All,
I was wondering if there was a way to back up your Galaxy S3 applications and settings? I have been pretty happy with my CM10 build, but new ones of course always come out. Every time I flash and update the ROM, I have to manually install my Google play apps because I do not want all the apps i have downloaded back on my phone. Also, I did not know if i could backup like Nova/message settings and apply the backup every time I flash a new ROM? Thanks, let me know!

ok so when u full wipe your phone and all that good stuff and you also backed up already flash your rom! then go back to the nandriod you just made and choose to restore data... BOOM! all your data/apps/messaging is still there!!
If your tooo lazy to do that use titanium backup search it on the playstore!
Is a nandroid backup through Clockwork or any app that I need to download? It does not make sense if I backup my current ROM and restore its data. Where can I find this? Sorry I am new to this!

The system (as in operating system) files are stored in the /system directory, this includes apps that are packaged with whatever ROM you are flashing. The /data directory is only user installed apps and their data, either from the market or other sources. I simply use titanium backup on a daily schedule backup my apps and also manually export my sms messages before a wipe. I also keep a copy of the titanium apk on my sd so i can copy it over to the the new ROM after flashing but before rebooting using a recovery based file manager. This way i can full wipe, flash, reboot, restore backups from titanium and be back to where i left off in under 10 minutes. It is also wise to keep a recent full nandroid backup just incase anything goes wrong during the process.
Thanks for respoding! Where do I go to make a nandroid backup? Titanium backup might be my best bet!

From your recovery.
Is there a way to copy the .apk over to my sdcard or do i have to download a file somewhere on the internet?

If you are speaking of an app that is already installed on your phone then you can simply copy the .apk from the /data/app folder, unless it is a system app then it would be in /system/app.

jst do what i said above k so when u full wipe your phone and all that good stuff and you also backed up already flash your rom! then go back to the nandriod you just made and choose to restore data... BOOM! all your data/apps/messaging is still there!!
When it restores DATA it restores data from apps/games/ whatever data you have i always do this and i have all my messages and games still in my new rom
You have to install clock work mod recovery. To boot into cwm, hold volume up + power + home button as you are powering on your phone.
From there, go to backup and restore > backup. This should create a full backup of your data (settings etc.) but not things on your sdcard like music or pictures. To restore after flashing, go to cwm recovery > backup and restore > advanced restore > select your backup you made > /data
On another note, what's the difference between wiping (/data, /system /cache) > flashing rom > advanced restore /data and just flashing the new rom on top of old rom? Does the new rom not delete/overwrite the old ROMs files? Also, can you just wipe /system /cache and flash new rom? Sorry for hijacking thread. Lol..
I am going to install AOSP R5 Jelly Bean 4.2 JOP40C + Kernel v3.0.51 Linaro on my phone. i will be coming from 4.12 and doing a Titanium backup of the apps. I know now that data gets moved to the sdcard/0 folder. After initial setup how would I go about restoring all the apps. Would it just be a case of moving the bacup folder to the root of the sd card and then would it be seen by TB?
Thanks
Basically you need to first backup on Titanium (which you did already). then format and flash the new rom. The files will still be on the storage partition. So now in the new rom open play store and download the app titanium backup again, and choose batch restore. it will install the apps from yoru backup one by one. Also make sure you have check in security to install 3rd party apps.
This method only works if your current 4.12 is already bootloader unlocked. if you are unlocking bootloader for the first time it erases your storage. in that case i dont know what to do
Thanks for the quick reply,I am on unlocked bootloader so all should be fine after I flash.
Cheers

Right now Titanium Backup doesn't work on 4.2, so you might want to wait until the devs update it.

Hi,
I'm trying to restore a nandroid backup I did with TWRP 2.3.3.0 but I'm not being successful and it's bothering me because now I have an unstable system and didn't really wanted to reinstall everything from scratch...
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong but after restoring the backup and rebooting the phone, I can boot but MOST of my apps are not "installed". Shortcuts I had on the home screen are there with their respective icons, I click on them and I get "Applications is not installed". I also get a notification saying that phone storage is running low, and it is hitting the 2GB limit, but it never was like this before, I had lots of of free space for apps. Looking at the nandroid backup, it seems I have data.ext4.win000 and data.ext4.win001 both with around 1.5GB, which goes above the 2GB limit. Not sure if this means anything...
Why isn't this backup working and what can I do to attempt to solve it?
Any other info I can give you so you can better try and help me, just let me know what you need to know...

not sure if your recovery is corrupt, maybe worth making a titanium backup of apps and system data, flashing a new rom and then restoring via titanium?

It's your fault cuz the app data is not being restored , 1stly when you made the backup with TWPR you should've selected to backup the CACHE , you skipped that step since by default TWPR skips that step = no apps data anymore, tho there are shortcuts and in manage all apps you can see those apps installed but with grey collor like when being removed from lets say rom cleaner , theres still the APP IMAGE but not the app it'self , you could try this:
1. Flash old recovery ( the one you used to make the back up 2.3 or which ever you used ) . full wipe , restore nand backup ( don't forget to flash the boot.img in the bootloader if you used different kernel in that time or flash the modules via recovery for the kernel you use atm )
after you boot up re-download those apps that are there with shortcuts but not apps itself and hope for the saves from those apps to be there.
Next time if you don't wanna risk it you titanium back up and save the apps that matter to you , when restoring them back : download the app , go to titanium and restore only the DATA.
or simply check in TWPR when making nand backup to save the CACHE as well in the backup.
Yeah, I know it was my fault... I was at work doing other stuff at the same time and didn't focus on what I was actually doing with my phone and I messed up. I was used to an old recovery on my old phone where a nandroid backup would backup everything needed and didn't really look at the partition options.
I'm doing exactly what you mentioned and so far seems to be working. All the data seems to be there, I just have to reinstall all the apps...
One thing though, since the nandroid restore process didn't work correctly, I was left with a full /data partition and my phone started reporting "low storage" and didn't allow me to do install anything. I looked into the /data partition and found out that the folder lost+found was filling up the partition, I erased everything in it and restored 1.2Gb of free space. I can now install all my apps.
Thank you all.

Make sure you make no changes in the folder structure and folder naming. It has to be exact the same as it was.......and when you want to restore a nandroid you always flash the boot.img and recovery.img from the nandroid and then do the rest of the procedure

After upgrading to Lollipop FOB6 firmware using full odin and then rooting and installing TWRP, I have never been able to successfully restore a backup, ever!
From reading the dev forums it seems no one else has been able to do so either. Does anyone know what the heck is going on? Is there any toggle (like compression?) that we cant use?
This is a bit of a pain but not the end of the world. Certainly makes me hesitate to mess around with new roms though if I cant go back to my solid daily without having to start from scratch.

I think what is going on is that the directory structure in Lollipop is a little different from the one in Kitkat. To give you an example, the user installed applications in Kitkat are placed under /data/app like this:
/data/app/com.my.application.apk
But in lollipop the same app is installed as:
/dats/app/com.my.application.apk/base.apk
So a backup taken from your data partition in Kitkat cannot be readily restored in Lollipop. The directory structure is just wrong and nothing works. The solution is for someone to ether write a conversion script or for the TWRP people to incorporate such a script in their future releases.

Thats true - I did read about that. And that would definitely explain being unable to restore a kitkat rom.
However, I cant even restore a lollipop backup after flashing a different lollipop rom! Even if they are both derived from the same FOB6 base! That is what is even more confusing. Try it - backup, wipe all the partitions except int and ext sd of course and then try to restore... it just doesnt work!
Way I dit it just use factory reset only don't wipe anything specialy internal storage and don't use format. While restoring TWRP formats partition that been restored. I'm using TWRP 2.7.2.0
I've had no problem restoring from a TWRP Backup on Lollipop numerous times.

One of the devs, who runs the Lollipop ROM I've been using, warned against restoring data. He suggested backing up apps + data through Titanium Backup instead. Maybe it depends on the ROM?

Hi
I have a rooted S4 running Carbon. Im using TWRP 2.8.5.0 and can backup and restore any
KK rom with no issues. I can flash Lollipop and backup but it will not restore this backup.
Its says restore successful but then just boots back into recovery. If someone could resolve
this it would be great
Hello all,
TB doesn't seem to pick up the apk file when backing up which is quite frustrating. Does anyone have a solution?
i had backup using TWRP 2.8.7.0 my stock TW lollipop rom...Now i had flashed Dirty Unicorns v9.5...If i wanted to goto stock rom that nandroid backup wont work??? thats what people are complaining over here??
Since rooted phones can't take OTA's, we have special considerations before updating. (flash/wipe/then recover ... ). Google restores a lot but I've discovered not many system or app settings. TWRP makes full backups, but if your data is full of pics and videos there's not enough available space for backups.
I have Titanium Backup Pro but I'm not sure 'when' to use it for recovery. Individual app restores sure, but what about a complete restore? After a flash and boot, should I bypass the Google setups, install TiB, and restore with that? Will that give me a 100% restored device (all system and app settings)?
Will this work? Is there a better strategy? Or is it impossible to get 100% recovery.
Insight/ Advice are appreciated.

From my limited understanding ... no! Any boot, recovery, or system mods cause OTAs to fail when trying to apply. Getting AP working is a different issue.
since i'm not comfortable using command line programs i find myself using NRT when an update is due. in the end it's just a graphical frontend with some instructions but it makes me feel more secure.
enough rambling, your question is answered in one of the FAQs in wugs homepage:
http://www.wugfresh.com/faqs/how-to-update-ota-not-working/ said:
If you use Titanium Backup it is recommended to only backup user apps + data (not system apps), because when you update to the new android version, the system apps are most likely updated, so restoring an old system app backup will overwrite your new system app with the legacy version; and if you were just to restore the data, it may be incompatible with the new version of the system app. There are some exceptions to this rule; as in – you might be able to get away with restoring some system data, however if you chose to go this route then make sure you just restore the data (not the app), you do so selectively (as in – one system app at a time), and you know how to delete that app data if it doesn’t work properly (Settings > Apps > All > navigate to the particular app > clear data > reboot your device.)

Thanks for the valuable info. It appears a full restore (all system settings) is impossible after an upgrade/update. Maybe restoring app data with a TiBackup is possible, but I'm still confused about the 'when' to do this - after the Google restore? Bypass the Google restore?
I recently moved away from Apple where their update/upgrade restore was almost 100%. Maybe some day Google will follow and this will be a moot point.

google is certainly impoving on that part, it's only a matter of time until this kind of backup is fully implemented.
if you took a look at the link, you may have realised that at least with option 1 you would not have to go through the setup/restore process again.
in my case, i usually go for the restore option given, as it restores some of the system settings in a compatible way, which TiBa can not as already said.
another option, to carry over all of your settings to the update is to:
make a full backup with TiBa
unroot/reflash your current build (if you are using NRT choose 'no wipe mode' similar to the description in the FAQ. this way you don't have to restore anything and can ignore the next step.)
restore your full backup without fear of compatibility issues(never mind, can't restore system settings without root. stupid me.)
take OTA or trigger the update otherwise
in this case it would of course be pretty much useless to restore the google backup.

I checked out Option #1 and the rest of NRT for that matter. In fact I have NRT installed. What is does mostly depends upon stock and I have Pure Nexus. In addition, it's a toolkit. Toolkits isolate users from an "understanding" of the process. However, it's the understanding that is necessary to have a fully integrated backup/restore process and to respond to issues/problems that may arise. Bottom line, I don't use toolkits.

ok then, i thought your switch to android was very recent and therefore you had very little experience. indeed toolkits are in the way of a learning curve when it comes to android.
to my knowledge the closest thing you can get to a full backup/restore process for manual updates is to use the google backup to restore the system settings and use TiBa to restore your own (user)apps and data (possibly overwriting the apps google may have tried to restore/-install). with pure nexus afaik being very close to stock using the tag to not wipe user data should in theory still work without causing problems.

Insight/ Advice are appreciated.

Just follow #10 from Heisenberg's rooting guide & your apps/data stay intact.

That's the easy part! Restoring app settings and all of system settings is the hard part

As long as you follow the guide and don't wipe your phone, then there's no need to restore your apps/settings. They should still be there on your phone. The only thing you have to restore is TWRP/root.

If a flash update is performed, do you still restore TWRP/root? I would think not as it would overwrite the newly flashed update and likely make the system unstable in the least or unbootable at the worst!

If you are rooted, your phone will not take an OTA update. So you have two options....flash the new factory image or wait for somebody to upload a flashable update zip. The easiest way is to just download and flash the new factory image. If you follow the guide, you are also flashing stock recovery. So, you have to re-flash TWRP and root. Your data/apps stay intact.

Thanks for you input, but after all this, at the least many system settings are lost even after Google does it's full restore. I know, I've done it many times. I'm looking for a process/strategy that restores system settings (and all data settings) after an upgrade.

Im very confused by this whole thread you have unlocked bootloader rooted phone running twrp and wondering how to stay up to date with latest google factory images?
You dont have to backup your phone to install the factory images and you can flash the new one over the current one. You can simply download the latest factory image from google and manually flash the files from fastboot or use the flashall.bat. just make sure to edit the flash allscript so it doesn't flash userdata or recovery as the flashing of userdata will delete your user data)
Flash the following from the factory image. Dont flash recovery or userdata (recovery will over write twrp and userdata will wipe your data partition.
Boot.img
Cache.img
System.img
Vendor.img
Radio.img
Then boot into recovery and reinstall su.

No. Please re-read post #1.
I want to restore all system and app settings AFTER a flash update. It is possible to retain many (most) app settings if the internal storage is not wiped, but this does not apply to system settings.

Updates modify the system partition of the phone i have found that using titanium backup to restore system apps has always caused issues for me as the files have been modified by the update and you are then overwriting the update with settings from a previous version this can make settings copied incorrectly or cause issues with new features that have been implemented to the system partition. Personally I think it could create more issues than it solves is there a specific setting or thing you are trying to preserve?
