Hi I was wondering with the people with the Andriod Preferred Data plan (5 gb for $20 a month). If you guys have hotspot included..I hear some people say that they do but I had it awhile back and remember that it wasnt I'm currently paying 30 for 5gb and tethering which you cant get anymore so just wondering thanks
It used to have hotspot but T-Mobile changed it and took it away and made it a separate plan. If you want hotspot, just download FoxFi from Google Play store. Its free wireless hotspot and you dont need to be rooted to use it.

It will turn on, but a computer (at least a windows PC) can't connect to the network it creates.
Yeah..just got off the phone and switched it to the 20 preferred plan the 1st rep told me it was included when I called in again to add it to another line the 2nd rep told me the line already had it and that hotspot wasnt included..
So yeah looks like i'll be looking for a work around thanks tho guys!
Will give fox fi a shot, I have a bluetooth dongle for my laptop so should work one way or another hopefully!

Do you have the $35 5gb plan or the $20 Preferred Android plan? The current $35 5gb plan includes hotspot. The $20 plan does not. I had the $35 plan for a few days because I got my phone at Best Buy Mobile which doesn't have access to grandfathered items. Wifi tethering worked. A few days later I called to get my $20 Preferred Android plan and lost wifi tethering once they switched it.
Confirmed this is how it works.

BIG RED (Verizon) and BIG BLUE (ATT) are now banning tethering apps from the android market. Will they also ban it from the amazon market also? And will Sprint follow the leader?
Doesn't really matter if they do or not. Just download the .apk and install it if you want it.
I knew it was a matter of time and of course, Sprint has already been discussing the issue. The part I don't like, is about the cell provider auto adding the plan to your monthly bill when they catch you tethering, which I don't see how they can do if CarrierIQ is removed. Unless they drive around neighborhoods in a van, connecting tether frequencies to your address. Lol

yeah i am currently using stock. I was using midnight but he stopped development so i went to stock for a little bit. I think that we should be able to use our data in anyway we want to. But the carriers see tethering as a gold mine. I say as a compromise how about this data plans....
plan 1: tethering allowed but speed capped at 1megabit...
plan 2: unlimited Thehering Allowed and unlimited data and only $15 more per month speed capped at 3megabit
plan 3: super data plan same as plan 2 but has full wimax speeds and is free if you get the $99 unlimited everything plan.

How about unlimited data plan still means unlimited data? I am already paying an extra $10 a month for.....? I wasn't paying that with the Palm Pre or Instinct. All could get on the web. The only reason I tether is to see the damn websites and use a grown up keyboard. Should not have to pay another $30 a month for that.

The extra $10 is not because of the data at all. The charge is because you have a "smart phone". This would be like when you purchase a car and the state says you have to pay a gas guzzler tax because your car only get 25mpg and not 35mpg. What sprint should do is whay verizon is doing with the $50 prepaid unlimited plan for features phone. Sprint says feature phones prices per month is this and for smart phones they are this....
on the plus side id you are a sprint shareholder then this may help the bottom line by finding ways to charge more for the same services. I think next sprint will increase the fee for tables to $20 as it is an uber device with a screen larger then 4". They can also charge $15 for any smart phone with a 4" or larger screen. And if you phone has a battery that is not environmentally recycled then sprint can also charge you $10 per month for that...

HaHa! Yes if you have a larger screen you must be using larger data. Their first explanation for the $10 was the higher data use with this super phone. Now they just stumble when you call them on that and say it is for having a premium phone....I paid that cost when I bought the phone. It is more like buying a sports car outright and still having to pay the dealer a monthly fee for it being a sports car.

Wireless Tether for Root Users (hereinafter WTFRU) was the holy grail of free apps while I was on my rooted droid incredible. I routinely ran every piece of tech off my phone FLAWLESSLY (xbox live, PC, and touchpad)
Today I picked up a VZW Galaxy Nexus and root as soon as I got home. Much to my dismay, WTFRU didn't work (2.0.7). Tried the 3.1 Betas and even the experimental and it's no dice.
The closest I can get to running it is on 3.1-beta7 and selecting the Galaxy SII in device profiles. Tethering fails to start due to one error in the log, which reads: Activating WiFi interface.....FAILED"

That is helpful. I can justify $24 a month ( with my discount ) knowing that I will be getting unlimited tethering. I'll keep an eye out on the rooted apps before I make the plunge though.
Hoping that there will be a kernel released soon with both wired and wifi tether baked in. I use my Droid, not all the time, but if home or work internet goes down I wire tether. Wifi tether is great on trips to let my tablet get signal to watch Netflix or what not.
I have faith that it will easily get done.

Foxfi doesnt show up in market for me on ATT, However verizon did get slapped by the FCC for blocking tethering apps because a deal they had with the FCC for the portion of networks they use, so maybe ATT will copy them since the two compainies copy eachother all the time anyway.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/31/...ettles-with-fcc-for-1/?a_dgi=aolshare_twitter
I personally don't tether. But i know a lot of people that do, some pay for the service from att, some don't. if att is forced to cease blocking tether apps it would almost guarantee a severe enforcement of their policy on"illegal"tethering.
I also wanted to use Foxfi before I rooted, but I couldn't find it in the market. I'm now rooted, so I used the CWM " Tether and Cell Standby Fix" from the MODs section from this thread. It works fine, but I'd be nice if there was a home screen shortcut to enable/disable it quickly.
Hate to go off topic, but in my Captivate I use MarketAccess to emulate the T-Mobile market. This allow me to install Foxfi directly from the Android market from my rooted AT&T Captivate. I can not get MarketAccess to emulate the T-Mobile Market on the SGS3. Is there a replacement or fix for MarketAccess or a hack to emulate the T-Mobile Market from an AT&T SGS3?
So if i use foxfi att wont charge me for tethering right?
I have unlimited data on virgin in Canada but my plan does not include tethering and they charge a high rate per mb for tether usage, if i installed a custom rom that enabled tethering would they charge me? they dont when i use apps like clockworkmod tether
Recent at&t customer here, pardon my ignorance...but I'm on the 5gb plan and I thought that it included tethering? Is this not true for all the plans? Seems to me if you pay for 2gb 5gb or a million GB you should be able to use it however you please......
The 5gb plan on ATT does not include tethering unless you pay for it which is an extra $40/month last I checked. If you use tethering apps with ATT and you dont pay for the plan they will send you a test and email stating if you dont stop that they will add the tethering plan to your account automatically.
They are quick on catching you now too. Last time I tethered I used about 200mb of data and I got the email, took a week or so after to get it and yes they can detect you. There are ways to not be detected but they usually can.
About the guy saying you should be able to use it how you want is so true. Verizon just lost a class action lawsuit over this and now have to allow tether apps (which are not illegal) because we should beable to use our data and apps anyway we want without our carrier telling us how. We did buy our devices and pay for the service.
So maybe now other carriers will back off so they dont get sued. Because it was a nice chunk of change Verizon had to let go.

Unless they've changed their policy in the last two weeks the AT&T 5GB plan does NOT include tethering. I'm a ex-AT&T IT employee with their now defunct unlimited data plan still in effect as they cannot pull it from me. On my old old rooted and ROM'd Samsung Captivate i'd tether constantly without issue. Since I got the Galaxy S3 (a month ago & still stock) I tried it two weeks ago and the message came up telling me to call AT&T. I called and was told it's a $50 add-on data plan for hotspotting. Hell with that, FoxFi it is, let them tell me I can't do it. it's my data plan and it's unlimited no matter how I use it.

If you are on AT&T's new mobile data share plans (or if you switch to it) then yes, you can tether for free and it will count against whatever data plan you chose (or choose) with mobile share. I switched my phones over on Thursday. I have a S3, and an iPhone 4s. We went with the 6 gig plan. All plans come with unlimited talk and text to any number, as well as wireless hotspot and tethering (wifi and USB), with no additional setup fees.
Both my phones share the 6 gigs and those gigs can be used however I choose.

AT&T seems to be REALLY good at knowing when your tethering. I never had the "unlimited" plan on AT&T to begin with (but realistically, it really isnt unlimited anymore anyways), so I was very happy to see the new mobile share plans that allow me to use my tethering as part of the data I'm already paying them for every month.

I used to tether on my old phone (iPhone) with ATT and one day I got a text saying basically to stop tethering or they would put me into a capped data plan. I continued tethering until I got another text saying they were moving me into a data plan. I called ATT and was polite and played dumb, the girl said she would remove that "flag" from my account since I called. I stopped tethering at that point. Now I just want to see if it can be done on my S3, I will prolly just go with a data plan at some point and tether properly with ATT

I don't think this is an an issue with Verizon. I believe this is the FoxFi VPN servers are down. This happened a few months ago, and the next day it started working again.
Hope you are right. Time will tell.
It's 8:36PM Pacific Time - 11/20/2015 - Foxfi not working on Verizon Galaxy s5. Did yours start working again?
Booo. I'd rather get beat in the face with a sack full of pissed off kittens than go without my foxfi....I was one of the retards that got a note 4...and bog5 is not my friend.
Do any of you know how to use FoxFi via USB mode or Bluetooth mode to connect PS3, granted that'll be a fix till we all figure out what the deal is.
Note 4, Verizon with Unlimited Data Fox Fi not working for me as of I think today (last time I ran it was a week ago). Bummed, bout to take a road trip with the kids for Thanksgiving and no wifi. What's going on?
I just tried to fire up FoxFi for the first time in a few days and I can't get it to work, either. Also on Verizon with an Unlimited Data Plan. Am I screwed?
Looking around the XDA community, it looks like Foxfi is no longer an option. Without root we are done with free wifi tethering for now. I hope Foxfi can come up with a work around. I am using usb tethering and Pdanet until someone beats this block.
Why is it just to much to pay the $30 for the hot spot? Thats a total of $79 a month for unlimited high speed data, check the cable and phone companies prices they are moving away from unlimited to tiered packages, comcast wants the same amount of money for 150 gigs a month, last month eac of my 5 lines used that apiece.
Foxfi just started working! Hope it continues.
Foxfi has been killed by our carrier Verizon. I believe I have found a work around and need testers. Currently I'm running foxfi on my Verizon OG5, none rooted with unlimited data Plan.

Edit: I heard that foxfi is working again? please confirm!
FoxFi also started working for me, again, around last Wednesday or so. Been working fine ever since. I'm on the road and have been using it as my hotspot for tablet and laptop almost 24/7 since then. No problems.
