[Q] Blank Screen, but Nexus does boot! - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi all,
My screen is playing up on my Nexus.
Basically I fell asleep on it like an idiot, and when I woke up the screen was having a bit of a crazy pixel party. No noticable physical damage to the screen tho. The device was running hot.
I had originally thought it might be a dead battery issues as the symtoms match this problem, and have tried the various resetting instruction for that, since I was struggling to get it to reboot turn on.
However I have since managed to get it to boot - but the screen is totally blank - not even a flicker.
I know it has booted because I can send it an email and hear the e-mail chime a few moments later.
I've had the back off but it doesn't look overly user serviceable.
I'm close to giving up, buth thought before I go and spend on a new tablet see if anyone had seen something similar or had any ideas?
I've found videos suggesting that the screen connector for the Nexus 7 is unreliable, but the layout of the back shown in the video of the tablet is different to mine, so I'm assuming this is a Nexus 7 2012 problem?
Any advice much appreciated!
EDIT: Apologies noticed the sticky saying this should go in Q&A not General. If mods can move it?
Thanks,
Phil.

You said it yourself you broke the screen. There's a bunch of guides and videos to show you how to replace it. It's not hard just takes a little time.

Random restarting and freezing [PICS ADDED]

Hi all, just want to describe some problems I've been having over the last week or so.
Basically, my Orbit suddenly developed the habit of randomly freezing and displaying wierd patterns on the screen and requiring a soft reset and also just randomly restarting.
I first noticed this about a week ago, the phone did fall out onto the driveway a few days ago but it wasn't nothing it hasn't been through before and the screen is FINE, no dead pixels nothing. This is the ROM I had on it when it first started happening: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=912989
My initial thought that it was something do with something installed on it, perhaps a software issue so I did a hard reset but same problems. I changed the ROM a few times but same problems. It's getting to the point where I have to look to buy a new phone.
It's quite difficult to describe what happens when the device freezes. I will try and get a picture or video but it's at random . The best way I can describe it is that it the device freezes, a section of the screen goes black slowly before the remaining section fades to black completely sometimes showing white lines. Moreoever, when I say the screen goes black, I don't mean that it goes off, the screen remains on but black.
Perhaps it is a hardware issue with a loose/faulty connection somewhere? My first thought was that it could be down to the screen connection but when the phone is working, the screen is absolutely normal.
Any suggestions are welcome. Please bear in mind that I've got no trouble in opening the device if needs be (had to change the LCD screen myself, I know, I know, go me! ). Thanks in advance!
Just noticed something. I've had it lying around re-filling up the inbox from a backup but as soon as I attached the charger, the problem occured, so could it be down to something from that as a result?
I've just managed to take a few pics. Theres quite a bit of glare unfortunately however this type of pattern doesn't always occur, sometimes it's less noticable than that.

hi dude,
my first thought was battery but now thinking you might have a loose connection with the motherboard and lcd.
i would check lcd ribbon that connects to motherboard first, obviously you know exacly what i meen, if that is not the problem i would buy a new battery (charge while off, do not turn on untill fully charged new battery)
if both of these do not do the trick then i would consider buying a new device. (unless anyone else has any ideas??)
thanks

[Q] Galaxy Nexus dead?

Hi,
I received a complaint from a friend of mine that her galaxy nexus stopped working. She dropped the phone off at a service center, and they told her that it was a hardware problem - specifically the "flash ig" inside the phone was broken. I tried looking this up but no info could be found.
What happened was that basically her phone underwent a hard fall and a portion of the screen on the bottom right cracked. However the phone worked normally for the next 2 days. After that the phone just turned off and no attempts were successful in turning it on thereafter.
I took a look at the phone, tried resetting it in every way possible, but nothing works. I believe the screen flashed for a brief second around 10-15 minutes after i plugged the phone into my laptop, but im not sure. Other than that, it's basically a paperweight at this point.
Can anything be done for the phone, any hopes or possibilities? Please let me know. Attached a couple pics showing the crack.
Thanks.
can anyone help with this?
Without seeing the actual damage, no one can say for sure. It could be as simple as resoldering one connection on the pcb, or it could be toast. Trust me in the no one is clairvoyant enough to determine what the damage is without actually opening it up to see. There's not much to lose at this point, so you may want to open it up using one of the teardown guides online and see if anything jumps out at you.

Black line on screen

EDIT: This is the 32GB model, fwiw.
My new N7 had me very worried this morning.
I woke up and went to use the tablet, only to notice a very skinny - yet very noticeable- black line running the entire length of the screen, about an inch or so away from the right edge (when holding in portrait). I started searching around online, and it seems this was an issue on the older N7 model, and that Google typically replaced those units as it was usually a faulty screen. This made me very nervous as I've only owned this tablet for a week and I figured I would now have to exchange it. I tried everything from powering off, uninstalling the most recently installed apps, changing keyboard and a few other actions, but to no avail. I was about to perform a factory reset, to see if that helped, and decided to take a screenshot before I did that to show others what the issue was. Well, as soon as I took the screenshot (Home + Volume down), it went away! I can't imagine what caused it in the first place, but it's gone now and everything else seems to be OK, so I think this was just a false alarm.
Update: So the black line re-appeared later in the evening yesterday. I noticed that the line persists through the opening splash screen and boot anitmation when you reset the device, so I don't think it's related to the launcher (Nova) or any apps I'm using. I also determined that the line disappears when using the camera, so I'm really not sure what to think about this. If it happens again, I may just exchange it at BB since I've only had it for a week. I still love this tablet, and plan to keep using one for the foreseeable future, but I'm starting to become a bit nervous that this is a hardware defect that will continue to be an issue.
Anyone with a (new or old) Nexus who has experienced anything like this? Thanks very much.

A line one the screen is definitely not normal. Specially after you have completed a complete system restore. I would suggest at this point to go ahead and exchange the unit.

Thanks very much for the response. I'm going to go ahead and exchange it.
Also, apologies for originally posting this in the General thread.
So I decided to exchange my N7 due to the black line occasionally appearing. I took it back to Best Buy and was given another BNIB unit, only to discover that it was DOA when I got home. I tired using 4 different USB cables as well as different power adapters and electric outlets. No response whatsoever each time. Looks like I'll have to take this back tomorrow and hope that I get lucky with number 3.

[Q] Scrambled/garbled screen on T-Mobile G2 - flex cable problem? Please help!

Hi all.
My phone's display has been getting progressively worse and worse over the past couple weeks. Initially, when I flipped out the keyboard, the screen would get garbled. I could technically still interact with it (it still responded to stuff), but the display would start glitching out and move all over the place. It's like there's tons of scanlines and it repeats the same display again and again.
When I went back into portrait mode, things were fine. This was extremely awkward but I dealt with it because I had little choice.
However, over the past couple weeks, the problem's gotten progressively worse. Holding my phone a certain way would cause the screen to glitch up again. It came to a point where I had to flip out the screen and keep the flex cable positioned a certain way so I could see the screen. I'm using a dull edge to kinda poke that flex cable around and it helped me gain use of the phone, but today it's gotten so bad now it refuses to "undo" itself when it boots and no amount of poking and prodding of the flex cable will help.
It looks almost exactly like this guy's phone (not my video):

Luckily, I was able to get a VNC server installed on the thing, so if you guys think it's a software issue, I may be able to get it to do something, but I'm not going to be able to interact with the phone if I put it into Clockwork Recovery mode, so doing a hard reset is out of the question.
I'm having a flex cable come in and I'm going to get some local assistance disassembling and installing it, but before I do that, had anyone had this issue before? What did you do to fix it?
best guess is you need a new flex cable

Screen Flicker

Hey guys, I've got a pesky issue hopefully someone can shed some light on this. A couple weeks ago I noticed the screen on my GS3 (Running Wicked X 8.0) started to flicker little black horizontal lines across the screen. Sometimes you can barely see it other times (especially when the brightness is up all the way) its ridiculously bad. It does it worse in some apps more than others. Like right now i have the brightness at 100% on chrome and its hardly noticeable. But if I go to Facebook its BAD. Once the screen loads all the stuff it goes away somewhat. I had ordered a new OEM front screen and digitizer replacement before this so I wasn't to worried. Figured it was my screens last hoorah before going out. After swapping out screens I powered on my phone and its still doing it. I put my girlfriends sisters motherboard into my old screen and it wasn't doing it. Put it in my new one and still not doing it. I've tried factory resetting it. Turning off HW Overlay anything and everything I've seen I've tried. Even when playing games it doesn't do it. Its very very faint. Idk what the deal is. Please someone help me out. Greatly appreciate it.
Normally I would say ODIN back to Stock. Then see if the issue persists. But in this case since you have already opened the device it may not help as much to troubleshot the device. Still I would ODIN back to Stock to see if it helps.
