How to root?!? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Im on 5.1.1 G925TUVU3DOJ7. Is it possible to root 5.1.1 without tripping knox right now? Or can i downgrade to 5.0.2 by flashing stock 5.0.2 with odin then root with ping pong without tripping knox?
Also what are the best roms, kernals & other cool tweaks you recommend? Just got this phone so i would really appreciate the help, thanks have a good one.

I don't think there's a way to root without tripping KNOX right now. There was an engineering bootloader that allowed flashing without tripping KNOX, but I don't know if it still works (it might). However, this bootloader breaks the fingerprint scanner. There is no way to have an un-tripped KNOX and working fingerprint scanner at the moment, I know that for sure.

PingPong used to work, it doesn't anymore. I agree with what the other poster said about the engineering bootloader however this file was requested to be removed by samsung (sboot.bin) so good luck finding it. I think you might be onto something downgrading to a previous release, I'm not too sure but the OH6 I think is the one that I used PingPong on to gain root but I don't know if the new bootloader will let u. It should though, if it replaces the sboot.bin it should let u downgrade. I'm just not sure, this new update has caused a lot of stuff to not want to flash for me, I'm waiting on my new internet to arrive before I start messing with it anymore because my phone is my only link to the outside world. if you find out please let us know? I'm very interested in the answer.
I've heard Hacker Kernel is a really good one, people seem to love it.

If I remember correctly, PingPong only worked on 5.0.X, and once you update to 5.1.X, you are no longer able to downgrade back to 5.0.X. I think if OP is on 5.1.1 his options for root are VERY limited if he wants an in-tact KNOX, especially since you are indeed correct, and the engineering bootloader seems to have been removed.

S6 Edge frozen on G925TUVU3DOJ7
guys i need help , after flashing the rom G925TUVU3DOJ7 on my S6 Edge 925T its stuck on galaxy logo and not booting , i've trying to use unikernal but its not work i get like flashing is locked !!!

Rooting is a risky business since last update, make sure you have a good download or download again from Samsung website and try again.

Really why is everyone so concerned about knox? All it does is make it so you can't use Samsung Pay. So use Android Pay. Set it up before you root then back it up after you root. Restore it whenever you flash a new rom and it will work. I rooted the day I got my S6 Edge which was before the Plus came out and I have never had any problems. Everyone worried about knox this and knox that has a messed up phone.

HI,,I updated firmware 5.1.1 to a rooted G925T using Smart Switch (no errors etc) now the phone is stuck on android Samsung logo so I tried to reflash the firmware many times using Odin3 the only frimware it took with no errors was (G925TUVS3DOJC) which is the last one but still the same thing stuck at Samsung logo so i searched it online and it says something wrong with EFS and has Bad Root Key it know as DRK (DEV Root Key) and don't know how to fix that. anyone can hepl plz.

[Q] No root with ANK1 - is it safe to rollback to previous firmware?

I'm just wondering if it's safe to rollback the firmware on my Galaxy Tab S 10.5" to the previous one or if it causes some sort of conflict.
I want to do so because I've just installed the most recent one (T800ODD1ANK1 - India) and I can't root it using Cf-Autoroot posted here.
Thanks!

Nothing. I did it with Odin and it just reboots to the same old unrooted tablet. All is working fine as usual, but no root.
What botters me the most is that I had Xposed framework installed but now it has no functionality and all the modules I had installed don't work. I would install the previous firmware but I'm afraid of breaking something, with installing older software on top of newer one.
I was able to root the US version of that ROM (T800XXU1ANK1) using CF Auto Root from Chainfire:
http://download.chainfire.eu/473/CF...uto-Root-chagallwifi-chagallwifixx-smt800.zip
Perhaps give that a shot???
I will but the India version has a more recent changelist (which was the reason why I chose to install it).
Thanks in advance.
As I predicted, since the changelist is different (your version has the same as the older one I had, with functioning root, but not with this one), no root.
Does anyone know if it is safe to install a previous version of the software? Like, for example, Cellular South ANK1 (with an older changelist).
Thanks.

I'm having the same issue as the original poster. It says I am rooted, but I'm not because root checker just keeps spinning and there isn't a SU# icon in my apps. I've done this with Odin about a million times before, for some reason on my new T800 (after I updated the software), it doesn't work.
Am I missing a step because I have the same version you have? Extract the file. Load the md5 file into AP. Hit Start. Wait for it to reboot. Right?
Yea root isn't working for me with T800XXU1ANK1. =(
Im assuming you ran Super SU and updated the binaries or whatever it asks, or updated the app in playstore?
Ive done nothing different and root works fine.
I was thinking about another root alternative. I was thinking about downloading the supersu zip and save it to the device or sd card. Then flash twrp recovery with odin, then boot into recovery and flash the supersu zip to get root? Could that work as an alternative since it flashes root in the process?
I just rolled back to T800XXU1ANJ6 and I am rooted.
I just bought a Tab S, and I can't seem to find an answer to a question that relates to this thread. Is there any advantage to updating before rooting?
I can't decide if I should root it now or update the software, and then root. After searching some, it appears that it doesn't matter whether I upgrade or not, but I can't seem to find if there is any advantage to updating it then rooting. Like, is it easier to get the latest firmware that way?

If i am correct, There should be stock custom roms available that are prerooted so you can flash over. As for an ota update, that is faster than being rooted then flashing lollipop rom.
Anyway we have a lollipop rom already built. Its smooth and most things are working. Its really cool and id rather use this than waiting for samsung to get the latest update out. Do you have the 10.5 in or 8.4 inch?

I have the wifi 10.5 inch.
So, you are saying update OTA then root, unless I want to jump to Lollipop (which I do), which in that case it doesn't matter so I should just root and flash a lollipop rom?
Thanks for helping me out.

Up to you If you want to jump to lollipop/CM12, just run flash Cfautoroot( with odin to root) then install twrp and flash the lollipop rom. There is a thread for cm12/lollipop in the development tab s section.
But wait! Rooting trips knox with voids your warranty. Same users has reported getting service from samsung for free of charge from defective units and some had to pay to get defective parts replaced by samsung. 50/50 chance. I took the risk and havent got a hardbrick or anything yet.

Thank you for the heads-up. I've rooted all 6 of my android phones that I've had, so I'm not too worried about voiding the watrranty. Judging by your reply it sounds like there are a lot of lemons out there for this device. Mine seems to be running okay, but I just can't take all the lag that I assume comes from TW and bloatware. My HTC One M8 with Lollipop seems faster and smoother than my Tab S at stock. Although after typing the last sentence, I put Nova on there and sped up all the animations and it is definitely light years faster than my One M8 now.
I think the answer to the original post is that the Su binary was installed, but the op didn't download then update Super su after rooting. You wont get full root until you do as there is no app to handle root requests.

I have a GalaxyS6 Sprint 5.1.1 G920PVPU2BOFE And I Want To Root It. Yes Or No?

I really want to root it. i love having the ability to do what i want with my phone and all the fun stuff rooting brings with it self. I want your opinions? If you guys can supply me with links and etc like a stock firmware so just in case i want to unroot and etc. I can't find any for my version which is G920PVPU2BOFE. Also Is There a CWM or TWERP? Well if you guys could help that would be great.
Also are there any good and stable roots for my phones version? I was reading around and found one that had something to do about flashing a new kernel and doing that it didn't let the user use private mode and a few other things. I'm not sure if i should wait it out. I have looked around a lot but couldn't find much about rooting my phones current software version.
Well, for me i dont know too much for running Xposed just yet but im trying to see if theirs any guides for this phone.
But for me to completely UNROOT it,is to flash the stock Rom OF7 tar with Odin....it actually fixed a soft bootloop or softbrick i had.

- TWRP - http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s6/orig-development/twrp-2-8-6-0-t3084725 -
So i was skeptical just like you and well I rooted my phone pretty good advantages havent tinkered much yet but i decided to might as well flash a recovery since im rooted and voided my warrenty. so the only thing available was TWRP which can be found in the forums.
I downloaded a custom rom known as Twisted Projects its mainly stock with just extra features to it
BUT my mistake was that i didnt select Unlock BootLoader OEM before i restarted it becaused it said to update supersu since its outdated on the custom rom i guess. And well in which resulted for me to get a custom binary lock F R P. and i couldnt get to recovery only download mode, and then flashing OF7 tar and i got myself back to normal. And rooted it again, still debating to go to it again. but thats an FYI ake sure to select Developer options, Usb Debugging, and OEM Unlock before doing anything.

Thanks for everything yo. Only Thing Holding Me Back Is My Phone Is leased but i herd sprint doesn't really care much. I'd just have to flash it back to normal and this brings me to my next question. I See Theres stock firmwares for OF7 and none for OFE and if i where to soft brick my phone can i flash the OF7 firmware on it with no problem? because i herd something about we can't go to previous versions and etc. Also another question do you notice any things that aren't working out so well on the root since we have to flash it as a new kernal. I herd some battery drain issues and over heating and some stuff like that. They where rare cases but just wondering And on the root of my phone i download the OFE kernal from the link you provided and flash it through odin and then im rooted correct? i am a little skeptical on rooting again cause its a more expensive phone and i wouldn't want to mess up haha.

No i did not sadly. I updated it on accident and now i'm on G920PVPU2BOH1 5.1.1 and i really want to root it lmao. I'm just waiting but no luck and no root. Really? Link? Well thats good. But is it worth it at the moment? like i herd private mode and a few other things get disabled. I mean is there any downsides? i used to be rooted and loved it but my old phone (GS3) was purchased regularly. This phone i'm currently leasing it. So is there any downsides to that as well? Sorry for being so skeptical lmao It's a new phone and don't want nothing to go bad on it :good:
Saafir said:
I do not use private mode but there is a work around for it. Unikernel plus TWRP will trip the Knox counter and as of now Samsung Pay wont work. Other than that root is always worth it. Thats super dope and its good to hear xposed is still working for it as well. Do you think the company would care if i root it? and then put it back to stock after my two years are up? i have warranty on it so thats the only downside since its leased and something goes bad thats 700 dollars lmao but i doubt anything would go wrong. I've herd several cases where people would send their phones back with knox tripped and gotten them fixed no problem. Thanks for the link btw now its all up to the decision aha. Also thanks for replying back so quick

G925T Do's and Don't's

Hey guys! I've been rooting and flashing phones for a while now, however this is going to be my first Samsung device and it seems like the rooting proccess is different. Just ordered one off of eBay and it's coming in some time next week.
I've been searching and reading countless threads on how to root and flash the S6 Edge, but still wanted to know all the do's and don't's when flashing the phone.
First thing I want to do is obviously root the phone when I get it. I don't know which s/w version it will come with, so what will be the easiest method to root the phone?
From what I've read, flashing a custom recovery such as TWRP will trip KNOX. Besides that, what else can trip it?
Also, it looks like flashing a custom kernel is required to root the phone. On the LG G3, for example, I could just flash a SuperSU zip from recovery to root the phone. Does it not work like that with this phone?
Thank you for your help.
Lastest 5.1.1 requires custom kernel to root. If the phone comes with 5.0.2, imo, do not upgrade, use ping pong root (google it) to keep warranty.

Seconded. From what I understand, there's no way to root and keep KNOX untripped and have your fingerprnt scanner work on 5.1.1. You either have a tripped KNOX or a broken fingerprint scanner. If you're on 5.1.1 and dont care about KNOX (I don't) I recommend UniKernel to root. I've found it helps a lot with battery life, especially when paired with XstreStoLite ROM.
Samsung Pay will be broken too.
I have UniBase on my Rooted S6 Edge. I have had no improvements on battery. I have to charge it atleast twice a day. Which is okay, But rather annoying when in the middle of a conversation and have to either charge it or it dies.

Try XstreStoLite 2.4. It comes with UniKernel v9 and that combo has done wonders for my standby battery life. Under use, the battery life is about the same, but standby has increaded drastically.
Don't root until you're sure you won't need Samsung's repair service.
Use it a lot and stress it to the limits with hardcore games to find out if your S6e gets the blocky screen disorder or 8bit graphics corruption problem. Mine goes 8bit when it's cold outside or when games heat up the SoC so it's going in for repairs.

S6 Edge Root

Hi guys i havent been in the forums in a while and i thoght about rooting my device cause i formatted my phone and lost a bunch of pics that i want to recover. long story short i have tryied many apps and none seem to be able to recover the deleted pics. the only one so far that people claim that can do it is DiskDigger or something like it, but for it to fully work it needs ROOT. so my problem is that unless there is a 100% way of getting my deleted pics which at this point i doubt, then lets please proceed.
Since i need to ROOT im gonna give you guys my phone specs so you guys can get a picture and advice me better cause i dont want to mess up this phone cause is my daily driver.

is everything here ok? does anything seem ok in my phone? is it rootable?
ok first of all let me say that i do not care about the pay methods but i do care about losing other functionality like fingerprint scanner of LTE and less battery life and stuff like that. mine last me about a whole day with moderate use and some gaming in between.
i want basically to ROOT my phone and if possible and available without tripping the cursed knox so i can if available intall a custom recovery so i can backup and restore my phone from (on that actually works) cause i coulnt for the life of my phone NEVER restore from an image done by my S4 with TWRP or i never knew how to do it cause when i tryied it to fully wipe ended up having to reinstall the full firmware and rooting from scratch.
Also if available which apps and in which directories can be frozen and which ones can be unistalled cause im tired of facebook and instagram and Tmo useless crapware.
Sorry for the long and winded speech but this phone is almost a $1000 and i dont have insurance anymore and if knox tripped samsung wont fix or exchange.
thanks in advanced
have a nice day
sorry for the length again
Apparently you have done some reading (and if not, start reading) because you are mentioning all or most of the issues that some folks are experiencing with this phone when attempting to root with latest firmware updates. ( Not to mention the bricks. )
At first release it was possible with little consequences but that changed in a hurry with updates and with every update it becomes harder and more dangerous to root safely.
There is very little going on in development, just some rehashed versions of the old firmware and in the international forum there are some roms that lose a lot of features you want.
If you really need and rely on your expensive phone and need all features working, leave it stock.
As for your lost images, well your going to have to use your imagination and try to remember what they were.
I was a diehard rooter with all my devices until I met up with this Samsung 6Edge, I love the phone and am a big fan of Samsung so I'm sticking with stock debloated for now, I'm learning to live "stock" and enjoying my phone with all features working properly.

Yes, disabling all and any bloatware that gives you the option to disable.
When my phone is sitting idle it goes into 99% deep sleep.
With light use I'll get 30 + hours from a charge.
I don't subscribe to Facebook or any of those social media apps and for games I have a Tab2 running CM. I basically use my phone for calls, messages and photos and a couple of forums.

ok first of all let me say that i do not care about the pay methods but i do care about losing other functionality like fingerprint scanner of LTE and less battery life and stuff like that. mine last me about a whole day with moderate use and some gaming in between.
i want basically to ROOT my phone and if possible and available without tripping the cursed knox so i can if available intall a custom recovery so i can backup and restore my phone from (on that actually works) cause i coulnt for the life of my phone NEVER restore from an image done by my S4 with TWRP or i never knew how to do it cause when i tryied it to fully wipe ended up having to reinstall the full firmware and rooting from scratch.

I agree with @PanchoPlanet to an extent. There are 2 ways to root the S6 Edge right now. One works just fine with no issues. I have been rooted since I bought the device before Samsung Pay came out. The other way that people have been using to avoid tripping knox will screw up your phone. If you don't care about Samsung Pay then you can simply use CF-Auto root like always. then flash TWRP after you root. The only thing that has made rooting unsafe is the people trying to avoid knox. I keep posting everywhere that people need to stop worrying about knox. Unless you are in a security job or a government job or you want to use Samsung Pay then knox is absolutely of no concern. People worried about getting their device fixed or returning it because of the knox trip, I have read many people were able to without problems.
*Edit*
This root method works just fine --> Here
Except I use the newest Unikernel --> Here

The baseband doesn't matter the build does. It does work with the build you are on.
Ok so, so far what i have done is just odin the UNIKERNEL which also rooted my phone. Everything is working nice exept for titanium which i already asked in another thread. So my next question is: is it safe to factory restore my phone from the phones menu -->backup and reset-->factory data reset <--
Is this safe and will it still remain rooted so i can install titanium and a custom recovery so i can do a full image?
Can someone plz answer today to see if im able to get my phone up and running by tonite?
Thanks again and in advanced.

Just install TWRP and flash SuperSU.
So there is noway to do this without tripping knox?
bump!
No.
Let me add on a bit to my initial response. Rooting the phone will trip Knox. Has been this way for quite some time. Discussed across many thread here and elsewhere.
Now the question comes up as to what do you lose by tripping Knox? Samsung Pay will never work for you. Android Pay may or may not work. Many people have been able to get it working at least in part, but disable Root (via SuperSu) when using Android Pay. I don't use either of those, so I don't care.
Then the question comes up if this voids warranty. The answer is only if you say "Hey, I rooted my phone and then broke something!" If you need warranty for a physical defect, go back to stock via Odin and you shouldn't have a problem. If you root your phone and then install a ROM not meant for your phone or local (like a Note ROM or an international ROM) you are probably going to mess something up that will be immediately obvious. The solution is not to do that.
Realistically, there aren't a ton of great ROMs available for this phone and most are based on stock anyway. No CM13 as yet. If you can live with your phone un-Rooted, that might be the wisest choice.
That said, I rooted my phone as soon as I got it. I went the full route, didn't care about tripping Knox and still don't. I have run both Renegade and TeamSPR ROMs and have been happy with them.
Now you can decide what to do.
Or u could root ur phone n install xposed on it ... Rooted S6 stock rom is now compatible with xposed its better than any custom roms out there

In my case, I only need temporary root. After that it maybe removed. So it would be nice to be able keep knox from being tripped if possible. Installing twrp is an additional step too that I would like to avoid again because it would serve no purpose since root would only be temporary. I also wanted to be sure that build G920PVPU3CPD3 could be rooted. Thanks for your input guys.
