Any way to tether (hotspot) for free with VZW G4? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am soon going to upgrade from my Galaxy S3 and I am leaning towards the G4 over the S6 because of the removable battery and expandable storage but my most important "must" is to be able to wirelessly tether (hotspot) for free.
I currently have a rooted S3 with Verizon and tether every day no problem but is there ANY way to tether with a non-rooted (since it hasn't been achieved yet) Verizon-variant G4? (Data is not an issue I am grandfathered into unlimited data with Verizon)

PDAnet+

Have you confirmed this works on a Verizon G4?

No, you need root to hide tethering usage

From my experience with unlimited data they prevent the tethering unless you root. I was set on paying full price for my G4 but I only use about 8gb a month. When I went into the store my account had a special plan available. 20GB of data on the edge plan for 100.00 a month. They called it a loyalty plan and it wasn't available online when I look at my account. Plus I get a 21 percent discount through my employer. So I caved and gave up my unlimited. Tether works by default but for thr first time ever i had to setup the data warning settings.

There are 3rd party apps that work. The dedault tether app is just a verizon app that tries to upsell an addon charge.
We use them at work on verizon. I haven't tested my g4 yet but sure its fine. Worked on my g2.

FoxFi works great for me.

I'd double check, from what I understand, being a loyalty plan, this 20 gb /$100 is not eligible for employee liable discounts as you mentioned.

My bill shows the plan alone is 79 dollars. So discount is applied.

Also from what I've learned over the last two weeks dealing with Verizon every time you talk to someone new you get a different answer no matter the question.
I ordered on 06/01. Fedex damaged my order on 06/03 the day of delivery. Phones were redirected back to Verizon before delivery. I've had over 6 different chats online and went to the store three times in between to just buy in the store because when I called customer service they said i could. Store couldn't do anything because they had not cleared thr first purchase from my account. I was about ready to cancel altogether and settle for T-Mobile crappy coverage in my area.

And recovery... You will need to flash a tethering exploit.

I'm confused. I can just it on in my phones ui. Is this a limitation for users with unlimited data?

On my G2 before rooting (with unlimited data) I could turn on tether and was greeted with a message stating something about a plan change is required. Rooting and a flashing a mod fixed that check from never happening. Now that I'm the edge plan, tether is included with the plan. I tried it last night and it works.

First post, but been reading / using these forums for years. I have an unlimited plan on Verizon, and can CONFIRM that FoxFi does indeed work (I bought the 7(?) dollar licence ages ago) on the LG G4. I was worried about this too when initially moving from my G2. Again, I can confirm that FoxFi bypasses the Verizon provisioning (the prompt to get you to upgrade to a tethering plan) and allows wireless tether with a user set SSID and password. I've used something like 150GB this month already (it's my sole source of internet).

Yes. Those of us on unlimited data rely on third party apps or rooting our phones to continue using hotspot.

You mean you bought the $7 full version of FoxFi? What does that grant over the free version? And you can definitely confirm that you have the G4, on Verizon, unrooted, with unlimited data, and can successfully use FoxFi as much as you want and Verizon isn't aware and isn't charging any extra fees at all?

I believe the free version has a data cap, which is why I bought the full version a couple years ago. Absolutely confirmed. No root, full stock Verizon variant. I see no additional charges. Using 150+ GB a month. On unlimited

Thank you Harken, you may have just given me a green light to get the G4 before root is achieved
EDIT: Harken, you have had no problems with speed or dropouts using FoxFi have you? What about multiple devices connected?

I used FoxFi free to tether from my Verizon G4 this afternoon, worked great. Since it was free I had to toggle it off and on a couple day due to the usage limitation.

Doesn't really matter if they do or not. Just download the .apk and install it if you want it.
I knew it was a matter of time and of course, Sprint has already been discussing the issue. The part I don't like, is about the cell provider auto adding the plan to your monthly bill when they catch you tethering, which I don't see how they can do if CarrierIQ is removed. Unless they drive around neighborhoods in a van, connecting tether frequencies to your address. Lol

As long as the apps are still in the market, you can just get a modded market to see and download the apps.

yeah i am currently using stock. I was using midnight but he stopped development so i went to stock for a little bit. I think that we should be able to use our data in anyway we want to. But the carriers see tethering as a gold mine. I say as a compromise how about this data plans....
plan 1: tethering allowed but speed capped at 1megabit...
plan 2: unlimited Thehering Allowed and unlimited data and only $15 more per month speed capped at 3megabit
plan 3: super data plan same as plan 2 but has full wimax speeds and is free if you get the $99 unlimited everything plan.

How about unlimited data plan still means unlimited data? I am already paying an extra $10 a month for.....? I wasn't paying that with the Palm Pre or Instinct. All could get on the web. The only reason I tether is to see the damn websites and use a grown up keyboard. Should not have to pay another $30 a month for that.

The extra $10 is not because of the data at all. The charge is because you have a "smart phone". This would be like when you purchase a car and the state says you have to pay a gas guzzler tax because your car only get 25mpg and not 35mpg. What sprint should do is whay verizon is doing with the $50 prepaid unlimited plan for features phone. Sprint says feature phones prices per month is this and for smart phones they are this....
on the plus side id you are a sprint shareholder then this may help the bottom line by finding ways to charge more for the same services. I think next sprint will increase the fee for tables to $20 as it is an uber device with a screen larger then 4". They can also charge $15 for any smart phone with a 4" or larger screen. And if you phone has a battery that is not environmentally recycled then sprint can also charge you $10 per month for that...

HaHa! Yes if you have a larger screen you must be using larger data. Their first explanation for the $10 was the higher data use with this super phone. Now they just stumble when you call them on that and say it is for having a premium phone....I paid that cost when I bought the phone. It is more like buying a sports car outright and still having to pay the dealer a monthly fee for it being a sports car.
Do you BONSAI?

Does $20, 5gb Android Preferred Plan Have Hotspot?

Hi I was wondering with the people with the Andriod Preferred Data plan (5 gb for $20 a month). If you guys have hotspot included..I hear some people say that they do but I had it awhile back and remember that it wasnt I'm currently paying 30 for 5gb and tethering which you cant get anymore so just wondering thanks
It used to have hotspot but T-Mobile changed it and took it away and made it a separate plan. If you want hotspot, just download FoxFi from Google Play store. Its free wireless hotspot and you dont need to be rooted to use it.

Do you have the $35 5gb plan or the $20 Preferred Android plan? The current $35 5gb plan includes hotspot. The $20 plan does not. I had the $35 plan for a few days because I got my phone at Best Buy Mobile which doesn't have access to grandfathered items. Wifi tethering worked. A few days later I called to get my $20 Preferred Android plan and lost wifi tethering once they switched it.
Confirmed this is how it works.

Foxfi doesnt show up in market for me on ATT, However verizon did get slapped by the FCC for blocking tethering apps because a deal they had with the FCC for the portion of networks they use, so maybe ATT will copy them since the two compainies copy eachother all the time anyway.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/31/...ettles-with-fcc-for-1/?a_dgi=aolshare_twitter
I personally don't tether. But i know a lot of people that do, some pay for the service from att, some don't. if att is forced to cease blocking tether apps it would almost guarantee a severe enforcement of their policy on"illegal"tethering.
I also wanted to use Foxfi before I rooted, but I couldn't find it in the market. I'm now rooted, so I used the CWM " Tether and Cell Standby Fix" from the MODs section from this thread. It works fine, but I'd be nice if there was a home screen shortcut to enable/disable it quickly.
Hate to go off topic, but in my Captivate I use MarketAccess to emulate the T-Mobile market. This allow me to install Foxfi directly from the Android market from my rooted AT&T Captivate. I can not get MarketAccess to emulate the T-Mobile Market on the SGS3. Is there a replacement or fix for MarketAccess or a hack to emulate the T-Mobile Market from an AT&T SGS3?
So if i use foxfi att wont charge me for tethering right?
I have unlimited data on virgin in Canada but my plan does not include tethering and they charge a high rate per mb for tether usage, if i installed a custom rom that enabled tethering would they charge me? they dont when i use apps like clockworkmod tether
Recent at&t customer here, pardon my ignorance...but I'm on the 5gb plan and I thought that it included tethering? Is this not true for all the plans? Seems to me if you pay for 2gb 5gb or a million GB you should be able to use it however you please......
The 5gb plan on ATT does not include tethering unless you pay for it which is an extra $40/month last I checked. If you use tethering apps with ATT and you dont pay for the plan they will send you a test and email stating if you dont stop that they will add the tethering plan to your account automatically.
They are quick on catching you now too. Last time I tethered I used about 200mb of data and I got the email, took a week or so after to get it and yes they can detect you. There are ways to not be detected but they usually can.
About the guy saying you should be able to use it how you want is so true. Verizon just lost a class action lawsuit over this and now have to allow tether apps (which are not illegal) because we should beable to use our data and apps anyway we want without our carrier telling us how. We did buy our devices and pay for the service.
So maybe now other carriers will back off so they dont get sued. Because it was a nice chunk of change Verizon had to let go.

Unless they've changed their policy in the last two weeks the AT&T 5GB plan does NOT include tethering. I'm a ex-AT&T IT employee with their now defunct unlimited data plan still in effect as they cannot pull it from me. On my old old rooted and ROM'd Samsung Captivate i'd tether constantly without issue. Since I got the Galaxy S3 (a month ago & still stock) I tried it two weeks ago and the message came up telling me to call AT&T. I called and was told it's a $50 add-on data plan for hotspotting. Hell with that, FoxFi it is, let them tell me I can't do it. it's my data plan and it's unlimited no matter how I use it.

Can I tether ATT without rooting?

Is there any way to enable tethering (without tethering plan) on an ATT S3 without rooting?

If you are on AT&T's new mobile data share plans (or if you switch to it) then yes, you can tether for free and it will count against whatever data plan you chose (or choose) with mobile share. I switched my phones over on Thursday. I have a S3, and an iPhone 4s. We went with the 6 gig plan. All plans come with unlimited talk and text to any number, as well as wireless hotspot and tethering (wifi and USB), with no additional setup fees.
Both my phones share the 6 gigs and those gigs can be used however I choose.

... you DO know that tethering on an unlimited plan also runs the risk of being FORCED onto a different plan, correct?
AT&T seems to be REALLY good at knowing when your tethering. I never had the "unlimited" plan on AT&T to begin with (but realistically, it really isnt unlimited anymore anyways), so I was very happy to see the new mobile share plans that allow me to use my tethering as part of the data I'm already paying them for every month.

I used to tether on my old phone (iPhone) with ATT and one day I got a text saying basically to stop tethering or they would put me into a capped data plan. I continued tethering until I got another text saying they were moving me into a data plan. I called ATT and was polite and played dumb, the girl said she would remove that "flag" from my account since I called. I stopped tethering at that point. Now I just want to see if it can be done on my S3, I will prolly just go with a data plan at some point and tether properly with ATT
How do they monitor that?

Easy. Tethering forces additional hop. Also data usage when on another tethered device has different characteristics vs. data usage on the device.

I declined it, and then she said for being a "loyal customer" she can give me 2.5gb of Hotspot for the same price that I pay now with unlimited data.. so instead of me getting the half a gig of Hotspot data every month, I now get 2.5gigs.. and my bill stay the same..
I'm not sure if anyone else knew this or not.. so if not.. yall should call and see if you can get it also..

Unlimited data includes 2.5Gbps normally now, nothing special. It is part of the plan.
Lol I bet they put you on the plan where you'll get that, but get throttled after your data hits a certain point, still unlimited, but slow.

Have you migrated yet? If not I have a feeling you just got locked into 2 more years on your contract.

Jk I can't stay sitting on a phone for 8-10 hrs a day dealing with people. Did collections for 2 years and that was torture.

I got the unlimited without throttling and also have the 2.5GB hotspot which was only 500MB before. I think they changed all plans now to have the 2.5GB hotspot.

They don't automatically do it but if you change your phone or plan, it changes to this.

Which again leads me to the question of whether he has migrated already or not? I believe thats the only way he's getting the free hotspot and if he didnt pay a fee they got him on another 2 year contract.
Hopefully thats not the case cause id like to get free hotspot as well until I get force migrated eventually. Unfortunately, im almost sure that's the case.

There is no contract with T-Mobile. The only time you're under "contract" is until your phone is paid off. If you already paid your phone off or brought it to them there's no "contract". It is their new plan and you have to sign up for it if you were an existing customer.

Not true. They offered me to switch to another classic plan. The ones with the 2.5gb, 4.5gb, 6.5g etc plans. No migration fee, came with hotspot, AND another 2 year commitment.
So YES, people can still sign contracts, I know, it doesn't make sense to me either.
They wanted to do the same thing to me when I got my Note 3, but I'm on the actually unlimited data plan and didn't want to give that up. I don't usually use too much data but when I need it I need it.

T-Mobile still has fully unlimited plans. They are actually cheaper now, and come with 2.5GB of hotspot usage. If anyone here wants to know anything about the plans and what changes and what doesn't let me know. I work in a corporate retail location, so if anyone has any questions I would be more than happy to answer or find the answer.

Not true, the only way you can still get a T-Mobile contract is if you opt into it as a small business customer, or if you go through an authorized dealer like Walmart, which I don't even think Walmart does. If you are in a contract when you upgrade, you are only required to finish out your existing contract. If you are paying your phone off with an EIP (Equipment Installment Plan) you are only required to pay off the existing balance of the phone (if applicable) if you decide to leave.
In store we use the 2.5gb of free hotspot as a selling point, you get it regardless provided you move to the Simple Choice (Post-Paid) plans from any of the older plans, and have either 2.5gb or fully UNL plan.

Wrong. You can still extend with a classic plan. No migration fee but another 2 year commitment.
When I was in the store getting my Note they checked my plan and the sales associate did mention that my current plan was still cheaper than what they were offering. I don't use that many minutes so I don't need the extra minutes. I was on the 2.5gb plan that throttles speeds after that and when my wife joined my plan we switched to the Unlimited high speed plan with 1000 shared minutes almost 2 years ago. So a similar current plan is $120 before taxes and fees for my wife and myself. Not bad in comparison to other providers but still not as good and the only benefit is extra minutes we won't use and 2.5gb of tether which I rarely use as it is. We pay right under $100 a month right now
Nope, Uh Uh, Nada

Show me something that says you're on a contract! You can't because there are no contracts!
So she wanted to you to pay an extra $10 for something everyone was getting free? LMAO!

Chiming in with the 3rd not true. You can get individual classic contract plans at Costco. No need for small business/corporate accounts.
