Getting the one M9 today... - Verizon HTC One (M9)

Getting the M9 today like the title says and I wanted to know if there is anything that I should do once I get it? (Aside from disabling all Verizon bloat of course)

Unless there's someone with a java card near you or you're willing to ship, that's really all you can do for now. Take a look at the M9 Java Card thread to see if there's anyone near you.

Def get S-off with someones Java Card and then you off and running! It is a great phone!

Download yourself some cool apps and games and go at it!

Scared to root

Hey guys, I really want to root my phone mainly to get rid of the 30 fps cap and to get rid of the bloatware etc... but I am completely illiterate when it comes to this stuff and I know I will just mess up my phone. Is there any way to find out if someone can do this for me locally or something of the sort? I already read the unrevoked method, but still looks too complicated and I wouldnt know what to do afterwards. Any help is appreciated.

Need help rooting EVO

I just updated my EVO to 2.3.3 without knowing that unrevoked can't root it. I was just curious if anyone knows if there is any way to root the EVO with the most recent update? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-Kire
You can't root or downgrade the OTA yet, you'll have to wait.
If you had to guess, how long will it take? I'm just really anxious to root my phone and put Cyanogen 6-7 on it lol.
In the same boat. Just got a replacement phone today.
It sucks, I just want to root my phone lol. I mean I love sense, don't get me wrong but I just like to completely customize my phone. As well as get more apps.

I told the chick at best buy I didn't even want her to take mine out of the box. She tried to say she had to in order to activate it, but I told her no.
She didn't have a choice then.
That's funny. It's good you went to best buy, if you went to the actual sprint store they'd be like, um no. Lol.

I got mine from the Sprint store and started talking indepth Android with the guy and confused him so much that he just handed me the box without opening it. Haha
so where is our root? I would like to know this> This is not acceptable.
I would like to know where our root is as well. It is quite unacceptable. It should have been done before or directly after the update was released.

I'm sorry, but this is what's unacceptable. It's not like you have some God given right to root your phone, and how dare someone not dedicate more of there time towards helping you, for free at that. I mean, what do you think is going to happen? A developer is going to read your post and think, "oh ****, he's irritated, I better get on the ball!"
Yeah, probably not. It's still a sweet phone, just relax and enjoy it. There's more than enough to do to keep you occupied.

Why not pool money for Java cards instead of phones for developers!?

Why not pool money for Java cards instead of phones for developers!?
I mean think about it. Its a sure proven method of getting s-off and unlocks. Instead of trying to pay for developers new phones and expecting them to hack their way to unlocking and s-offing our devices. Just pool money for java cards to trusted developers and send our phones to them in the same manner sonic is. I understand the risk of shipping. My idea could be wrong thats why im asking for input. What are some of your thoughts on this idea.

Trust plays a major role, along with time without a phone. The more phones in the hands of developers, the quicker someone will come up with a way to circumvent our problem with bootloader and s-off to be made available to the public.
We'd still need to ship our phones out. I dont have a backup smartphone (I sell all of mine in order to buy the next one) so I can't send mine out, as much as I want too
And I'm pretty sure java cards are more expensive than the phone

this is a great thought.
but the fact would still remain.
it's the same process that sonic is doing..
and for a hell of a great price... (from sonic)
If we were to purchase these cards rather than dev phones. what happens when we get that 4.3 update with a new hboot, ppl will take that OTA and then wonder why they lost root. and that $1300 java card is now essentially worthless (correct me if I am wrong please)
but either way, if we buy these cards, the devs now have no way of finding the exploits for a future software s-off..
also you would still need to send your phone out..
I for one have 100% faith in sonic.
His mother works at the USPS,
and with $600 insurance on the phone going both ways, I am not too worried.
I wrapped my phone up nicely in the box the phone came in then wrapped some bubble wrap around that and am now on my way to the post office to send sonic my phone.
The guy is just trying to make this community more successful and he took the initiative to buy the card, and we owe this man a huge amount of gratitude.
Sonic thank you again for everything you are doing for us,
it's not easy having to do all these phones for everyone,
when a DEV gets s-off their work is done, they sit back let the users mess with it, we are sending our devices to him which takes time to be careful with the phones, and then s-off each phone. and all this was done very professionally IMHO, with the website, and it only works out better with his Mother working at the main Post Office.
thank you again Sonic, can't wait to get my phone back!

IIRC they can't "patch" JavaCards since its a bootloader function and is used internally by HTC in a lot of phones. However, if they somehow got ahold of mine/someone else's CardID, they could "disable" the card so no phones read it as valid via an OTA or something.
Either way, this wouldn't really help devs unless they cracked the many levels of cryptology on that card and found out how to clone it to a normal SD.

Which is understandable. But i feel i would rather send my phone to you ( which i did) and have you use the javacard rather than sending it somewhere to get jtaged. The HTC one is one of the most difficult phones to take apart. Almost all tear down videos of the htc mentioned that they had broken at least one or two to finally get it done right.
On the subject of the javacard, what are the possibilities of someone cloning a javacard as appose to cracking the htc ones bootloader? Is one easier than the other?
Has anyone heard if the REVONE developers are working on our phones?
VZW was out of stock when I called to get a replacement because of my camera, so I'm debating on just waiting for the 4.3 to fix my camera or keep calling til they have stock again.
If I read all this correctly, if I send out my phone for S-Off and accepted the OTA for the sake of the camera issue, will I keep S-Off? If I have root when the OTA comes I know I'd lose that, but as long as I could keep S-Off I'd be able to re-root, correct?

It is technically possible for them to get rid of S-OFF, but I don't believe that they ever have, nor given any indication that they ever will. And yes, so long as you have S-OFF, you will be able to re-root.

[Q] What use is a free HTC 1 M8?

But seriously, I have a year-old review unit here and I don't use Sprint personally. So I can use it to play with Android distros, or as a very small tablet, or make it into a remote-control for my TV. What's the most amusement one can get from an off-the-air M8?
And is the Harmon-Kardon branding just advertising, or does it actually have better sound than other phones?

Use it as a phone.
And yeah, it's just an advertisement. Only difference is some addition of their software which can be installed on other M8s too.
Why not just use it as the great phone that it is or is this just a wind up?

No wind-up, just that it's locked to Sprint, I have ATT, and so I'd have to SIM-unlock it before I could use it. It was a leftover review unit.

Review unit? Can you please link me the review?
And what phone do you use currently? It might be wworth to get it unlocked.
You can use it as a music player too. It's one of the best Android music phone.
Surely it would be well worth unlocking the phone, where else are you going to get such a top spec device for the small price of an unlock?
I paid a ton of money for this phone 12 months ago and it is still one of the best on the market.
@crazykas
Not s-off yet. I haven't found a method other than sunshine which is $25 and, from what I read, has a spotty reputation. A question: If I got it s-off, instead of that sim unlock (that article is in my list for the m8) should I change the CIM and (DIM?) so it thinks it's an ATT Developer phone? Would that let it use ATT?
EDIT: Now that I re-read this, the $25 isn't that much, and the worst that can happen is that I'm left with a brick that I didn't pay for! But do you know of any self S-off method?

A year later they're just dust-gatherers.
I'm pretty happy with my current Galaxy S4, but it's great having a phone that I can load anything on to and not worry that if I brick it I'll be left without a phone or lose a couple of hundred dollars. For example, installing assorted versions of TWRP on this particular phone makes it hang permanently, power and display on, entering recovery. But it works with Clockwork Mod. Now I'm playing with CyanogenMod for the first time.

If you're using an S4, IMHO, you must upgrade to this phone. It's plenty fast (I bet miles better in performance than S4) for 2015. Only thing you'll miss is the pretty cool camera in your current phone.
Thanks for the links.
Smelly feet! SunShine doesn't work with CyanogenMod; it asks for a stock rom. Fortunately, lots of stocks to choose from. Back to stock, run Sunshine, S-OFF, back to Cyanogen. Here goes...
EDIT: Well, I gave up. I've flashed four different ROMs and had startup hang at four different places. CyanogenMod works fine. Since I can't get back to stock (some idiot forgot to do a backup before flashing Cyanogen, no excuse, I've been in this business for decades) and Sunshine won't run under Cyanogen, no S-off.
If anyone can point me to a back-to-stock or a ROM that I can load with Clockwork or RUU, it would make me happy. I've got the Harmon Kardon Sprint model, which may be a problem. I've tried roms from Bad Seed, the ND8_STOCK_DEODEXED_ROOTED rom, Renovate_5.0, and cm-11-20141112-SNAPSHOT-M12-m8 . I got so frustrated that I didn't keep page links for these, which I know I should put for reference. The only reason I want to go back to stock is that Sunshine seems to require it. I'm awfully glad that, as I've posted before, this is a don't-care device.
EDIT TWO: Anyone sick of my train-of-thought posting process can leave now. I left Renovate in its stuck mode for a while, and half an hour later it was on. Hurrah! Now to try Sunshine...
Update - it needed a recent RUU from HTC. Year-old firmware was slow with current ROMs and not compatible with TWRP at all. Recent RUU, good behavior. It's s-off, and I'll go for sim unlock tomorrow.

Bought a used M9 and its really messed up

I bought a used HTC One M9, and everything seems to work fine until I try to update it (Its on Android 5.0.2) it looks normal but then goes to this screen (See attached photo). I guess the phone has S-off? I'm not really very good with any of this stuff, if anyone can help me get back to stock so I can get OTA's that'd be great. I tried doing all the research I could but have gotten nowhere. The phone is an unlocked model, I was told it's a developers edition but IDK how to tell the difference. There is no carrier branding so I'm assuming he didn't lie, and that the phone actually is unlocked. If anyone can help it'd be very greatly appreciated, I planned to use this phone as my main phone but I cant use it on almost 3 year old software.

Not to be polemic but, writing: "its still screwed up" don't help at all. Too much links and redirects? Well, write it about. Suggest some own ideas, if you have one.
Maybe you lost THIS.
