I've just upgraded and currently have an M9.
It's 1.32.161.7 firmware with CID VODAP_001 (iirc, not at computer right now).
I want to get root access and upgrade firmware but I've flashed TWRP beta, made a backup of stock and downloaded ota. I've not taken any further steps. I obviously can't flash ota without stock recovery, which I don't have. What are my options now in order to upgrade firmware without S-Off. If I do eventually get S-Off through Sunshine, what would be the steps I need to take in order to upgrade firmware?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.
S-OFF gives you full range of possibilities and does not interfere or hinder your OTAs, upgrades, etc - in any way.. S-OFF does not impose any limitations or additional rules..

Hi I would like to know if there would be a problem if I flash the official rue of an Asian desire z with a european version or vice versa?
I bought my phone second hand and I decided to flash the 1.34.707.1 version into my originally 1.72 desire z. Now my phone cannot find updates. It keeps telling me that there is no update even if check manually.
I know that I can flash a higher version by downloading a higher rue version but what I wanted to find out if I can no longer receive ota updates because of what I did.
Since when I was in 1.72 my phone did not notify me of the 1.82 update too...
I don't know what's wrong.. Please help. Thank you.
I think if you are SuperCID and S-Off, it would work. Otherwise, it won't let you flash the ROM from another region.
Also, if you flash an official ROM, you will lose root, and you can't get it back on any ROM version higher than 1.34. For this reason, if you downgraded to 1.34 for purposes of rooting, you don't want the OTA updates, anyway.
If you're rooted and S-Off, and you want a more updated ROM version, just flash the Virtuous custom ROM. Its mostly stock 1.85, but rooted, and with a few cool added features and some optimizations.
Hi, the thing is I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to rooting. I read the posts here specifically in the wii section and I don't think I have the skills to pull it off and risk bricking my phone.
I think my phone is not rooted or it was before but not anymore, since as mentioned I flashed an official ruu.
So basically, I should still be able to receive OTA's from HTC right? I was wondering why my phone keeps telling me there's no update when the software number is 1.34 stock and not rooted. Shouldn't it notify me that there's an update at least regardless of whether I want to or not?
If you are not rooted, why did you downgrade to 1.34?
I also don't understand why you want to flash the RUU from a different region. If you aren't SuperCID and S-Off it won't work. Why not just flash the latest official RUU for your phone versions/region if you want to be updated and don't care about root?
I'm not sure why your OTA's don't work. I'm still on 1.34 (well, back to it), and I still get notifications to update.

I bought the phone from a friend of mine. I noticed that it had eng hboot and had s-off.
I have zero knowledge about rooting. When the gingerbread test rom for the desire z came out, I flashed the pc10img.zip via the bootloader, however since it was very buggy and laggy, I decided to flash stock desire z rom.
Having no knowledge about rooting I read some of the threads in this forum and learned that flashing an official rom i.e. the RUU would be the easiest way to return back to stock.
It worked, I am using stock rom. I experimented and found out that I can flash any of the RUU, so I chose any of the WWE release. I decided to flash an older firmware version specifically, the 1.34.707.1.
Now the problem is my phone doesn't prompt me with an update, even after checking in about phone > check for update.
I still have s-off but eng hboot is gone. To clarify I was not the one who rooted the phone, so I have no idea what to do.
Is it possible that the previous owner tweaked something in the phone that would absolutely prevent it from receiving OTA?
I am just worried since I have a feeling that the gingerbread OTA will be released in a few weeks since the update for the Desire HD is already out.
Please help and thank you again. I extremely as a NOOB!

I wouldn't worry about getting the official Gingerbread ROM OTA. It will probably be posted here or at shipped-roms.com long before you would get it OTA.
Hello all, after reading todays news about HTC giving up efforts to update the desire, I have decided to update on my own.
The trouble is, my desire is a POS. I am not able to do the unrevoked way because my desire will just go into a reboot loop.
Is there an alternate way of doing it?
I assume that I must be rooted to get this firmware on?
Do I really need this s-off thing? I do not plan to stay rooted. Once i load the new firmware i will unroot.
Thank.
Ok, firstly POS? Secondly, what firmware?
When your rooted you can't simply just unroot. To unroot you have to flash an RUU, which in turn wipes all the data off your phone and updates everything back to manufacturer stock. I don't see what your trying to achieve here.
I am only rooting to get the new ruu. So, I assume that it will then be unrooted no?
POS is piece of sh..
I have the stock 2.2 fm.
You don't need to root to use an RUU. You can happily flash an RUU all day. The current RUU is Android 2.2, software number 2.49.405.5.
Hi!
so i'm on ViperOne 2.5.0 with 2.22.531.6 firmware, unlocked bootloader, rooted, untouched CID and S-On. I'm wanting to update my firmware, gain S-Off, update to newest ViperOne. My plan is to relock the bootloader and run the 2.22.531.6 based T-mobile RUU, re-root and re-unlock plus change recovery to TWRP, run Sunshine to gain S-Off, then install latest ViperOne. Does that plan make sense? Normally I would just go ahead and experiment, but I'm finding the HTC phone to be much more complex than the previous nexii that I've tinkered with. I've been reading on this subject for the last week and I think my plan is sound, but wanted to consult with some more experienced people if they think it'll work. Thank you!

At the beginning of the post you say that you are already on 2.22.531.6, whY do u wanna upgrade if u are already on it?
oh, i wanted to update to firmware 3.xx. Excuse me, I assumed that was implied with updating to the latest Viperone, which requires the 3.xx firmware. So what I ended up doing, for anyone that was/is in the situation I was in, was restoring a TWRP backup of stock Tmobile 2.22.531.6, rooting that with SuperSu.zip before rebooting, then booting into android. I then ran sunshine and obtained S-Off (for me the money was worth it). From there i flashed a stock recovery and allowed the phone to update to the 3.xx firmware via an OTA. Then I re-installed TWRP via an M8 toolkit (only part that required connecting to my PC), and then flashed the latest ViperOne. I obtained all files for this process from XDA. Once again all is well with the universe (for me at least). If anyone wants more details on what I did, let me know.
I have a completely stock Verizon HTC 10, that I bought a couple weeks ago. I am interested in using Sunshine to go s-off locked. I'd like to do this before I run the Nougat update. My question is if I only run Sunshine, will I still have the stock recovery after it is done? If so, will I be able to take the OTA to Nougat at that point? Then in theory I'd be s-off, locked, on Nougat and un-rooted. Then I could wait until root is acquired but I wouldn't run the risk of upgrading firmware and such and losing the ability for Sunshine to get s-off.
Does this question make sense?
Thanks everyone!

Yes youll have stock recovery and you can upgrade and still keep your s-off.also when nougat comes out in the verizon thread someone will post a flashable zip or ruu of nougat so either way you will be safe.now idk how nougat will act but now the only way to get cm to boot on vzw is too flash a midified us unlocked firmware then ruu back to verizon firmware.hope this helps and answers your questions

Hi!
I'm also thinking about doing the S-off before the nougat update. In your post, you said that " ...I wouldn't run the risk of upgrading firmware and such and losing the ability for Sunshine to get s-off. ". What risks does upgrading firmware have? Do you lose S-off if you upgrade the firmware? Isn't the Nougat OTA a firmware update itself?
Sorry for the stupid question, I'm kinda new to the topic

I think he meant first s-off while you're still on MM,then update to Nougat.

I meant if you upgrade to N and upgrade firmware before you get s-off, you may lose the exploit sunshine uses to gain s-off.
Once you have s-off, nothing will change you back to s-on except a deliberate act you do to set it back to S-on. Upgrading firmware after you have s-off will never set you back to s-on.

The OP being a a Verizon user, there is no N Verizon firmware he can take while being S-ON until Verizon gives us N (or it somehow gets leaked?). So not much to worry about yet.
If you want S-OFF, however, I would do it very soon, as N will most certainly patch the temp-root method used in Sunshine to acquire S-OFF.
To the OP - after you run Sunshine you will be booted back to where you were pre-Sunshine, only difference is you'll be now S-OFF and bootloader unlocked (even if you choose locked).
For other users like an Unlocked variant device if S-ON and a locked bootloader, if you run the N RUU, or take the OTA, which updates firmware will kill your opportunity for S-OFF until/if/when/ Sunshine is updated for N, so be careful about what you flash/upgrade.
Best of luck, all.
So, being a fool, I decided to jump right into flashing and rooting without bothering to take a backup of anything - I'll never want to go back to stock, so why would I back it up, right? Wrong, because it turns out I've made it much much harder to update my firmware, which is required to use the latest ROMs. I'm currently on 3.35.61.14. The only RUU I've been able to find is for 4.19.61.1. HTCDev also has 1.32.61.15, but I'd have to build it from source, and by the looks of it, downgrading is tricky and I have no idea how easy building from source would be. Upgrading from v3 to v4 is also not easy outside of OTA updates which of course don't work if you've flashed TWRP and rooted.
So, I'm wondering what my options are now. As far as I can see, they are:
1) Stick with v3 firmware and use older versions of ROMs that are compatible with it.
2) Pay $25 for Sunshine to S-OFF so I can flash a different RUU.
3) Get hold of a v2 or v3 stock RUU for SKU 61 somehow.
Does anybody have any other suggestions? Thanks.
Further information:
I have a bootable phone and have downloaded the OTA update, which I have also pulled off the phone and extracted, however the update fails, I assume because my system partition was modified when I rooted it.
I doubt you'll find an RUU for it so make sure it's definitely an M9, s-off, change cid to htc__001, mid to 0PJA10000, flash 3.35.401.12. Take the 2 ota updates to 7.0.
S-off is worth $25 just to debrand your phone.
