[Q] How Fast is Fox FI? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I still have my trusty Note 2 (4.1.2) with wifi tether working just fine. But it is starting to show it's age a bit. Since there is no (perm) root for the note 4 how fast is Fox Fi? Does it work just like old school wifi tether? I generally can pull anywhere from 50-8 on download speeds.

I use foxfi on my Note 4. Speedwise it works fine. It's just limited to your connection speed. Sometimes I get 1mp,sometimes I get 30mp, just depends where I am and how many other users on my same tower.

Wireless Tether Speed Slow versus 4g Speed on Phone?

Hello,
I tried seraching for this issue and could not find any help in the topics
My phone via 4g get's about 3-5mbps when I run speedtest on the evo...
I start wireless tether and the fastest speed I can get via my laptop is .5-.7mbps.
I updated my wireless driver to allow maxium power and that has allowed the speed to stay consitant between the .5-.7mbps.
Any ideas/help on how I can get my wireless tether speed to match closer to the 4g speed the phone gets? I understand there would be some loss in speed using the Evo as a hotspot but is a full 2-4mbps loss in speed normal?
Any tips or help is greatly appreciated
Mine does the same thing. Not sure why but I suspect it is something to do with the app.
If u using the free one it cap to 400kb if its sprint version it only works better on windows 7 so far my xp not getting those full speeds
EVIL PHONE
Yah, it really depends on what wifi tether your using. I use the updated google one, and watch hulu in dtown DC (4G) Conn ave. & K St. area; and get 3-4 mbps on the regular using the tether. I don't think the bluetooth connection would be quicker, but would definately conserve battery. SO which TETHER are you using?
I'm using the latest and greatest from google (pre3).
On my phone I easily get ~3-5mbps but in tether it drops drastically.
Just curious what ROM are you using?
definately capped
I just noticed this after flashing a rooted 2.2 rom. When I was using the google tether app on 2.1 Eclair Roms, I was easily getting 299 - 699 Kb/s download speeds using a bit torrent to download music, videos and what not; on the 3G networks, and 1.5 Mb/s - 3Mb/s on the 4G. Now with froyo, my tethering is capped at at about 50 Kb/s on 3G and about 200 Kb/s on 4G. I think it's definately something caused by Froyo, because apparently carriers can choose whether or not to allow tethering for free in this rom, which makes me believe that they can choose whether or not to cap the speed on connection sharing. Now when I download something directly from the phone, the speeds on the 3G and 4G are around the speeds I was getting with 2.1 . I'm going to try wiping and flashing back to a 2.1 rom; keeping my fingers crossed and seeing if this is in fact the case.
I also get slower 3G type speeds while wifitethering using pre7 or 8. On the phone I can get 4Mbps, but on the ipad/computer I get 700Kbps, and I cant really seem to figure out why.
Running DC3.5 with latest radios. Anyone else have any luck with this?
Did you try unlocking the N wifi on the phone? That might help cuz the phone come stock with G

Well technically G should be able to handle 11Mbps although in real life it should get at least 3 or 4. My friend was tethering around 2Mbps on eclair, but he seems limited as well. I am tempted to buy a month of Sprint to see what kind of tethered speeds I will get via sprint hotspot (but I doubt it hehe)

Use CM6 RC2 before you drop 30 bucks for something you dont need. CM6 can be a hotspot without paying 30 bucks but on the flipside CM6 cant use 4G
Dont get me wrong, I can tether. My speeds tethered are faster when I am on 3G as opposed to 4G though.
using the "wireless tether" app from the market on eclair I was getting about 2-5 mBps download and 600-800 mbps upload.
Now, on 2.2 I'm getting 3kB download and 9kB upload. I'd like to figure out how to get back the higher speeds I had with eclair.
Possible the google tether app...???
I figure I'll throw my name in here too. Wireless tether worked great when I was on 2.1, I was getting like 6mbps speeds over 4G when tethered to my laptop. I updated to 2.2 (with a full wipe of everything, then install SteelH's 2.2 De-odexed REV E.1 ROM) and installed Wireless Tether pre8, it works but I only get like .2mbps download speeds, regardless of 3G or 4G.
I tried Wireless Tether pre7 and pre8, neither seem to do the trick. Anyone figured this out yet? Alternatively, can anyone using a similar ROM confirm it is working at full speed for them?
Okay, I seemed to find the problem fix for me. I needed to clear the Dalvik Cache. Now I'm getting regular speeds over 4G.
I thought I was clearing the Dalvik Cache, but I was just clearing the... uhh... "regular" cache. Dalvik is under the advanced menu in Clockwork Recovery...
Delvik cache?
So, I used unrevoked3.2 that includes clockwork. To access I turn on phone while holding volume down? Then what? I'd like streaming speed over tether as well.

[Q] Using the Verizon Nexus to tether.

Has anyone used their VZN Gnex to tether to their laptop? I was just curious to how well it worked, if the phone got super hot, etc. Is it worth getting? Just explain your opinion on Gnex tethering if you will. Thanks
I should also add that I will be using the VZN mobile hotspot data package.
I have used my Gnex to tether my laptop and my friends laptops (Macs and PCs). The speed is okay. I did a speedtest.net run on it and it was around 10mbps, about the speed of any average, home wifi connection (4g). It drains the battery fairly quickly in my opinion, so only if I am without Wifi and I need to use the computer that absolutely required data connection (that my phone couldn't do), I would use it in that situation. Otherwise I would just always use wifi if I needed to use my computer. There is no problems with it though. The phone doesn't get hot, slow or buggy.I would say if you're in areas where you'd like to use your computer, but don't have wifi regularly, then get it. If not, just carry your phone around with you and use that, it's a mini laptop!
Well, getting back into school and my job requiring me to travel a lot, I planned on doing most of my classes online. Everywhere we go, i have great signal and hopefully this will be my solution to getting my coursework done before I get home. Thanks.
While not the CDMA version, I have used my GN for this and it worked flawlessly with my Wi-Fi-only tablet.
I appreciate the input so far. Anyone that reads this, I ask to write your opinion and experience using your GNex has a mobile hot spot. Preferably the CDMA version. Thanks again.

I've used my VZW nexus to tether (using Android Wifi Tether app) occasionally, mostly using 3G, and it works like a charm.
I use it almost daily with no issues. Speeds rival what I get on the handset, but I'm also running a custom ROM and not paying to use Verizon's Hotspot Service.
I use roughly 10 gigs a month, half of it is via tether. I don't have issues with heat. I will say that if you're using WiFi Tether on LTE and having a phone conversation on a BT headset, the charger can't keep up with power consumption. Small price to pay for awesomeness.
Thanks for the input so much guys! So far nothing negative. I'll definitely have to put this to use then!

[Q] Tablet: Wifi or Carrier?

If you plan to get a tablet, would you get one with a cellular network, or one only suited for wifi?
I think it sounds silly to spend cash for a 'tablet line', but to each their own.
Stories/experiences welcome.
I bought the tab 10.1 wifi only... if I am ever without wifi access (which is rare) I just use my nexus to wifi tether.. saves money and works great

Ditto
Wifi, if you ever need data access just tether

i thought the same initially, get a wifi tablet and tether to phone if needed
BUT wifi tether sucks up too much phone battery - and it's such a shame to have an awesome device that you can't use properly
i ended up replacing my TF101 (which was too big for me anyway) with a 3G 7" and got a $5 for 500MB per month sim
I'd rather have my balls chopped off than to buy a carrier tablet. I can see the usefulness for some people that need to be connected all the time but it's just not for me.
I have the GT 10.1 wifi only. I usually have it tethered to my phone. Root > WiFi tether app > win. Screw Verizon, they take a lot of money as it is from me per month. Not giving them extra to add my tablet. Just thank god I still have my unlimited data plan. Cause 4G eats up data like a fat man in a donut shop. I hit 15GB usage the other month.
I bought a unlocked t-mobile galaxy tab 7. rooted and running cm7. i pop in my 30 buck a month prepaid t-mobile sim card when i need to.. works out. but would never sign a contract for a tablet. etc..

agreed...fortunately i don't live in a place where carriers control technology...and also, i don't have gonads
Glad that everyone has reached a consensus. Also, can you use USB tether?
I have the 64GB 3rd generation wifi only iPad and I manage fine tethering when I need it. Even if tethering sucked as bad as some people claim, 500Mb is nowhere being enough data for a tablet.

I tether my WiFi tab using AOKPs built in tethering. I get about 20 mb/s on average over my 4G connection.
My wife even used it when she was out to watch her slingbox with no issues. used about 15GB in 3 days...LOL...gotta love that unlimited..uncapped...4G data.

Tether extremely slow

Hi , When I try to tether my galaxy note 2 (unlocked, international version, bought without contract, stock rooted rom), the speed is extremely slow , it is nearly like a crawl in comparison to the mobile speed. I tried both USB and Wifi so far . Would the provider have a way to detect that I am tethering and thus cap my data? or otherwise what happened? and how I can speed up the connection?
Yes they can detect.

[Q] lte vs wifi only

Im leaning towards the 8.4 version, since i think the 10.5 and 8.4 all have the same processors. Im trying to decide between lte and wifi only based on two factors : performance and lte usability.
i did some research but i cant seem to find a consensus on which processor is better, the wifi only exynos or the lte qualcomm.
I have at&t and i get free hotspot on my phone. I also have a big discount so an lte tablet would only be 5 dollars a month on my plan, but of course the lte tablet costs more. Will there be an internet speed performance difference in using a tablet with built in lte vs just using wifi off of my samsung note edge? I know lte gets up to 50mbps, so what quality connection do i get on wifi when using an lte smartphone as my source? Would both connections give me identical lte performance? Im just trying to figure out if there is a point at all in paying those 5 dollars a month.
thanks all for your help.
Well I do know that WiFi on the tab s can pick up WiFi signals that are very far. I have the wifi T800 and sometimes use my computer hotspot and it works fine. I haven't tryed it on a phone though but I have not seen any speed differences on my network and its always a steady 2mbps ( how fast my WiFi is lol). The exynos chipset on the WiFi tab s lags here and there but not much. I haven't seem much snapdragon or anything else but that might be better then exynos.
To answer your questions and make things easy here.
As from my experience there's no speed performance difference in using a tablet with late or WiFi coming from an hotspot. So what ever speed is putting out is mostly the same with the tab s.
Depending on lte speeds, it may be slow or fast depending on where you go. But 10 Mbps should be fine if the speeds are somewhat slow. But idk if your plan is unlimited data, so using hotspots will use a lot of data when using a hotspot.
You can try the WiFi one first and maybe (not sure) if of doesn't work out for you.
All the best!
my plan isnt unlimited. Are you saying that the tablet will use more data out of my plan while piggybacking off of a hotspot than having its own lte connection?

From my guess, I think hotspots will use more data since a device is connected and the phone is feeding out internet/WiFi to the tab s with it being connected. From what I heard hotspots use more data vs an lte itself. That's my best guess and hope this helps! How much data does 5 bucks a month get you?
^^^^ hes correct. Hotspots or any kind of tethering use a ton of data. More so then LTE. Without a unlimited plan I wouldn't recommend it as your going to hit your data cap quite fast.
