[Q] jailbreaking the windows surface rt - Windows RT General

Hello everyone I am new to xda and the surface rt and I have been wanting to install more app that what the app store offers. I have done jealbreaking/rooting before but am unsure of the surface jailbreak. Has anyone done it and has it worked. Also what are the pros and cons of the jailbreak.
Thanks.

Many have done it and the only downside is that the current jailbreak have to wait for the windows uptime to reach 2 minutes before it actually does anything.
The jailbreak lets you run non-Microsoft signed exe files in the desktop environment like those found here: Desktop Apps ported to Windows RT
7zip, Audacity, SciTE, OpenTTD is just a few listed there that we can use after running the jailbreak

can't jailbreak windows rt on samsung ativ tab

Hi all,
I ended up downloading all the versions of the RT Jailbreak tool but still haven't succeeded to jailbreak windows RT on my Samsung Ativ Tab.
Any idea what could be the problem?
When I press volume down, it crashes and displays the blue screen with the REFERENCE_BY_POINTER error.
I installed all the updates, gave it about one to two minutes each time I ran it but still couldn't jailbreak.
I even restored the tab to factory settings but the jailbreak tool still fails.
Anyone who has done it on the ativ tab?

Jailbreak? Do you mean trying to get past the required purchase of Windows? That sort of thing is not allowed on this site.
What exactly is "jailbreak" for an RT?

No, it's not that at all.
It's a way to allow for running programs compiled for ARM that are not signed by Microsoft directly. Without a jailbreak, you can only run apps that have the Microsoft signing.
There's a big thread about the jailbreak, and then apps that have been recompiled but aren't signed by MS so they require the jailbreak to run.

OP should ask in the RT jailbreak thread.

I have a Samsung ATIV Tablet and AFAIK, all ATIV tabs run the Intel Clovertrail - that is an x86 machine - is the OP sure that he even has RT. ATIV comes with Windows 8

There are some that run RT. I think the Tab's are the ones that run RT, the ATIV Smart are the ones that run x86.

[Q] Windows 8 apps compatibility

I'm a newbee to RT, so please forgive me if this has been asked/answered elsewhere.
I thought that if a developer writes a metro app for Windows 8 it will automatically run on both Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT. I found a situation where this may not be true.
I just picked up a Dell XPS 10 after using Windows 8 on my desktop and a Lenovo Twist. On my Twist and desktop I've been running an app called "Trackage." I like it and wanted to try it on the XPS 10, but a search for the name does not return it as available on RT.
Is there a reason for this? Can someone explain for me?
Thanks in advance,
Rich
Although the vast majority of metro apps will run fine on both systems, the developer does maintain the ability to restrict an app from one platform or another for whatever reason.
It is entirely possible that the trackage developer has deliberately made his/her app unavailable on Windows RT.
There are very few reasons for doing that on metro apps, but clearly its occurred sadly.
I would see if you can find the website for the app and make a feature request.
Thank you very much. That was very helpful!
RT runs on ARM processors, which execute different code than the x86 processors used for traditional Windows systems. Many Metro apps are architecture-independent, meaning they are written in a language that is higher-level than actual machine code and are converted to machine code for whatever CPU they are on when you first run them. However, some Metro apps are written in C/C++, which compiles directly to machine code. Although it is possible to make it compile to ARM in most cases, such apps are not automatically supported on ARM the way other apps are.
some apps cannot run on RT and only on win8

Dual boot windows ce to enjoy all windows application ?

Hi all
I heard about windows rt and windows 8 on tablets and phones.
My goal is to find a way (if there's one) to enjoy windows app, games (oldest ones) and compatibility (on my tab s if available).
Windows 8 cannot be on arm so I forgot him.
After I heard about windows rt. The problems are : 1 you can only have the os when you have the machine sold with 2: you can only install apps from the store so the compatibility is broken.
Finally I heard about windows ce who can be on arm if you buy the licence. I searched but I doesn't found any 'windows store' or incompatibility
with .exe. (most people are using on x86 devices )
Thanks for answers and if windows ce cannot be used like a native windows I would be happy to know why (Im pretty sure It can't but i hope)

Do you have any idea how limited Windows CE is? It cannot run ANYTHING at all.
you can also install win 95 or xp
if only we could have Vista
anyway this stuff almost always requires root and kernel tweaks etc.. also the OS you want to run has to have been made to run on our architecture at some point or you have to run it inside a VM.
i have done a bunch with Linux distros over the years and those are much easier than Windows and still it has never developed to be enjoyable to use.
best option is to find an app that does what you liked in Windows since you should find most things these days.

Installing Neverware/CloudReady Chrome OS on Surface RT

If you guys haven't heart about it: neverware.com
I have already installed it on old laptops. I wonder if I can do the same for the Surface RT? Is it possible through hacking, etc.?

Only if it has support for ARM. We don't even have secure boot unlocked yet, so this isn't even close to possible until then. why don't you work on getting the secure boot unlocked? or work on porting apps to RT 8.1

Windows 10 iot working on Windows RT
I was doing some searching the other day and came across a post on twitter where someone has managed to install Windows 10 iot for the Raspberry PI onto a Windows RT. Not sure if this is old news but, was thinking this could open some doors for progression on a fully working windows 10 rom.

Try the Windows_RT_8.1_Development_Tool_V2.0 you can find it around here
You can factory reset to unpatch your tablet. I used UMCI disable tool from RoL and it worked for me.
