[Q] Nexus won't upgrade to 5.0.2 using System Update - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

My Nexus 7 (2013) Wifi+3G tablet has had a notification for me to update to 5.0.2 from 4.4.3 for several months now, and I've tried to upgrade it for quite a while....but it won't allow me to do it. It does have root, using TWRP as my recovery, but that's all I've done to it.
In fact, when it does the reboot, it comes up with this:
Does anyone know why it does this? How I can fix this, short of manually sideloading 5.0.2?

Because you are rooted there is no way to OTA update. You can manually flash Android 5.1.1 factory image using Nexus Root Toolkit on your PC but because you are on KitKat and want to flash Lollipop, it is necessary to completely wipe your device when flashing a new factory image to avoid all software problems . My advice before doing that is to copy all important files from your device storage to your PC. Also backup the apps you want using Titanium Backup and copy its folder to your PC as well. The use Nexus Root Toolkit to flash the 5.1.1 factory image. After it has done that, you can also use it to Root and flash TWRP.

Same boat...no paddle!
I am in the same boat...kitkat and newly rooted...love ability to boost the VOLUME! Would love to OTA to 5.1.1 but 5.02 is stuck in the chamber and, from what you say, wouldn't update anyway! I'm comfortable on PC but making changes on Nex7 gives me the shakes!
So in order to get 5.1.1 and re-root (?) I need to do the following:
1) "My advice before doing that is to copy all important files from your device storage to your PC."
Please give specific directions on how to do this and what "important files" I'd wanna copy to PC.
2) "Also backup the apps you want using Titanium Backup and copy its folder to your PC as well."
I downloaded Titanium but have yet to utilize. OK to backup ALL my apps or are most sitting on Google Play anyway? How to decide?
3) "Then use Nexus Root Toolkit to flash the 5.1.1 factory image."
Pretty self explanatory, I guess...
4) "After it has done that, you can also use it to Root and flash TWRP."
Confused here...by "root" do I go use something in the toolkit? Also use it to "flash" TWRP again?
5) Then when do I restore my apps and files from my PC?
Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Lost sd card storage after updating to Jelly Bean

Sorry to bother u guys, I am no expert at all this root and recovery stuff, but I took on the risk of updating my Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM version 4.04 yakju to Jelly Beans without making proper research and got myself into a bit of trouble.
So I read some random tutorials that I found on the internet and combined with previous flawed experience, I attempted to update my phone
I did something like what this tutorial said:
Step 1: Unlock bootloader of and root your Galaxy Nexus. Additionally, flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
Step 2: Go to Settings > About on your Galaxy Nexus and note the Android version and build number.
Now, with that information in hand and knowing whether your GSM Galaxy Nexus is a yakju or takju variant*, go the following thread over on [XDA-Developers ] forum and download the appropriate .zip file to update to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean (Build: JRO03C).
Step 3: Transfer the .zip file to the root of the /sdcard directory on your Galaxy Nexus.
Step 4: Now reboot into ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery.
Step 5: Take a nandroid backup.
Step 6: Choose install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > [file you downloaded in Step 2]. This will flash the Jelly Bean update on your Galaxy Nexus.
Step 7: Once flashing process is complete, select reboot system now from CWM’s main menu.
I'm still not quite sure where I got it so wrong, but after updating to JB, the phone will not recognise my SD card anymore
So if I went into Settings>> Storage, it will say that I only have 80mb of internal storage. (Should be 13.3GB)
When I connected it to my computer and updated my driver, it also only showed 80mb of internal storage.
Basically I panicked and restored my nandroid backup
Can anyone tell me what I did wrong?
There were a few tutorials online that also said updating from 4.0.4 to 4.1 will not wipe out any data. At least now I can prove that bit wrong hahaha
I'm not sure if you were prompted to wipe the phone or if it did it automatically, but the first time you unlock and root your phone it will need to be wiped.
I'm not sure what went wrong but the first time I attempted to root my gnex it failed and I wasn't sure what went wrong. Tried again and it worked fine.
Also, once you root/unlock, I would install titanium backup to keep your apps and data when you flash. Without TB (or other backup), I think the only way to keep data through an update is through the official OTA. But as always, someone on here has likely run into the same problem...

It happened to me so I just used titanium backup to backup my apps, flashed to stock 4.0.4, downloaded the ota file on my PC and flashed it through fast boot temp cmw recovery. Then you can root it and restore your app and settings.

thanks for ur response!
you see, my phone was already rooted and unlocked ages ago, so i basically ignored the first step and jumped straight into recovery mode to install OTA from zip file……
I know everyone tells me to backup using titanium, but i dont really know how to use it, it seems slow and just stops now and then…… i will give it another try……sigh

For best results you should do a full system wipe before flashing a new ROM. Titanium is only needed if you want to backup your apps. Having a nandroid is what's really important. So between running a nandroid and updating to the JB .zip, do a full system wipe and try it if you really want JB.

[Q] Reflash stock 4.3 without losing data

Hey,
my GNex (GSM version) is running very, very slow at the moment. I already tried cleaning the cache and using LagFix, but as fstrim is already included in 4.3, that shouldn't be a problem.
I'm running stock 4.3, rooted but no tweaks or anything applied, root is only for Titanium Backup. My recovery is ClockworkMod 6.0.3.6 non-touch.
So what I'm trying to do is to reflash the stock image as provided by Google, without loosing data, and I'm not sure which steps I should take and before I lose anything I wanted to check back with you if I miss anything.
So, here is how I would do it:
1: Unlock bootloader. It has been unlocked to root the phone, but is locked with the BootUnlocker app. (We don't wanna lose the unlocked bootloader, right?)
2: Nandroid backup. Can't hurt, I guess. Should not really be needed, but better safe than sorry.
3: Run a full Titanium Backup. Store it somewhere safe (not on the phone.)
4: Backup all the data from the device. Problem here is, Windows Explorer crashes if there are many files it should copy, so has anybody a idea how to overcome this?
5: Download factory image and flash it. There are enough tutorials on that around here.
6: Booting the device first time, but let it be offline and not adding a google account. (Is that right?)
7: Reroot the device. Also enough tutorials.
8: Let Titanium Backup work its magic.
9: Restore data to internal storage.
10: Add google-account.
So, is that right, the right order, did I miss anything? Thanks for your thoughts on this!

Unable to apply latest OTA Stock Update (or re-root now)

I've run into an issue that thus far I have been completely unable to resolve. I usually run Cyanogen Mod or other Custom ROM but decided to stick with stock on this one (I'm regretting it now). I am on Stock 4.1.2, Build JZ054K and previously had it rooted. I performed the un-root from within SuperSU so that I could apply the latest OTA, but the update still fails saying that my phone is suspected of rooting. At this point I decided to just re-root, stick Clockwork recovery on and move to Cyanogen Mod but so far every root method I've tried has failed.
Right now I am unable to OTA upgrade because it thinks it's still rooted and I can't re-root for some reason. I can't get a good Titanium Backup to save all of my data since it's not rooted and I have about exhausted my options and was about to do a factory reset when I thought about seeing if someone might have any ideas I could try.
Here are my re-root attempts (I've used every method I could find): I decided to boot into one of my Windows partitions instead of Linux since most of the root methods were windows based and with the E980-Universal-Root attempt: it found the device attached in Charge Mode, I then changed it to MTP and hit Enter (after waiting a few minutes as recommended in a number of the threads), then it it displays "adbd cannot run as root in production builds" and fails. I then tried the ZV9-ZVB-Root method (it looks like it's the same as the Universal Root and it gave the same error also). Then I attempted the motochopper method: it found the device, pushed the exploit successfully, pushed root tools successfully said it was rooting the phone then it stated [-] Failure and performed cleanup.
I'm not sure where to go from here, so I was hoping that some of the experts here could point me in a direction to go before I have to wipe it and lose my data since I can't even perform a Titanium Backup now.
I've been trying other backup methods but haven't found one that will give me a good backup like Titanium (saving the apps and data). If I can't get it rooted, does anyone know of a backup method that I could use to save the individual apps and data? Then I can just do a factory reset, root and move to a custom recovery and ROM like I really should have done at the beginning.
Thanks for any help at all, it is much appreciated!!
Check out the app called Helium (made by the same developer as clockworkmod and Rom manager and was formerly called Carbon). It should allow you to backup without root.
Also, look up the root method called towel root if you haven't yet. It will be an app that you install and it roots from there. I used it to root the latest update.

Many thanks!! I hadn't run across towel root, I'll do some searching and find it and give it a try. I had just looked at Helium earlier today, that might just save me a huge hassle if towel root doesn't work!
Thanks again!!
Thank-You CapnPez!
TowelRoot worked fine, I can now update my Titanium Backups and move to CM...
Many Thanks! I appreciate the recommendation!!

[Q] Do a nandroid backup without root

Hey, I want to root my device, and for that I need to go back to 4.4, but I didn't want to lose all my stuff.
Is it possible to do a full nandroid backup (or atleast the /data partition) so I can restore it when I'm back at bump'd 5.0?
I discovered a adb command called "backup", not sure how it goes though

You can save your installed apps and data with Helium (Pro) to the cloud or sdcard for instance. Copy pics/video`s and music to the pc and place it back after you flashed a rom later. A full backup cannot be done without root.

bujt the problem is i when i flash the SU.ZIP by TWRP recovery i got nothing i flashed 3 SU.ZIP'S but no root
anyone know what to do wether to backup up games data or REroot the device again ?
@khaledreno download helium by carbon, they works without root.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=en
https://www.clockworkmod.com/carbon
install both of them on your tab 3 and pc,and then connect your tab 3 to pc and then open up the desktop app Helium Desktop. This will allow you to backup your app. You can even back up your game data so that you can have em next time.
I think you better flash it after you done with backing up. Note: Upgrading firmware via ota or kies will remove your root access.
