Hi,
My nexus 7 screen doesn't rotate back from landscape mode. This happens when I watch the BBC iPlayer. Then I have to uninstall the iPlayer and reboot the device each time. This was fine before going to Lollipop.
Any ideas what might be happening?

Check the settings in Display > Auto Rotate Screen. It might be disabling auto rotation but not toggling back.
If that's the case, you could use Tasker to turn auto rotation back on when you exit iPlayer.
I don't use the BBC iPlayer, but like the OP, I have been having this problem as well. Auto-rotate would work again after a reboot, but then just fail at any given time. I've also had this problem ever since Lollipop was installed to my device, and never when I had KitKat or even Jellybean on it. My Nexus 7 2013 is a 16 GB model, and it's on Lollipop 5.1.1 build number LMY47V.
I have this problem on CleanROM 6 with both Elemental and Glitch Kernel. It only happens after a couple of hours of use and a reboot fixes it. I have not been motivated enough to flash the stock kernel to see of that fixes it. I haven't seen it mentioned by anyone else in the Clean ROM thread.
Me too, came here to look for answers.
I hope it's not hardware related.
try clean restore to "stock"
I had this issue with grogg's rom (mostly stock) and went back the the cleanrom (closer to stock) with a full wipe, and it's back to working as it should. So, maybe just some sort of side effect or bad data somewhere.
Try a really "clean" reset of the OS/environment and see if that helps
Same here. Have to use certain apps to force the orientation to change

I've been having this problem on 4.4, 5.0.1, 5.1, stock rom, oakp, pa. And I found the following (in hope it would help fixing it):
1. Rebooting doesn't always fix it. Sometimes I have to clear cache + dalvik.
2. The issue happens less often when not using Nova Launcher and sticking to the Google Launcher.
3. The issue happens less often when switching off the magnetics sensor (that turns off the device when closing a 'smart' lid) using ElementalX kernel.
Could anyone confirm that?
Turn off your tablet. Try to press back cover hardly on N & S at nexus logo for a few second. Then turn on your tablet again. It should work.
I don't know why, but I also had this issue. I flashed stock 5.1.1 and rotation works normally.
If I had to guess, and I do..., I'd say it was an app causing the problem. Don't know what one or how though.
Flashing the stock kernel solved it for me. It's been a week and I have not seen the issue since.
I believe the problem is because the sensor board is either failing or just faulty and works on and off.
I hate the same problem and if you open CPU-Z and go to the sensor section when the screen doesn't rotate you can see most/ all of the sensors are not being picked up/detected
My fix is to shut down the hit my knuckle out of anger on the bottom of the tablet (On the screen and the back) Its as if the board is loose or has something that isn't making contact

So this has been driving me nuts ever since froyo. I don't recall my phone ever doing this before 2.2
I use Handscent for sms and lets say I open it up and are going through messages while in landscape mode. Once I am done I will hit home and set the phone back down. Then when a message comes in I will pick up the phone and check it and it opens handscent back in up Landscape mode even though I am holding the phone upright. There is at least a second lag before the phone switches it back to the correct position.
This is not just with handscent but any other program that supports landscape. It's really annoying and I have hard reset more than once since froyo. The app remembers what position it was in rather than just dected the correct position in the first place. I have also tried calibrating but the phone knows what to rotate so the rotation works fine it's just the app likes to remember the last position it was in rather than the current. I don't recall this being a problem on 2.1
Is there a way to fix it? It's trying me nuts
I have a friend who also has an evo hardware build 2 (mine is 3) and that phone doesn't take nearly as long as mine. You can still see it remembers the position you of the screen when you go back in, but it flips back rather quickly where mine takes up to 4-5 seconds.
I have tried recalibrating the g-sensor numerous times. Also when I am just rotating the phone back and forth it rotates the screen very quickly, the only time it lags is when I back out of an ap and go back in later.
anyone have any ideas?
Anyone?

Are you running a stock froyo kernel?I have hardware version 002 and am running Netarchy's 4.0.3 kernel over clocked to 1.15 ghz.I can see what you're talking about but my screen rotates to the correct position almost instantly.

I am running everything stock, non-root and no over clocking - I might have to try hard resting again - not sure what else to do

Running Fresh 3.1.0.2 with net's 4.1.8 and I get the same thing with certain apps. No idea why though.

Well I thought I would post an update - I ended up doing a hard reset. The odd thing is I have hard reset twice since I got the froyo update. However the first 2 times (both times I had the problem with rotation lag) I reset using the settings under SD & phone storage.
When I reset last night I used the bootloader to reset it. The lag is now gone (you can still see it rotate but it's fast now where as before it would take up to 5 seconds to kick in only when going back into an app though)
So anyone else having this problem I would just hard reset using the key combination. I have not recalibrate the g-sensor. I am also keeping an eye on what I install to see if a certain app brings the lag back but so far everything I have installed it seems fine. Not sure what was stuck in the phone or what was going on, I never used a task killer or anything. It was driving me crazy since a lot of time I would back out of an app in landscape and go back in there portrait and it would lag.
So anyway I will report back if it comes back but hopefully it stays gone.

your g-sensor could be going bad. i had a remaned evo i was playing with for a few days that did this and the g-sensor eventually quit working.

It's working now and the only time I had a problem was going back in to an app I left in landscape otherwise it was fast and correct. I think it's a software problem.
Hey there, just want to consult something to you guys. For the past few days I am experiencing a bug in screen rotation. Seems like the phone cannot detect the accelerometer and it doesn't rotate the screen/app accordingly. I also tried Rotation Locker set to auto but it only rotates when I lock/unlock the phone. Apparently the issue can be fixed by restarting the phone but it goes back again. BTW, phone is stock unrooted MB2. I experienced this after MB2. Anyone having the same symptoms?

Disable smart rotation.
Search this forum. I saw this problem long back

Also started experiencing this rotation bug with DMB2. I thought it was just because I was pushing the system to the edge.
The "smart rotation" comment above does not work. Only a restart does the trick.
This is so annoying. First, the battery issues. Now this?! Come on, Samsung. Don't kill my love for the Note 2 with your stupid updates.
Mine does the same and I have exhanged one unit because of it and still happens its weird wished samsung would fix it. Only seems to happen when I watch a video for long period of times. Dont have smart rotation enabled either its a strange one.
So, I have been having an issue where about after a day or two of my S4 kept on (no powering down or reboots) it starts to noticeably chug and slow down. I have experienced this issue on the stock TW ROM and the Google Experience ROM as well. I have tried to solve it by using apps such as Fast Reboot to free up RAM, but it does not seem to work. The only thing that solves it is a complete restart of my S4. I have seen a couple of other people mention this issue on other threads and I am wondering if anybody has pinned down the source of the problem and found a way to fix it or maybe there is an app out there that can automatically reboot my device once a day, so I don't have to do it manually.

You can configure Tasker (app) to auto restart your phone daily. If it were happening to me to, I would odin flash back to stock and re-root to see if it continues. Either way, good luck
Thanks, dude. Will try out Tasker. This even happened to me before I rooted, so I might just stick with Tasker for the time being.

For anyone else looking for an app that auto reboots you device there is an app actually called Auto Reboot and it automatically reboots your device once a day at a time that you designate. It requires root and is free.

I think there's a bad app or something you're using. My S4 has gone +20 days straight without a reboot
My nexus 7 2013 has the problem that it does not auto rotate.
I know I'm not the only one.
If I load a app that reads the sensors for rotation etc, they all report 0000000 ie no reading what so ever.
The problem occured after the update of android.
This happens with all the 4.4.2 roms I have tried (yes I did a reset/totally clean instal) I've tried 3 including stock
This happens with all kernels I have tried 2 including stock
I thought it was a hardware fault however following a tip on a few forums, if you set the tablet to NOT auto rotate, reboot to recovery, clear the cache, reboot to system, turn auto rotate on, it works for a few minutes and then stops. I know a new device would fix the issue, as wood rolling back to the old android version.
I want to run 4.4.2 or higher.
I dont want to send it back under warranty as I have a glass screen protector on it that cost $40 by the time I had imported it.
Does anyone know if there is a kernel/rom that can fix this? (or has anyone had this issue and what did you do to fix it?)
Thanks, Marty

I use SinLess ROM and the official CM 11 ROM and never had a rotate issue. It could be a coincidence when the trouble stated too.

Hey guys,
Just thought I'd ask. Today my n7 seems to be stuck in upside down portrait! Turning rotation in and off doesn't do anything, nor does rebooting. And it won't rotate to landscape. I haven't done a factory reset yet, hoping to avoid it. Just thought I'd ask her first.
There are some root apps that can force rotation ...

I've had this happen today also, in the recent past I had it lock on landscape (with the back camera behind the upper left corner). I had been using a non-standard kernel, and switched back to the stock, but it didn't seem to stop the problem. I read in another thread that there may be some problems with the sensors, perhaps affected by the on-off magnet in a smart case. I don't know that that is a problem, but I did just recently get a new smart polio case and if that's the problem I'll get something else!
Dga, since the last update I haven't bothered rerooting mine. Currently is sick standard.
Mbam, I do use a poetic brand case with magnet.
For the sake of it I might just factory reset and see what happens. Might even reinstall the stock rom, or maybe try L.
Well that was just seriously whack. My new laptop hasn't been connected to my nexus 7, and I thought I should re-root and back it up before I do anything. So I connected it to my laptop, waited until whatever drivers had been installed, then suddenly the n7 screen flipped around to normal, and now all rotation angles seem to be working again!!
I love technology......
