Can someone confirm I am not going mad?? - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been very disappointed with the video recording on the m9. M7 was great. M8 was fine bit not quite as good as the M7 but the m9 is terrible. Exposure changes from shadow to sun are far too extreme and change far too easily and seems far too unstable. Detail isn't as clear too.
I found that dropping the contrast by a notch has improved things a bit though.
Anyway, the thing that's puzzling me is that I noticed something today. When you switch from normal 1080p to 60fps it seems a much wider angle on the video and the detail is better. It's as if normal 1080p is zoomed in a bit, which I suppose, would account for loss of detail. I'm not too technically minded but surely this shouldn't be the case.
Can any of you lovely people check that theirs does the same and I'm not going mad?
Thanks in advance.

What ROM are you running? What firmware do you have? On 1.32 the camera was a bit crap with over exposure but since the 1.40 update its been improved.
You can edit settings to get the most out of the sensor which in all fairness is superb once you've edited the settings.

The 720p video recording ...

How good is it?
Anyone has a sample 720p video file that was created using HTC Desire?
Thanks.
I am curious too... anyone got a sample?

It sucs, upscaled video, low fps
Not impressed by it at all. Seems worse than my previous N95.

The image is crisp, but the fps is too low. I'm hoping it will get better when we get the official 2.2 update, but for now 480p is what you want to use
well, i don't know. i took one a few days ago (i forget which rom now) and the 720p one was relatively ok (low fps - 20 ish according to mpc-hc), but no tearing.
old vids i took on stock 480p was a tear fest on movement and unusable. as i've mentioned before though, i'd rather have a higher fps recorded with 480p. would make for a far smoother playback experience
ehh not impressed
I don't know, for my part I'm surely very impressed and happy with it.

Here is an example of the 720p video.... You will have to change the youtube setting to 720p to see the full quallity. Notice how jumpy it is.. like someone else said my old N95 was better.

Yes, all 720p recorded looks CRAP. I'm just hoping the official 2.2 is improved or optimized. No offense to the chefs, but I have seen some aspects of pre release roms not living up to the official versions. i.e. seen some slow sluggish unstable hero 2.1 roms. the offical one is 100% perfect.
we know the hardware of the Desire whould easily be able to handle 720 recording so lets wait and see.
glad its not just me.
yes sharp picture when not moving but what use is that
no one has released a video of official 720p recording, leaked roms mean nothing so we're just going to have to wait.
I previously had recorded choppy videos. Installed mcr, replaced my sd card with my new class 6 one and it went away.

Video recording on the Desire suffers drastically due to the lack of any stabilization. Extremely shaky unless you have it mounted perfectly still. I hope the final Desire release has some improvements over the leaked in this regard.
YouTube re-encoded vids are kinda pointless to judge quality from. Here's an original someone had shot a while back before they had higher bitrate recording available: http://db.tt/v7oVpw

Replace camera app on CM7?

Is there another market camera app or something else to replace the one on CM7? I cant shut off the camera click noise and there is no tap to focus and a few other things.
I for one would like to have the HTC camera app on CM7, but I doubt it will happen due to the possible framework differences.
I was looking for exactly the same thing. Installed CM7RC2, and the only thing I've found lacking was the camera app, which just doesn't come close to the one on the stock HTC rom.
I've just tried out Camera360, and been looking at reviews for Camera ZOOM FX, but both seem to be focused on applying a wide range of effects rather than improving the actual process of taking a photo. To my knowledge, neither had tap-to-focus.
Anyone know of a different app that might do the job a little better?
You can try the MIUI Camera app. The only problem is it doesn't have the ffc, but it's so much better than the stock CM7 one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=984279
I'm trying to figure out how to install the MIUI one and keep the stock one (to use the ffc when I need to).
I use vignette.. Set the resolution to 8M and superfine quality.. Man, that thing takes a photo at 4mb.. Really good image quality.. Definitely first choice..

Second vote for Vignette; costs a couple of pounds and is well worth the price. A ton of brilliant effects, and the image quality without effects is outstanding. I don't think I've used the HTC camera app once since I got this.

[Q] What's the problem with the damn camera focus?

I finally went on a trip this past weekend and tested the camera extensively. I took lots of 20MP pictures and 1080p videos, all of them outside. The camera keeps losing focus and has a very hard time finding it again. What's the problem? Is there a way to lock the focus or at least adjust it manually? Here is a video I recorded:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M33DArbxBcc&feature=youtu.be
This is really frustrating. At least 1/3 of the pictures I take come out blurry and out of focus, which is weird. I've taken pictures out of a moving car and many of them came out perfectly focused. Some of the other pictures I took without moving at all came out blurry. Videos are almost without exception guaranteed to go in and out of focus. I expected this phone to do better than that and am hoping it's a simple problem that can be solved. What has your experience been? How can you solve this?
P.S. I am using RomAur v1.2.
I have the same problem with stock rom. Focus is really bad. I hope they fix it in an update.
Same problem here with stock rom
Any updates on this issue? (here's another thread with no answers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703714)
I took some videos last week and I'm having exactly the same issues using rooted stock 4.4.4. The problem is even worse, if you are filming at night.

Your concern may be right. I didn't do many video testing in 4.4.4 so I can't confirm but I've also a feeling the focus is even slightly worse than 4.4.2 and quality is downed a bit too. The video is not sharp as and detailed because the denoise algorithm is stronger in 4.4.4.
True video lover might better stick with 4.4.2 but for most people they just won't notice it. But 4.4.4 is real improved photo so I think most guys will just go for 4.4.4.
Indeed, video is never real good on mobile, it is not Digital Video Recorder or DSLRs. HTC, Samsung and LG theirs video focus are not good too.
Strange...
I just tested it with my phone (rarely take any videos) and I had no problems with the focus. Even on quick change from near to far it adjusts quickly and does not lose focus.
I have the 4.4.4 stock camera installed.

hmmm.... in my post, I was talking only about video. Photo on the other hand already got improved focus in 4.4.4.
Testing camera indeed could be a very difficult and professional job because in every situation may got various results. You have no problem don't really meant others won't have it because we are in a completely different testing environment.
It won't everytime can't focus or all times can't do from near to far or else the camera is total defective and Sony will receive many complaint. The problem is our camera is always semi-break or buggy, it works but not that easy to predictable or unstable and works perfectly like a DSLRs because they got a much better software. The problem can be only happened in some specific environment.

[Q] Camera sucks on M8 GPe

There's no way around it, the camera on my M8 GPe sucks. I even had to switch to my old Nexus 4 just now to get a picture that was decent. This was mainly due to the Nexus 4 lighting the flash while focusing which the M8 GPe doesn't. Not sure why, they should work the same...
But I believe the overall quality was better on the few pictures I took while I was on stock. So is this possible to fix? With a new camera app maybe?

Can't say I much disagree with you here. The One GPe is pretty damn nice except for the camera. The Sense version of the camera that I played with in the store was better. My problem is that the flash doesn't seem to illuminate subjects at all, particularly if you need to take a photo of a business card or wine label in a darker room. As a result, I've been using VSCO much more often (which I generally used only for 'artistic' subjects. Sorry I don't have a better solution for you.
Google should force the manufacturers to give out all apps included in the stock versions through Google Play and make them available to the GPe versions...
I hope Android Silver will be the solution for this problem.
Stock Google camera sucks donkey balls. Excuse me for my choice of words but it's true and we all know it. A big weakness of any GPE phone or Nexus phones for that matter.

That's actually the point. I'm not taking pro shots by any means and it's still not usable pictures. Last time I couldn't get the focus right since it doesn't flash the LED during focus. I'm not sure why anyone would accept blurry pictures no matter what they were supposed to be for.
Phones of the same price gets better pictures and cheaper phones with stock Android gets better pictures. And when HTC makes a big deal about "ultrapixels" we are entitled to complain.

I actually made direct comparison phots between a GPE Camera and the Sense camera and the pictures were pretty much identical. The photos only seem a lot better in sense camera because the viewfinder shows better pictures. If you actually take them and look at them in the gallery, they are pretty much identical.

My personal opinion is that it's harder to get a good picture with GPe. Slower shutter, harder to focus etc. If everything gets right I assume both versions are able to make equally good pictures since it's the same hardware.

LG G4 Camera and OIS performace

Hi,
I have read the reviews of LG G4 camera and particularly OIS videos comparison. I came across the jerky videos issue with LG G4 OIS. Also checked this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/lg-g4-bad-ois-t3103334)
I Want to know that does G4 really has some issue with OIS? How's the videos quality with OIS?
If you're walking it's very bad, if you stay steady it helps, so don't walk while recording...
No problems here, recordings seem pretty smooth on both 1080P and 4K while walking
Not sure what's up on his end.
Yup, no problem here too, everything is superb
If you walk like you don't care it will be bad as it tries to compensate too much movement. I walk while filming but try to dump the move with my feet a bit flexed and it works ok for me
Sent from my H815 using Tapatalk
OIS in video sucks anyway, it makes the pictures distorted
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acUEAUx4WJI
Edit : the G4's OIS instead of helping stabilize video it even adds some jerky, stoopid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7YomVQb4Vo
The best for pictures, but the worst for video.
Can confirm that the OIS is not good while walking, strange movement that does not look good.
OIS in such a small device is not a 3000$ shoulder mounted gimbal rig, so having jerky video while moving is normal. Plus it is a sign, that it is working.
If you want to disable OIS while shooting a video just get ProShot (you can also disable noise reduction).
Great app. You actually disable it even while shooting the video, really cool feature. Works only in the app.

Of course, but the 6s + OIS works way better while walking.
Hi Everyone,
Thanks a lot for your opinions.
Actually I was comparing the OIS quality of G4 with other phones and I was wandering that why this phone results in lots of jerks while other (like S6) don't. The reviews I have seen on youtube were uploaded back in 2015 and I was thinking that if this OIS issue is a software issue then it should have been fixed by now.
So that's why I just wanted to get the real opinion that is it really an issue (a hardware one) or has it been fixed now (if it was a software bug)? Or if its still the same then can we say that S6 OIS produces much better stable videos then G4?

They lied or they have new LG G4's special new brand..., or they don't know how to watch a video, I told the OIS helps a lot if you tried to stay steady like for taking a pictures, even if you shoot a video but keep steady, but once you make a little big movement faster it starts to be very bad, the OIS move so much that it adds some distortion which make the video so much more jerky than phone which does not have OIS, so the LG G4's OIS is very bad while walking...
I think sample videos would help more, both from those who are claiming that its good and from those who are saying that its not.

Well I have seen some mix response on this. Some videos are good and some are not. So may be there is an issue with particular models or firmware version.
Which model are you using and what is the firmware/OS version?
