problem is it says Mobile State: Disconnected. But I'm in service too.
I have the same problem. Been searching for a while and trying different fixes, but doesn't seem to be working. I'm on ATT galaxy S3, tho. If someone's got a working ATT S3 and let me know exactly what ROM, gapp, modem, etc they used, would much appreciate it.

More info is needed, such as carrier. I'm guessing either Virgin Mobile or Boost if you need to remove asserts on any of the pre-unified builds (this would hold true for any ROM that has switched to d2lte from d2spr). If that is the case, then you don't have the correct APN's configured. Also, it usually doesn't hurt to be running the most current modem (MK3 for Sprint, MK5 for VM/Boost). Again, the more info the better, then people don't have to play Twenty Questions in order to get to the heart of the matter.
This may work...
So, after trying countless options that i found on this site, and after dozens of flashing roms, modems, kernels, booloaders, restores, etc... turns out that i was doing everything right and there was nothing wrong with the install or the phone itself. After contacting my carrier (PTEL Mobile) for the third time, (first time they told me they had an outage, second time they told me to set the APN setting correctly - neither of which was incorrect on my end or the cause), they said they will try RESETting the DATA on their end. And guess what - that worked.
If you think you did everything correctly but still not getting data, i suggest you make your provider to do the same, or at least pry them as much as you can about your problem and what they can do about it. I wasted to much time and effort (my poor phone) on this and the solution was simple, and not my fault. Hope this helps others.

Hiya, I'm currently having the same problem as the OP. Mobile state disconnected but it says I am in service. Using latest version of Philz recovery and I flashed the most recent nightly of the Cyanogenmod 11 -4.4.2 KitKat (April 5th, 2014).Carrier is Virgin Mobile, using Samsung Galaxy SIII SPH-L710. PRL is most recent one 33030 and modem is MK5. I did however, flash the rom without deleting the assert lines, since I did not know I had to delete some assert lines. Any help with this? Thanks.

Deleting asserts is only for d2spr specific builds, that doesn't apply to d2lte builds (hence the reference to "pre-unified builds" in my first post). Your issue is most likely also related to APN's. However, there are also known data issues on a lot of the latest CM nightlies, and also on the ROM's that rely heavily on CM as a code source. I would strongly recommend reading the last several pages of the thread for any ROM that falls into this category in order to see what other users are reporting along these lines.
CM11 No Mobile Network
Hey guys,
Noob here. I'm running CM11-20140428-NIGHTLY-jflte on a Galaxy S4 GT-i9507(international, optus) but bootscreen now says 9505(not sure if that's important).
I've had Mobile Network State: Disconnected for the last three nightlies. On CM11 M3 it was working all good, but now no luck.
So I've tried a few things and I've come to the point where I'm going to try the factory reset then reflash CM11 and fingers crossed it will work.
Can anyone talk me through the proper procedure for this? I've made a full backup on my external SD using CWM 6.0.4.7 and transferred it to
computer just in case. So would anyone be awesome enough to take me through it step by step.
Cheers,
hhmmm

Just Fixed Permissions using Rom Manager, still no good.
Stock no APN settings at all
I have looked everywhere and found nothing for the last 3 weeks. I have a stock, sprint S3 on straight talk (my son's phone) it will not get 4g lte data what so ever. My phone is the exact same phone, and it does get 4g lte data. I tried all the basics ##72786# data on off check airplane mode...nothing. Mobile network state is "disconnected". So I opened data ##3282# to compare apn settings with my phone. I made sure everything matched, and when I get to "LTE APN Settings" I open it up, and nothing is there except APNs nothing, blank. Also missing is "Dial Up Networking" that option does not exist on my son's phone. He updated to kitkat (uggh) but the problem was present before that. Checked the phone, and it is not rooted. Funny thing is the phone updates with 4g lte running after dialing ##72786#, but that goes away after it completes. Texting works, but no mms (pictures etc.) and if I set it to cdma only it gets 3g, otherwise no data at all. Anybody?

[Q] no data/apn on 4.3

I have the t989 telus phone running aokp_herculese_jb-mr2_milestone1 with the baseband t989dtlmc4 and for whatever reason there are no apn settings. any time i try to add an apn it will not save. when i insert the sim card (it's my friends phone, so she has another phone kept her sim) it's the same deal - no data, no apn and last night when i tested it wouldn't send text messages or anything else.
I have tried flashing multiple radios, but it doesn't appear to have worked. i've combed through these threads and really can't find a solution so i'm hoping it's something simple i missed.
Thanks!
First, the first radio you had was the one you need. No older radios work anymore. Unless you're on ICS.
And try editing an APN that's there already, I stead of creating a new one. And save. That worked for me in the past. Make sure you edit every line in it to match the settings you should have.
