Hi,
I just received my Sony Smartwatch 3 and something looks weird to me. The charger plug is located in a not convenient location. So I'm wondering if an inductive charging is possible and what charger model would be compatible.
Thx.
no chance. Just have to fiddle with that bad boy. a cradle would help. I'd think a third party could develop a qi charging plate/case that you could leave plugged in. Something like this but sized correctly.
I really wonder why they didn't put magnetic charging contacts on one of the edges of the watch unit. Would have been so convenient since I already have Sony docks and USB cables with magnetic ends.
See I completely disagree. I like the fact that Sony have just made the charging by micro USB. So I only have to carry one charger that does my watch, phone and tablet. The positioning of the port is inconvenient, but I believe it is where it is so it is unseen and doesn't rub against your wrist. What they really need to package with the watch is a cable that is a decent length that has a right angle plug at the watch end to make it easier to insert.
This made my life a little easier:

Well they probably could have done both, I would have liked Qi as an option in addition to the uUSB. But oh well. I counted it as a trade off for the nascent nfc and wifi.

I have one and it is much easier.
Getting a znaps magnetic adapter for micro USB to try on my sw3. If it works, it will make charging much easier. I only worry that it will make the watch no longer waterproof.

Yesterday, I took my new Smartwatch 3 and inserted a Cisno Ultra Micro USB Magnetic Adapter Charger Cable. It works! What's more, even with the charging port's rubber flap bent backward, my wrist can't feel any difference; I'm using the metal (stainless steel) band and don't own the rubber band to test it with.
Here's a stock photo of the Cisno adapter attached to a phone:
I assume that any magnetic adapter that looks like this will work; in fact, the Cisno turned out to be a Wsken. That irked me: I specifically bought the Cisno because the seller claimed it's strictly for charging, not for data, and I didn't want to risk that my Sony watch or my Sony Z Ultra GPE phone would interpret the charger to be in data mode. In any case, the watch's battery charged rapidly, going from 1% to 100% in about 25 minutes.
For anyone who is considering the Sony Smartwatch 3 but finds micro-USB charging too much trouble, a magnetic charger is a game changer. Just remember that it requires a proprietary 3ft cable; you'll probably want to buy extra kits so you'll have additional cables for the office, the car, and your travel kit. I haven't found kits that offer a longer cable.

Very nice idea thank you I bought one !
Received mine
Really very very easy to use and plug the sw3 for charge. It does not even bother wrist. Also very usefull for a phone in car, easiest to connect the usb cable in the dark.
Great idea. Thanks. Search were I van buy it in the Netherlands.
Will it work, with Apple chargers for the macbook air?

I bought it in ebay.
This model is a mini usb port. I see also some model for iphone and ipad
Looks like a winner.
Just got mine - putting the adapter into the MicroUSB port was kind of scary as you have to press really hard (and might break something). I am really happy in the end though - makes charging so much easier.
I got mine from Tinydeals for under $4. I can confirm, the adapter doesn't bother me. All I need now is to find a replacement metal band.
clever! would it affect the water resistance though, having the rubber flap open like that? I went for the right-angled micro usb cord and it has been great so far.
certainly broke water resistance

i think this is better than magnet actual cable(like in 2nd like below) because then i can use my cable for other purpose and dont have to carry 2 sort of cables.
the whole point of mircoUsb is that its universal so i like to keep it that way.

I bought a cheap magnetic charging cable on ebay and it doesn't stay attached well. It would be okay for in the car or on a desk perhaps, but you can't hold the phone with the cable in or pick it up, it'll just fall out.
Does anyone know if the cable pulled from the official dock is any better?

I pulled the cable from the Sony DK30 (Z Ultra dock) and it's pretty much as you described it. The cable pretty much detaches itself when I put the phone on the carpet for charging. Even if it doesn't detach, moving the phone is enough to shift the cable to the point where it stops charging.
Looks like these have made their way to Amazon now. A little more expensive but delivery is likely to be quicker http://amzn.to/1gfEhyI

I agree with you, If the magnet is too strong it will drag the phone of someone trips over the cable, pulls it... and so on.

I wouldn't want it very strong but it has almost no strength at all. if you even lightly touch the cable it dislodges it.
I'd like to hear from someone who has the official one and the 3rd party one how the magnet strengths compare
I wouldn't waste your time on the one from Amazon, my first one I had didn't work and I've just received a replacement and the magnet is so weak if you move the cable it falls off!
I'm going to wait for more to come out.

see thats the problem sony isnt making cables like these, it designed the magnet charging port for the dock not for cable when cable is a better idea. its just depends on quality of magnet used isnt the cable now.
so lets wait for other 3rd party to make better cables.
the Chinese ones are no good as for now.
atleast they brought up a great idea.
Ordered one of these on ebay and the magnet is pretty strong but it's just very sensitive to tilting (I mean, it easily goes off when putting force in an angle). That's not weird though, look at the width of the magnet. Don't think much can be done about it... I can lift the phone by the magnetic cable if I just keep it straight.
Charging seems to go pretty slow though, perhaps it's more ment to deliver power while being in a dock (and just keeping things up to par) as opposed to actually properly charging it?
Would have to check how fast/slow it actually is but seemed to differ quite a bit with the regular usb charger. Any other opinions on this?
Hi,
i get DK31 and take the cable of. No difference with what i charge the phone /magnetic cable or original charger /

That is very different to my Amazon one. There is no chance of moving the phone at all with the magnet on the cable. It holds the connector to the phone but any movement in the phone or cable and they come apart.
Do you have a link for the one you ordered ?
I think the speed of charging is entirely down to the source used. My new Macbook pro charges full speed but my wife's Dell laptop is painfully slow

I have two of those. They are NOT genuine, but a rather good attempt at KIRFing it.
They do work, but the magnet is a little on the weak side. The connector part seems somewhat deeper than the genuine item, so in all likelihood, this will work cases (provided they aren't too thick).

So where is the OMG Sony Magnetic cable?
I've had the cable for a week or so now and am pretty happy with it. Fairly sure it is just a good Chinese knock off but everything works as expected. Makes charging a breeze by not having to open the flap every time, only issue is it is a bit hard to line up in the dark.

quick question on the subject, while the dock always keep your phone inserted at the same place soyou don't mix the positive and negative contacts, the magnetic cable doesn't seem to have any alignment indicator, does it matter which oriantation you connect it? or both sides work? i'm worried the wrong side could fry the phone...

I would advice to use instead original docking station from Sony, again most of comments in both sources were positives, That is why I don#t trust in chinese cables, phone is too expensive to take a risk ...

Hi everyone
I recently came across a post where a Z1C owner mentioned that to prevent the phone from losing its "water resistance", he bought the DK32 magnetic charging dock for his phone. That made me worried, will charging the phone using USB cable everyday make the phone less water resistance? What could possibly be his/her reason behind this? The only benefit I could think of the DK32 is to make charging the phone much easier and comfortable while able to rest the phone for watching movies and stuff..... So my question is, is there a durability/longevity difference between charging the phone using USB cable or magnetic dock?
Thanks everyone :good:

The manual says that. The protector of the USB connector, has some o-ring that make the phone waterproof. So, using it too much, will gone a damage the waterproof capabillies of the phone...
There is a cheaper charging cable which works very well so no need to spend extra bucks on the dock. I use it on my Z1c and it works very well.

Using USB cable everday means that you have to frequently open the USB Cover flap. If the seal ring of the USB cover flap worn, the water resistance will lose until you replace a new one.
for those who have it and used it for long time..
1) is it charging faster/slower/same than regularly charging? (with the same charger of course)
2) is it actually comfortable? after trying it, do you actually use it daily and enjoy or its a gimmick only and you went back to the regular cable?
3) is it causing any damages? bugs? weird stuffs?
I'm Z owner (it doesn't compatible with magnets) and I'm considering to upgrade to z2/3/3c with mainly reason of the magnetic charging..
Some experience sharing would really help me out here.. YouTube is only for unboxing and showing it but no real tips from experienced users..
Thanks.
Currently using a magnetor x adapter on my charger that I had previously. Its connects really easily and stays on. I read it's a bit stronger (magnetically) than stock.
It charges the device at a similar rate as plugged in but the main benefit is that you don't wear the seal which covers the microusb port.
When I'm done charging I simple unclip the adapter and stick it on my desk as my desk is steel.
1. From my measurement the Max charging at both connections is at ~1.8A until it reaches 90% at this point both drop to 0.8-1A.
If you buy a quick charger you have to stick with micro USB.
2. It's very comfortable but the z4 might drop the magnetic port as the micro USB port got waterproofed.
3. I'm too using the magnetor x cables but they come at an risk: the port can be pulled out by the stronger magnet after some time (the port is only glued in place). I got this fixed with using rewell model glue, it even kept my device waterproof. Sony warranty seems not to cover damaged ports as they aren't selling a charging cable them self (only desktop docks) and never intended the port to work with stronger magnets.
Send with my Xperia Z3 Compact
Thank you both! Really helpful info
Also, if you're buying the cable, consider the case you're going to use if any. Eg. DevilCase doesn't have a wide enough space to fit the old magnetor x.

Wowwwwwww. Good heads up. I'm considering a dock now!
Mag connector is super convenient, second only to inductive charging.
I bought a few of the cheap "Sony" branded ones - magnet is not that strong so you have to line them up and make sure the cable is not kinked or they can pop off. Not good for car charging but I have only had to open the flaps a few times to flash or swap cards so they save major wear on the ports/flaps.
Much prefer this setup over inductive charging since inductive heats the phone and ages the battery faster.
like it
I use mine to charge my phone at night, so I don't really use the phone with it connected. I think it charges at roughly the same rate, and I couldn't go back to plugging it in! It's very convenient.
I also bought two from game-plus on eBay.
One is a microusb adapter and the other is a USB cable with mag on the end. Both are not as stable as the magnetor x but work just as good. The magnetor x1 isn't compatible with a DevilCase but these are. I'll try to post the links in a bit.
These are what I bought off ebay. Came from china:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221540961462
(white)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/221550091355
both work although the snap on is not as secure as the magnetor X, it works. Got the same current pass through of around 1.2-1.4A with my Blackberry Playbook charger, the 2A one that is highly rated for the nexus 5.
I have three of the following cables (work, home and car) initially for my Z1C phone and later on my Z3C Tablet and they have been working fine for over 12 months
http://dx-box.com/brand-new-magnetic-usb-charging-cable-adapter-for-sony-xperia-z1-xperia-z-ultra.html
I upgraded to a Z3C phone over the weekend and the cable works fine with it too.
Whilst the magnet is not super strong, it is enough strong enough to deal with small movement of the phone. Never had cause to complain or curse it. The one I use in the car has never detached as a result of a bumpy road etc.
Bought Magnector X2 for my Xperia Z3 compact and it has an issue with charging a phone fully. Tried it for few times now and it charges only till 74% and stops and the chargers LED and phones screen flashes. When charging with USB everything is normal..

As we all know, the new Zenfone 2 is missing wireless charging capabilities, however there are multiple solutions to enable wireless charging on basically any phone.
Example is http://www.amazon.com/BEZALELĀ®-Wire..._1_4?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1432149451&sr=1-4
It is a cover with a Qi receiver built in, which connects to the charging port and it also provides an independent micro usb port as a part of the case.
The absence of wireless charging in Zenfone 2 is a deal breaker for me ( don't judge) and as soon as an appropriate case is available, I'll get it and the phone as well.
Please post your findings here.
Would love to use wireless charging but using a cover like the one posted is out of question.
I love the slim form and feel of this phone. so i will have to live without QI and other solutions.
This will occupy the mUSB port but would probably be the best current solution.

That's pretty cool. I like wireless charging because I'd rather not wear out my micro usb...but that setup kinda marries you to wireless charging all the time. I'd have to rig up wireless charging in the car and at work...not just at home. You use something like that?

Not sure if I'm going to stick with the ZF2, so I haven't gone out and done all that yet but qi adapters are pretty cheap now for both home and car. How effective some of the car ones are though are another story. iOttie has two models out now that look promising for the car.
There may also be the possibility of placing those adapters into a separate case just meant for wireless charging... remove the case if you need the mUSB port.]
Or... if they do release new back covers... get one that you install the qi adapter in and then one that you won't have the qi adapter in.

Here's a teardown: http://www.myfixguide.com/manual/asus-zenfone-2-teardown/
You could solder the DigiYes posted earlier (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HI8JYFE) onto the usb board. Or you could probably just jam the wires into the connector for a non-permanent solution. The pictures of the DigiYes are a little conflicting, but if it does have leads for the data pins, you'd be best off omitting them (you'll be limited to 500ma qi charging).
This is of course assuming there's enough space to wedge the DigiYes between the back cover and phone.

Which goes back to my point. Why did Asus purposdely omit to include QI/wireless charging pins on the back? It would had cost them hardly anything extra at all, and users could just have changed back cover to get wireless charging...
That one http://www.amazon.com/BLUBOON-Unive...2630&sr=8-2&keywords=qi+wireless+charger+1000 is 1000mA, if it does make a difference. But a case integrated receiver would be much better solution, if ever.

I bought that model. I have a Qi charger (used with a Nexus 5) hooked up to a 2A USB Adapter, and it barely charges the Zenfone. I do not recommend. Maybe a 2A receiver would work better.
It's ridiculous.... why did asus decide not to offer a wireless charging solution similar to the previous samsung galaxies/lg.
Have the pins for charging on the back, and let the user change the case to a qi receiver case or add a qi receiver pad inside. this is honestly the only thing that disappoints on this phone (((((((((((((

I just received mine and there is enough space in the back cover for the receiver to fit in, albeit with a small bulge. It does show my phone as charging even when just held up to my Moto 360 cradle; whether or not it's charging, however, I have no idea.

Thanks for trying. Did you actually solder or just plug it in the usb port? If you plugged it in the usb port, does the cover close without damaging the cable?
I'm asking because if that works, we could potentially design a slightly thicker but hollow back case that could hold NFC and the wireless receive without unnatural bulges.

It closes fine but there is a bulge and the cover is left slightly open.
Here's my solution. Doesn't look good but functional.

Yeah I judge, wireless charging its just another feature. A small battery, a slow processor or low memory now that's a real deal-breaker since your phone wont last a day, apps will run like hell and you will always have to micromanage just for things to run properly.
I'm way more pissed off at this phone not having a removable battery, not just because its a real deal-breaker during travel where I will be forced to lug around one of those brickish power banks but because Li-ION batteries have the lifespan of a mosquito. I already had 2 phones like that and the result was always a massive pain in the ass to deal with.
I rather buy a case with an extra battery than this thing
Three pins USB Board?
Hi there
Maybe some one knows, what are those three pins on the USB board, that are accessible without disassembly phone?? That should be connectors to charging instead of usb socket?
I have a qi charger built into my car. I do not like aftermarket charger added to the phone. So this is a deal breaker for me and will not consider any phones without buildin qi charger.
Looking to buy this phone and own a quick charging card like this. Is it possible to slip the card under the back cover (without a case) or will it cause it to bulge in too unsightly a manner?

It can but causes a gap near the usb port that I could not close. I would've run it inside if it didn't do that.
