[Q] Voice Call Microphone Issues - Verizon HTC One (M7)

I just bought this HTC from a buying service, and a trusted one. But when I got the phone. I noticed that the phone was 100% working except the Microphone. I tried using video recording, and I got loud static. I tried a voice call and the person on the other end got static. But not on speakerphone. I found that weird because the mic didn't work on video or a non-speaker voice call.
I wanna know if it's a hardware or software issue and if hardware, how people have repaired it.
Thanks.
P.S. The "Main Mic" Is broken. The 2nd Mic is perfectly Working. From the Main Mic, All I get is static

Happened to me after I dropped my One on concrete floor from 5 feet. Regional (Minnesota) repair shop fixed for $75 +/- but I had to call around because many shops would not attempt the repair due to difficulty and likely damage in opening the One. Not an easy phone to take apart. Believe the microphone and charging port where on same board. Maybe unrelated but soon after my phone started developing the purple camera tint. Possibly due to disturbing the heat shield during repair?

Where I live, all we have are iOS repair shops. And a really far shop for any phone in general. HTC Said the repair could vary from 90 to 200 dollars. But the phone shows no sign of high drops nor water damage. I already tried a small dosage of compressed air. But it didn't have any effect. I'm starting to think this is a software issue.

Is the device you have s off and unlocked? If it is, the problem might be that it needs to have the firmware updated.

I wish it was S-Off and Unlocked.. It would've been if it didn't cost money (I.E. Sunshine)
All I know is that the recovery is corrupted. But I'm not sure if I can Re-Flash stock recovery while its locked..

Have you tried running the encrypted RUU that @dottat posted? That should reformat all the partitions.

Will it Re-Flash the recovery? Because I had CWM and something happened and the boot loader re-locked and now its S-On again. The recovery just shows a phone with an exclaination mark. Says error in yellow text, and reboots as normal.

The ruu flashes the phone like it was new again. I would definitely try that before I sent it to HTC. I would also recommend that if it fixes your phone to never use cwm. It is complete crap nowdays and I don't even understand how it could have done what you said.

The only recovery I actually liked was the AmonRA recovery for the EVO 4G and the Incredible. Do you have a link to the thread with the RUU?

Okay. I'll Give that a try and get back to you once I finish.

Alright. I'll give it a try.

The recovery is still corrupted, sadly. That firmware update thingy didn't help much.

I flashed CWM for the M7.

Yeah but if you flashed the GSM version of cwm that might be what caused the corrupted recovery.

That's probably what did it. But I'll wait until sunshine becomes free. Otherwise, I have no phone as of now and I cannot return it. And I'm also out $125. I will either have to find a non-root method of disabling noise cancellation, repair the phone myself somehow (I'm only 14. So I'd probably end up breaking it.) , find a free way to root it, or something else. Because without any of those. I have definitely wasted my money.
Lesson Learned; Don't buy things off of eBay.

But you certainly helped at least to some extent. Sorry if I caused you any trouble. Thanks for all your help.

AUX not working

Hellow, i`m a user of HOX for about 2 monthes.
I`m a daily user of earphones.
Today when i connected the earphones, the logo of the earphones at the status bar did not appear and the sound came out of the phone and not from the earphones.
I tried using 2 other earphones and obviously the problem is at the AUX port and not the earphones.
Is that hardware problem or it can be software related?
I`m using stock rom(1.29.708.15) and stock kernal.
Also, if that hardware related and i unlocked the bootloader through HTCDEV at the past(i relocked it), can it damage my warrntey at that case?
Ty in advance.

It's a hardware fault.
You have Hong Kong phone, where did you buy it? The warranty shouldn't matter since it's clearly a hardware fault, but some places have less good statutory rights than others.

I was asking about what country, really. If you bought it privately, and you don't have the receipt, not fun. Anyway, HTC might still fix it. Just return as near to stock before returning it.
There is an app that can switch to headphone mode, but I dunno if it requires root. I'll let you find the thread here yourself.

I`m too lazy to search the receipt right now, but i`m sure i have it.
anyway i`ll contact global htc tomorrow and see what they can do, if they will refuse to fix it i`ll contact the seller.
At the worst case, this problem can be fixed at a private phones lab?
edit:
Ok i found this app - toggleheadset2.
when forcing it to headphones mode the AUX works, but again when canceling the force of the app it`s not working.
How can it be a hardware fault if it work`s at forcing mode? that means the port is working.
Try a factory reset, if that doesn't work try installing mist recent ruu make sure it matches your cid, if the port works its probably something else messed up
Your boot loader reads re locked so htc know it has been unlocked before

Did try a factory reset + SD wipe that didn`t work, and i can`t reinstall the ruu because i cannot find it over the net, only the 1.29.708.9 version is available.
after that i wanted to check if that happends with other roms also, so i installed CM 10 (always wanted to use it but i was 2 lazy ) but also at CM 10 theres the same problem so i restored everything again.
so now i back to point 0 with a wiped phone :/
...
Ok, after speaking with htc for using my warranty, they want 15$ just for send the phone to their lab.
After that the lab will make an offer for me, and then i will need to pay another 15$ for the shipment...
so that`s too much for me.
I tried today to "play" with the AUX port by pushing harder the connection, sometimes when i pushed the connection harder or moved it the earphones logo appeared for few seconds, so now i`m totally sure the problem is with the AUX port.
My question is - can i buy a replacement part and fix it myself? if so, what do i need to buy?

The headphone jack is usually soldered on to the motherboard or a daughter board. In most cases you'll need to do some soldering, which is not advisable if you don't have any experience with that sort of thing. If you don't want to waste your money/time with HTC then the next best option is to take it to a local mobile phone repair shop.
Or you can buy a Bluetooth A2DP clip/ headphones/earphones and use it over BT.
Challenge htc if your headphone jack I loose and it's happened through normal use then ring them back and speak to a team leader or manager, htc dev voids parts of the warranty but the headphone jack isn't anything to do with it, I'm in the UK so our laws are different but fight them

How to completely brick my M8?

Ok, this might sound weird, but I have to brick my Rooted, S offed, GPE Converted M8. There'e no RUU yet for returning to stock, so how do I completely brick the phone?

Just do a warranty swap, trust me when I say T-Mobile does not care for any of that (as long as you dont have an absurd splash screen or boot aniamtion)
Yeah Im trying to replace the phone with T-Mobile. I have to ship it to them, and I don't want them to find out I rooted the phone and voided the warranty.
Try a 24 volt AC power adapter... Like from an old sprinkler timer. Strip an inch or so off the leads, jam one lead in the headphone jack and the other in the SD slot. Or go between the power port and the SD slot. Or some combination thereof. It oughta brick the hell out of it! I've roasted a few pieces of electronics that way.
Being this is a metal chassis phone, I might wear gloves when you do it. Or hook it up to an outlet with a light switch so you can remote control the fireworks.
Orrr. Flash a ROM for a different phone. I bricked my S4 when I flashed a ROM for the Note 2. Wouldn't even turn on. It was hilarious man

It does! Just modify the updater script a bit. I accidentally flashed it and took it to a service center, they had no clue what went wrong. They ended up giving me a new phone. Or, just corrupt an M8 ROM

How do I corrupt a ROM?
Easiest way to brick the phone would be to download a kernel from a completely different device, remove the assert check from the updater script, and flash it. Should brick the phone in no time.

Don't know if it's possible since most recoveries verify the MD5. But editing the important files of the ROM may work. Or, is chrome said, download a kernel for a different phone. Or, a modem. But those will destroy your phone and there'd be no going back.

I don't have to brick it now. I'll brick it when my replacement M8 gets here in a few days. I'll let you guys know what works/doesn't work. Please, feel free to offer any other suggestions.

I'm getting a replacement through warranty with T-Mobile. I called them and told them that the phone wouldn't turn on or display any LEDs, or anything, and that I already tried charging it. And they said that they would send me a replacement for $20. The $20 is to cover shipping to my house and from my house to them, so I don't mind it. But that's only if your phone isn't cracked or water damaged, exc. I do that if/when I hard brick my phones. This time it's because I ****ed up with flashing something, and now my phone doesn't get signal from T-Mobile, and since my phone is rooted, S-Offed, and on GPE RUU, I can't go back to complete stock until an RUU is available for the T-Mobile variant.

So, $20 is all you're paying? Do you know if you're getting a new, or refurbished phone? And please do keep us updated on what happens

[Q] Please can any developer Help me? I'll pay good for that problem.

I've bought HTC One M8 a week ago and excited to root that. So I did unlock bootloader and that phone is out of warranty now.
I noticed microphone is not working while talking and sound recording. But if I use speakerphone they hear me.
Microphone at the back working great. Is that possible with any program or firmware to use microphone at the back while in normal mode ?
If any1 make a program or apk like that, I'll pay good.
Please help me.
Regards..

Please correct me if I am wrong but I think worst to worst you can always relock the bootloader, flash stock image, basically "un-root" to gain the warranty back?

All HTC would have to do is look in bootloader to see it was RELOCKED instead of LOCKED.
It can be made LOCKED with s-off, and than made s-on again (although not sure about the s-on part, I haven't actually seen a process to do so). But HTC will always have a record of the bootloader being unlocked via HTCDev.com.
Although some have argued that HTCDev.com only tracks that a unlock bin code has been issued, and they have no way of knowing if you actually used that code or not.

So is there no way to talk with second microphone at the back?
If the mic works sometimes, there are 2 possibilities:
A firmware issue
Mic is loose.
1-Try upgrading/downgrading the firmware and see if that helps
2- If you are not concerned about warranty, open the phone and check the mic.
If warranty is still accountable, go back to stock and apply for it. The worst it can happen is that they say to you, we cant because it was unlocked. Then you go back to step 1.

Technically, almost anything is possible. But whether such a thing exists, or can feasibly be made (or any dev interest in doing so) is another story.
Maybe see if a rule exists of can be created for the AutomateIt app? Situation like this seems right up the alley for that app.
Just went through the exact same scenario and was about to ship my phone on for repair.
Before you do that, take a toothbrush and slowly scrub the bottom speaker grille. Focus mostly on the left 2/3's of the grille. You will quickly see a bunch of crud coming out.
After cleaning it, give the mic a try and see if it's back to normal.

Updated to Lollipop. Mic-1 not working.

Hi
I'm running an international unlocked M8. just got it from the service repair center for a battery-related repair. Immediately upgraded it to OTA Lollipop. The microphone isn't working. Google Now & Phone calls just pick up static. Speaker phone works fine. Tried cleaning the grill to no avail. Tried factory reset. Nothing.
Do you think this is related to Lollipop? Can I count on an update to follow to solve this? Because I would really hate to send it back to the service center.
Thanks :fingers-crossed:
I would recommend you to try install the previous version you got and if the problem still exists then sorry mate but you have to send it back.
I know it sucks! :/
I guess there's no way to avoid it. Phone's going back not even one day after I got it back I was hoping it was a widespread software issue that would get a speedy patch but seems like it's not. Thanks for the reply.

And yes they did send me the same phone I sent to be repaired. It even has the decal I put on the back. And you can see a small indentation from where they opened it up, and the screen is veeeeeery slightly wobbly when I touch it in a corner.
They told me they don't do replacements unless it is wholly beyond repair. Usually the carrier does that but I got this off contract. Though I have heard informally after the third repair they will just send a new one.
I really admire you for your strength . And I would love for this to be a tale of righteous customer overcoming the evil customer support. In my experience the person behind the desk just doesn't care and will only take it out on you if you disrespect him. Whereas being cordial seems to garner astonishment "wow he actually treats me like I am human". I've tried being angry and I've tried being kind.
Thank you very much for your reply.

Persistent sound issue no matter what

I've done just about everything. There's a log cat below. EVERY ROM, EVERY KERNEL STOCK OR CUSTOM, this issue is there after the first reboot. Im only going to answer every question that goes like "have you tried...." With a full rundown of what I did and results. I will remind I've tried every custom nougat rom, stock or custom and I've tried stock marshmallow rom to. Also some roms haven't even had sound on first boot. Some roms will work for a bit then they will do a soft reboot that takes 30-45 minutes to complete. Then have no sound. I'm open to taking my phone apart since my screen is fu*ked up. Im begging at this point I love this phone, I've had it for 2 months, I don't want to have to buy another one.
Tried unbrick tool yet? That may have a slightly different effect than just flashing stock ROM (as it completely nukes the device and installs everything again).
Anyways, you may have a hardware issue. In that case taking the phone apart won't do much ... You can only check the connections, that's about it.
