Hello,
I just got a nexus 7 2013 that had a busted screen. It still showed data between the huge shatter, and didn't respond to my attempts to unlock it by swiping. I assumed it was just a bad screen and bought a replacement and installed it today.
The display worked, but the touchscreen didn't seem to be responding to me trying to swipe to unlock. I eventually figured out that although I couldn't unlock it, the dialogue menus from long pressing the power button did work! Well, some, anyway. I can change sound modes, airplane mode, and access the power off dialogue, but am only able to select cancel from the two options, though ok is not grayed out. I can also click anywhere outside the dialogue and it will back out of it, leading me to assume that the screen's hardware is intact and functioning.
I then hard reset it via stock recovery and am now at the welcome screen prompting a language selection with the big right arrow, unable to press it but still able to interact with the power off and cancel options of the power menu.
Recovery says its running KOT49H.
I've used NRT to reflash the same build from a stock download, and I'm still stuck at the same spot.
What the heck can I do?

I would assume that the new digitizer is still bad. There are lots of them on sale on Ebay where the seller would assure the merchandise has been "tested" before shipping. In reality, they might not be. If you happen to have one with spotty functionality, there's nothing you can do with the software to cure it. It would not respond in some areas, period. If you only replace the digitizer instead of the whole LCD/touchscreen assembly, chances are you have a partially bad one. I've never come across one good one myself.

I just received my Z1C and I've been having lots of touch screen problems.
When I get to the unlock screen, a lot of times nothing will register on the touch screen. I have to push the power button to turn the screen on and off to get the touch screen to register, and a lot of the time I have to turn the screen on and off more than once to get it to work.
Another issue I'm having is in the settings menu. The top portion of the screen doesn't register any touches. For example, when I tap on the Wifi settings, nothing happens. I have to pull down the screen like half a centimeter, then tapping Wifi will work. This is so frustrating...
Is there any way to fix this without rooting, unlocking bootloaders, or installing a custom rom?

already tried a hard reset ?
Yes. I've done a factory reset, and nothing has changed. Nothing registers on the unlock screen when I touch it. I have to turn the screen on and off multiple times to get it to work.
I am using the free screen protector that came with the phone. I doubt that's the issue though.
This can't be normal. I'm thinking I just got a lemon...

if youre done a factory reset and the problem persist im pretty much sure its a hardware problem...
anyway, go to about -> diagnostic and make the touchscreen test.
any issues there?
if i were you, i would reinstall the firmware using SUS to be 100% sure its HW problem.
Already you try a hard reset. I think it is your harware problem. If you have a warranty you can go customer care. I am sure they solve your problems.
not working at all
Hi guys, my diplay is also down - broken - and i have a gesture lock on. I can not unlock the screen. How can I perform a hard reset without touching a display? I was searching whole internet for two days and nothing helped.
If I connect phone to the PC, it must be unlocked.
I need some files from internal storage :/
Hi,
I have a weird bug with the touchpad of my phone.
It stops working after unlocking the locked screen.
Ok, here is what happens:
I dropped my galaxy W on the road, then someone drove over it...
After this accident, the LCD screen as well as the glass broke but the phone could still start and was ringing when called.
I decided to take my chance and bought the parts to fix it. I have changed the digitizer and the LCD screen.
The phone boots just fine.
I am able to swipe to unlock the phone and access the home screen.
However, once I access the home screen, the touchpad doesn't respond anymore! Volume buttons, home button and power buttons are still working fine. Options and return button are not working too.
I am even able to access my missed calls from the locked screen if I press on the missed call button directly on the locked screen.
I have tried to access the recovery mode. By pressing volume up+home+power, I can access it, but I then need to press onto the "options" button which is not answering. I am stuck again.
I have also tried to access the downloading mode. I can access the "warming!" menu (with explainations about the dangers related to custom OS), but the phone stops answering after that. I press the volume button up or down nothing happens.
Is it a software issue or a hardware issue (related to the motherboard?)
Thanks for you help.

Phone arrive in mail yesterday. Charged phone fully. Turned phone on. Lots of voice activations on the set-up wizard screen. I try to pick a language from the drop-down screen and it just highlights it with green dashed lines and the voice activation says 'english'. That's it. I try to hit the next arrow for the next step and it keeps telling me the time. I mean I'm no expert by any means but I'm also no rookie when it comes to turning a phone on for the first time. This is really weird. I can't get past this screen. Tried fully shutdown and start back up. Same thing. Mind you I haven't put a sim card in yet but I didn't think that would matter as I was going to use wifi to set it up anyways. I can't even turn the phone off by touching on screen either. I have to long press the power button to turn it off as the touch screen doesn't seem to work. Anyone have issues with this? It's very disheartening coming straight out of the box...

I got past the screen but I had to 'double-tap' (and by double tap i mean like 4-5 taps sometimes) the next arrow. I have to do this at every screen until it gets to the log into gmail screen. I try to type my email in by double tapping each letter but this doesn't work. Now I have no idea what to do.
I had the same thing happen to me yesterday and figured it out.
If you have not figured it out let me know I can help.
mine arrived same problem

I'm having this same issue as you. Mine just arrived today. It seems likely they put a recent image on these that may have something missing off broken on it. The models before them seem to not have this problem. Worst is you can really fix it or get past it since its the initial setup. What to do now? Send it back?

TalkBack may be enabled. If this setting is enabled, there will be voice prompts to every action made. Also the touch screen may behave differently and appear to be defective. Instead of one tap to open an item it will require tapping once to highlight then double tap to open. Also when swiping it may require using two fingers instead of one. To disable go to Apps/Settings/Accessibility/Talkback - turn off.

Thanks! This worked. I found someone else online who had the same issue and that's exactly what happened to him. I just used 2 fingers to click through the setup wizard and then finally was able to go into settings and turn TalkBack off. This was very annoying right out of the package. Hope this helps someone else.
Could any of you please kindly send me a private message with the model, serial number, and if purchased in the USA? We are trying determine which units have been distributed with TalkBack feature enabled.

I had someone that had this happen at the Intel pre-Google IO event Wednesday night. If you don't want to go through the full setup -
1). Turn the phone off
2). Hold volume up + Power
3). Use the volume down button to highlight recovery
4). Press power button to select, it'll show an erroring Android screen now
5). Press volume up + power again (might take a few times before the recovery menu is available
6). Wipe user data and reset. It'll take a few minutes but it'll save you from having to deal with talkback
Thanks so much for this thread. Just got mine and am in Nicaragua and have no way to send it back to Amazon and was gonna flip the **** out.

Same issue on mine. Purchased via Amazon. PM you the info...
Same issue- purchased from Amazon
I had the same issue when I received my phone this morning. I couldn't get it to work even after following the instructions to power it off and then power on + volume up. I am returning it to Amazon for a replacement. If I have the same issue with the replacement, I'll just return it. There's no way I'm paying $200 for a brand new phone to have it not even work upon taking it out of the box.
I just received my telephone today... After spending 20 minutes to pass the wizard guide (as i had to tap over 10 times to pass a single step), I cant even unlock my screen. Im from Bulgaria, there is no way I will send back the phone to Amazon. Its just not financially possible for me. I dont know what to do. A brand new phone...
i just bought an asus zenfone 2 from amazon and the same talkback is happening.

Push power button when you see the android with eroor under it and press up volume, you might need to dothis a couple of time but be aware that if you do it too fast you can go to recovery then jump back out just as quickly.
Holding power for more than 8 seconds will result in a reset.
Hi, Just bought the Asus ZenFone 2 , I cant pass the Welcome screen its talk back feature is on Pls Help. Thanks
This is 4/30/16. I just got my screen replaced on my ASUS ZenPad 8 inch 580. Same problem happened with Talkback to me. I followed the instuctions from the guy who said tap twice on the buttons. I had to sometimes do this many times, but I got through to the tablet settings to turn Talkback off even before settig up Google and other apps, I just connected to my wifi, then went next until the home screen could be opened, then settings symbol, then accessibility, then turned off Talkback. Boy was I happy. Maybe I got an old LCD and screen? Dont know why it happened so much later than you people in 2015. from:[email protected]
I have a Samsung I9250 which I've unlocked, rooted and loaded with Lineage. The Lineage version is 13.0-20171126-NIGHTLY-maguro. The recovery is TWRP and the root is through SuperSU FREE (CM) v2.79-SR3. The On/Off button doesn't usually work. If the phone is off then pressing On/Off has no effect. Occasionally it works for no reason I can see, it seems to be random, but for the most part it simply doesn't have any effect. If the phone is on then the same is true. Turning it off from the On/Off button is usually impossible. I get round this through Settings>Display & lights>Wake on plug. This means I can activate the phone by connecting it to a PC using its USB cable. This will activate the phone immediately if it is off. It doesn't help with turning it off and I am usually reduced to taking the battery out. The phone is effectively useless although it is clearly NOT bricked. When I can turn it on it works fine.
I don't know if this is a hardware or software problem. If it's a software problem I don't know if the fault is in Lineage or TWRP or SuperSU. I noticed that the problem existed before I installed SuperSU. Has anyone else come across this problem? I'm reluctant to bin the phone because I spent such a long time getting Lineage on to it, but, if I can't turn it on or off it's not really a phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@erich_vogt it's more a hardware problem, you can buy a new button (find link of online stores in accessories section or google.it).
for easyness you don't need to plug charge/usb everytime, you can set volume button waker, find in settings > button (don't remember where correctly, it will be somewhere there) then use volume switches to wake it.

There have been power button bugs, but only in the OS. If it's not turning on from off, then I think the switch is broken! A common failure in old phones, which is why "volume button to wake" is important, to reduce load on the power button.
Thanks very much for offering to help.
I already had the option for the Volume control buttons to wake the phone turned on. It's here - Settings > Buttons > Volume Buttons > Wake up device. This worked for a while then stopped. I disassembled the phone to look at the On/Off button. I tried turning the phone on directly from the metal contact pad beneath the plastic button. This worked. When the phone had booted I checked to see if there was another nightly update for Lineage. There was the 3rd of Dec update. I downloaded and installed the nightly update using TWRP. It reported a successful install. The phone rebooted and never got past the Google boot-up screen. I waited for a few minutes and the took the battery out and tried turning on again from the metal contact pad. The phone booted but again got stuck (or seemed to) on the Google boot-up screen. I'm afraid that's it for me. This doesn't appear to be related to anything I have done or not done. The phone is just taking up too much time and it will have to go the the local recycler. Life is, as they say, too short. Thanks again for your suggestions.

3rd dec nightly has problem with booting, get back to older than it.
Reset volume button waker, if it stopped working. I never had problems with volume buttons.
I'd second the idea of it being software. I've had problems with all builds after 20171112. I get the impression there was something overlooked when the developers unified the builds for different GNex variants.
If you still have the phone, try that 20171112 build.
I don't know how to roll back to an earlier build. The phone will not boot. If I try VolumeDown+On/Off to try to get into TWRP Recovery mode nothing happens. The adb bridge option is turned on but if I connect the phone to my PC with a usb cable it does not appear in Device Manager as it used to. If I run ".\adb devices" it is not listed so clearly adb cannot find it. I don't know what else I can do.

Ah, ok. Sorry, I thought you could still do more than that, but it was rebooting and unusable in that sense.
That's well beyond any help I can offer you. I hope you got any data off it.
Greeting,
I have a weird issue where occasionally after I unlock my phone, my screen doesn't respond to touches.
The phone works and responds to physical button presses but not touch.
Not sure exactly when it started happening but I've noticed this since last week.
Any idea what might be causing this?
I'm running Android Pie 52.0.A.3.202.

Got the same issue on 52.0.A.8.50. Usually opening the app drawer then hitting back solves it - otherwise none of the virtual buttons work.
Searching the web it seems touch screen issues are pretty common on this phone. I'm a bit surprised there isn't more being said here about it. Some experience delayed response, dead areas and no response at all. I have all those issues. Yes I am on the latest firmware. I bought the phone used with a cracked screen. I checked it out and everything seemed fine. I didn't use the phone, just set it aside til replacement screen came. I should have used the phone to thoroughly check it out but didn't want to go through the set up process as I was thinking of B/L unlock and root. New screen came, put it on and seemed to be working fine then screen would be unresponsive. I did factory reset, software update, software repair, went into settings and made sure sure everything was good there, nothing helped. The center of the screen (it's low and a bit off center) is pretty much dead. To open launcher I have to touch and hold near the top of the display. Touch and hold apps is tricky. Usually the app just opens. When I do get it to hold, I can't drag it anywhere. Also, icons in the drop down menu cannot be rearranged or edited. I can swipe up/down, side to no problem. Whenever touch goes dead completely, the home, back and minimize buttons go grey. Tapping the power button gets them back functioning again. . Function test fail. Free draw lets me make a few seconds of scribbles then freezes. The x and rectangle block draw does the same. Tapping power button does nothing to unfreeze either. The color test pass even the block one where you toggle on/off sections of the screen in blocks. It's really weird. First impression would lead me to the screen but it really acts like a software issue. From what I've read so far this phone uses two different display drivers. I not seen anything on how to change that and it would more than likely mean B/L unlock and root, which I'm not against doing. I would just like to know definitively if it's hardware or software. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Maybe the Screen Connector wasn't 100% clean.
Or not only the screen is damaged.
I heard that the touch problems are mostly fixed with PIE. The closed source clearpad touch driver is..... Hoping Q gives us an further updated driver.
You still get sometimes ghost touches on higher workload or if the keyboard app is slow, but if you have dead spots the hardware sounds damaged.
