[Q] What you should not do/install/flash?? - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hii to all of you guyz
Maybe my question to all of you will help all off us together
Well I want to flash custom roms
I have read everything about knox
And I am not a noob at rooting ... flashing
But as I can see there is some things unclear with the knox thing
Well I know it is a warranty thing and I dont need it anyway couse I already woid my warranty by changing display by myself
But the question would be for all of you guys is what you should not try/do or flash
Couse it can then brick your phone?
Reading all about knox someone said you should not downgrade or you get instantly a brick
Is that true?? Couse I want to install lollipop and who knows I am on kitkat...does that mean I can not install JB or maybe if I make a backup of stock kitkat and go to lollipop can I go back to my stock kitkat backup?
Or is it like it was with my old phones like warranty void if knox tripped but if I have cwm or twrp
Can I feel free to flash anything with no worries?? Of course for my s4 mini 9195 model
Or should we all know what things are risky and can brick your phone
Please help us all
Thanks

Downgrading from stock kit kat to stock jelly bean can be a problem with Knox because of the bootloader. because the latest stock KitKat Bootloader is running version 2 Knox. And as far as I've read cannot be downgraded without some difficulty.
Personally I haven't tried flashing any custom ROMs yet but maybe try to stay away from flashing jelly bean or downgrading just because of possible issues. but flashing with a custom kernel between lollipop and KitKat custom roms shouldn't be a problem just maybe downgrading to jelly bean could be.
If you did want to downgrade to Jellybean definitely do some more reading or wait for some more experienced users to reply don't take the risk with your device unless you're sure everything will be ok.
Best of luck.

[Q] {Q} Help please!

Hi Guys, I have a N7105 that is running stock and is rooted.
I have never flashed a custom rom, because its all a bit above my head honestly and I didnt want to ruin my phone.
Of course, I realize that I am stuck on 4.1.2 whilst everyone else has update to 4.3
My first question is, what is the best way to Unroot my N7105, also the easiest, I cannot stress how uncoordinated I am at this kind of stuff, so I need the easiest way possible.
Then, whats the best Stock rom, because I love the S-pen etc and dont want to loose functionality of it, that I can flash?
Then, once I am done, will I be able to root my device again ?
Thank you in advance for any help, It is really appreciated!

if you just need root access
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2032849
the you will gain root access with your own stock rom
if you would like custom roms with stock and additional features there should be many available
just read and see which suits your needs best

u mean u want 4.1.2 rom or 4.3 rom ?
to be frank N7105 custom TW rom is not a lot, unless u take the risk and you know how to flash those Tmob ROM / AT&T rom (to be flashed on your N7105 device).
you can find those custom ROM under N7105 Android development forum.
If you want with the all original S-pen / Samsung feels, you have to flash TW ROM only (stock / custom).
Currently for N7105 original custom ROM, is only LionROM. But if you want other(s), you can try SkyNote from AT&T forum, but you have to read first before you flash, on how to make it work with our N7105 device.
If currently your device is rooted, those custom ROM will keep your rooting, so there's no need to worry about how to root back (just follow the flashing instructions).
But if you flash the official stock ROM from sammobile, you will loose your root, and you should be able to root back also.
It's all your choice. Good luck, mate.
Sent from the corner of this rounded earth.
Hi Guys, I am after the link for the 4.3 ROM if possible. I went on the Sammobile site and it says there is an update for Optus N7105, but I cant find one for Telstra, does it matter if I flash one that isnt for my carrier?

[Q] Rooting and Unrooting without FLASHING ?

Hello,
I own a N5110 (Wifi) version of the Galaxy NOTE 8.0
The warranty is void since the first day... So I don't have a problem with rooting
I saw this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpMY1xqXBhU
But I've read the comments, ppl have problems!!
And I'm not sure if it works with N5110 or for N5100 variant only!
Another Q:
Will the UNROOTING Process be easy, or it'll require flashing?
Won't I receive updates from SAMSUNG while being rooted (Without custom ROM) ??

For the first question, I am not sure never rooted with that.
For the second question you do need to flash the stock. Usually people just do that to hide that it has been rooted. If it is for that purpose that you are asking, and you have flashed roms, I recommend using Triangle Away, because that erases the counter of how many ROMs you have installed.
If you are at the stock you will receive updates, and if you do the update you will lose root. I have done that in the past with my Droid Bionic. I do not recommend it though because it lagged the hell out of my phone

Well, what's the point in installing the STOCK ROM if I wanted to UNROOT in my case?? (I mean I've no warranty anyway)
Can I just unroot without flashing?
And Yes I know about Triangle Away, I've read about it recently.
For the first question>> what do you recommend for rooting NOTE 8.0 N5110 ?
Thanks

As far as I know(being doing this for 3 years) There is no way to unroot without flashing the Stock Rom. The only way to flash the stock is using odin.
Honestly I do not know the best easy way to do it. All depends on the version you are at. I was on the updated version(not sure the build number). That framework apk didn't work with the version I had. The way I rooted was by first unlocking, then installed the TWRP through odin, then flashed a zip that rooted my phone. I do not recall any of the links. For the files, I lost them all because I just got a new computer and I was dumb enough to not do the back up on the other computer. Also I dont remember if there was steps in between, so I dont recommend following what I mentioned .
the way that I did is very similar to this one:

[Q]Flashing Stock Rom

Hi.. i'm new to android and samsung things
that's why i'm here to ask something and hope could get a fast reply
Problem:
I have a note 2 N-7100 with 4.3 stock rom(unroot, OTA updated to 4.3 from 4.1.2)
I wan to know how to flash back to 4.1.2(4.1.1 if possible)(step-by-step)
done some searching over the net and all thread confused me
will 4.3 stock rom flashed to 4.1.2 or 4.1.1 stock will void the warranty(Knox)
What is the Risk i have to take?
Why i want to downgrade?
Crazy battery drain rate.. even when turn off the phone(1day about 8%)
Sometimes shuttering when hearing music
any reply is appreciate.. TQ
Your Knox flag will become 0*1. You can flash stock 4.1 through odin. But you will need to format your internal memory as well as your all apps will be deleted.

tq for the reply..
so.. i just need odin and the stock rom downloaded from sammobile
and i dont need any custom recovery.. am i right?
well the apps can be redownload
No you don't need custom recovery for flashing stock.
As joy854 said your knox flag will become 0*1. It means you lose warranty for ever and that you lose the ability to update the phone the normal samsung way.
I recommend to you that you try custom rom like hurricane or phoenix. I get more than 2 days battery with hurricane and note 3 apps.

So.. will custom rom void my warranty by trigger the knox?
Be careful!!
Hey man if you have taken the 4.3 update from OTA then you cannot downgrade to 4.1.2 stock because that 4.3 update came with Knox bootloader, because of that you cannot downgrade your phone from older firmwares which do not have that knox bootloader. It might brick your device mate, so just be careful man.

I am having similar issues with you, but i am not thinking of downgrading my ROM, You can solve the battery drain problem by downloading an app called Battery Doctor (tried putting a link here to it but the forum wont allow me since im a junior member, but you can search it out in the google play store) It is very useful and it helped me a lot. But after updating OTA to 4.3 I do get stutters when hearing music, a tad few seconds sometimes in between music. I wonder if there is a problem to solve this? Other than that. 4.3 works great on my GT-N7105. Thank you.

Yes, if you want root or custom rom it will trigger the knox thing
AFAIK flashing anything non-stock in odin will trigger knox flash counter. Root will be blocked by knox apps which can be disabled, but I don't think having root permissions itself would trigger the counter.
Personally I wouldnt care about the knox counter, so long as the issue was hardware related I would play ignorant; there's no way they can prove your device wasn't sold to you with a voided counter. That's not to say they'll validate your warranty, but with a bit of a fight the correct result would me they have to honour it - but no one wants that hassle.

Upgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.3?

Hello,
I haven't been here in so long. After reading through the forum I am a little confused.
I am on stock 4.1.2, rooted, and using CW recovery.
I see all the discussion about not updating to 4.3, but I'm not sure if what I have read is up to date or not.
Is there still a problem updating to 4.3? KNOX?
How should I update to 4.3? Do it need to undo root and go back to stock recovery? I'm not sure how to do this. I have used custom ROMS in the past but it's been too long.
Also, it seems that rooting 4.3 is no problem. Is this true?
Thanks,
rblancrt

Sure, you can upgrade to 4.3 if you want to
the reason why people said not to upgrade to 4.3 is because a lot of people DO NOT READ and come asking for help this or that after they upgrade
and the main reason why people mention not to upgrade is because you can unlock for free as long as you can downgrade your phone to 4.1.1, mainly the bootloader since 4.3 bootloader comes with KNOX
since you're still on 4.1.2, you can downgrade and unlock your phone for free while you still can before upgrading it to 4.3
so this is what you should do, check, if your phone is fully unlocked, if not, unlock it then upgrade
or if you're rich and you don't care, just upgrade and then if you wish to unlock later, pay for unlock code =D
and rooting shouldn't be any problem regardless of which version of android you're on.
to upgrade, you can just download the stock img and flash it through recovery or just use odin flash it
or if you're prefer the old fashion way, the long way in fact, is to unroot, upgrade through system update
I would say don't upgrade. The new bootloader has a warranty bit (aka the Knox counter) that, once tripped, can't be reset. Ever. By anyone. The ONLY way I would even consider upgrading is if you need Knox security for work (the majority of us don't). I wouldn't even upgrade if I were selling the device. Let the new owner make that decision for themself. But, I would unlock it. Even if you never need it, it may add a few bucks to the selling price of the phone later on.

But what exactly is the effect of this Knox counter. If it's only that I can't reflash a stock ROM and send it back to Samsung that time has long passed.
I guess I'm getting bored with my phone, had it almost two years, and thought updating to the latest firmware might help.
What are the repercussions of going to 4.3 or higher?
Thanks again for the great info.
If you are out of warranty, the only drawback, imo, to updating is you cannot downgrade the firmware or modem. You could still flash older roms and kernels, just not the full firmware and not the modem.
Personally, I wouldn't let knox deter me from updating, or recommending it. This is for each person to decide, but I feel the benefits outweigh any drawbacks. knox is easily removed or disabled, and I find the latest builds to be some of the best in terms of performance and battery. (of course there are always some who disagree with that on every update!) of course there are no guarantees, but most seem to be quite happy with both 4.3 and 4.4.2.
As for downgrading.....I have never found a real need for doing so. Some have though, so thats something you need to decide for yourself.
You can try some of the available roms w/o updating the firmware btw. But if you decide you like them, I do suggest going back and fully updating for stability and performance, but thats something for you to decide if you want to go that route.
There will be some who agree and some who do not, so in the end its up to you make an educated decision whether or not you want to.

How to root?!?

Im on 5.1.1 G925TUVU3DOJ7. Is it possible to root 5.1.1 without tripping knox right now? Or can i downgrade to 5.0.2 by flashing stock 5.0.2 with odin then root with ping pong without tripping knox?
Also what are the best roms, kernals & other cool tweaks you recommend? Just got this phone so i would really appreciate the help, thanks have a good one.
I don't think there's a way to root without tripping KNOX right now. There was an engineering bootloader that allowed flashing without tripping KNOX, but I don't know if it still works (it might). However, this bootloader breaks the fingerprint scanner. There is no way to have an un-tripped KNOX and working fingerprint scanner at the moment, I know that for sure.

PingPong used to work, it doesn't anymore. I agree with what the other poster said about the engineering bootloader however this file was requested to be removed by samsung (sboot.bin) so good luck finding it. I think you might be onto something downgrading to a previous release, I'm not too sure but the OH6 I think is the one that I used PingPong on to gain root but I don't know if the new bootloader will let u. It should though, if it replaces the sboot.bin it should let u downgrade. I'm just not sure, this new update has caused a lot of stuff to not want to flash for me, I'm waiting on my new internet to arrive before I start messing with it anymore because my phone is my only link to the outside world. if you find out please let us know? I'm very interested in the answer.
I've heard Hacker Kernel is a really good one, people seem to love it.

If I remember correctly, PingPong only worked on 5.0.X, and once you update to 5.1.X, you are no longer able to downgrade back to 5.0.X. I think if OP is on 5.1.1 his options for root are VERY limited if he wants an in-tact KNOX, especially since you are indeed correct, and the engineering bootloader seems to have been removed.
S6 Edge frozen on G925TUVU3DOJ7
guys i need help , after flashing the rom G925TUVU3DOJ7 on my S6 Edge 925T its stuck on galaxy logo and not booting , i've trying to use unikernal but its not work i get like flashing is locked !!!
Rooting is a risky business since last update, make sure you have a good download or download again from Samsung website and try again.
Pp.
Really why is everyone so concerned about knox? All it does is make it so you can't use Samsung Pay. So use Android Pay. Set it up before you root then back it up after you root. Restore it whenever you flash a new rom and it will work. I rooted the day I got my S6 Edge which was before the Plus came out and I have never had any problems. Everyone worried about knox this and knox that has a messed up phone.
HI,,I updated firmware 5.1.1 to a rooted G925T using Smart Switch (no errors etc) now the phone is stuck on android Samsung logo so I tried to reflash the firmware many times using Odin3 the only frimware it took with no errors was (G925TUVS3DOJC) which is the last one but still the same thing stuck at Samsung logo so i searched it online and it says something wrong with EFS and has Bad Root Key it know as DRK (DEV Root Key) and don't know how to fix that. anyone can hepl plz.
