I am currently running the 5.1 version of the Digital High GPE rom and would like to flash the stock kernel. I looked some on htcdev but all I found was the kernel source. Is there any place that I can find a flashable zip that will install the stock kernel? Thanks!

You can find a firmware zip there with the stock boot img included.

Awesome! So I extracted the boot.img from the zip file. Now, just to confirm, all I have to do is use the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and I should be set with the stock kernel? Thanks!

That would be correct.
Don't forget to flash the matching stock modules too !

Which is why extracting the boot.img from the GPE ROM as I stated in the thread that I linked to is the better option.

The kernel will have to be 4.0.2 compatible, but yes you can do it.

No. You will have to flash back the stock kernel for the update to install automatically.

The stock kernel is part of the boot.img file in the factory images. Extract it for the version of Android that you are on, and flash it.
Can i use toolkit to flash BOOT.IMG files required for running custom roms???
By placing them in "KERNEL" folder and renaming it...

Yes. Just confirm it. OTA will update on its own. It's a small package, too, so the update should take short time.

You don't need modules, as you are on stock ROM. Recovevery is available in xda (sorry, can't post you a link at the moment). Make sure it matches your base (it should be 3.14).
About the sequence - you are right.
However, the easiest way for you might the the nandroid. And I would recommend it to you.
Also, once you update, and before installing custom kernel/ROM, make one backup for yourself. It will make your life much easier in future.
If you flashed the XM kernel + modules you need to put back the stock kernel AND the stock modules

Download the whole rom and unzip it, you'll find a file call boot.img
Extract it out and flash that to your device in fastboot by using fastboot flash boot boot.img

you are forgetting the modules !
I'm playing around with a number of configurations on my phone and need to get a hold of a stock kernel. I'm bouncing between 4.16.1540.8 and 4.16.401.10. I do have a system dump of 4.16.401.10 - not sure if there's something in there I'm not seeing.
Any ideas?

boot.img is the kernel not the bootloader. If you open any rom around here you will find the boot.img included

Yes of course they are, the "kernel" in its completeness exists of the :
Boot.img file and the kernel module files which are indeed inside the rom.
Thought you would know that as you released a rom on the HTC one X ?
