Battery jumping from 90% to 100% and smoothly going down - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to all.
As the thread title states, I'm having this annoyance with my Tab S (SM-700).
If I charge it while on, it while charge to slightly above 90% (might be 91% or 92%) and if I watch again a few seconds after It will say "100% charging".
When using it after unplugging, it will smoothly go down (I mean it doesn't jump back to 80, 60 or wathever).
I havent't experiences any hangs, reboots, crashes, or any other thing that may lead me to think about hardware malfunction.
I did a factory reset (Both via Lollipop UI and Recovery) and it didn't help.
If I let the battery go down a little, turn off the device and charge it while it's off the it will normaly charge to 100% wihtout jumping.
I've already tried discharging completely, then fully charge while it's off but this issue reapear.
The device is not rooted yet.
Anyone experiencing something similar or any suggestion?
Thanks in advance!
PS: Sorry for my english!

Try the calibrate guide in the link below, since you are not rooted, follow the version for non-rooted phones/tablets.

I have the same exact issue on my T800! When it charges up to 92%, it jumps to 100% within a few seconds. Now when the device is fully off, it charges fine with no jumps. Yet my device discharges fine in which is an calibration issue when the device is on since charging it when its off has no problems.
I've came to the conclusion of waiting 10-20 minutes to ensure its charged to 100% accuratly. I tried calibrating it and everything and it comes back somehow

I tried something similar wih no results (just let the battery die and fully charge when device off, thern turn it on and charge it till full again). But your suggestion it's quite different.
Do you think I it might be hardware related?
I'm worried cause the device is 3 weeks old and I can't return it (but it's still under Samsung warranty). Not having had any issues related to reboots, freezes or anything make me think it might be a software issue, but I'm just guessing.

I'm glad to hear I'm not alone with this...
Are you running non rooted Stock LP 5.0.2?
When I bought it I upgraded to LP at first boot and didn't have a chance to test it with Kit Kat.
I didn't do the complete first discharge and fully charge for 6 or 10 hours while off as I read it's not necessary for Li-Ion batteries... Now I'm wondering if I should have done that!

You dont need to do an 6 or 10 hours charge, once it`s full, it`s full
I found the information about battery charge level jumps, it` a bit long.

I had the same issue on 4.4.2 after OTA update to 5.0.2 this problem was solved.

Quick discharge from 100% to 90% when connected to AC

My Desire suffers from the following problem: whenever it's connected to AC, it will charge until 100% but then after some arbitrary time period it will discharge quickly to 90% after which it will slowly charge again until it reaches 100%. This can happen two or three times each night. This means that if you take your Desire out at the wrong moment, the battery charge will be at 90% instead of 100% which is EXTREMELY annoying.
I'm thinking that there must be other Desires with this problem, since my previous Desire (which was replaced because of WiFi-problems) exhibited the exact same behaviour. Does anyone else notice this? Or is anyone else willing to check (by means of using Juiceplotter overnight) if his/her Desire suffers from this as well? I just can't believe that the two Desires that I own/have owned are the only ones suffering from this ...
I already contacted HTC Customer Support and they told me that they would pass on this information to another department.
It's common... even I have it.
Whether it's a security or a bug (or both!) is completly unknown at this point I believe.

This has been discussed many times, and the concensus is that it is normal. When battery fully charged, it will stop until it falls below 90% at which point it will charge again.

My HTC Hero did not behave that way, and HTC did not explain to me that it was intended behaviour either.
Also, that would mean that the battery plot is incorrect since it shows rapid discharges from 100% to 90%, such as in the following image:
Furthermore, it seems that this problem (or feature ...?) disappears on at least some devices after rooting.
It seems to happen to me more often than not when I take the phone off the charger each morning. It's annoying but I need the phone on, so charging it to full while turned off each night's not an option.
This is usually done to exercise the battery.
I worked with developing a phone, and we did the same thing, in order for the battery capacity not to degrade because it keeps trickle charging at 100%.
So you shouldn't worry about this.
same happens to me, however i charge it over night and when i get up in the morning uplug and it charges for another 30mins (whilst i get ready for work) and its back up to 100%/99% which i can live with

Hm, my HTC Hero did not have this 'great feature'. I'd rather buy a new battery when this one has degraded too far, instead of having a not fully charged almost 50% of the times that I unplug it.
It would be more acceptable on a phone that would be able to go for at least 48 hours without intermediate charges but clearly, the Desire (just like most smartphones) can't do that.
first, apologise for reviving an old thread.
but it seems that charing by usb (via pc) does not have this problem.
also, charging by ac causes the battery to discharge at a faster rate...
Battery falls to 90% as soon as I unplug the charger
Same problem here, plug the charger before I sleep, at the morning the battery widget indicates 100% and the phone light is green, then I unplug the charger and suddently (really suddently, I mean quite instantly) the charge indicator falls to 89-91%.
Considering the poor duration of a fully charged battery I'd prefer not to lose the 10% of the charge before start using the device.
I'm quite sure this didn't appen with 1.15 stock ROM, I suppose I'd noticed it in case...
I can't remember if this appened after FOTA update from 1.15 to 1.21
With 3.1 modaco ROM I had this problem and now even with 1.23.351.1 Build rooted and A2SD+.
I tryed different radio ROMs without results..
I contacted HTC customer support, they told me to use an app manager like Taskiller to close unneeded applications that drain battery... lol
Obiouvsly they don't know anything about this problem..
Any ideas? It really hurts me to start every day with 90% of the battery!!
Thanks to all!
Hey, I have the same problem since I updated OTA version 1.21, never happened to me before with 1.15. Now when I wake up, I have fully (100%) charged battery, but after a minute or two it instantly jumps to 92%.
Any solutions?
Same here after the last update.

I've just sent a e-mail to the customer support of HTC explaining the problem, as soon as I have an answer I will post it here.
It should be interesting to do a factory reset and test with a recharge without installing any other stuff. Is there anyone who have a standard ROM (not rooted, original kernel) and want to do a try?
While I was writing they answered... They invited me to go to the nearest collection point to test another battery if available.
I'm starting to think the problem is not hardware related if other of our devices started to suffer the problem after the update..
I'll contact them again and we will see what appens.
Meanwhile if someone want to try what I suggested, it would be really apreciated.
Customer Support official answer.
The official answer: Send the device to us for repair. First try with another battery if you want (an if you can find another one...).
I'm not too happy to send my 3 weeks old device to them for 20 days so maybe I'll try to flash the 1.15 or 1.21 official ROM to see how the battery works. If anyone with the same problem wants to try to downgrade, please do it just to help to understand which is the problem.
I am having exactly same problem, i dont think its a battery issue either :/
Is there anyone who rooted and "desire" (wow, what a joke! ) to try a Froyo ROM to see if the problem persists? I suppose it should be totally different from 1.21 or 1.23...
I feel a bit lazy at the moment , I've just done a good setup and I'd like not to redo it again....

Maybe in the next days I'll try...
I used the phone till it automatically switched off, pulled out the battery for one minute, tryed to charge the phone when totally switched off and it charghed and stayed at 100% so I'm quite sure it's a ROM related problem.
You can see the next charge in the attached image (thanks to JuicePlotter)...

[Q] Z1c issue

Hello everyone. newbie here.
My sony Z1c seems to have developed a bug/issue. 2 days ago my phone was on charge, green led at the top was on and my battery showed at 100%. I unplugged the device jumped into bed, set my alarms as usual. I then woke up 2 hours later then i should of to find my z1c was dead. Nothing was running in the background etc so instantly knew something was up. Tried charging my phone at work via usb>pc and it kept saying my phone is losing charge quicker then its charging (never seen this message before) . I could turn the phone on but the battery level stayed at 2%, as soon as it was unplugged from the pc it would instantly die.
When i got home i done a few "reset" searches and come across the hold volume up and power at the same time until phone vibrates method. This now seems to allow my phone to charge normally again and the battery goes past 2%. However again today my phone went dead overnight. So the issue is still there, im just able to charge the device again.
I dont appear to have anything running in the background
havent done any firmware, software, app updates in the last couple of days (again that im aware off, unless they forced any)
also noticed the phone gets extremely hot at periods for unknown reasons?
Anyone here able to help or advice? is this a faulty battery, software, firmware issue etc? any fixes
d5503
running 4.4.4
14.4.a.0.108
Thanks in advance
Have you tried a different charger? Charge it using wall charger with supplied cable. I don't think firmware is draining your battery. Possible that u r caught up with a faulty battery if u don't have any issues with charger.
My advice "Head to Sony Service Centre asap".
Have you 'ever' installed any custom ROM on this phone then reflashed/restored something later after accquired? It could be the underlying system's battery state is different than the current running OS' one. Try calibrating the battery a couple of times to see if that make any difference.
Hello. Thank you for the replies.
The phone charges correctly via mains and usb(laptop,ps4 etc) since i done that power+volume up reset. Pretty sure my leads and plug are fine. i could try different usb leads though. the charge level is certainly showing me 100% charge
I have never used any ROM's or Roots. i dont know fully what they are. I used to have a jailbroken iphone so it sounds similar. Id be prepared to do down any of them routes if it fixes my phone
Everything updated has been official releases. I dont appear to of updated anything recently though so i cant put it down to a system update or new app update. - something might have glitched somewhere i dunno
Charged the phone during my first post and again it says its gone to 100% after a couple of hours. unplugged the charger. restarted the phone and checked nothing that hasnt been on for the last 3 months hasnt turnt on and all seems fine there. So just left it in standby
checked it 10minutes later to see charge levels. am down to 87%
using gsm battery app it says 68.9% app usage, when i click that
android system 53%
kernel (andoid os) 19.5%
then i have a list of other stuff running all be 2%
them 2 shouldnt be that high should they?
then when i go default settings>power> batt usage
android system 37%
googleplay service 21% (doesnt appear to be updating/syncing anything. should all be off. never used syncing)
screen 14%
android OS 5%
cell standby 5%
the rest of the list are 2's and 1's
phone was cool when charging, since rebooting the device and unplugging it, its now getting hot??? would of expected it to be the other way around!!!
Might want to give it a go of this:

Hi again, Jcw i done a full factory result and everything now appears to be fine now. Phone has been on for 3hours standby and on 98% battery, It would have been dead by now and extremely hot at the back. Now running alot cooler. Thanks for the advice.
Have no idea what happened. Something was seriously draining the battery though. Glad its fixed. Thanks again

[Q]SM-T211 battery drain problems

Hello,
I have a problem with this tablet , when i charge it to 100% and use it for like 5-10mins i'm suddenly at 1% battery. But i can still use youtube or other apps for 40mins + So i'm pretty sure the battery is at 95% or something.
Also when i charge and stop charging it can reset the whole thing and say that i have 2% battery.
I already tried to charge 100% > let it decharge 40-50% > power off 5houres > but didn't help..
Somebody said remove the battery for 5mins and problem is gone..
Anyone done this so far?
i'm on STOCK ROM , no root or what so ever.. NO battery save app or something like that.
Hi, I'm having the same issue but it's not as dire as yours. Since you're not rooted or anything, I strongly believe it's a hardware issue, try replacing your device cause it shouldn't drain that fast. I'm using nolekat rom and it takes me 10 hours to charge fully or more but half the time for it to be drained. I haven't tried removing my battery manually but you could try that too. Most likely it's a hardware issue since you didn't mess with it so much. Hope this helps.

Hi,
My tab is getting switched off frequently though the battery is fully charged, it suddenly dies down during any kind of work and im not having battery draining problem in my tab. But when I plug in a charger or battery bank then the tab works fine with out shut downing. Is this problem related to battery or hardwire or software. Kindly suggest if some one facing similar situation
Hi XDA
I have another problem, not too bad as yours, but very nagging and upsetting. What happens is that my tabet takes practically half a day for charging up the battery. It takes like 12 or more hours to charge up from 0 to 100%. I have tried unplugging the battery as you explained many times, also draining it, but nthing changes. And even worse it is when I'm just plugging my device after totally drained the battery, so when I try to boot my device it may boot up, when it does, after one minute it's turning off because of a suposedly 0% battery. Really I might get either that 0% or 1% battery, but after a minute when I just plug it in and boot up, it may turn off even though I turned off the sceen inmediately.
I think. the problen is maybe on the battery or in the USB port, I have tested many USB cables, many chargers, charging from my PC, but the problem keeps going an and on and on. I would like to know why this problems is happening, if I could fix it up by myself, for instance by replacing the battery or the USB port. This device was a gift, and since I got it I was dithering whether it was normal or not, but by asking soome mates and reading your post I realize that this is not normal.
Hope you read this quick reply. Many thanks for your advice and giving me advice on what and how I should do...

[Q] After update to 1.40.401.8 very slow charging

After the latest update my M9 charges very slow. It takes 6 hours or even more than that, even with the Rapid Charger 2.0
If I reboot my device before before I charge it, then it charges normally, in under 2 hours.
Any solutions?
I am trying to fing out where the problem is, and I suspect GSAM Battery Monitor Pro and maybe an app called Screen Adjuster that might somehow interfere.
I have an unbranded device and it runs the official firmware.
Is anybody else having the same issue?
Have you tried wiping the cache and recalibrating the battery by holding both volume buttons and power button at the same time for over a minute?
No, I haven't. Are there any other issues I should expect if I recalibrate the battery?
Have the same issue .. S-OFF, ARHD 8.1, Firmware 1.40.401.8
No solution yet :/
So it must be the new firmware. This is really bad. I have cleared the cache but I don't really see the point of recalibration. If I restart my device before charging, it always charges after the reboot normally...
I disabled GSAM yesterday and the screen adjuster app, but the problem remains. I wonder, is there anybody out there running the new firmware without this issue?
Same issue here. Stock non-rooted ROM, stock firmware, S-Off, unlocked BL.
Had also the same issue with 1.40.401.5, thought it would be fixed in the official update (1.40.401.8). It appears it's not... Bad news when an update supposed to solve issues brings new ones...
With 1.40,my charging is way quicker with a quick charge 2.0 adapter. GSam battery monitor reports higher ampere and a battery change ~80%/h now (from empty to 85% as usual). Before this, battery change stalled quickly but now it's stable.
Did you factory reset your device after the update?
Same problem here.
No factory reset after the update. Should I? Or is there another way?
I did a factory reset when I first noticed problem with slow charging. At first it seemed to work and it charged normal speed but now its back to slow.
My M9 will only charge when i turn it off, plug it in the ac. If its on, even though the indicator says its charging, it doesnt, help.
The update was supposed to improve (quick) charging... Instead it made it worse ;(
I'm curious if there is anyone who does not have this problem...

Mine charges a bit faster with the quick charger, but only after a full reboot. And only once, after disconnecting the charger it reverts back to verrry slow charging when connected again.
I've the same issue. All stock, latest firmware.
Unless i reboot the device, it takes 8 hours to charge. If i reboot it before plug in, it takes about 2 hours.
Something is wrong were...
Same problem here but it is intermittent. I plugged my phone in earlier and it charged 10% in 1.5h on a 2A charger. So annoying!!!!
This is a big issue for me since I cannot rely on my M9 to get me through the day without having a charger with me. I am going to stop using my M9 till the problem gets solved somehow. Sorry HTC but this is a big issue for me and despite the fact that I love HTC products, I cannot ignore this issue. Back to my iPhone...
I agree on the Factory Reset, I do it every time I take a OTA update. It's jus my practices as it solved issues in the past and I kinda stick to it...

no its a real bug, regardless of the charger, when it appears only a reboot solves it
anyway the 5.1 / 2.x update is close but yea bug like that will cause serious hurt

(SOLVED) Pixel 2 XL charging stuck at 99% all of a sudden

My 2 XL is only a month old. There is no complain about charging before. It was normal. Hit 100% everytime. Until several days ago, I woke up in the morning and my phone does stuck at 99% with charging rapidly status. I've tried to drain the battery and fully charge, try to flash factory image, but the problem still exist. The phone does charge normally to 90%, then getting slow and more slow when hit 95%, it takes very long time to get to 99, then it stuck for hours. I'm using app called AccuBattery, just want to monitor the charge speed. And there it is, the phone stop the charging at 99%, charging speed shows -1 , so basically the phone cut the power input when hitting 99% although the status still not fully charged. Until I rebooted the phone then it will hit 100%.
So what happened to my phone? I'm using original charger from the box. Is it software or hardware issue? Thank you
The first image is when stucked on 99% and the charge speed show -1. After that I rebooted the phone then charge speed increasing, not -1 anymore at 99%. The second image is when the phone says fully charged at 100% and charge speed back to -1, which is normal if the phone already fully charged.

What is it at though? But on all my previous rmas, I had sometimes great issues in from charging past 98%.. I would have to turn it off for it to register that it's actually charged to 100% and more than likely it would drop to 99 as soon as I unplugged it.

And a little afraid that this issue would make any affect in the future, broken battery or worse. If there's an explanation how this is happened and it's safe, then I might not make any complain anymore.

I had the same issue with my Oct 18 2 XL.
Download Accubattery and "calibrate" your battery.
It removes a file (.bin or something) that resets the batter charge percentage.
I really think the 99% thing is harmless, but if it bugs you (I get it) Accubattery will remove the file that resets it.
Good luck!

I currently using AccuBattery as shown on my post attachment and I didn't found any "calibrate" menu inside the app.
I've done so many methods, like drain the battery to 0% and charge it or re-flash factory image but seems none worked. So I search on the internet about delete the .bin file under root/data folder, but I didn't found any folder called data on /root (currently running android 10). I'm stucked.
So I'm thinking how if pull the battery out and put it back maybe it will reset something, but it seems impossible to do with myself. Until I found a method to hard reboot the phone with press power button + vol down for maybe 10sec. My phone was 75% at that time, after hard reboot my battery increased to 78%. Then I tried to charge the phone and voila, hit 100% normally, didn't need to unplug and replug to hit 100% anymore. It's been 3 days my phone is act normal again. Hope it will lasts forever.
So my conclusion is, seems the hard reboot method somehow force cut the power from the battery to the phone just like we pull out battery then put it back and maybe it's reset something maybe like batterystats or anything. Idk. But I'm glad nothing happened and it was just software error.

When you download Accubattery, open it, it automatically 'calibrates' your battery (see pic)

Oh, I just realized that. Thank you. But I think it didn't work for me. Nvm, my phone is normal now
I had somewhat of the same issue with my phone too. Would sit around 98% then after taking it off the charger overnight, my battery would drop like a rock to around 85%. No idea if I was just imagining things but I don't remember that much battery life wasted away like that overnight when not in use at all.
I also sent mine in for RMA last Thursday and get it back later on today so hopefully the issue will be resolved.
I have also been experiencing the same issue since upgrading to Pie last year. Once it returned to normal for 1 month only and then went back to 98% charging issue until today

I would assume broken battery. Never experienced drain so much like that when not in use. My phone normally about 1-2% drop overnight (always on display off). It's great you got replacement, but check twice for screen, 2 XL known for defective screen.

Yeah I am content with the RMA replacement it's just fine, no issues thus far. Just annoying the update breaks charging sound file and lockscreen lock/unlock sounds. But I eventually got those issues fixed too.
