Returning phone - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well 30 minutes into having this phone, I have issues. The phone will go to sleep but won't fully wake back up. I have too long press the power button to power down then reboot to use the phone again. So I'm sending this thing back, I hope my replacement is at least useable. Has anyone else had this problem? I've googled it, and it looks like I'm the only one. I will say when the phone is useable, I love it!

I did not have that problem. I had to send in for repair. My phone on Sim slot 1 would not lock my Sim card in so it could slip out and I would loss signal. Something to look at.

Thats usually caused by an app you installed misbehaving and causing the phone to experience a SOD (Sleep of Death). Sometimes running a logcat just before putting it to sleep will point out clues to which app it is.

See and I thought that too.. so I did a factory reset, and without any third party apps it does the same thing. I even tried turning it to performance mode in the power saver app, thinking that was the problem, to no avail. It still does the sleep of death. They said they would over night me a phone, but can't because they are upgrading their systems right now..lol just my luck

Isn't this the same thing as a factory reset going through the android back up and reset menu?

I must say thank you Asus for following these threads and giving support.

OK I've done the hardware reset about 10 times now and still the phone does the same thing ;-(

Apologize for the delayed response. Have you tried using ZenMotion to see if it will wake from sleep? - Double tapping screen to wake up device & lock screen. By double tapping the screen, you can
1. Wake up the phone: When the phone is in sleep mode, tap the screen twice to wake up the phone.
2. Lock screen: When the phone is on the page of desktop, tap the screen twice to lock the screen.
Please see our FAQ for how to enable this option: http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011264/

[Q] HTC EVO top lock/wake up button not registering all the time.

I have had my Htc Evo rooted for a long time now. This problem recently just started and I'm not sure if it's because my phone is rooted or maybe it's just an electrical or hardware problem. The top right button to lock the phone or to wake it up from sleep doesn't register all the time. I sometimes have to push it several times for it to work. Do you think I should restore my phone? Maybe it's because it's rooted? Something got corrupted? I'm leaning more towards hardware problems..
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Are you just having trouble waking the phone up with the power button, or is it all functions of the power button are acting weird? Does it put the phone to sleep fine? I've had it happen a few times, where the phone wouldn't wake up by pushing that button. That was attributed to the ROM i was using at the time, and also having the min clock setting at 128.
If your case is different, and the button isn't working properly for all of it's functiopns, and not just waking up the phone, it could be a hardware issue, or the button mechanism could be hanging up or something.

All the functions of the power button is acting weird..sometimes I have to push the button like 10 times for it to wake up so I can unlock my phone. Sometimes I have to push it 5 times or more to turn it off. It's weird though how this randomly started doing this. I was hoping it was the Rom. I'm running Fresh I've never had any problems with it. That's why I leaned more towards the hardware. Is there any way to go around pushing the power button to wake up the phone? Do you think I should restore my phone to see if it maybe fixes the problem?
Thanks!

If it was me, I would make a nand backup of your current setup, and then try flashing a different rom, and seeing if the problem persists. If it continues, I'd then unroot and return to stock setup. If it happens on stock setup, I'd then take it to Sprint to have it looked at.

Alright, I'll do that. Thanks

Power BUtton Problems with Waking etc.
Not sure if you ever resolved your issue, but I have the EVO 3D, NOT rooted but with the latest updates, and ever since the last OTA update that moved me to software level 2.08.651.2, I have had issues with the phone not waking on an inbound call until I hit the power button and then wait about 8 seconds for the screen to come on. I have Factory Restored it 3 times, which seems to fix the problem temporarily, but it always comes back.
I just did a warranty replacement claim to see if that will finally resolve the issue. I even found a post where someone said the stock batteries are somewhat loose, so I took a business card and taped it to the bottom of the battery, opposite of the charging posts so that the fit would be better, still no luck.

Lock screen gone

Usually after pressing the power button the pink lock screen from tmobile would show up. But today after pressing the button to unlock the phone theres no lock screen, it just goes straight to the homescreeen. I tried putting a password and it still doesnt bring up the lock screen. Has this happened to anyone else?

This is still an issue after a restart?
that would have been normal on CM7 if you disabled lock screen
but on TW... it's rather unusual, specially when we still have no root
can you try installing super user meanwhile you are at it?

Also, theres another problem. When I hold the power button the phone shuts off automatically instead of the menu asking you want to turn of the phone.

This definitely sounds like a faulty phone, I would return it. These options are normally present in a CM7 build like allgamer said.
I don't think that it is a faulty phone. Watch the review by Mobile Syrup and the lock screen on their phone is gone to.
mine is doing the same no lock screen and phone shuts off as soon as I hold the power button
Edit: just tried setting a lock screen with pin and nothing still hmmm

If and when I get this phone you'll have about 9 lockscreens to choose from and a variety of power options (as well as a ton of other mods and hacks).
Just click on a few of the links in my sig.

how do you do a factory reset?
What will a factory reset erase? Will i have to root again?
This is my problem, I have been using my sim card for like 6 years now and today it just stopped working in my phone..
So I took it out and put it back in , still doesnt work, and right after that happend I realized that my lock screen had ceased functioning which i read is a known issue.
So i lost all my contacts, i will go have to get a new sim tomorrow, still don't know if i should trade the phone is for a new one.
this problem had something to do with the *#0*# command, and and testing the camera while in that menu. i just reflashed the deodexed rom and it was fine.
I had this problem too. I had to do a factory reset to fix the problem.
Here's another thread discussing a potential cause of the issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18702063&postcount=12
There are programs out there to use until then. Right now I'm using Quick Boot and it seems to do the trick just fine.

I'm rooted and used Titanium Backup, and a few other "safe" apps. Then suddenly my screen lock dissapeared. Battery pulls would not restore it and neither would any settings fiddling. When I held the power button down two seconds, it would shut the phone off instead of the usual popup that gives you the option to power down.
The only way I was able to restore it was reset the phone to factory settings. Then I restored via a CW backup (wow CW is awesome)
Anyway is this a common thing? I can't imagine this happening to an iPhone. What could cause this--do I have to erase my phone next time this happens? What a PITA!!!
Did you try the numeric combo which gets you into the phone diagnostics? If so we discovered that the megacam test hoses the lockscreen for some reason.

[Q] My home button has stopped working completely (help!)

When I plugged out the charger this morning and turned off the wifi my phone suddenly crashed and started to reboot. I put the phone in my pocket and didn't think much about it seeing as this is a very common problem for a lot of people and it usually happens to me once or twice a week.
One hour or so later I pick up the phone to check something on the web and then press the home button to get me back to the home screen. Nothing happens. I press it again. Nothing happens. I have to then press the back button a bunch of times in order to get back to the homescreen...
After testing this a bit more I realize that this behavior doesn't go away, it's permanent, the button just doesn't work any more, which in itself is odd for a software button... Not only that but my lockscreen is gone as well even though it's set to "drag" in the settings and the "minimalistic text" widget on my homescreen sometimes have trouble loading up...
Rebooting the phone does not help.
Does anyone know how to fix this or even know why this has happened?
(ps. the phone is a swedish yakjuxw)

Nope, the device is stock.
I saw a dutch user on a dutch forum with the same issue. a Factory reset solved this for him... Not sure what caused it and it's a bummer if it happens to you but at least it worked for him.
Try using an app that puts your device in landscape mode and see if it works then ans when you switch back to portrait.

Thanks for the replies, but I did a factory reset and it solved the problem.
Had a similar issue when i just got the phone, systemui kept crashing and when i'd reboot none of the soft keys worked - had to wipe and factory reset as well!
Damn. This happened to me too, just spent forever getting stuff on my phone.
Well it looks like I'll be factory resetting...

Phone not locked sometimes??? Anyone else

I have had it happen a few times.
One i remember that i put the phone to charge overnight and i plug it in and went to take a shower. I didn't pressed the power button just left it to time out. The next morning i hit home and swipe to put my pin and unlock but it just took me to the home screen without having to input a pin.
I have had it happen a few other times that i put it out of my pocket and i try to get on the phone and it just go to the home screen it didn't ask me for my pin.
I hope you guys understand what i mean, and maybe someone has experience the same thing.
Thank you.

Phone is completely stock, both software and hardware.
ATT sugested a master reset. I have yet to do it.
The issue has not come back for at least a week now. Now that i think about it, i think after the 4.1.2 update i have not notice it.
Do you happen to have an app installed that will let you view what state the cpu is in? Like cpu spy. (ex: deep sleep)
Maybe the phone isn't going to sleep.. Something could be keeping it awake, making the android system think that the phone is still in use.
Do you have the option checked for screen lock delay? -- the one that keeps the phone from locking within a certain amount of time after the screen has turned off.
I see you said it hasn't happened for a while.. but if it does happen again, maybe you can try to see if you have a wake clock by viewing the cpu state.
Just a thought

Sleep of death issues

I have had sleep of death issues infrequently with the Note 3 in the past. I have been having to do a battery pull every month or so. Of late , the issue seems to have become worse. I have had three battery pulls in the last 2 weeks. It has happened both while the phone was charging and also while not charging. I'm thinking long of doing a factory reset.
Any thoughts or ideas before I go do the factory reset?
Edit- I am on the stock rom.

A lot of times this will be caused by an app not working correctly. You can test this theory by booting your phone to "Safe Mode" and let it stay in that mode for a while. Before booting to "Safe Mode" check your running apps and make a note of them. If you do this and it resolves the issue, you'll need to track down the app that's causing it. Remove the latest apps that you've installed one by one until you find the culprit.
To boot "Safe Mode" turn off the phone normally. Now hold the power button to boot the phone, and while holding it, continue tapping the left menu key continuously until you get to the Lock screen. You should now be in "Safe Mode"
If you do this and the problem continues, try clearing the cache partition with recovery.
To boot recovery, turn off the phone normally. Now hold volume up, home, and power together until you see the Samsung logo. It will tell you it's booting to recovery in the upper left hand corner.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the response. I went ahead and did a factory reset. I'll try your method if I run into issues again.

I am still not sure what sleep of death means, I see people complaining that the display doesnt turn on but the soft keys illuminate. In My case nothing works it looks like a phone with dead battery and to make it work I have to pull the battery. Today I had another weird issue. I sent a message using FB and the screen froze I was able to turn of the display using power button but unable to restart it. Again another battery pull to fix it. So can some one please explain what exactly is a sleep of death.
Thanks

A factory reset is always the quickest way to resolve issues. I just learn how to do this stuff so I can help out when people have problems. And if you're like me at all, completely setting things back up is very annoying, especially when you do as much testing and flashing the number of ROM's that I do.

A lot of times the "sleep of death" is caused by what's known as a kernel panic. It's when the kernel isn't functioning right and won't let certain aspects of the Android OS function properly, that being the part that tells the hardware keys what to do, or something that affects things in other parts of the OS. But kernel panics can be caused by a rouge app like I explained, or even a bad OTA update. It's just like a computer will have a brain fart at random times for unexplained reasons.
Thanks for explaining all The info. would a Kernel Panic cause the hardware buttons also not to respond. I have hardware buttons also failing to respond and that leads me to beleive it is a HW issue.
Thanks!

Yes a kernel panic can cause anything not to respond. The OS determines what to do when a hard or soft key is pressed, even the power button. With the kernel ultimately controlling all of that, it could be the problem. It also very well could be an actual hardware issue though. The only way to tell for sure is do a full wipe and factory reset. And if that doesn't work, use Odin to flash a complete stock image. If either of those procedures fixes the problem, then it was a software issue, whether that be an app or the OS itself. I will be back on here in just a little bit if you need any guidance in doing any of that.
