[Q] just received replacement S4.. questions regarding knox

Phone was lost, just got replacement this morning.
My last S4 had been rooted running custom firmware for months w/o issue.
Read through a bunch of threads, ranging from the opinion that the bootloader change + knox wont be a big issue to the sky is falling.
Is it recommended to root my phone at this time, I do have JUMP and would be replacing it once something better comes out? The phone is running 4.2.2, caught it trying to update to already.
Thanks.. I know this may seem redundant but haven't been active on these boards since I got my CFW going. Not seeking help in flashing or anything.. just advice

Up to you. If the stock rom is bearable and you wanna run the 4.3 stock rom then by all means, go for it.

Being that your'e using the T-Mobile M919, the whole KNOX bootloader situation doesn't pertain to you as long as you're sure you're on 4.2.2. Root it, flash it, theme it with Hello Kitty... whatever, it doesn't matter; you can still revert back to stock and reset any tripped counters. 4.3 is when the problems begin and the KNOX counter is implemented and can't be reset.

I second this.
SO LONG AS YOU ARE ON 4.2.2
- You can root flash do whatever, theme with hello kitty or barbie xD like lordcheeto said or keep it stock
- Install recovery and flash away.
- Will always be able to revert back to 100 percent stock
TAKE 4.3 UPDATE
- I think you are still able to root it without tripping knox counter. Can't remember the last status of that was. But as long as you root it without a custom recovery, i think you are ok. From what i can remember, the bootloader checks the recovery status and trips the knox counter based off the recovery that is on the device. If its different then stock, it trips. But double check with Google about this first.
- If you trip knox counter, you will NEVER (as of now and possibly forever) get it back to zero.

Rooting with safe root won't trip knox and also disables it. But recoveries, kernels, roms, etc will trip the flag

Root it with chain fire and never look back.
You're on 4.22, so you're golden. Just flash a rooted stock ROM that's on 4.3 and you'll avoid Knox.
I'm running 4.4.2 and never seen this Knox stuff.

Correct. I've rooted my my second GS4G on 4.3 MK2 and it did not trip the KNOX counter. If you're still on 4.2.2 MDL, then there is no need to update your bootloader. Simply flash ROMs through recovery and flash the 4.3 modem. You will have the goodness of 4.3 on KNOX-less 4.2.2 bootloader. :highfive:

New Phone has root, don't want root

I got my Galaxy s4 as an insurance replacement from eSecuritel. Originally I had the S3 from my carrier and it didn't have this issue. I found out the phone had root from a backup app I had that detected it. I downloaded a root checker and verified I have root access. I had an issue with the phone and was told to go into recovery mode. There I found the original recovery mode had been replaced by one from Team Win, so I think I have a custom rom too? My backup app won't work because I must be missing something that didn't get put on from whoever did this. Mybackup pro is what I use. It won't reinstall my apps. Long story.
Basically I want to unroot and go back to a stock rom. I don't do this often enough to completely know what I am doing. I have rooted a phone before. My acer iconia tablet is rooted and has a custom rom. When I do this I will lose my ability to back up app data with mybackup pro. But samsung will support my phone.
The odd thing is, this happened with two different brand new, unopened Galaxy S4s. How can this be? Does the insurance company get them from some strange manufacturing facility? I chatted with Samsung and the representative knows nothing about Samsung doing this.

Download stock 4.3 firmware and then flash through Odin. That'll get you back to fully stock

Yeah it's no big deal . Like the other person said, just flash back to stock using odin. Here's a link to the stock ROM if you haven't done it already. Just search stock galaxy s4 rom on google and it should be on the galaxyroot page

If you are on 4.2.2 or (anything below 4.3), if you want completely stock, get TriangleAway to remove the flash counter (i.e., how many times the phone has had a custom rom flashed), then Odin flash the stock. This will show that you never touched your phone and it will be completely factory new. :good: But if you don't care about the flash counter (because your warranty is up or something), then you can just Odin flash the stock firmware and be good to go. :highfive:

I was just reading about the flash counter before I saw this reply. I do care because my phone was brand new when I received it a few days ago. I don't know how the heck I can have a brand new phone that is already rooted with a possible custom rom. Until a few minutes ago, I didn't know Samsung had such a counter on devices now.
I am a bit of a noob still despite having a little experience with this. I don't know which is the best stock rom (I have found a few). I have downloaded Odin. I have no clue what TriangleAway is.
I have been in contact with the place I got my phone from to find out what the heck happened. I shouldn't have to go through all this for a brand new phone. I doubt they can replace it with one that hasn't had this happen because they wont know which boxes have the affected phones as the boxes are unopened.

I know there are guides for this. I found them, closed the stupid window and now I can't find them again. I tried going through my history but there is so much in there it is hard to find.

Phones do not come pre-rooted with modified roms from the manufacturer. Contact whoever you got it from and request for a refund or exchange. TriangleAway is a app by Chainfire that resets a counter. This counter was used by Samsung to see if you messed with your ROM. Every time you flashed a ROM, your counter would go up by one. So if you flashed 4 roms, your counter will say "Flash counter: 4." TriangleAway resets that 0 so no one knows.
As far as best stock rom... well, they are stock. What do you mean best? lol. If you want 100% stock rom, then that is what you get. There are no variations. We can start talking about "best" only when you download ROMs that are modified by devs.

Jeez I feel dumb. I got Triangle Away. It asked me if I wanted to grant it rights because I don't have super user access. I tapped ok and it closed.

Then why does my backup pro and root checkers say I do? And why is there a team win custom recovery mode when I restart in recovery mode? I don't know if it matters but I can also go into download mode.

You have a custom recovery (TWRP). You probably have root (which has nothing to do with recovery) but you didn't give TA access.

[Q] Newbie With Questions Rooting T-Mobile Samsung Note 3

Hello,
I'm new to this whole rooting thing (I need to root my device for a couple of apps from the Google Play store) and I've been reading all the forums and I'm scratching my head going over all the information and I want to make sure I get it right so I don't brick my phone. Here is my situation:
- I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900T) on T-Mobile USA which was purchased October 2013
- This phone is stock from T-Mobile and has never had any type of mods, etc done to it
- 2 days ago, I upgraded the software OTA to KitKat 4.4.2
- I do NOT have the 'multitouch' issue as described in some of the forums
All I want to do at the end of the day is root my phone, without damaging it - preferably without tripping KNOX either (if possible).
It is confusing to me which thread to follow. I see links / instructions for CF-Root, CF-Auto-Root, Root De La Vega, etc are from October 2013 (not sure if this latest OTA update changes the steps) and I don't know which one to use without damaging my phone. I have the AP, CP, CSC information if this helps. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Follow this exactly from step 4 (since you already have 4.4.2), and you will have no issues. All root methods as of now trip KNOX, so if you really don't want to do that, don't root.

Thanks for this! Will this erase my phone back to defaults? Do I need to backup my phone prior to rooting it?

Everything will stay as is. None of the steps does a factory reset. All that will happen is you gain root, and will be able to use the SD card like you did on 4.3. As far as a back up goes I don't think you can on stock. You need the custom recovery which this will give you. Then you can do that if you want.

Just some tips if you haven't used ODIN before, or used custom recoveries. When it does its thing, and reboots, make sure ODIN says PASS before disconnecting or shutting off. It's not in the instructions since those doing this know this, but just giving a heads up. Also on the last step after flashing the SD card fix it says to back out until you see REBOOT. When you do that you have two options. You want to press the option 1. NO, and not 2. Reset/stop custom recovery. Again it's not in the post, but you want to keep the custom recovery active, so always select NO.

Now that I have rooted my phone, I need to read up on what else I can do besides use apps from the Google Play that require root access, e.g. removing bloatware and using my phone as an Access Point.

Good to hear. One of my first apps I install is AdAway. It's not in the Play Store because Google bans all ad-blockers. If you hate ads (like me) this is a must have. If you want to try it here is the link. After you install it, and open it for the first time to install the hosts, you may be prompted to do a symlink. This is normal. Just press yes. Enjoy your root!

Good morning all, since my post above back in March, my rooted Note 3 has worked great. Today, when I connected my phone to Kies3, I see that there is an available firmware update from:
PDA:NB4 / PHONE:NB4 / CSC:NB4 (TMB)
to
PDA:NE6 / PHONE:NE6 / CSC:NE6 (TMB)
Are there any precautions I need to take if I want to upgrade to the latest firmware using Kies3 if my phone is rooted using the above procedure?

Not sure if Kies will let you update firmware as you are rooted.
You can update to the NE6 Firmware by using Odin.
Find firmware either in this forum or elsewhere and flash away.
There was a good thread here on the Tmobile GN3 Forum with dl links, and steps.

Yes there is, when you Odin, make sure you are on stock kernel, and then before you go into Odin go ahead and run triangle away, then boot into download mode. Just seems some people have had issues getting modem to flash, and getting boot loader to flash. Other than that you will have no issues. Thanks man.

2. What is the best and safest way to root?

Ok, First, for the p600 if you root, you will trip Knox which will void your warranty and there is no way around this and this is the only way to root your model (p600), If you don't care about warranty then continue...
1) Download this file https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11938873/CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.zip then unzip, you will see this file CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5.
2) Turn Off Tablet, Hold Volume Down + Power. Follow the instructions on the screen to get to download mode (Odin mode).
Rooting Instructions
1.Flash the CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5 file with Odin v3.09 (put in AP slot, don't change any other settings, click start)
2.Let it do its trick! boot up then go to play store download and install supersu in order to update supersu to the latest binary.

Knox is just a shortcut to the install link, Does this mean it's not installed or is the shortcut just extras (I don't know how to post screenshots).

I don't understand what you are saying???
When I said tripped Knox void warranty is that your device detected that you installed unauthorized software which tripped the knox counter. You can see this by boot into download mode (Odin mode) and you should see a line like this:
Warranty bit: 1 (factory is 0x0)

ok, now i'm getting confused.
my p600 is still on 4.3 jellybean. but from what i read, as long as did not update to kitkat firmware, i can still unroot and reverse the warranty bit bcoz they don't have knox yet. but it'll be too late if i updated to kikat right? btw, i used cf-auto-root.
just weeks ago i rooted my p600 and flashed stock recovery, so now my p600 thinks its stock official firmware, even say so in about device.
i haven't tried unrooting it yet to confirm that i can get warrenty back by flashing back whole stock firmware bcoz i don't want to redo all settings again. but thats the impression i'm geting.
anyhow if i can't really reverse that warranty thing i don't really care anyways. i warranty my stuff better than they do it, and since i think i can still get updates, it bothers me even less if its unreversible. but in the case if i'm right, and i can reverse that warranty bit. maybe one day i'd like to update to kitkat. then what? i'll have to have knox in my system and i can't reverse warranty counter anymore?
is there a way i can update to a custom kikat firmware (one day) and not have knox so i'll still be able to get warranty back?
i kind of realized the dilemma i have here since if i own the device for more than a yr, my warranty wouldn't matter anymore. am i just thinking too much and worrying myself?

Yes you're confused!!. Knox has nothing to do with warranty bit, once this tripped, you can't undo doesn't matter you on 4.3 or 4.4.

I'm a little confused on a few other issues. I have read over 40 pages on another thread here about rooting etc and I couldn't find the answer to a few questions. I've just successfully rooted using the most recent instructions (P600 - CF Auto root) but in earlier instructions (about a year ago) you had to also install the stock recovery file using Odin. Is that a necessary step? Is it needed for OTA updates? Since I've read that OTA updates will unroot and possibly prevent you from rooting at all, is it best to just forget about OTAs and flash up to date files from this site? Is it also prudent to turn off auto updating in the settings.
If I'm not installing custom roms and backed up using Titanium Pro do I really need to install TWRP? Any other benefits other than nandroid? Thanks

Once you rooted you can't use OTA update any more. So the easiest going forward is to flash TWRP and use it to flash pre-rooted rom from this site.

I guess I'm installing TWRP tonight. There are many versions up to 2.8 I think. Which one do you recommend for P600? I've tried searching for "installing TWRP" but there were no obvious hits like there were for rooting. Which is the key thread?
To my first question, I'm assuming that the later root methods automatically installs or leaves the stock recovery as earlier methods needed to load it. Am I right?

OK found the thread and I just read the last 55 pages (that took a while) and boy is it scary. So many problems. Touch not accurate, inverted screens, certain versions failing eg 2.7, can't access external SD card, continual looping, booting into the old recovery , OTG cables not working, time zones can't be set properly, some say turn off autoboot in odin and some say don't change default settings etc etc. the list goes on and on. I likened it to a bushfire or tornado. Some houses still stand and some don't and you want to know the silly thing here, I am an experienced computer teacher with a degree in computer science and I've upgraded firmware on over a hundred devices over the years and yet all this rooting and recovery stuff is another world. The rooting process, admittedly, was a piece of cake and the instructions for flashing TWRP seems easy too but after that there seems to be so many problems. So hit and miss.
All i want to do is load TWRP on a P600. I will only load custom ROMs when a new firmware version comes out. Can someone alleviate my fears who has successfully loaded TWRP recently on a P600 using ODIN without massive tweaking to get it going. What version TWRP did you use and did you turn off autoboot or not?
PS Have I posted this in the correct section?

Took the plunge and loaded the latest TWRP 2.8.1 and it worked perfectly except I could only back to the main SD storage and not my extSD. I ended up, as a work around, moving the backup files to the extSD drive and PC.
I think I was worried unnecessarily.

[Q] No root with ANK1 - is it safe to rollback to previous firmware?

I'm just wondering if it's safe to rollback the firmware on my Galaxy Tab S 10.5" to the previous one or if it causes some sort of conflict.
I want to do so because I've just installed the most recent one (T800ODD1ANK1 - India) and I can't root it using Cf-Autoroot posted here.

Nothing. I did it with Odin and it just reboots to the same old unrooted tablet. All is working fine as usual, but no root.

What botters me the most is that I had Xposed framework installed but now it has no functionality and all the modules I had installed don't work. I would install the previous firmware but I'm afraid of breaking something, with installing older software on top of newer one.

I was able to root the US version of that ROM (T800XXU1ANK1) using CF Auto Root from Chainfire:

Perhaps give that a shot???

I will but the India version has a more recent changelist (which was the reason why I chose to install it).

As I predicted, since the changelist is different (your version has the same as the older one I had, with functioning root, but not with this one), no root.
Does anyone know if it is safe to install a previous version of the software? Like, for example, Cellular South ANK1 (with an older changelist).

I'm having the same issue as the original poster. It says I am rooted, but I'm not because root checker just keeps spinning and there isn't a SU# icon in my apps. I've done this with Odin about a million times before, for some reason on my new T800 (after I updated the software), it doesn't work.
Am I missing a step because I have the same version you have? Extract the file. Load the md5 file into AP. Hit Start. Wait for it to reboot. Right?
Yea root isn't working for me with T800XXU1ANK1. =(

Im assuming you ran Super SU and updated the binaries or whatever it asks, or updated the app in playstore?
Ive done nothing different and root works fine.

I was thinking about another root alternative. I was thinking about downloading the supersu zip and save it to the device or sd card. Then flash twrp recovery with odin, then boot into recovery and flash the supersu zip to get root? Could that work as an alternative since it flashes root in the process?

I just bought a Tab S, and I can't seem to find an answer to a question that relates to this thread. Is there any advantage to updating before rooting?
I can't decide if I should root it now or update the software, and then root. After searching some, it appears that it doesn't matter whether I upgrade or not, but I can't seem to find if there is any advantage to updating it then rooting. Like, is it easier to get the latest firmware that way?

If i am correct, There should be stock custom roms available that are prerooted so you can flash over. As for an ota update, that is faster than being rooted then flashing lollipop rom.
Anyway we have a lollipop rom already built. Its smooth and most things are working. Its really cool and id rather use this than waiting for samsung to get the latest update out. Do you have the 10.5 in or 8.4 inch?

I have the wifi 10.5 inch.
So, you are saying update OTA then root, unless I want to jump to Lollipop (which I do), which in that case it doesn't matter so I should just root and flash a lollipop rom?

Up to you If you want to jump to lollipop/CM12, just run flash Cfautoroot( with odin to root) then install twrp and flash the lollipop rom. There is a thread for cm12/lollipop in the development tab s section.
But wait! Rooting trips knox with voids your warranty. Same users has reported getting service from samsung for free of charge from defective units and some had to pay to get defective parts replaced by samsung. 50/50 chance. I took the risk and havent got a hardbrick or anything yet.

Thank you for the heads-up. I've rooted all 6 of my android phones that I've had, so I'm not too worried about voiding the watrranty. Judging by your reply it sounds like there are a lot of lemons out there for this device. Mine seems to be running okay, but I just can't take all the lag that I assume comes from TW and bloatware. My HTC One M8 with Lollipop seems faster and smoother than my Tab S at stock. Although after typing the last sentence, I put Nova on there and sped up all the animations and it is definitely light years faster than my One M8 now.

I think the answer to the original post is that the Su binary was installed, but the op didn't download then update Super su after rooting. You wont get full root until you do as there is no app to handle root requests.
