How to enable RW on SD Card on Lollipop? Galaxy tab s 8.4 WiFi
On kitkat i would root it and instal sd fix, but on lollipop i dont know how.
thx,
Same as kitkat.
I thought lollipop had the sd card problem already fixed, That was the only reason i was going to upgrade, but i rooted kitkat and use the sd card fix, so no lollipop for me.

Only for compatible apps that have that permission included. If the developer doesn't include it, the app won't get write permission.
I did not know that thanks.

Hi all,
Thanks for taking the time to read my thread. This morning I updated to kit Kat and now I just opened sygic. It says sd card access denied. So I searched it up and it turns out that I need to root my phone to change some settings as kit Kat prevents writing to the SD card I think. Is there a way without rooting my phone?
Even if need to root my phone, does rooting void my warranty? And can I get future updates via Ota /Sony pc companion?
This is really urgent because I need to use sygic over the weekend. (Stupid mobilicity doesn't have coverage in Waterloo!)
Thank you!

Rooting might Void your warranty also depends upon the method you use to root. yes you can get future updates as long as you are in stock rom OTA or PCC.
I see only two possibilities: root or install sygic to internal storage. There is might also third possibility for you, it works with iGo navigation, put sygic to internal storage and maps to SD card.
Thanks for the replies.
If I install sygic to my phone's storage, it doesn't need root right? And my phone is running out of space. Any recommendations for a app to sd app?
Thanks!

HTC's file manager should be able to access and write things to your external sd card. Since the changes to how sd cards are handled in kitkat, Third party apps can only have write access over the folders that they create. So unless you root thats just the way it is.

What data do you want to write or what is it exactly that you are trying to do? Just to get an idea if there is a non-root solution.
I previously used ES file explorer on my rooted Galaxy S4 without a problem, but it wouldnt work properly on my non-rooted M8. Using the stock HT file manager app and so far its fine for what I want to do.

So, I stupidly upgraded my tablet to KitKat a while back and now my SD card is rendered useless. I don't want to root because I don't want it to be a brick, so what should I do now?
I bought a 16GB tablet because my plan was to save everything on my SD card....

Hi,
You don't say which model you own ??
If it is a SM-P605 you can root it with TowelRoot without problem nor risk.
Once rooted you can install SDFix from Google Play to recover the use of your external SD.

Kit-Kat has restricted the access to the External SD to Read-Only for the external app's.
The system App's can still write on it.
This can changed with the above mentionned app but it needs root.

Yes but we need to know which model: Wifi only (SM-P600) or Wifi + 3G (SM-P601) or Wifi +LTE (SM-P605)
Only the P605 can be rooted without tripping Knox.
If you dont want to root Just save your files to internal memory and move them to wherever you want on the external sd card using the stock my files app. Its not just the note. Every android tablet that runs KitKat has the same behavior.

Google/Android decided they didn't want you to write there in the new versions. However, there is a work around.
Here is one of the free apps that will change settings to allow you to write to the SD card:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix
There are others. But, I think that all require you to be rooted.

Just for a lark, try Googling: KitKat SD Card.
I think you will find the change happened in ALL stock versions of KitKat It was an intentional change. However, almost all custom/modified ROMs turned this "feature" off as soon as they could.

Still saves them to Storage/extSdCard/DCMI/Camera on my SD card in my AT&T S4. So must be a T-Mobile thing.

Interesting, since I just searched on the S4 AT&T forum, and there are plenty of posts about it. Here's one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687513

I see that. They must not have it set in Camera settings SD Card.
Hey folks! I'm currently running JasmineRom 7.0, and I was wondering if there is any way to re-enable the "Format as Internal" feature that stock MM gives for sdcards? I read that Samsung disabled this feature on their ROMs. I also read that this option can be re-enabled by editing a line in /Data/System/rc.xxxxxxxx (can't remember the config file name) for the LG G3. Is it also possible to enable it for us rooted Note 4 users? Has anyone on here done this?

I don't know if this will work or not.

If you try, I strongly suggest doing a full nandroid backup first.

Hey, thanks! I'll try this one of these days when I'm feeling a bit daring. My 32gb sdcard is only a class 4 I didn't even realize they made them that slow anymore. Time for a newer card I suppose. Probably best to have the fastest card possible before using this feature.

That's the downside of using adoptable storage. The fastest SD cards aren't nearly as fast as the memory in the phone.
