A friend of mine dropped her Defy on to a stone floor from a few feet.
The screen broke with several cracks from the impact point. Strangely, the phone still works fine although it's a little uncomfortable swiping across the cracks!
I thought these phones used gorilla glass? Is that not the case?
Wasn't there a vid of a Defy being run over on Youtube?
Very disappointing and worrying seeing as I got my GF one for Christmas based on its ruggedness.
Regards,
Richard
PS It was a T-Mob UK version that broke if that makes any difference.
I've seen such a video which featured the Defy being run over and still working, although the screen was pretty smashed...
I've read a few reports elsewhere of screens breaking from relatively small drops. I guess they are ruggeder than most, but not all that...
Gorilla Glass isn't indestructible, just more resistant to it than regular glass. Even in this marketing video the screen was cracked (although still intact enough to resist the water attack afterwards)
You can probably get a replacement glass facing from Motorola. Well they must have quite a few spares around given the hubbub with the failed earpieces (that needs a full glass replacement)
So... any one got an idea as to how difficult it is to swap the glass?

Personally I wouldn't try to change the glass myself due to the water tight seal.
Take it to your dealer and let them deal with it. Even if they charge you for the work it might be worth it not voiding the warranty.

Replace broken glass
Here is a video clip of me trying to replace a broken glass. The first part is only the disassemble. Check youtube for more.
Good effort!
It looks like getting the glass out of the front cover is quite hard. I was sure you were going to cut yourself...
Where did you source the replacement glass from? Did it come in a kit with the glue etc.?
R.
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant not shatter proof, there is a massive difference.
Well it wasn't that hard. I found the replacement glass on ebay, search for defy digitizer. Unfortunately there was no adhesive included so the final result was not so very nice. The new glass got a bit dirty from the adhesive I used. Here you can se the final result and the assemble:
The OEM adhesive is available from globaldirectparts, however you have to buy 5pcs minimum. At $5, it's affordable, but not cheap considering it's only a really thin piece of sticky foam. On other forums, people have used silicone-based glue, still maintaining waterproofness.
Many Broken screens
I've broken my motorola defy screen a few times, and collected experiences on www.motoroladefy.eu
vids for how to fix and links to the parts I ordered that worked.
If you go for display with front cover, don't forget to move the earpiece!
I'm a bit disappointed in the gorilla glass used in my Defy. I've had the phone for a little over a month and haven't abused it, but last week I noticed a squiggly hairline crack about a 1/4 of an inch long and it has slowly gotten longer since I first noticed it. The day that it happened it was in my pocket with my keys and may have been subjected to some pressure, but nothing significant.
Since this is supposed to be a scratch-proof phone do you think there is any way I can get it replaced under warranty? I purchased it new from T-Mobile just over a month ago. Either way, I'm very disappointed that it scratched so easily.
I have read of a few instances where people where able to have their phones replaced due to the glass scratching as it is marketed as a scratch resistant phone.
It is scratch resistant, not scratch proof, nevermind crack.

Exactly right.
For the glass to have cracked, there must have been a fair amount of pressure applied to it and there's no way Motorola or anyone else is going to accept responsibility for that.
As for scratch resistance, I've taken a stanley knife to a Galaxy S (also has Gorilla glass) and there was minimal scratching, very difficult to tell it had been 'attacked'.
My GF managed to scratch her Defy within days of getting it. Just by keeping it in her handbag with all the usual girlie junk. It lives in a protective slip case now!

The treatment gorilla glass goes through in the manufacturing process makes it ever so slightly more prone to cracking/spiderwebbing if dropped. You can not have scratch proof AND shatter proof.
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Well you could, it's just that then the glass wouldn't be clear.
and wouldn't be called "glass".
I noticed a small scratch from being in my jean pocket. I think those sands particles that were used to sands blast the jeans scratched against the screen. Anyhow it was at d2 of the ownership so I just got exchanged for a neW phone. Lesson learned and now I have a screen protector plus phone case.
Firstly please check the link..
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire-3077.php
so..as u can see our Desire's screen glass is Gorilla glass confirmed only by gsmarena and i also checked other sites but none of them contain this spec.
so i'm kinda confused regarding this, coz i dont want to use my phone with plastic screen which protector worn out within few days and have to change over and over again..
so what is ur xperience using Desire without any screen protector?
Just NO. Yep, sure it doesn't get scratched by keys and knives, but if you keep it in your pocket thin and sharp dust particles can be deadly. A friend of mine tried to go without a screen protector, and after a month or so there were a few light scratches...guess what happens if you go on like that for a year or so. Also, the first time you go to the seaside you're screwed: so happened to my gf with her brand new ipod touch, which now has a big nice smile in the middle of the screen...dust/sand particles are really dangerous, even for gorilla glass, believe me.
Firstly a screen protector wont 'wear out' within a few days, unless you have finger nails like edward scissorhands then itll last for months before needing to be changed.. ive had my cheap protector on for 3 months already and its still as good as new.. not bad whan it was something like a quid for 6.. and when i do come to change it I know theres still a pristine screen underneath.
Secondly even if it is so called gorilla glass its not immune to getting scratched, isnt it best to have an extra layer that can get scratched before the glass below it does?
You just have to look at the state of some iphones to realise gorilla glass isnt all its cracked up to be
Absolutely no scratches
My Desire was one of the first delivered last year - and until today there is absolutely no scratches on the glass. And I wear the phone with me every day, it has fallen into the dust etc., etc. The metal frame has scratches, the metal plate around the cover of the camera. But not the front glass. I'm really extremely happy with the glass quality.

You might have been lucky there..ever tried to look at it under a very strong light? Micro scratches aren't very likely to be seen in normal use.
I scrached it with sand so easy and once it felt on flor and got deep and wide scraches on glass and small bumps on metal. When screen is off I can see scraches easy.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I confirm: absolutely no scratches. NO. Not big, not micro. None. Niente. Nada. Nirwana. Gar Nix. Rien du tout.
And if they aren't noticeable under normal light what does it matter
My 1st desire arrived the day after orange put them on sale, so it was one of the 1st. After 2 weeks of keeping it in my suit pocket the screen had some nice scratches on it (probably from a lighter). So I would say all ways have a protector on it, in my case a Zagg which went on my 2nd desire, 1st one got sent back as it was playing up later to be found out it was due to using some power saving app, least the replacement arrived with no scratches and the zagg went straight on.
Someone should do this to their Desire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2EYnUGUti0
Until then, I do not believe this has gorilla glass.

omg!!!! thats brutal!!!
thanks all for helping me to determine weather should i use my desire with or without screen protector....
so the bottom line is our desire actually doesn't have gorilla glass screen and it is not advised from most of u that not to use without screen protector...
Well, tbh i don't know wether it's gorilla glass or not...what i do know about that kind of glass is that it offers a good resistance when you try to break it, and it's overall more durable, otherwise it's like any kind of scratch resistant glass. This said, there's plenty of vids on youtube showing gorilla glass getting scratched (like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EimSyAIuDoI&feature=youtube_gdata_player), so why risking it, i'd say
I'm fairly certain its not Gorilla Glass since I've got a couple fairly big scratches through normal use.

Well, if the scratches are so small one cannot see them under normal conditions then I wouldn't care about them at all...

Well it still means that it can be scratched: if it falls face down on gravel you can be quite sure you'll get something noticeable
Also, maybe tiny scratches won't annoy you, but for sure they will affect screen durability...i mean it could crack more easily you know.
Hey man, i don't wanna be a ****, i just wanna say that all of the superduper hax glass powered devices i had or stumbled across in my long phone nerd career got scratched sooner or later...but hey, at the end of the story it's your baby, not mine
Also its kind of pot luck wether you get a good qualitly screen protector.
I bought mine for like £2 for 6 and they show scratches after a week
whereas my friends ones, which were also bought from ebay for a similar price do not
show one scratch in months, and hes a bmx rider and his phone goes through alot
more than mine. All his friends with iphones have cracked screens so its stronger than
that at least. Ill always use a screen protector anyway, gorilla glass or not.
people...google it. here is a link. my desire has no scratches at all, and i hate screen protectors. i like my phone pure - without anything on it. all the best
I cannot post links, so go to the corning gorilla glass and see the products
the desire definitely does not have gorilla glass. it is very odd that corning who makes gorilla glass says that the desire does have it though that is incorrect as htc has said it does not. i had my desire without a case for a few weeks and it has 2 micro scratches that can only be seen when you shine a light on it while the screen is off. i hate the feel of screen protectors so i just have a plastic case for it and i haven't seen any new scratches on it for over a year.
er...just buy a case, no screen protectors needed. My Desire is 12 months old and not a mark on it. Case I use hardly adds any bulk whatsoever.

Gorilla glass is not unbreakable. Its harder to break then normal glass. Defy is shock proof up to a limit. If your phone falls exactly on the glass there is a big possibility that it will break.
...not broken, but I managed to scratch it.
Bought and few days later, i've noticed very few little tinyhair scratches and 1 deep (a fingernail feel it) 2mm long. just in the middle.
I run with my phone in my pockets but i really take care of it (it was in a sock). I don't know how and what managed to scratch it, but now i have a Brando Screen Protector on it.
When i'll remove it, i'll try fix the scratches with the cerium-oxide polish-method.

that's happened to me too, just some little scratches by the way. However, is it safe to use a polish method?
I kept mine scratch free for a year until my girlfriend started playing with it.
Now I can't count how often it has fallen to the ground.

Okay.....so you broke the glass . What else ?
Herpderp iPad2.
No I don't care if you're anti-Apple.
Glass is hard but nobody told it's not fragile. Do not confuse the two concepts.
isn't it advertised as scratch proof??
I'm very careful with my mobiles ^^
& I was quite peeved after having owned my Defy for 6 weeks to find a scratch on the screen!?
I'm guessing it's happened when ph slipped out of pocket while driving car & slid down side of seat
life proof my r-iss

Some are, some aren't, it's a strange thing :/
My defy+ has 2 scratches, very very small ones, while my brother's one has none, even though I take better care of mine. Both bought at the same time, 2 months ago. Strange thing
I'll say just this - SCREEN PROTECTOR ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_protector
Screen protector all the way
I used my Defy for 2-3 weeks without screen protectors and i got no scratches. I know i am heavy user i put a screen 3M Screen protector. My old HTC Diamond got so many scratches it was a pain to watch it and i really looked after it.
I knew as it had no resistant glass it will become like this. In the Defy i saw a major improvement.
But I can say money well spent with the screen protector. I ripped it off and scratched it badly. As it has a year and a month now i will change it. It lasts 1 year and for 10-15$ i can say it's money well spent.
So my advice: install a 3M, Invisible Shield etc. screen protector. The branded ones have a perfect fit and some technology invested in them. Also scratch resistant certification.
how exactly u broke it?
just to make sure i don't do it
price?
How much costs to u to replace the broken Gorilla glass with a new one?
Did u bought the glass from ebay?
Hello everyone,
As I observe base on Youtube demo of Fixez (At&t model) and Esimon's repair experience, the Optimus G Pro's LCD and digitizer are not glued except only to the screen's edge (black adhesive).
This observation is kinda weird as majority of Giant Manufacturer's like Samsung, HTC, & Sony smartphone's LCD parts are glued to the screen glass.
From a repairing perspective, I applaud LG's for the lack of its LCD's adhesive ingredient and saving me the trouble of separating the LCD and cracked digitizer but In a customer's perspective, I am also doubting the durabilty of the screen and apprehensive of its fragility.
My question is, base on your usage experience, do you think this lack of manufacturer's adhesive makes the Optimus G Pro prone to screen cracks easily in accidental drop of 3 feet and high or low temperature ?
ive dropped mine more than 20 times from desks, tables, car roofs and it also has taken a few dips in water and nothing has happened

Oh Joker, you're joking right?
Are using a tempered glass and Armor Rugged Case ?
I haven't dropped mine but my mother has dropped her quite a few times. Screen doesn't even have a scratch on it. My old LGOG took a dive in the toilet and still worked. Even fell in some frosty mix lol. LG definitely makes good quality devices. Samsung feels too cheap to me.

wish i was, really one time i was washing my hands and talking on the phone same time and i dropped it under the water stream and nothing happened to it. and today i was washing my car and forgot i left the phone like right next to the car. phone was dripping wet and nothing happened. think i might have a design flaw that makes it that good. lol. but seriously this phone has been handled by my kids and they are crazy and it has been great not even a scratch on the naked screen

well a 2 piece case rubber and hard frame. 8$ ebay case no screen protectors i hate them
