[Q] AFTV USB Storage issue *SOLVED* - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone had issues using a usb stick?
Trying to free up space by moving apps but box does not seem to acknowledge it being connected. Cheapo 16GB stick. works fine in my PC and on phone and tab using OTG cable. Has been formated. Deleted all partitions, created new primary, then formated again. Still nothing?
Just called Amazon Cust Services who took details to pass to tech support who will contact me within 48 hours.
Any ideas folks?

Not sure. But USB 3.0 flash drives are getting pretty cheap. You can pick up a 32gb sandisk ultra for about 15 bucks at Walmart or 16 for $10. If you don't mind waiting, I'm sure you could find them even cheaper online.
Its not really a solution but the faster the better. Have you done any basic trouble shooting? Maybe remove it then reinsert and wait a couple of minutes? Reboot with USB in, reboot without then insert...if using a hub try it without.
I haven't had any issues but I'd be surprised if aftv mounted every flash drive on the market. That's rarely the case on other devices. Good luck.
*I don't think the format matters. Aftv should automatically format and prepare the drive.

You may want to check in Developer options. I think if you have ADB Debugging or Unknown Sources (can't remember which one) enabled it won't recognize the usb port. At least that was the case with the latest firmware.

BOOM!!!!! Solved. Turned all dev options off and it recognised it straight away. Will check them one by one later on. Thank you good sir!!!!

Extenal Storage

While the Kindle Fire does not have a USB port, there are dongle's like this one that convert Micro USB to regular USB which in theory should allow for support of USB devices. My question is USB storage supported on the Fire?
Im using APKP Milestone 6
Hm, at would depend on whether or not that cable is an otg host cable. If it is, the wring is slightly different, which tells the fire to go into mastemode rather than the usual slave mode.
Another thing is that the software needs to support it. I'm pretty sure the stock ROM does not have this feature, however a great little ROM called GedeROM does have limited support. There have been reported cases of external storage working, however some drives refuse to work. Do some googling and find a drive that does work and buy that one, if you haven't bought one already.

[Q] USB connection Issues

For the past few days i have been racking my brain trying to figure out what went wrong.
For some reason I can no longer connect my phone to my computer to transfer/move files. it acts as if the drivers will not take. when i check the device manager it reads SAMSUNG_Android with the yellow !
I have reinstalled lastest drivers from Samsung site, removed all drivers and tried from Kies software/ rebooted pc and phone countless times. tired my laptop where it use to always work and same results. One this i did notice was at some point i got an error on my internal sd card and that i should format it. I backed up all files via ftp formated the internal sd and tried again.. all with the same results. I have also tried 3 different cables.
PCs both windows 7 one 32bit the other 64.
Phone e4gt rooted FI27, everything else stock
All and Any Help greatly Appreciated.
Here it comes!!
I'm hoping that I'm wrong BUT, that is exactly how my EMMC brick started. Let us know if your phone just shuts down and the only thing you will get is a blue light. There us nothing you can do then but take it back to Sprint for a free replacement. I couldn't figure my USB issues out for maybe a week and then it just died when i plugged it in to transfer photos I'd just taken 30 seconds before it died. Lets hope I'm wrong but I'm writing this with my new phone ate the exact same symptoms with my previous Sammy. Try to get your internal memory backed up now! Boot your CWM and mount your external USB. I wished I'd have.
Try a brand new cable and see if that helps. This phone seems to be especially intolerant of if connections.

I still say try a brand new cable. When I first had this issue I tried 3 or 4 old ones before buying a new one.
Today my brothers nexus s wouldn't charge except with one particular cable. I think that the cable and port are still within individual tolerances but together there is just too much play in the connection.

took your advice and tried a brand new cable. I am stil having the same issue. anything else i can try? I tried with both usb debugging on and off still same issue
Damn, I was sure that'd work. I guess if you were able to back it up it's time for a replacement.

[Q] OUYA USB Port Issues

I just got my kickstarter edition and was trying to sideload apps through usb port in ouya. At first when I plugged in the usb lights went on but nothing showed up on ouya. After fiddling the USB drive and pushing in a bit more, the drive showed up. I realised that any USB I try I have to insert it and fiddle it till it gets a connection and carefully leave it at that angle otherwise it wont detect.
Anyone else facing same issue?

All I tried so far is a FAT32 formatted 16gb USB drive and a USB keyboard. Will try out my 2tb hdd today and let you know if it picks up.
my usb kind of slip and slides out.
its not a tight fit at all, rather loose.

There have been quite a few HW issues (controllers, fan noise, USB, WiFi). People like us (xda folk) can tolerate some of these things, but this stuff is completely unacceptable to the general public. They need to fix this stuff.

android doesn't natively support ntfs in the first place. Samsung and a few other phone/tablet manufacturers add their own ntfs drivers but android on its own doesn't have them and the license for a company to add them is quite expensive (ntfs is patented and needs licensing from Microsoft) so I doubt the ouya has the drivers.
The usb issue sounds like a dodgy connection between the socket and motherboard, most likely a broken solder join (applying pressure as you are will cause further damage btw). An email to ouya support might be in order. Or if you are brave a quick session with a soldering iron should have it sorted easily.
Loose connector can also be fixed by applying pressure to the topside of the socket to bend it inwards but you can do more harm than good, an email might be an idea again.

So what file system other than fat32 does android support cause I was kinda annoyed when my ext3 drives didnt get recognized, I thought they would have drivers for them since its a linux format. So far I've been able to get fat32 and ntfs to work.

That's where some of the advantages of custom kernels come in. They can add support for more filesystems

We don't have a custom kernel yet. When we do, it's pretty straightforward to do in recovery.

FAT16? Thats pretty much it. Ext3 drives do work on android but I think some root + terminal usage is needed first. ExFat and NTFS are both patented so arent guaranteed to work on all devices unless the manufacturer has licensed the patent, technically custom roms adding support for these filesystems would be in violation of the law but I doubt M$ would bother chasing it up.
My usb port its working well. I bough an usb hub with 5 ports and also works too. Now i have connected 2 memory sticks, cable keyboard, cable mouse and 360 xbox controller
This usb hub doesnt need to be outpowered, the own usb port into ouya handles with it without problem
Does anyone know what exact steps I need to follow to get one of theese apps to work? I plan on rooting the ouya I just want to know what I would need to install. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1bGwsMSwyLDYsImNvbS5rd3VsbC5udGZzbW91bnRlciJd https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwxLDEwOSwibmV0LnNoYWp1bC51c2JvdGciXQ.. and would these apps work in mounting ext3?

You don't need that app. From skimming the page I think ouya already does all of that out of the box. Read through the threads about file format compatibility.

I have my 2TB NTFS drive running properly on my ouya but you need 2 things to make it work.
First you have to root your ouya second you need an app called "stickmount".
There are other apps that should work but stickmount works great for me.

yeah I can get up to 2tb working fine with ouya just not above that. Not sure if android is cappable of mounting 3tb+ drives
USB Fix
Hi, I'm not sure how common this problem is. but, here's what fixed me.
First off I emailed OUYA support:
They replied to update firmware and test with wired mouse at "play" screen. at that point if the mouse does not work, you have verified there is a problem with the port itself.
Their next suggestion was to return it to the store where I bought it.
So, Naturally, I took it apart:
BEFORE YOU CONTINUE:: look at the usb port on your assembled console. inside you will see 2 prongs along the inside. they provide the required tension to keep good contact on the 4 usb connections and serve as a ground. Try using a small exacto knife, screw driver, or even a toothpick to bend them in a tiny bit. you want it feel snug when you inset a usb device. Not Tight, you shouldn't have to force it, but it shouldn't feel loose.
IF THAT FIXED YOUR PROBLEM:: then... go have fun! otherwise, read on.
SIDENOTE:: you might want to mark/note the orientation of the the console lid before removing, it's not overly obvious which way it goes on at reassembly.
The USB is part of a USB HDMI unijack, soldered onto the board.
SIDENOTE:: The board is grounded to the frame via a stamped metal prong that acts like a latch preventing you from removing the board. Do yourself a favor, use flashlight, don't break the prong.
Once, you have it out the solder joints you are concerned with are the 4 larger ones in a row (not the 4 that ground the housing of the unijack)
After re-soldering those 4 I can use a 16GB ntfs no problem.
None of my USB Storage Drives would work! My PSx Controller did though.
It required a Factory Reset. Now all my drives are working as they should.
There is a FAT32 format tool posted over in the Ouya Forums:
http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?3589-Formatting-Hard-Drive-to-FAT32&p=35834&viewfull=1#post35834
Format your drive using that tool. If that doesn't work, Factory Reset and try again.

Nandroid Backup w/ limited space

I got the 16 gb version because I thought I would be fine with the limited space. I have been able to live with it up until now. I just tried to make a nandroid and I was unable to because I didn't have enough space. Is there anyway to get around the space issue without getting rid of apps? Can I make the backup straight to my pc?
Just use the nexus root Toolkit (wug's one) it has such option.

I use a USB otg adapted and a usb flash disk for nandroid backups.
That way I can also back up / screw up my 'internal' SD-card without much problems.
No risk of losing the nandroid back up that way. I paid 30 euro's for the adapter and a 64gb stick.
I really like the wug kit but it Sadly doesn't work for the latest version. Is there another one like it that works for the latest version?
I would prefer not to have to buy a USB otg because I wouldn't really use it all that often

the version of what does not work?
The wug kit doesn't work with the January security update. It won't let me backup with it
i just purchased a USB C (male) to USB A (female) adaptor, as well as a 64GB sandisk "utra fit" low profile flash drive specifically for backing up my nandroid backups. with the two pieces together it will be shorter than a typical flash drive - shouldn't be a bad setup. $24 shipped on Amazon prime
I have an OTG cable (picture attached) I got off amazon for $6 and a SanDisk flash drive I got at Walmart or Costco (can't remember which) for $15. Probably the best way of storing backups I've found.
P.S. When making backups, make sure you turn off your PIN/Password/Fingerprint/etc. If you don't, upon restoring your NANDROID it'll constantly ask for your PIN/password but wont unlock.
Thanks for all the replies, I'll go with your suggestions and get a otg cable. It'll be nice to finally have backups again
Just thought that I'd share what I've been using.
Victsing USB Type C to A adaptor ($5.99 on Amazon)
Sandisk Ultra Fit 64GB ($17.59 on Amazon)
Attached are some pics for size comparison to a typically sized flash drive not including a typical adapter.

OTG doesnt work.

Hi guys.
First time I bought USB-OTG adapter from China and tried it, it didnt work for me. I guessed that cable is incorrect and bought another one at shop. CheckR is said that all okay, but it still doesnt work with any flash card.
So I have 2 adapters Type C - USB A, 2 different flash cards, I tried exFAT, NTFS and FAT32, it just connect and disconnect a thousands times but doesnt mount, I could see USB1102 at explorer sometimes but it unmount in 1 second. Any suggestion about it?
I feel sorry about my English, if u cant understand, pls ask me.
Agree. It sounds like a bad cable. Try this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XHOGEZG?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00.
I tried a different one before this and had to send it back.

Reviews seem very hit and miss on that -- lot of folks saying it doesn't work with the 6P. Frustrating. I can't find a Type C OTG cable on amazon that has consistent positive reviews, and Benson seems solely focused on A-to-C cables.

I have a type C adapter that takes an micro SD card and it is working great with my Nexus 5x.
Have you tried opening settings then storage?
With my old Nexus 5 I used StickMount an app by Chainfire to access OTG. MM supports USB but unlike StickMount I couldn't locate my OTG device with my file manager, opening settings then storage I can access OTG.
Just installed StickMount and can access my OTG device with my file manager, so StickMount does work with the Nexus 5x. My preference is using the OTG support built into MM, rather than StickMount.
Hope this is helpful, good luck.
So guys, I have already installed StickMount. I tried once more and it mounted as picture store I saw my files but it been unmounted in 10 seconds.. I think that problem not in cable coz there are few good reviews from n5x owners.
