[Q] Auto rotate problems and a fix? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

My nexus 7 2013 has the problem that it does not auto rotate.
I know I'm not the only one.
If I load a app that reads the sensors for rotation etc, they all report 0000000 ie no reading what so ever.
The problem occured after the update of android.
This happens with all the 4.4.2 roms I have tried (yes I did a reset/totally clean instal) I've tried 3 including stock
This happens with all kernels I have tried 2 including stock
I thought it was a hardware fault however following a tip on a few forums, if you set the tablet to NOT auto rotate, reboot to recovery, clear the cache, reboot to system, turn auto rotate on, it works for a few minutes and then stops. I know a new device would fix the issue, as wood rolling back to the old android version.
I want to run 4.4.2 or higher.
I dont want to send it back under warranty as I have a glass screen protector on it that cost $40 by the time I had imported it.
Does anyone know if there is a kernel/rom that can fix this? (or has anyone had this issue and what did you do to fix it?)
Thanks, Marty

I use SinLess ROM and the official CM 11 ROM and never had a rotate issue. It could be a coincidence when the trouble stated too.

Camera stopped working

The camera has stopped working randomly. The only thing I could think of that might of caused it would be the phone some how shut down when it was in my pocket. When I start up the camera app it immediately closes. When I attempt to use Google goggles, it says cannot connect to camera. What can I do?
First off you can give us some more details as to what software you are running. Are you on a stock Sprint ROM? A custom ROM? Did you install any software and then notice this change? Does this happen 100% of the time?
I'm running the stock 2.2 rooted odexed rom. Stock kernel. And haven't installed any new software to cause this...
I've cleared cache, dalvik cache, camera app's cache and it still doesn't work...
No one has any idea? Has this ever happened to anyone else?
It happens to me on both ava stock 2.2 and now netarchys 2.2... I have to wipe everything to get it back for a few hours... it just did it to me again do you have netarchys fps fix?

This is the craziest thing ever. The camera has returned to working after 10 hours of not working. I didn't do anything to get it to return. I will be continuing to monitor the camera to see if it happens again... This is the first time it has ever happen and the first time I've been on a 2.2 Rom for a significant amount of time.
This just barely happened to my phone too! Grrrr!!!
I'm running Fresh.02 + I tried flashing several kernels to see if it would fix it but none of them helped.
kernels I tried, latest versions of: kingX, snap, netarchy
Will try to do a full wipe and flash the stock 2.2 rooted w/o any fancy mods. <--- ok this fixed it!
Does installing the 3D Gallery app cause the Sense camera app to randomly stop working?
I'm getting the same problem again on a different ROM.
UPDATE: I've uninstalled 3D Gallery & cleared data on the Camera app and it still doesn't work.
i am having this same problem. have flashed several roms with no fix. cannot pin point when this happened either. really frustrating. ive done reboots, wipe, you name it.
happened to me

Hi guys
Any luck with this problem? I'm using a rooted xperia neo running [email protected] #2 with an unlocked boot loader - I've used Google goggles many times before and then today its coming up with "Cannot connect to camera. You may need to restart your device" and yet the camera is working because behind this pop up I can see the image that the camera is seeing. I've tried to take a screen shot of this but the screen shot uses the camera and therefore I blanks out the image through the back lens.
I've also uninstalled the app and reinstalled it - cleared all Dalvik cache - as well as moved it to SD and made it a system app - none of these trials have made any difference.

Are you sure there are no problems or known bugs with the rom you are using? Have you tried reflashing your rom? (it might be a pain to do, but something in the rom might have broke and it can help to start fresh).
I never post here but I have had a problem with my phone's camera that I fix by some random thread I found a while ago so I thought I would share what helped me. The thread stated it is something to do with the camera's connection to the phone and sometimes with drops or bumps of the phone it becomes loose. All I had to do was turn the phone face down, put my thumb over the camera and press down with some force. Not enough to break it but just to reseat the connection. After that, restart the phone. I have done this a few times and it has been successful ever time. I hope you guys have the same success.

That is correct, in some cases i have found the camera has come unseated. but it could also be the board.

Rotation problem

Bought a Note 2 a couple days ago ( sold my old Note 2 to get the Galaxy s4...dind't like it so sold it and got an HTC One...dind't like it so sold it and got a Note 2 again )
After around 3 days i have a weird rotation problem, the rotation stops working and the only way to get it working again is to reboot.
Searched xda and google and it seems its a bug in the latest android firmware for the Note and not a fault of my device.
Anyone can confirm its a bug and if there is a fix how to fix it???
Still stock cause i wanted to test the device before rooting.

I myself haven't got that problem and I'm on the latest DME6 and DMF1 software.
Try a factory reset?

I'm on ME6 to with ME4, it's a new device. I bought a grey Note 2 last week and that device had the same problem...returned it and bought a brown Note 2 in another store and again same problem.
It works perfect for 2 days and then while in portait or landscape mode it freezes and doesn't wanna rotate anymore...reboot the phone and i'm good again.
I did a factory reset but that didn't solve it.
On the grey Note i used a Nillkin flip case and on the brown Note i'm using a zenus flip case but that shouldn't mess up my rotation right.
I read Samsung said it's a software bug in the latest firmware but if that was the case there would be a lot more threads here about this issue...so really don't know whats going on
2 brand new phones with the same issue...is it a software bug...is it the cases...is it a faulty device...don't know.
Thinking of rooting it and flash a rom with an older firmware to see if that solves it but reading a lot about the imei issues with the latest firmware and i'm on the latest firmware cause it's a new device so don't have a old efs backup to try out some older firmwares
Other users nu rotation issues??

I have tried several apps in the market and the only one that worked while having the issue is the one you posted ( so if i don't find a solution i'm gonna buy that app )
But i would like to know if it's a software bug like Samsung claims and if there are more users with the same issue...or...if there is something wrong with my phone ( witch i doubt cause i have the same issue on 2 new different Note's and after a reboot everything works perfect for a couple of days...and that app wouldn't work if it's a problem with the phone )

i used to have that problem on an old rom, but newer ones work fine for me.
usually toggling auto-rotate off and on worked for me to fix rotation.
and i think getting that app is a good idea anyway.
i have it set to only override specific apps to give them better rotation or upside-down rotation, and to lock rotation to the current state instead of reverting to portrait when i turn off auto-rotate.

Toggling auto-rotate off and on doesn't solve it ( very irritating when the issue comes in landscape mode cause then the only way to use the phone is in landscape lol )...only way to get it back to normal is a reboot.
I'm gonna get that app to solve it for now and hope that a new software update fixes it...or i'm gonna root the phone and try some roms and see if the issue stays.
Do you think it's a software bug or a device fault?

[Q] Galaxy Note 2 sensors not working!

I've had this issue for quite a while now.. at first I figured it was just a bug as my screen would no longer rotate but I've flashed and tried several different roms (Probam jelly bean, KitKat, and now on Temasek V28 KitKat) and have tried a few different Kernels such as Devil 2.3.2 and currently using the stock Temasek kernel.
I've downloaded some sensor apps and they list my sensors, but whenever I go to test them such as the accelerom3534, gyroscope, compass.. they don't work at all.. They just say "waiting for data"
The Proximity sensor still appears to be working though.
Anyone had this issue? My phone I don't think is damaged.. I've dropped it on some small falls in the past but it's been in a nice cover as well.
Small update:
Went back to a rooted stock 4.1.2 AT&T ROM, stock kernel, stock modem.. no change. Must be the hardware being broken

None of the apps will rotate, or say a picture in "gallery". Home screen I know was never designed to rotate.
Also just tried the 1-Click ODIN restore to unrooted stock rom, no difference Screen still does not rotate in any apps.
Sounding like a hardware issue...
Sorry to hear that ...g

the only other option I can suggest is to check and make sure all of your settings that effect screen rotation of cleared. Make sure you don't have smart stay on and you have screen rotation enabled in your settings. You may also want to turn them on if they are off and reboot your phone. Then turn them back off and reboot your phone again. If that doesn't fix it I would assume its a hardware issue.
Did you drop your phone recently or get it wet or damp. That's the only thing I have heard can cause the hardware issue.
bringing this thread back to life sense I couldn't do the same for my sensors
Hello there! So I have had a similar experience with the Note 2. It is not hardware related as far as I can determine because I swapped out the prox sensor on mine and it did not help. I feel that it is kernel related. On my previous Note 2, I flashed some kernel, prox sensor stopped working. I flashed back to stock AT&T and it worked for one call before quitting again. That's when I tried a new sensor and camera unit. The phone was under warranty so I triangled away and traded it. With the current Note 2, I flashed Sky note 9.3 and then after a while the prox sensor stopped working, I just thought okay with whatever maybe it's the kernel I'm using. I wanted to upgrade to Sky note Air, so I did. Got all settled in and decided to see if their provided kernel fixed my call sensor, no cigar. So I went into *#0*# and realized that none of my sensors were working. Tried using Devil Kernel, stock, stock ROM, all sorts of configurations and I can't revive any of them. Feeling very defeated.

Rotation stuck in upside down portrait???

Hey guys,
Just thought I'd ask. Today my n7 seems to be stuck in upside down portrait! Turning rotation in and off doesn't do anything, nor does rebooting. And it won't rotate to landscape. I haven't done a factory reset yet, hoping to avoid it. Just thought I'd ask her first.
There are some root apps that can force rotation ...

I've had this happen today also, in the recent past I had it lock on landscape (with the back camera behind the upper left corner). I had been using a non-standard kernel, and switched back to the stock, but it didn't seem to stop the problem. I read in another thread that there may be some problems with the sensors, perhaps affected by the on-off magnet in a smart case. I don't know that that is a problem, but I did just recently get a new smart polio case and if that's the problem I'll get something else!
Dga, since the last update I haven't bothered rerooting mine. Currently is sick standard.
Mbam, I do use a poetic brand case with magnet.
For the sake of it I might just factory reset and see what happens. Might even reinstall the stock rom, or maybe try L.
Well that was just seriously whack. My new laptop hasn't been connected to my nexus 7, and I thought I should re-root and back it up before I do anything. So I connected it to my laptop, waited until whatever drivers had been installed, then suddenly the n7 screen flipped around to normal, and now all rotation angles seem to be working again!!
I love technology......

Screen does not rotate!

Hi,
My nexus 7 screen doesn't rotate back from landscape mode. This happens when I watch the BBC iPlayer. Then I have to uninstall the iPlayer and reboot the device each time. This was fine before going to Lollipop.
Any ideas what might be happening?

Check the settings in Display > Auto Rotate Screen. It might be disabling auto rotation but not toggling back.
If that's the case, you could use Tasker to turn auto rotation back on when you exit iPlayer.
I don't use the BBC iPlayer, but like the OP, I have been having this problem as well. Auto-rotate would work again after a reboot, but then just fail at any given time. I've also had this problem ever since Lollipop was installed to my device, and never when I had KitKat or even Jellybean on it. My Nexus 7 2013 is a 16 GB model, and it's on Lollipop 5.1.1 build number LMY47V.
I have this problem on CleanROM 6 with both Elemental and Glitch Kernel. It only happens after a couple of hours of use and a reboot fixes it. I have not been motivated enough to flash the stock kernel to see of that fixes it. I haven't seen it mentioned by anyone else in the Clean ROM thread.
Me too, came here to look for answers.
I hope it's not hardware related.
try clean restore to "stock"
I had this issue with grogg's rom (mostly stock) and went back the the cleanrom (closer to stock) with a full wipe, and it's back to working as it should. So, maybe just some sort of side effect or bad data somewhere.
Try a really "clean" reset of the OS/environment and see if that helps
Same here. Have to use certain apps to force the orientation to change

I've been having this problem on 4.4, 5.0.1, 5.1, stock rom, oakp, pa. And I found the following (in hope it would help fixing it):
1. Rebooting doesn't always fix it. Sometimes I have to clear cache + dalvik.
2. The issue happens less often when not using Nova Launcher and sticking to the Google Launcher.
3. The issue happens less often when switching off the magnetics sensor (that turns off the device when closing a 'smart' lid) using ElementalX kernel.
Could anyone confirm that?
Turn off your tablet. Try to press back cover hardly on N & S at nexus logo for a few second. Then turn on your tablet again. It should work.
I don't know why, but I also had this issue. I flashed stock 5.1.1 and rotation works normally.
If I had to guess, and I do..., I'd say it was an app causing the problem. Don't know what one or how though.
Flashing the stock kernel solved it for me. It's been a week and I have not seen the issue since.
I believe the problem is because the sensor board is either failing or just faulty and works on and off.
I hate the same problem and if you open CPU-Z and go to the sensor section when the screen doesn't rotate you can see most/ all of the sensors are not being picked up/detected
My fix is to shut down the hit my knuckle out of anger on the bottom of the tablet (On the screen and the back) Its as if the board is loose or has something that isn't making contact
