[Q] Please Help with ROM Install!! - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a Samsung Galaxy Note II from T-Mobile (SGH-T889). I have had it rooted for some time. I haven't been able to successfully flash a new rom onto it though. During the install process I get an error towards the end. Thus it never does a clean install of the ROM (generally goes into a boot loop). My main goal would be to have a clean, fast, functional rom with the ExtSD2InternalSD so I can get some more memory on my Note II. You use the Perseus Kernel to get functionality of the EXT2INT. Another issue that came up was the index of my Ext SD card itself. It took a lot of toying around just to get it to show up, but it changed it to EXTSD(0). Now when I want to get into my SD on my computer to back it up, non of the data is actually showing up on my computer.
So 2 main questions?
1. How do I get a clean install of a ROM? (I've followed using Clockwork Mod, deleting everything before flash etc.)
2. How can I change the index of my SD so it can show up on both my phone and PC with all the data that is there?
Sorry if my ?'s have been answered before, just new here and wanted to start out with a thread myself. Thanks!

killed ROM, Ok........ Lets start over again....

Here is what I did, and here is what I want to do(presumably)
What I did:
-Installed CWM, did all of the fancy backups, etc. Tried installin g CM7 and it failed, the zip from the CM site keeps failing to install (aborted)
-I then gave up on it and tried installing Eaglesblood ROM which did install correctly. I didn't know that it hasn't been used or updated for a while, but one issue came up.
--Issue: My SD card wouldn't mount(external)? I couldn't recover my contacts or apps that were backed up on my SD card, and searching for it just showed "unavailable" and no option top mount.
-After this failure, I decided to try the Juggernaut ROM and the install failed, because the SD card just wouldn't mount. Nothing on my SD card is usable.
NOW: I want to start over from scratch, and then install a ROM, or just completely delete everything. I don't even want any of the backups on my phone, just a fresh start over again.
Question: What should I do? What would you do as a Noob if you could do it over again the right way?
1.) Clear the phone back to stock again?
2.) Install something more stable?
3.) Find a way to mount SD?
what do I do?!
ps. Merry Xmas
Try formatting the sdcard and see if that makes a difference. I had a sdcard go bad in my wife's phone and it wouldn't mount at all. Swapped in another card and she was golden.

doesn't give me the option to do so on my phone. I'll do it on my backup phone and see if it works.
No Go, it reformatted in the other phone, but amazingly all of the files were still there?
Someone help me solve this mystery, this isn't making sense?!
Try formatting on a computer not a phone if you have a card reader. Go to my computer right click on the sdcard and select format. Then select fat32 option. Back up your stuff if it still reads on the computer. If this doesn't fix try a new sdcard. That's what I had to do for my wife's phone. It wouldn't mount in the phone but worked.fine in a card reader.

I tried putting it in my nokia N900, and reformat it from the PC using the N900 as a reader. Unfortunately I don't know where my adapter is.
It wont format that way, it lets me see the SD card and select format, but no go. Tried Fat32 and NTFS, but no format would work.
Possible that the card is fried some how, but still readable? The properties show no information on if the SD card is on read-only or not, so I can't figure this out.
Formating it from the N900 says it formats, but all the files are still there after the format.
Mind=Blown
Well it looks like it was the sd card afterall, new card and everything works...... For now of course.

best way to start over from scratch is to ODIN the factory ROM, (check INDEX sticky)
then you'll be back to original, and use oneclickroot to root it again, then install CWR and go wild with whatever ROM you choose

In order to prevent bad installations in the future, only attempt to flash roms that you obtained from the Developer section of the T-Mobile Galaxy SII T-989 forum. Our phone will not run roms developed for other versions of the Galaxy SII due to hardware differences. You could easily brick your phone flashing something that wasn't specifically designed for it.

Ok well I think I started from scratch again when I updated my firmware using Kies. I lost SU and Root access.

Got it, but I tried it both ways. I think what I really should be asking is:
What roms would you download if this were you?
I really want something in the ICS department but can't really find any roms that are stable enough to download. Anything you recommend?
there are no ICS alpha/beta for our model yet
wait until the ICS sources has dropped from Samsung, then we'll get lots

well, ICS isn't really a big deal. I just want to try out these ROMs everyone is raving about, but there are so many!
Like I said before, I tried installing a rom that just didn't work. And I'd like to try some of the most stable roms out and see which ones I could use comfortably.
This way I don't set up my phone the way I like, just to do it all over again repeatedly.
edit: I see you're running Juggernaut 3.7 + Bullet 2.9 (just like CM7)
Stable enough to try in my n00b state? I understand the risks as well, just wondering how good it is. I know it had some MMS issues but if that's all than I'll survive.
Edit 2: Just installed Jug v4.1 and it's awesome. So I finally got the idea of what I need to do in order to install correctly. Not going to try anything else for a while now lol
I think you're getting confused... there are a lot of variants of the Samsung Galaxy S II, but they are very different inside. It sounds like the ROM you were trying to install was for the international version, which could easily wreck your phone completely. There are no ICS roms whatsoever for the T-Mobile version of this phone, nor are there any complete CM7 roms. You can safely install any of the roms on the "T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II Android Development" section of these forums, and that's about it.

Right, which is what I was aware of. The rom that messed me up was one that was labeled as a Tmobile S2 rom, but I think the error was a User error(me).
Now that I did it all from scratch, I have it all running well and I'm now avoiding the use of Rom Manager, and only using CWM.
And of course, I wouldn't think of installing a rom from another forum for another phone, I will be sticking to the t989 section here.

I'll look in to it. But it is more of a global phone problem almost like the phones cpu is going to "sleep" when doing processes.
ROM mannager wont finish fix permissions.
Titanium wont finish any processes longer that one or 2 apps at a time.
Sd maid wont finish scaning to clean apps, system, or chache.
ROM tool box half runs actions.
Even games, movies slow down and stop after about 15 min.
I can't multi-task at all.
I'm thinking the problem is some how linked to MIN frees.
I think phone is possibly changing them or build.prop, int or service.jar is corrupted some how.
do you have en ext micro sd card installed? have you ever tried another micro sd on it? you mentioned that you tried all other roms before, guess that's not a software problem. tried format every thing from scratch, make sure you format your emmc from recovery, use darkside super wide after it, and then flash a new rom. make backups before doing so. take off micro sd card from yr phone during the whole process and see how it goes.
always use odin to flash back stock rom, if problems persist, restore it back to unrooted stock rom, send back for service.
It's ALIVE!!!!!!!!!

[Q] Looking to do something to my Note II

I want to completely wipe my phone and act like it's stock. I've flashed rom after rom and I want a clean start. I'm finally happy with a setup I have and I want to start from square one. Wipe my SD card and my internal storage. How would I go about doing this? I tried searching but I didn't know if the methods posted would do what I want to do.

[Q] /Data partition possibly corrupt, Someone please help

In the past couple of weeks I had jedi 3.x rom installed on my i317 from att, with asylumcore kernel at 1.92ghz overclock and no fsync(). Had it fully themed from various theme mods around the forum and everything was running great till i found a AOSP lockscreen mod that i decided i really wanted to put on here. I flashed the mod and my phone would load up show the TW lockscreen for 1 second then reboot again over and over. I was stupid and did not make a backup before flashing the lockscreen. could not get phone to stop resetting w/o pulling battery. after flashing the new jedi rom and kernel my phone still continued to bootloop, but without ever getting to the bootanimation. I had a cm rom on the sd card that i kept to try on a "rainy day". after flashing that the phone was able to fully boot and was working but this rom is very buggy for me. i realized that i had forgot to format /data before or after flashing and thought this could be the issue. went into recovery and now every time i try to format it the recovery reboots. tried flashing teamwinrecovery and it only loads the splash image then a blank screen. So i went back into cm and used the app Rom Toolbox Pro to see if it could clear out all of /data, and mentioned that my version of cwm had to be done with rom manager but with the option to try anyway? i answered yes. phone booted into recovery and now automatically tries to clear /data but keeps rebooting and repeating the process. Now i can't flash anything becuase rom toolbox is automating the whole thing.
So I ask, does anyone please know of anyways that i can mount my phone to my computer for editing without being booted up into the rom or recovery? or is there a way to use Odin to somehow clear all the partitions so that i can start new?
Sorry for long post but right now my phone is a $650 brick.
U just answered ur own question.......odin bacjk to complete stock

I live outside of any major city and the only real internet i could get was through my phone via tethering. so i was on dialup to even write the previous post. But I went into town and borrowed the local restaurant's cable internet and downloaded the stock firmware and I believe everything is in working order

[Q] CyanogenMod 10.1.3 on Rogers not showing internal SDcard files?

Ok, so I'm attempting to go from stock to CM 10.1.3, but I'm running into an odd issue. Note - I'm not a newbie to installing ROMS, having done so with my old Captivate quite regularly, but I *am* a newbie to installing them on my S3.
So, the issue is this: I am rooted, CWM (6.0.3.7) is installed, I have everything backed up with the latest version of TitaniumBackup Pro, and had it create a zip file so I could install it from CWM after doing the CM install (and I do a Nandroid backup as well). I install CM 10.1.3, install GAPPS, and install TitaniumBackup from CWM. I boot up CM, load up TitaniumBackup (sometimes I have to boot into CM first, go through setup, and THEN reboot to Recovery in order to get TitaniumBackup installed properly), and TitaniumBackup can't see *any* of the files in my internal SD card. Then I check with the file browser, and sure enough, it can't see *any* of my pre-CM files either. All of the folders are there, (not just stock file folders, but ones that I've created) but it can't see any files within those folders. I also can't see any of the files when I browse through USB on my computer, but all the folders are there. Has anybody experienced something like this? Is there something really simple and stupid that I'm missing/should be checking for?
Here's my setup, pre-CM install:
Rogers Galaxy S3 (i747M)
Android 4.1.2
Baseband I747MVLDMF1
Build number JZO54K.I747MVLDMF1
I rooted and installed CWM via the method in this thread (though I got the AT&T s3 version of CWM directly from the CWM page instead of using either of the ones linked in that thread).
Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I'm tired of the stock JB that Rogers provides, and wanted to give CM a chance, but not being able to see any of the files on my SD card is frustrating me, and making me leery of keeping the install there. Worst case scenario, I can install it, format the internal SD card, and then copy everything back over from my computer via USB, but that is a REAL hassle and I'd still be left wondering if there was something else broken.
Thanks!
Also: I do a standard wipe/factory reset before installing CM. When I restore my Nandroid backup, all is back to normal. I *did* google to see if anybody else had the same problem, but my google fu has failed me. Umm, I can't think of any other pertinent information I could offer.

Perfect! I'll try that tonight. Thanks muchly! :good:
Upon further messing about, I've found that it's still a bit flaky/unreliable. Apps randomly crashing, files and folders inaccessible and/or not visible despite being in /data/media/0, etc etc. Decided just to go back to stock for now, I'll take another stab at it some other time.
