Phone arrive in mail yesterday. Charged phone fully. Turned phone on. Lots of voice activations on the set-up wizard screen. I try to pick a language from the drop-down screen and it just highlights it with green dashed lines and the voice activation says 'english'. That's it. I try to hit the next arrow for the next step and it keeps telling me the time. I mean I'm no expert by any means but I'm also no rookie when it comes to turning a phone on for the first time. This is really weird. I can't get past this screen. Tried fully shutdown and start back up. Same thing. Mind you I haven't put a sim card in yet but I didn't think that would matter as I was going to use wifi to set it up anyways. I can't even turn the phone off by touching on screen either. I have to long press the power button to turn it off as the touch screen doesn't seem to work. Anyone have issues with this? It's very disheartening coming straight out of the box...

I got past the screen but I had to 'double-tap' (and by double tap i mean like 4-5 taps sometimes) the next arrow. I have to do this at every screen until it gets to the log into gmail screen. I try to type my email in by double tapping each letter but this doesn't work. Now I have no idea what to do.
I had the same thing happen to me yesterday and figured it out.
If you have not figured it out let me know I can help.
mine arrived same problem

I'm having this same issue as you. Mine just arrived today. It seems likely they put a recent image on these that may have something missing off broken on it. The models before them seem to not have this problem. Worst is you can really fix it or get past it since its the initial setup. What to do now? Send it back?

TalkBack may be enabled. If this setting is enabled, there will be voice prompts to every action made. Also the touch screen may behave differently and appear to be defective. Instead of one tap to open an item it will require tapping once to highlight then double tap to open. Also when swiping it may require using two fingers instead of one. To disable go to Apps/Settings/Accessibility/Talkback - turn off.

Thanks! This worked. I found someone else online who had the same issue and that's exactly what happened to him. I just used 2 fingers to click through the setup wizard and then finally was able to go into settings and turn TalkBack off. This was very annoying right out of the package. Hope this helps someone else.
Could any of you please kindly send me a private message with the model, serial number, and if purchased in the USA? We are trying determine which units have been distributed with TalkBack feature enabled.

I had someone that had this happen at the Intel pre-Google IO event Wednesday night. If you don't want to go through the full setup -
1). Turn the phone off
2). Hold volume up + Power
3). Use the volume down button to highlight recovery
4). Press power button to select, it'll show an erroring Android screen now
5). Press volume up + power again (might take a few times before the recovery menu is available
6). Wipe user data and reset. It'll take a few minutes but it'll save you from having to deal with talkback
Thanks so much for this thread. Just got mine and am in Nicaragua and have no way to send it back to Amazon and was gonna flip the **** out.

Same issue on mine. Purchased via Amazon. PM you the info...
Same issue- purchased from Amazon
I had the same issue when I received my phone this morning. I couldn't get it to work even after following the instructions to power it off and then power on + volume up. I am returning it to Amazon for a replacement. If I have the same issue with the replacement, I'll just return it. There's no way I'm paying $200 for a brand new phone to have it not even work upon taking it out of the box.
I just received my telephone today... After spending 20 minutes to pass the wizard guide (as i had to tap over 10 times to pass a single step), I cant even unlock my screen. Im from Bulgaria, there is no way I will send back the phone to Amazon. Its just not financially possible for me. I dont know what to do. A brand new phone...
i just bought an asus zenfone 2 from amazon and the same talkback is happening.

Push power button when you see the android with eroor under it and press up volume, you might need to dothis a couple of time but be aware that if you do it too fast you can go to recovery then jump back out just as quickly.
Holding power for more than 8 seconds will result in a reset.
Hi, Just bought the Asus ZenFone 2 , I cant pass the Welcome screen its talk back feature is on Pls Help. Thanks
This is 4/30/16. I just got my screen replaced on my ASUS ZenPad 8 inch 580. Same problem happened with Talkback to me. I followed the instuctions from the guy who said tap twice on the buttons. I had to sometimes do this many times, but I got through to the tablet settings to turn Talkback off even before settig up Google and other apps, I just connected to my wifi, then went next until the home screen could be opened, then settings symbol, then accessibility, then turned off Talkback. Boy was I happy. Maybe I got an old LCD and screen? Dont know why it happened so much later than you people in 2015. from:[email protected]

Everytime I boot my phone up, it works fine up until when the screen goes into sleep mode. Once it goes into sleep mode I cannot turn the screen back on, it stays black. The keyboard, end and answer key lights show up when I press the power button but the screen just stays black no matter what button I press.
I end up having to either take the battery out or using the stick to press the reset button on the side in order to get the phone to where I can see the screen again. I have adjusted the settings to where the screen doesnt go into sleep mode and the screen just stays on but that drains my battery. I want to be able to have my screen go off so I can save power but if it goes off it wont come on again until I reboot.
I have done a hard reset. This problem started happening to me when I started using the Energy Rom but I've even flashed different Roms and the problem still exist.
Somebody please tell me what's wrong! I need help! This is a big annoying problem to have. Thanks.
is this problem occurring when you slide the keyboard out?
i had the t-mobile touch pro2 with this problem.
the screen would die when the keyboard was out and not come back.
if this is the case, what i did was...
well. obviously not open the keyboard fully.
but if i accidentally had.
instead of pulling out the battery, i waited...
till the screen 'naturally' went to sleep.
than i would pull out the stylus or press power button
and the screen would come on.

Yes the problem still exist even when I slide the keyboard out. Once the screen goes off, that's it....pressing the power button to get it out of sleep mode, sliding the keyboard, I press all buttons and nothing works. The only thing that "works" to get the screen back on is removing the battery or using the stylus to press the reset button.
When sliding the keyboard out the keys light up but the screen doesn't come on, also pressing the power button lights up the end and answer keys without the screen coming on.

so. whenever the screen goes out, period, you cant get it back?
or the screen goes out and cant get it back once you slide the keyboard out?
if it is only when sliding out the keyboard...
try not opening the keyboard fully on the right side.
on my rhodium, after that point, the screen goes out.

Yes, period. Also, you know when you put your face to the phone during a call and the screen goes off so your face wont press anything on the screen? It doesn't come back on from that either once I end the phone call, it just stays black. I'm assuming you don't have any other suggestions. This Sucks

This has to be a software issue but I don't know where to start. I'm surprised nobody else has encountered this problem. I've grown frustrated of this issue because I don't understand why it's doing this. I have had the phone for almost 6 months only dropping it once 4 months ago and it wasn't a strong damaging drop that would affect anything inside. I guess I'll just have to go last resort and call warranty to swap the phone out. Thanks for the help.

My phone also dos not come back on, when I put it in out the sreen with the power button on top, or when the phone goes to sleep. Nothing can put it back on(opening te keyboard, pulling out the stylis, presing the answer-, windows-, back- and end button). I and up using a music players too keep the phone busy what's makes it operational. Cant really remember when this started happening exactly. My phone is at the moment loaded with a standard ROM. I used too have a custom ROM.
My TP2 does this too, although I only encounter the problem sometimes when someone calls. I answer and put the phone next to my ear, the screen goes black as it should and the phone just dies. I can't hear what the other person is saying and the screen wont turn on anymore. I have to take out the battery to reboot.
set light sensor to manual in settings. You have some bad or fragmented code causing the problem. Pretty common actually, many different reasons, but usually either a bad light or proximity sensor or software issue. Setting the sensor to manual should do it, if not, hard reset and allow the phone to fully set up before touching it, to allow full customization process to complete. Search my posts on SOD (sleep of death) for more information.
Funny this was brought up. Now im worried I just dropped 250.00 and have a new one coming.
Mine started with the ear piece quit working. couldnt hear anything except on speaker.
Anyway I started having the screen issue over a month ago, only way to get it back was soft reset with the stylus. Also when the screen was lit, I couldn't hit the power button to turn the screen off. At times the screen would be on 24/7 and I just dealt with it. The times when it decieded to go to sleep was when I needed the soft reset. Well long story short I forgot my charger one day at work and the battery died. after pressing the power button for hours with no response, moving the screen in all diffrent directions as I pressed the button. It came on once after hrs of messing with it. Well today it died again and I am fed up with it so out came the tools. Once I opened it up I noticed the ribbon that feeds the screen from the mother board was worn and torn. the ribbon slides everytime the keyboard is slid out and it rubs on both sides of the phone. I thought maybe mine was just a fluke and was installed wrong considering the phone being 10 months old but now I read this and see maybe its a common problem. The cheapest I could find the Ribbon was 56.00 so I didnt want to chance it not being the issue.
Just got my Optimus G Pro a week ago, coming from several years of iPhone usage (and upgrades).
As of yet I've not rooted or anything, it's totally stock aside from some play store downloads.
Here's my question. (I don't know if it's by design or if my phone's messed up.)
When on a call, if I hit the lock button, it darks the screen but the phone is not really locked. Any button press takes me straight to the call screen. Is this by design?
The problem I'm running into because of this is; randomly while on a call I'll hear two faint beeps and the screen will turn on. But there is no notifications (no mms, no emails, etc) and I don't have minute minder (plus the beeps are random, not on the minute) so I don't know why the screen is coming back on.
Both of these issues basically means the phone is going to call screen when in my pocket (I use headphones a lot on calls) or on my desk or whatnot and I have accidentally hit buttons.
I'm used to the iphone where when I hit lock, it's really locked. You cannot accidentally activate the phone unless you first unlock the phone. This is a big deal to me because I'm on conference calls a lot. I need to be able to trust when I lock the phone that it's locked (lockscreen).
Outside of calls it works fine, I lock it and I have to do the unlock action to get back to the phone from the lock screen.
Anyone have any insights or suggestions? And is the no lock screen while on a call by design? (cause that'd be a little lame)
I love this phone and really don't want to root (/ custom rom) yet, at least not until I have vetted all the stock issues to make sure custom romming later didn't cause these issues. To me, the lock button should always lock no matter what the phone is doing. It's such a basic expectation that had I rooted or rommed before this I would swear it was cause by that and not a stock function.
The first question yes it does that by design you can hit the home button in call and go back to the.home screen......and if the phone sees light it.thinks its away.from your.face and wakes back up to.do stuff like text or input numbers for call centers and stuff
Sent from my LG-E988 using Tapatalk
Hitting the home button while on a call does take me to the home screen, but the phone still doesn't lock. Lock button takes you to a blank screen but the phone is still not locked (at the lock screen).
I believe it's by design, but it sure doesn't make sense. Why would a developer think "Hey, you know that dedicated hardware lock button that all phones have? How about we just not let it work while people are on calls? Why would anyone want to keep their phone from being messed with while on an important call, that'd be silly... Maybe next update we can make the home button randomly take you somewhere other than the home screen."

I don't know but why would you lock a phone during a call? you won't be able to input numbers during a call or just remove it from your year for a second to glance at the call time.....and when the call ends the screen lights up to show you call info and reminding you if you want to lock your phone............so what i am trying to say if i cannot understand the usefulness of locking during call.......if you want the screen to turn off the proximity sensor does that.................can you please give me an example of its use.....thank you
Hello,
I just got a nexus 7 2013 that had a busted screen. It still showed data between the huge shatter, and didn't respond to my attempts to unlock it by swiping. I assumed it was just a bad screen and bought a replacement and installed it today.
The display worked, but the touchscreen didn't seem to be responding to me trying to swipe to unlock. I eventually figured out that although I couldn't unlock it, the dialogue menus from long pressing the power button did work! Well, some, anyway. I can change sound modes, airplane mode, and access the power off dialogue, but am only able to select cancel from the two options, though ok is not grayed out. I can also click anywhere outside the dialogue and it will back out of it, leading me to assume that the screen's hardware is intact and functioning.
I then hard reset it via stock recovery and am now at the welcome screen prompting a language selection with the big right arrow, unable to press it but still able to interact with the power off and cancel options of the power menu.
Recovery says its running KOT49H.
I've used NRT to reflash the same build from a stock download, and I'm still stuck at the same spot.
What the heck can I do?

I would assume that the new digitizer is still bad. There are lots of them on sale on Ebay where the seller would assure the merchandise has been "tested" before shipping. In reality, they might not be. If you happen to have one with spotty functionality, there's nothing you can do with the software to cure it. It would not respond in some areas, period. If you only replace the digitizer instead of the whole LCD/touchscreen assembly, chances are you have a partially bad one. I've never come across one good one myself.
So I activated Universal Switch on S6 Edge to check it out, something went wrong in the settings (long story short, got a pop up while setting it up), now screen unresponsive.
It works, I just get this blue horizontal line scanning the screen and nothing else but the power button and home button works. Tried safe mode, no bueno. How can I disable US feature without resetting to factory or at least no data wipe (if possible!)?
Android 5.0, rooted with pingpong, no custom recovery, knox 0x0.
All help is appreciated.

Thanks alot

It doesn't give me the option to turn it off
Hi,
I have been struggling with Universal Switch on a Samsung S5 Neo. I switched it on, but was never able to switch it off again.
These are findings so far:
-> Did a factory reset using "Sound Up", "Home" and "Power" button simultaneous.
-> The device comes back and wants to configure itself again.
-> I restored my settings from Google, but this immediately brought back "Universal Switch"
-> Factory Reset again and configured the device, but told Google that I want to use it as a "New Device".
-> Now I can use my device in a proper way.
-> In Google Play Store I find all my Apps which were linked to my account and reinstalled them and I am back in business again.
-> Took me half a day to sort this out.
The programmer who designed and programmed this should be hung and shot and poisoned, because this is absolute Crapware.
Hope this helps for all the others who are suffering.
You can also push the home button three times and it should turn it off.
thank u ur the best
Ok, so i have exactly the same problem except my home button doesn't work
Anyone one know how to sort this without having to take it in to a store?
I was faced with this problem before and looked everywhere and couldnt find a fix. This was a while ago. So I dont remember what I did to clear it. I was cleaning off the screen and touched the home button as I was wiping it off and the problem began again.... I just came across your comment because all the others failed. I pressed the home button 3 times quickly and the blue lines stopped scrolling. In addition, I went over the accessibility and I turned off the "Universal Switch" option as much as the option allows. I hate this function. I do not use it or need it (for my needs). I hope I can remember what to do next time this happens. I swore to myself I would remember last time, but apparently that wasnt a guarantee. This time, I will write it down and put is somewhere I know I will find it next time I see these nefarious blue lines scrolling. Hopefully I wont see it again since I disabled it more than it was to begin with. Thank you ever so for commenting. You saved me a lot of frustration!
great fix

EDIT: Fixed it (for now). Copied from my post on site 2.
What's up guys, I'm sorry for the late followup. It turned out, that I was too lazy to send it back. Now, almost a year later, I'd gotten into fixing phones and got the courage to open up the device and see what's up with the power button. It felt like the issue has been a bit less noticeable recently but I checked the replacement parts prices and how to open our phone up.
I think I've fixed the issue by adding one layer of electrical tape over the button-contact. I believe the issue is that the pin a just a little bit too short to reliably properly click the button.
Short tutorial:
Turn the device off and remove the simcard bracket.
It's actually super easy and you don't need to screw or remove anything. Google "Xiaomi MI A2 LITE disassembly screen battery smontaggio" you'll find a video, in the beginning the guy shows how to remove the backcover. I've used a hard, plectrom-looking "opening-pick" at the bottom, then carefully but firmly around the sites. You don't even need to remove the flex cable from the back, just make sure you don't rip it off. Cut off a short bit from the electrical tape, tape it from the battery to the contact, so it doesn't fall off. Close the case again, turn it on and check whether the powerbutton still clicks (doesn't stick) and test the screen lock. Post back if this has worked or if you've tried it.

Does anybody have a similar issue?
I've ordered the device from gearbest to Europe. Everything worked nicely.
However, recently when I hit the power button it sometimes triggers the double click interaction and opens my camera. I've tested a few ways to press it slightly from the side, with more force or less. However it will 1/3 times vibrate and start the camera like I had double clicked it, it's more likely when I hit it a bit too lightly though. Could it already be worn out after 2 months? This never happened when the device was new as far as I ran remember.
Yes I'm aware that I could change the camera shortcut but this doesn't stop me from worrying about whether my powerbutton will give out soon.
I was using the phone happily in the case Xiaomi has provided. Dropped the phone once and got a little scratch on the VOL Button but other than that, nothing crazy has happened. Does anyone have a clue whether they will still replace it? I'd gotten it in mid-August.

Buttons are usually the main gate to "planned obsolescence". I bought this device after my nexus 5 power button started working funny (I physically removed it and worked only with gestures). So, now I try not to press the button unless necessary. I unlock with fingerprint, and lock with Greenify.
In other words. Make sure of it, if the button starts working funny, I'd file a warranty claim. Or it won't last long and warranty will expire eventually. It can happen with this device and with any other piece of tech.
My opinion.
If you do place a warranty claim, let us know how xiaomi's customer service works in Europe.

I'd gotten it in mid-August.

when you dropped it
the power button may have got stuck
this is possible and I've seen it on some other devices
you can open it yourself if you don't care for warranty like i do
but the safest option is to claim warranty and yes they would replace it

I have the exact same issue. It started when I installed the Oreo update, but it could be a coincidence. I'm still looking for a fix.
It also happens to me, and I didn't drop the phone... Is there a way to change the shortcut to, maybe, press the power button 3 times instead of 2?

It happens to me too, I disabled the shortcut and just not using it right now. I don't think there is a way to change the shortcut
It happens to me....
It happened for me as well.
And i think it's a software bug, not hardware..

It obviously is not a software issue. This means that they've used cheap contact points on the button if this happens to many of us. This is a hardware issue.

I'm having this issue since day one. It is obviously software, otherwise the same contact problem would occur when turning the screen ON, but it never happens. Solution is to disable the feature under System -> Gestures -> Jump to camera.
i also dissabled the camera gesture because of this issue.
im sure this is reasoned by a more or less loose power button and not an software issue

How can that be a software issue? Same issue happens to me whenever I use the power button, either to lock the screen or unlock the screen. Also if it was a software issue, it could be fixed via installing a GSI. That doesn't fix it either.

Let me break it down and you can tell me if I'm missing something.
1. Many users are reporting that the camera app starts when pushing the power button to turn the screen off.
2. They are not reporting any other issue with the power button, like the camera app starting when they try to turn the screen on, the button being irresponsive, or the camera app NOT starting when they deliberately push the button twice.
3. The problem reportedly goes away if the double-push gesture is turned off in settings.
Do you still think this is a hardware issue?

When I disable double press gesture from Gestures, still when I sometimes hit the power button, the phone locks and closes the screen and then turns the screen on again which means that it still registers one presses sometimes as double presses. Also if you've ever used a keyboard or a mouse or anything electrical with buttons on it, these appliances do the same sometimes even though you tap one button they sometimes register it twice. Which is a hardware issue. I still can't see any software issue here. When you disable the double press gesture, it doesn't launch the camera anymore but it turns on the screen after locking it (sometimes as usual)

Not for me, so it's possible that these are actually two different problems with this phone. I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah me neither. They don't look like they're going to fix anything or listen to users either. I'm happy with stock Android though.
Hi guys, for me, the problem has fixed disabling the option "Power button lock the phone", and set the option "Lock automatically": immediately.
The fix
What's up guys, I'm sorry for the late followup. It turned out, that I was too lazy to send it back. Now, almost a year later, I'd gotten into fixing phones and got the courage to open up the device and see what's up with the power button, without disabling the functionality.
I changed the power/volume button assembly outright just the other day, and so far I'm not getting this issue anymore.
I recorded myself doing it here, so you can see how easy (or hard) it is: https://youtu.be/q8kaY-v0q_Q
