Sorry to bother u guys, I am no expert at all this root and recovery stuff, but I took on the risk of updating my Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM version 4.04 yakju to Jelly Beans without making proper research and got myself into a bit of trouble.
So I read some random tutorials that I found on the internet and combined with previous flawed experience, I attempted to update my phone
I did something like what this tutorial said:
Step 1: Unlock bootloader of and root your Galaxy Nexus. Additionally, flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
Step 2: Go to Settings > About on your Galaxy Nexus and note the Android version and build number.
Now, with that information in hand and knowing whether your GSM Galaxy Nexus is a yakju or takju variant*, go the following thread over on [XDA-Developers ] forum and download the appropriate .zip file to update to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean (Build: JRO03C).
Step 3: Transfer the .zip file to the root of the /sdcard directory on your Galaxy Nexus.
Step 4: Now reboot into ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery.
Step 5: Take a nandroid backup.
Step 6: Choose install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > [file you downloaded in Step 2]. This will flash the Jelly Bean update on your Galaxy Nexus.
Step 7: Once flashing process is complete, select reboot system now from CWM’s main menu.
I'm still not quite sure where I got it so wrong, but after updating to JB, the phone will not recognise my SD card anymore
So if I went into Settings>> Storage, it will say that I only have 80mb of internal storage. (Should be 13.3GB)
When I connected it to my computer and updated my driver, it also only showed 80mb of internal storage.
Basically I panicked and restored my nandroid backup
Can anyone tell me what I did wrong?
There were a few tutorials online that also said updating from 4.0.4 to 4.1 will not wipe out any data. At least now I can prove that bit wrong hahaha
I'm not sure if you were prompted to wipe the phone or if it did it automatically, but the first time you unlock and root your phone it will need to be wiped.
I'm not sure what went wrong but the first time I attempted to root my gnex it failed and I wasn't sure what went wrong. Tried again and it worked fine.
Also, once you root/unlock, I would install titanium backup to keep your apps and data when you flash. Without TB (or other backup), I think the only way to keep data through an update is through the official OTA. But as always, someone on here has likely run into the same problem...

It happened to me so I just used titanium backup to backup my apps, flashed to stock 4.0.4, downloaded the ota file on my PC and flashed it through fast boot temp cmw recovery. Then you can root it and restore your app and settings.

you see, my phone was already rooted and unlocked ages ago, so i basically ignored the first step and jumped straight into recovery mode to install OTA from zip file……
I know everyone tells me to backup using titanium, but i dont really know how to use it, it seems slow and just stops now and then…… i will give it another try……sigh

For best results you should do a full system wipe before flashing a new ROM. Titanium is only needed if you want to backup your apps. Having a nandroid is what's really important. So between running a nandroid and updating to the JB .zip, do a full system wipe and try it if you really want JB.

Specs: I had Galaxy Nexus LTE 4.0.4 w/ unlocked bootloader and root access. I have the GN toolkit if that helps.
Cause: I used the Font Installer app to change system font. I now know that not all of the fonts are working properly and emailed the developer about it. However, I am currently stuck in a boot loop after changing to one of the fonts.
I would prefer to not lose everything and if I didn't care about that, then I would just go for it and I think that I could get it working again. But since it was just a font change, I thought it might be possible to fix it without going through all of that. I am hoping I can just change some system files or something and get it to boot then select a different .tff font that I know works. THANKS!
If I reload the 4.04 update.zip that I still can access, will that wipe everything/will I have to re-setup a bunch of things? Is it OK to clear cache partition and Dalvik Cache? Thank you.
Did you take a nandroid backup of this ROM at any point? If so, you could do an advanced restore of system only.

No, unfortunately I did not, but I will look into that once I am back up and running.
**EDIT: I have CWM Recovery v5.5.0.4 running now. Is it possible to do a backup at THIS point in time and then restore everything but system?

Okay. In that case, flashing the ROM's update.zip should work and shouldn't wipe your data. Best to take a nandroid backup first, just in case of trouble.

Ok I made the backup first. When I try to load the update.zip though, it says, "assert failed: appy_patch_check("/system/fonts/Roboto-Regular.ttf" <then a whole BUNCH of numbers and letters which I can type out if they will actually be helpful> "E:Error in /sdcard/Download/update.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted."
Is that an incremental update.zip for upgrading? What you need is a zip containing the entire ROM.
Alternately use fastboot to flash system.img from the stock ROM if you were already using stock.

You can download another zip to your computer and use adb push to get it onto the GN's internal storage.
I don't have the CDMA version but here's what I am able to find. Check this thread:

A completely stock 4.0.4 (aside from root, busybox, de-odex) from that thread is here:

So you download that to your computer and put it in the same folder as adb. Boot the phone into Clockwork Recovery and then plug it into your computer. (There are other guides to getting adb to work on your phone so I won't cover that here.) Run adb devices to make sure it sees your phone. In Clockwork you also have to go to mounts and storage and make sure /data is mounted.
Then:
adb push GalaxyNexusCDMA-4.0.4-StockRootedNoRadio.zip /sdcard/stock.zip
Subsequently in Clockwork, you will be able to find that stock.zip in the list of zips you can apply. After applying that zip, any damage caused by messing with the fonts should be reverted.

Inside that archive is a system.img file which you can flash to the phone by fastboot over USB. Immediately afterwards, you would then boot into CWM and apply the incremental update.zip you already have on there. This will take you to stock 4.0.4 unrooted and hopefully bootable!

While your instructions were good, I tried some things on my own about 20 min before you made that post and screwed up and erased userdata. So, I cannot say for sure if it would have worked, but I bet it would have and I wish I had been more patient.
Sorry to hear. Is it bootable now at least?
The userdata erase problem is why I now have to remember in every phone recovery situation - adb pull the entire contents of internal storage from within CWM before doing anything risky.

Yeah the phone has booted, I just have to spend some time recovering what I can. I will hopefully make better backups for the future. At least I learned some stuff. I still can't believe this was all caused by changing a FONT in a program designed to change fonts.

Right, well this font changer program edits the system partition of your phone, which makes it risky. In the future, the best course of action with any "risky" change is:
- Take a nandroid backup first.
- Copy the nandroid backup out of the phone (it's in a subfolder of clockworkmod on internal storage).
- If you are doing anything that leads you to fear that the whole internal storage could get blanked, copy all of that out of the phone too.
- Now if you can't boot, you can selectively restore the system partition or the whole thing to try and fix it.
- And now if your internal storage gets blanked, your backup is safe.

Yeah I had no idea that there was a significant risk involved, otherwise I would have been more cautious. Some questions I have:
-With Titanium Backup, the only thing I need to be running batch backups of is all user apps + system data correct? And only restore apps not system data unless I am on the exact same ROM as before?
-Again with TB, is there stuff it consistently misses that I should backup manually?
-I always launched CWM Recovery through the GN toolkit using "6. Flash CWM Recovery, Standard." And sometimes I would select Recovery from the Fastboot menu and it would be back at the regular recovery. Is there a different way I should have been going about getting to the nandroid backup?
-I have now installed ROM Manager and hit "Flash CWM Recovery" and I have a nandroid backup when I reboot into recovery. Does this mean any time I choose Recovery from the Fastboot menu that it will boot into CWM Recovery?

My phone is already rooted with Rom Manager (clockwork mod), SuperSU and titanium backup pro
Now correct me if i am wrong but these are the steps i must take?
- nandroid backup first
- backup all the apps using titanium backup pro's batch process.
- backup sd card files to computer
- flash Xenon HD (don't know how to do this.)
- restore apps using Titanium backup
I know i missed some steps there, but i hope someone here can give me a correct way of doing this.
Please tell me how do i update to Xenon HD on my phone.
Skip the whole copy sd files to your computer thing. Completely unnecessary.
Honestly I'm not sure what's not self-explanatory about clockworkmod recovery. Just factory reset then install the zip. Couldn't be any easier.
Step one, research how to install a custom recovery then check back here with questions. You aren't doing anything without a custom recovery.

That looks right. To flash, first download the ROM zip file, then go to "install zip from sdcard" (or something similar to that effect) in CWM and select the zip. Depending on the ROM, you might also need to download and flash gapps before rebooting and restoring apps from Titanium; check the OP of the ROM thread to determine whether you need to flash gapps.

I recently just Rooted my phone!! Yay...I know, it's about time...Well, I'm trying to understand this stuff as I go about this journey...Basically I bought this phone once it came out..(Oct. 2011) I had the original Gingerbread 2.3.6 on it.. periodically getting the updates and installing them till I was on the ICS 4.0? whatever one came out in Aug-Sept 2012. With that said, I had some issues and wanted to go backwards, which I did successfully using ODIN..that's where I stayed for the last 5 months or so....
I actually had a hard time trying to get the super user 3.0.7 installed, so I had to use an older CWM (recovery-cmw-hercules.tar) which allowed me to install the SU...
I guess I needed to be on ICS in order for the latest one's to work. I now want to install ICS (the latest one) in order to try out some ROM's and was wondering:
1. Once I upgrade to ICS from GB, will I have to Root all over again?
2. Will my Nandroid back up still work if I restore it from back up in the Recovery Area? reinstalling all my apps and data for apps?
3. I'm using Titanium Back up too, so does this mean, that once I Nandroid back up, I can wipe it as many times as I want, I can just restore all my stuff using the Nandroid back up/ Restore?
I was going to use the last 2 of the followling: ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0.2.7 or ClockworkMod Touch Recovery 6.0.2.7 or TWRP Touch Recovery 2.4.1.0 again, as I tried them before, the Super User didn't work..But understand that these 2 will, when I update...

You'll be able to keep your data if updating from Kies. I don't know if your root will stick, but it's a simple task to reroot it.

1. I'm 99% sure u will lose root. BUT that's my opinion and you need the fact so wait till someone else answers. However I don't see the harm in re-rooting. As stated before - quite simple.
2. No if u restore a nandroid back up u would undo ur progress and go back to gingerbread - the exact state in which you created the backup.
3. If you are using Titanium and all u need backed up is ur apps and data then ur set. Doing a nandroid backup is just a safety net in case ur update to ICS goes wrong. If your update goes well then that backup is now useless. If it goes wrong then u restore your backup to gingerbread and try the whole process again. So in summary - Nandroid for system backup , Titanium for apps and data. Also, as long as you don't wipe ur internal storage or SD card u will always have ur titanium back ups saved and therefore can wipe in recovery as much as u want since it only effects the system partition.
I see your confusion lies in differentiating between a nandroid backup and apps/data backup and what each one is for. Hope I cleared it up. Good luck

Yes!! Thanks!! You cleared up a lot of questions I had. I also answered some of my own by just doing things with trial and error, but you also answered and cleared things up for me...Thanks!!!
First of all I am a novice when it comes to this sort of thing. I was running Paradigm 2.3.5. Created a clockworkmod backup using version 5.0.x.x (can't remember the exact version). I then wiped data, wiped cache, installed Paradigm 3.1, installed gapps, and booted. Well I decided I wasn't ready to re do everything I have done to my phone and I wanted to go back to my previous backup. I restarted into recovery, but when I attempted a recovery I get no files found. The files are still there if I look through a usb connection. I understand this has something to do with the /0 folder and moving from 4.1 to 4.2 android. I'm not sure what to do here I just want to restore my phone to before all of this mess. I also understand there are other topics on this issue, and I have been looking through them for hours now, but I can't seem to get anything to work. Please help.
Edit: I was able to download a file manager and transfer the clockwork backups into the correct clockwork folder and then restore to my previous rom. I still would like to know if it is possible to flash a new rom without losing all of your files and apps.

You shouldn't lose your files if you wipe unless you wipe sdcard (in a custom recovery). You can save data and apps with titaniumbackup.

Yes I never lost any files they were still on my sdcard, but there was an sdcard\ and an sdcard\0 with duplicate folder except one of the duplicates were empty. So your saying if I do a back up with titaniumbackup then flash a new rom that uses android 4.2.2 or 4.3 I can then restore with titaniumbackup and have all my old data and apps on the new rom?
Do a search on the GNEX Development forum for the current version of CWM. 6.0.4.0 was just posted earlier today.

Think of CWM as an image bu of your phone. If something messes up when you flash that latest rom, you can restore the bu and all will be back to the way it was pre-flash. TiBU will backup your apps and data, so after you do a clean flash you can restore them. My personal preference for a clean flash is to let the Play Store restore my apps, then use TiBU to restore the data for my user apps. I've found TiBU to be a bit of a crap shoot when it comes to system apps. There's always a bit of work involved with a clean flash, but it's not too much and will usually save some headaches.

Well this weekend I decided to flash CM 10.2. I backed up to titanium, I backed up to cwm latest version, factory reset, flashed CM 10,2, flashed gapps, booted, play store repopulated my apps. Open titanium backup "no backups found", tell it to detect the backup folder on whole device, no backups found. So I just ran my cwm restore and when I boot I get a whole new error. When I try to browse my files with astro file browser I get "cannot downgrade database from 2 to 1". What is wrong now?

I just tried to do another cwm backup because I was going to move around some files through usb, it took forever and then in the end failed because the boot image was messed up. It said something about free space so I deleted all but the most recent cwm backup and then the backup that failed before was able to finish. After doing that I booted again and I was able to browse my files with astro again. So that isn't an issue anymore, but there has got to be something wrong with my file structure that this keeps happening.
I have two 0 folders, is that normal. From root I have storage\sdcard0\0\0 and that contains my data from before I started any of this flashing from 4.1. storage\sdcard0\0 has duplicate folders of storage\sdcard0\0\0 but they are empty. There is also a folder called sdcard in the root folder. So obviously there is a huge mess here. Is there a tool I can run to clean it up, or can someone tell me how the file structure is supposed to be so I can just move things back the the way it should be.

I ended up copying the files in the deepest 0 folders out to the 0 folder above them then removing the deepest 0 folder. I now have sdcard\0 which only has a clockworkmod folder with a recovery file in it, and storage\sdcard0\0 which when I go into the 0 folder I get routed to sdcard\0. Everything seems to be working fine still. I'm thinking about just combining the sdcard0 with the sdcard and removing the sdcard0 since I'm currently on android 4.1. Then with everything cleaned up I might give it another go.
My Nexus 7 (2013) Wifi+3G tablet has had a notification for me to update to 5.0.2 from 4.4.3 for several months now, and I've tried to upgrade it for quite a while....but it won't allow me to do it. It does have root, using TWRP as my recovery, but that's all I've done to it.
In fact, when it does the reboot, it comes up with this:
Does anyone know why it does this? How I can fix this, short of manually sideloading 5.0.2?
Because you are rooted there is no way to OTA update. You can manually flash Android 5.1.1 factory image using Nexus Root Toolkit on your PC but because you are on KitKat and want to flash Lollipop, it is necessary to completely wipe your device when flashing a new factory image to avoid all software problems . My advice before doing that is to copy all important files from your device storage to your PC. Also backup the apps you want using Titanium Backup and copy its folder to your PC as well. The use Nexus Root Toolkit to flash the 5.1.1 factory image. After it has done that, you can also use it to Root and flash TWRP.

I am in the same boat...kitkat and newly rooted...love ability to boost the VOLUME! Would love to OTA to 5.1.1 but 5.02 is stuck in the chamber and, from what you say, wouldn't update anyway! I'm comfortable on PC but making changes on Nex7 gives me the shakes!
So in order to get 5.1.1 and re-root (?) I need to do the following:

Please give specific directions on how to do this and what "important files" I'd wanna copy to PC.

I downloaded Titanium but have yet to utilize. OK to backup ALL my apps or are most sitting on Google Play anyway? How to decide?

Confused here...by "root" do I go use something in the toolkit? Also use it to "flash" TWRP again?
