Official Nexus 5 Wireless Charger, First Impressions.

I had the tilted wireless charger already (link bellow) but decided to get the official wireless charger as well.

Of course its a lot better made then the Chinese charger but is it better in usability and charging speed?
With the Chinese charger I was using the stock nexus charger and cable because they are much better then the cables that came with the charger, more detail in the link bellow

The info you need to know is that the OEM nexus charger and cable put out about 1000-1100mA while the same cable paired with a samsung 2a block was able to push past 1600mA but not keep it there, leveling out at 1200mA. The OEM block and cable with Chinese charger puts out between 650mA and 730mA
So how does the official Nexus charger compare?
Well to start I tested the new cable with the OEM block and it was putting out just over 1100mA, so we know the cable is better then the OEM cable. Then I tested the new cable with the block that comes with it and got a steady 1600mA and it didnt drop. Now the block itself doesn't say anything on it as to what it puts out, but the charger base says 1.8a, is that what the block puts out? Regardless the block is much better then the Samsung 2a block.
I don't use a case so the phone on the charger itself puts out only a little bit more then Chinese charger keeping a steady 768mA. Now it can drop below and above that number but it really likes 768mA. So while it does have a great cable and block, if all you care about is speed then charger itself is a little faster but not by much compared to the Chinese charger.
As far as usability, I cant get the nexus charger to miss. I can throw it on and it connects every time. With the Chinese one it didn't always connect and i had to make sure i got it in the right spot and make sure, even if I heard the noise, that it didn't disconnect and was actually charging. With the nexus charger I feel confident that the magnets are lining it up and it gets a good connection every time.
As and added bonus, I have heard a lot about how you could possibly charge while vertical attached to a wall. I decided to try this and I can attest that the weak link will be the charger holding the wall not the charger holding the phone, as long as you don't use a case like me. The magnets are more then strong enough to hold the phone vertically, in fact they are more then strong enough to hold it upside down, I tried! The pad that sticks to the surface is just as strong as I've been hearing as well. I literately just slapped it on the wall and then threw the phone up and its holding thus far. I have it only a few inches above my night stand and will update if it falls, but so far it has held up to me taking the phone off and on about 50 times with no issue. I'm not sure how it would hold up as a car mount, only because I don't know how the sticky part of the base would hold up to extreme hot and cold. I image it would probably fall, especially if completely vertical.
I would definitely recommend the Nexus charger over a Chinese one. I you have the $50 then its a no brainier, it was even a couple bucks cheaper then that on amazon and my prime membership got it here on Monday when i ordered on Saturday afternoon. If you only have $13 bucks and don't mind waiting 3 or more weeks then Chinese one charges almost as fast.

I too finally went from the orb to the new charger because I wanted a vertical mount. I'm blind as a bat with my contacts out and wanted to be able to see the time on my phone while in bed. With the orb, the angle was bad and my nightstand is taller than my mattress, making it hard to see. So I got the new charger, put it on the side of my nightstand and it's holding just fine. Holds the phone great too and now I can see the time on my phone. As long as you can get a smooth, flat surface, I don't see why mounting vertically would be an issue.

just wanted to say, it did end up falling off the wall the 2nd night while charging, the charger from the wall, not the phone from the charger. A good sized piece of 3m double sided tape right in the middle of the charger fixed that and I've had no problems since.

Charger in use
Can you advise please if the Google charger cuts out once the phone has reached 100% or does it change to a trickle charge? Looking at some of the alternatives (e.g. on Amazon) I haven't found any that automatically cut out at 100% although a few mention about changing to a trickle charge. What's your experience in this regard?

Have you considered using this charger in the car? From what you're saying, the hold issue seems to be the charger itself. Using double sided 3m thick tape may solve the issue.
The reason I'm curious is because I and many other previous Palm Pre users used to use the touchstone wireless charger in their cars and the phone never fell of even on extreme bumps. It was great being able to simply place the Pre on the charger and if you were lucky you could put the touchstone right in your line of sight (I have an 06 civic so the touchstone fit right next to the steering wheel, to the right. Look at my profile pic or do a search for palm Pre wireless charging in the car and you'll come up with hundreds of results and pics).
Do you think the charger's internal magnets would be strong enough to hold the nexus 5 in place while driving? Right now, I still use the touchstone as a place holder for my 5 as the internal metal discs on the 5 line up nicely with the internal magnets in the touchstone. I did modify the touchstone slightly and added magnets every 90° starting at the 45° position and then the other 3 were 90°apart from the initial magnet. I'll try to post a pic or a video of what I mean. The touchstone is not a qi charger so it doesn't charge but it certainly makes for a super convenient spot for the phone to be especially when using navigation. Also the nexus has not fallen once while driving over some pretty harsh bumps.
What do you think?

New AC adapter & USB cable

My USB cable charger cord that came with my P-600 is starting to loosen up. You know, when you have to adjust out so it's in the slot just right in order for it to charge. I know that you can't use just any AC adapter combined with just any USB cord to get the power needed to charge a tablet fast and efficiently. Are there any recommendations out there for a new AC adapter and/or USB cord that has been proven to work well with this tablet? (Besides buying a replacement from Samsung.)

Cant recommend anything specific but remember the note 10.1 2014 uses a 5.3 v charger (and not a 5v charger like most smartphones)

Right. I think most smartphone chargers won't even be able to charge a tablet at all because a tablet, any tablet, needs more power (volts) to charge it effectively. I've tried using my Galaxy S3 charger to charge my Note 10.1 just to see if it would work and it shows the charging icon with a line through it (doesn't charge at all).

Any charger will work, but the higher-wattage ones will charge faster. Samsung ones are available all over the place AMZN/FLEABAY/A4C/etc. for cheap (<$10).

My original charger and a supposed duplicate purchased later seem to be charging slower as time goes by. Just as with my last purchase have read a good bit. But I too need advice on the best safe but fast charger and cable. I'm seriously considering the above recommendation for the Anker 40w (8A) 5 port charger. At most I charge only two devices at one time and usually only one. But if this is solid and reliable, the extra ports are ok. Before ordering, several questions:
- I notice the write up states two ports have the IQ charging - is this the case and are they labeled?
- I'd be charging my LG G3 with this too - any issues doing this?
- Lastly, seems cable length/gauge can affect charging speed, right? Which cables are folks having best experience with? I'm considering: http://www.amazon.com/Anker-Premium...ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A294P4X9EWVXLJ. I prefer long cables if possible...
Bottom line, want a solid charger and cables for my Note 10.1 2014 Edition (and LG G3 if possible) that I won't have to replace in 6-12 months. If there's a two-port of same top quality, let me know too!

Went ahead and ordered the Anker charger and instead, am trying the http://www.amazon.com/Hi-mobiler-Go...8252875&sr=8-2&keywords=28/24+micro+usb+cable. See it's 28/24AWG hopefully will do the trick...only worried about the gold plating (ones tried before from Amazon seemed to get "lose" their prongs and slip out of my tablet's charging slot). Not sure if it's the gold being softer or ?
In any case, do let me know if anyone thinks the charger would create any issues if used on my LG G3!

All 5 ports are IQ.Charges a Note 10.1 2014, S4, Note 3, Z blue tooth headset and a LG tablet all at the same time and all quickly and fully. Great charger.

I found an issue with the Anker and one of the half a dozen devices of all kind I charged with it.
The touchscreen of my Huawei Tablet acts weird when connected to the Anker. This is a not uncommon thing, but first time i encountered it. And found the reason.
The Anker emits some weak 80v AC current on the GND line. Tested with another brand name charger(One for All, the universal remote maker). That one carried 20 Volts. My previous fav charger also emits AC, like with the Anker, the Texture of the tablet's aluminium case felt rougher during charging, when softly brushing over it with a finger tip. Only there were no touch troubles. Which can be avoided by touching the metal frame with your thumb during tapping the screen.

Is there any concern with this potentially causing damage, or just an inconvenience if plugged in while using the device (if one's unit was emitting that current)?
In my case, I haven't noticed this with either my Note 10.1 or LG G3. My guess is if it hasn't happened after a month or two, I don't need to be overly
concerned - the unit is functioning properly?
Personally, overall been happy with the Anker and haven't noticed any issues...

I had no damage so far, and the Note is happy with the Anker. And it seems that many or most chargers seem affected, like at least three of mine. Probably Samsung's too. Connect a multimeter to Usb 5v ground(the metal shield of the plugs seems to be griunded, though I tested with the plug for my Huawei tablet. Connect the meter's ground probe to something appropiate, like central heating, water pipe or the third line of the mains, which should be "protective ground" or something.
The current only produces a slightly bitter taste on the tongue, near nothing, but it's amazing how the feel of a metal surface changes.

Wireless Charger ?

I just received my Sony Smartwatch 3 and something looks weird to me. The charger plug is located in a not convenient location. So I'm wondering if an inductive charging is possible and what charger model would be compatible.

no chance. Just have to fiddle with that bad boy. a cradle would help. I'd think a third party could develop a qi charging plate/case that you could leave plugged in. Something like this but sized correctly.

I really wonder why they didn't put magnetic charging contacts on one of the edges of the watch unit. Would have been so convenient since I already have Sony docks and USB cables with magnetic ends.

See I completely disagree. I like the fact that Sony have just made the charging by micro USB. So I only have to carry one charger that does my watch, phone and tablet. The positioning of the port is inconvenient, but I believe it is where it is so it is unseen and doesn't rub against your wrist. What they really need to package with the watch is a cable that is a decent length that has a right angle plug at the watch end to make it easier to insert.

Well they probably could have done both, I would have liked Qi as an option in addition to the uUSB. But oh well. I counted it as a trade off for the nascent nfc and wifi.

I have one and it is much easier.

Getting a znaps magnetic adapter for micro USB to try on my sw3. If it works, it will make charging much easier. I only worry that it will make the watch no longer waterproof.

Yesterday, I took my new Smartwatch 3 and inserted a Cisno Ultra Micro USB Magnetic Adapter Charger Cable. It works! What's more, even with the charging port's rubber flap bent backward, my wrist can't feel any difference; I'm using the metal (stainless steel) band and don't own the rubber band to test it with.
Here's a stock photo of the Cisno adapter attached to a phone:
I assume that any magnetic adapter that looks like this will work; in fact, the Cisno turned out to be a Wsken. That irked me: I specifically bought the Cisno because the seller claimed it's strictly for charging, not for data, and I didn't want to risk that my Sony watch or my Sony Z Ultra GPE phone would interpret the charger to be in data mode. In any case, the watch's battery charged rapidly, going from 1% to 100% in about 25 minutes.
For anyone who is considering the Sony Smartwatch 3 but finds micro-USB charging too much trouble, a magnetic charger is a game changer. Just remember that it requires a proprietary 3ft cable; you'll probably want to buy extra kits so you'll have additional cables for the office, the car, and your travel kit. I haven't found kits that offer a longer cable.

Really very very easy to use and plug the sw3 for charge. It does not even bother wrist. Also very usefull for a phone in car, easiest to connect the usb cable in the dark.

Just got mine - putting the adapter into the MicroUSB port was kind of scary as you have to press really hard (and might break something). I am really happy in the end though - makes charging so much easier.

I got mine from Tinydeals for under $4. I can confirm, the adapter doesn't bother me. All I need now is to find a replacement metal band.

clever! would it affect the water resistance though, having the rubber flap open like that? I went for the right-angled micro usb cord and it has been great so far.

[Q] Sony xperia z1 magnetic charger

I was just wondering if you can charge your xperia z1 by a magnetic charger and your original sony charger at the same time and if i do this will that make the charging procces faster or the same or would it even charge??

It depends on how the phone handles the current sources. If I had any advice to give you: don't do it. Best case scenario: it charges. Worst case: Burn baby burn. Aha this might be a little extreme, but I seriously don't think this is a good idea

When being charged via a magnetic source, the USB plug "takes over" when plugged in, and thus, the magnetic plug turns off (the phone stops accepting current from it).
I used my altimeter here and tested this, with an exposed source in both cables.

I have the AppRadio in my car and use an MHL adapter to get the video out. (AppRadio 2 does not support Mira-link)
With the MHL adapter I often have charging issues, with the phone either still losing charge or just not gaining.
I am using a 12V to Twin USB and have one plug powering the MHL, and the other powering the magnetic charger.
With that setup I get a good charging and MHL data out. I don't know if I am getting a faster charge then just the Magnetic, but I am certainly getting faster then just USB.
On a side note I love that Sony added the magnetic charger option, but Hate how the implemented it.
My brother-in-law is right to give me a hard time about how weak the connection is compared to his apple macbook's magnetic charger.
anyway good luck with it. It won't (IMHO) cause any issues so test it and see.

Budget magnetic charging cable

I want to buy a magnetic charger and I live in India and very low quality cables are available on the local websites. I have looked for cables on eBay.com which ship to my location but I don't know which one to buy. I need your opinions. My maximum budget is 12$(incl. shipping).
The WSKEN Cable is available at my location. Is the cable worth buying?

I got wsken magnetic cable, and its build quality is fine, but magnet is not that strong - its even weaker than another fake original sony cable i got. But if you just use it to charge your phone without using it, it can do the job.

I wouldnt recommend one with a very strong magnet. There have been some horror stories of the storng magnet PULLING the phones charge port completely out. I got a fairly weak one from amazon.

Fits perfectly with my Cruzerlite TPU case. I even have EXTRA room for clearance. Magnet isnt the strongest which makes me happy as I only charge at night when I'm sleeping as the phone lasts through the day for me.

Yup, it happened to me. I use a Magnector adaptor and it is very strong, after a while the whole connector came off as there was simply a VERY thin acrylic glue foam tape (VHB ?) holding it and keeping water off. By thin I do not mean the thickness but the actual long side surface
The good news is that the connection with the internal PCB board are spring loaded, so I put it back in place and tested it then used a needle to put some cyanoacrlylate glue to hold it, it never came out again and the phone still look ok. Now I always try to removing it with a twisting motion just in case...
It is hard for me to understand how they can claim waterproof and use such thin gasket but I still like this phone a lot!

hmm dont think I'll be getting a magnetic charger any time soon then if it comes off that easily. >_<

It's just the Magnector adapter that seems to do that. None of the others are strong enough to pull the connector off of the phone.

I also have a generic magnetic charger. The one with a circle blue LED in the part near the magnet. I found that it charges slowly compared to the OEM usb cable that came in the box. I used the same OEM charger for both tests.
Charging via magnetic cable is roughly 60-70% of the speed of normal USB charging. Is this just me that I have a low quality cable or is it really that much slower?

I tried two Magnetic cables but they don't work on my Z3 Compact because pins are not aligned with phone and charging not working probably because there is no contact. Actually i got one with LED indicator to work several times but on slightly move it stops charging and it is hard to get it to charge again so I gave up on these cables.
I bought original Sony DK48 Dock and it's working out of the box. Only issue is that I need to remove protective case before charging because with it phone won't fit in Dock. It almost fits so I'll probably try to modify larger adapter so phone can fit with case...

I received my DK48 dock and magnetic cable from Ali Express and they both work great. The charging cable ($2.71) matches the pins perfectly so doesn't appear to be a knock-off. I have a Devilcase bumper and works with the DK48 dock also with the case on--just attach the included back rest. It takes me a few times to get it aligned perfectly to charge but works.

I'm using this cheap one and it works great for me. Magnet is ok so you can even move your phone as long as the cable is parallel to your phone.

I'm have WSKEN X-cable Easy Version, and it's great.
You can also try WSKEN X-CABLE DOUBLE METAL which has a charge indicator led.
Both cables charge my device faster than original Xperia Z2 charger and magnet is not too weak/too powerful.

I've tried several magnetic chargers and adapters and always facing the same problem, too weak magnet and if the phone is moved even an inch the cable falls off. Finally I got WSKEN X-CABLE for 7$ and that did the trick, everything works great including fast charging. You can literally hold your phone up in the air by the charger.
