Hello XDA,
I just wanted to know if it would be possible to obtain a plan where I would only be getting data from AT&T for my note 4 and not any sms or calling capabilities. This would be of use to me and many others because I already use google voice to make calls and sms which is free and only requires internet. So buy buying only an internet plan, I could still message and make calls just fine through google voice.
considering they have data plans for ipads and such i dont see why not.
AT &T most likely wouldn't sell you a data only plan for a phone.
Yeah that makes no sense to sell a data only plan. You either opt in for all of it or you dont. I tried to do that with a BlackBerry a long time ago and Sprint said no. It'll be no different than just using it for WiFi only unless you're wanting to use the phone outside of WiFi areas.
It doesn't hurt to call and ask but @Jspex is most likely right.
You can get a sim card for any device. No need to tell them what it's for. Just say you need a micro sim with data for some tablet you already have, direct quote. You'll find out if it works or not.
But maybe talk to two different people, or ask about the data sim first, to find out if the costs are the same for data vs data+other.
Att can tell what device you have your sim in when you connect it to their data network. That's why sim cloning is a practice of the past.

If the sales rep tells the system that there's a tablet on that line, that's what you'll be billed for. ATT can see an imei mismatch but they won't change what you're billed for without your consent.

But this would require you to already have the phone. You obviously wouldn't be able to start service and get a new handset this way.

is there ever a legit reason...? Maybe thoughit was stolen, reported imei number...found the phone, and everything's good...something like that?
Maybe he doesn't want/need a data plan. I get wifi almost everywhere i go, and havent upgraded because i can't afford the extra $30 a month.

In fact, I have the same problem, too. I don't want to pay the $30 data plan, and I think maybe IMEI is the information that ATT got me. Do you how to change the IMEI or anything else I can avoid the data plan?
ight...u wanna know the answer? the answer is no....why? because its considered illegal like itll make u look like a thief because usually people who steal phones try to change the imei number to avoid being tracked but im not saying you or other people that ask the same question is a thief....and also another reason is because phone carriers need to know what phone youre using so that they can force u to be put in a data plan which is market stradegy...but to take care of your problems all u do is call up and say i dont want it because i have a financial situation and i can only afford this much and boom, that should help, if not then ull have to tell them that u dont want it because youre not much of an internet user which i highly doubt theyll listen to that...who knows
good luck!

What i've done before is put my simcard in a non-smartphone device (old nokia bar laying around) and call them up, tell them you don't use the tilt2 any more and want to remove the data plan.
Now if you bought your device from a re-seller like wirefly.com or letstalk.com, they make their money from at&t buy getting you to sign onto the data plan and they state in their T&C that if you remove the data plan or don't pay your bill you will owe them the non-contract price of the device (about $500).

My T&C (wireless.amazon.com) only requires 6 months of data plan. It works out to about the same price as buying the phone.

How did you buy the phone? If you bought through AT&T you should have been informed that the phone required a data plan.
If you just want to use the phone without internet I believe that is possible - just remove the settings in the data connections and it won't connect.
Changing IMEI on an HTC Touch Pro 2
I want to change the IMEI code on my HTC TP2 because it's branded to Verizion and I want to use it on Telus. I unlocked it and it works great on Rogers now but Telus says they don't recognize the IMEI.
Is there anything I can do?
Thanks.

You know you can reduce your data plan right? They offer data plans now for as little as 15 dollars a month.

Telus has the touch pro 2 (all be it the world version with both CDMA and GSM capabilities) so I cant see why it wouldn't work on their network. Bring it in to an actual store and talk to one of the customer service people. They can activate any IMEI I'm fairly sure in a few minutes in person as long as the phone is able to work on their network and unlocked.
Changing the IMEI on a Touch Pro 2
Thanks for your reply. I have taken my phone to 3 actual Telus stores and talked with tech support on over a half a dozen occasions. They all say they can't do it. They cannot activate the IMEI. Yes, it's unlocked. I had to do that so I could at least use it with my Rogers SIM. So - would flashing the Telus ROM change the IMEI - are there any other options?
BTW - Telus isn't carrying the Pro 2 anymore but I think that's because there were too many problems with the keyboard hinge.

wow, great response ****.
Geez, first things first:
This belongs in Q/A
Ok, now to the answers:
1. I am sure you meant the SIM card, and yes, everything will work fine. All your info is stored on the SIM.
2. You do not need data for texting, but you will need it on the iPhone. AT&T Will add it to your account, unless you have a prepaid account.
Just so you know. Hope I helped.
I've no idea.

Sorry but no, any smartphone on AT&T's network requires a data plan, whether you pay full retail, or not and AT&T detects the devices IMEI number, you will be prompted by sms to add a smartphone data plan. If you choose to ignore this message, AT&T will automatically add the lowest 200MB/$15 to your account within a few days.
At&T will also ban the IMEI if you refuse, The reason they do this is because people been known to unlock the iphone and go change the APN settings to proxy server, to steal internet and also use tethering to get free internet to the computer.

i don't think ATT has unlimited data on the iphone anymore, 2 gigs is the max.
You do not need data for texting ( though you can text and call using data to cut on bills ) .
I plan on giving this phone to my dad and was wondering if att will detect it. I am running cm9 and will be blocking all data before giving it to him.

Yes, they will detect it. If your dad is on a very old plan (maybe 3+ years since renewing the contract), he might be grandfathered in (meaning that he wouldn't be required to get a data plan for a smartphone, and they won't automatically assign one to him). This doesn't apply to most people though.
lol nope i have used his upgrades for myself. So i guess he is not grandfathered.
Might I ask what phone you are switching to?
either the one x or the galaxy s3. The nitro gets too hot, still has color banding issues, and the battery life is humbug.

All those things will be addressed once a stable version of CM9 is out with an undervolting kernel, but suit yourself. ;p
why would you want to give your dad a phone that overheats, has graphics issues and ****ty battery life?
He bought himself a HTC vivid, so I don't have to worry about giving him one that sucks...
Because in just about every metric, the HTC vivid is worse (comming as a person who does not like non fridge related LG products, here).

Not true, if they detect a smartphone on the network at all, they will attempt to put you on a data plan. Sometimes it's not immediate but it WILL happen.

Yeah, that might be the reason -- I don't have any idea which devices are in their list but it's very possible that T-Mobile phones will bypass the detection. The other possible reason is the one I mentioned earlier in this thread: if you are on a very old plan that didn't have the data requirement listed in the contract.

My mom had exact same situation when I gave her a HTC Inspire 4G, she went to another carrier simply because ATT would not allow her use a smart phone without data plan. Well, they tried to rip her off with $30 a month and at the end they simply lost a customer who payed $45 a month.
Good job ATT.
Someone is giving my wife an LG Nitro HD after she lost her Samsung Captivate. We currently have the $15/mo 200MB data plan, but when I was shopping for upgrades and looking at newer phones online it seemed like we had to switch to a newer, more expensive 4G data plan. If we get a new sim card from AT&T for my wife will it work in this phone? Will we be able to use it without changing her data plan?

I'd suggest calling up AT&T support or going into a local AT&T store to see if they can move your wife from the 200MB 3G data plan to the 200MB LTE data plan (same price - $15/mo). I think they will do it without any problem, but I'm not sure. It's worth a try at least.
I have taken a sim card out of a regular phone and put it into a smart phone and att never added a data plan to it. I had that for maybe a year. If you don't want to pay for data anymore take out your sim card and put it into an old phone and tell att that you sold the smartphone and are using the older phone now, then switch the sim card back without telling att, I've done that too. I can't say they won't force a data plan but this is just what i experienced

It depends on how recently you've signed a contract with AT&T. If you've signed a contract since they implemented the requirement for data plans on all smartphones, then they will automatically switch you to a data plan if you use a smartphone. If you haven't, they won't.
This was with an iPhone 4 when it first came out. I sold it and then but an old razor and they took the data plan off per my request. And did the same thing with my wife's phone but she got an older smart phone but they never turned a data LAN on for it automatically.

I am still currently using an old unlimited plan that include unlimited 2G (EDGE).
I bought my phone on craigslist. Now when I try to access internet , it will show me web2go.com
"your data plan does not work on this device. Click here to sign up for a new data plan".
Is there anyway to by pass the plan check ?
Is unlocking work for this ?
(please don't ask me to change plan. I will do it later)
I really don't think there is much you can do. I would try going down to the tmobile store and ask them why.. Tmobile edge service is unbearably slow.
Sorry wrong post
You would have to update your data plan or buy one from wind, mobilicity, or videotron up north.

That was a while back. Technology has changed. The only hack I know is illegal which has to do with IMEI (not going into that here) cause that's how T-mobile checks. TMOus has a database of all the IMEIs of all TMobile branded phones and nexus phones sold thru T-Mobile. So the moment you connect to their network, if you don't have the right plan you are automatically re-routed to the upgrade website. Trust me on this, there is no APN hack out there that can bypass these checks on these newer phones. But the new unlimited plans are affordable compare to other providers.

us cellular policy:
Eligibility
For devices capable of being unlocked, what are the eligibility requirements that need to be satisfied before a device may be unlocked?
The requesting party:
Must have an active account with U.S. Cellular or
Is a former customer who has fulfilled all financial obligations to U.S. Cellular or
Is an individual owner of an eligible device
Prepaid customers may have a pre-paid device unlocked any time after 12 months from the first activation of the device sought to be unlocked on the U.S. Cellular network
U.S. Cellular will not unlock devices that are lost, stolen or obtained fraudulently.

I will second guyd's recommendation. The reason in your case might be you haven't had an account long enough, or the phone long enough with the account you have, or something along those lines. I remember a carrier I was on (AT&T or Tmobile) used to have a 6 month period if on a prepaid account, or similar restrictions. But I actually got the code sooner than that just by asking. But I think I was maybe 3 months into the period on a long standing account where I hadn't had any other phones unlocked.
But the way people used to try to get around that was by making the request related to international traveling. But it wasn't 100%. Some people would try a few times before it working.
I also think people reported that using chat worked better than calling, or the other way around.
they all liars, i tried unlock my phone i paid $13 After 25 hours they send me code did not work at all and now im trying get money back

you cant just call in and get a unlock code lol... the sprint department i work in is customer account services which handles all those calls.. Sprint along with every other carrier sees device unlocking as achurn clue since typically people want to unlock to use their phones on another carrier sothey give themselves that "last chance" to save a customer.
with that being said, no one u can talk to over the phone at sprint has the ability to unlock phones... they create a case which goes to a dedicated back office team that goes and unlocks it on the back end.
They will notify you via whichever means you requested when the case is created. It typically will take 1 to 3 business days unless they are backlogged at which point it can take up to 5 business days.
This is all of course assuming you meet the requirements which typically means device is fully paid off, phone has been active on Sprint at least 50 days (i think its 50 if i can recall) and account is in good standing i.e. not in collections or suspended for non pay etc etc.
Its done on the backend servers so usually just need the phone to b turned on and connected to the internet. I believe they also send you a code.
All they can do over the phone is create the case and check in the system if its unlocked or not.

Because leased devices are not owned by the user, the end of lease purchase option must be exercised and paid in full before the SIM unlock is completed.
The associated account is in good standing
The device has not been reported as lost or stolen, associated with fraudulent activity, or otherwise flagged as ineligible to be unlocked
For SIM unlock-capable devices (generally most devices launched after February 2015), Sprint will automatically unlock postpaid devices when they becomes eligible.
Sprint Forward Devices
Sprint Prepaid will assist with unlocking a Sprint Forward device under the following circumstances:
The device has not been reported as lost or stolen or otherwise flagged as ineligible to be unlocked.
The device has been active on the associated account for at least 12 months with the account active at that time.
Sprint Forward customers must contact Customer Care to request that their device be unlocked. If you believe you meet the above requirements and would like to request that your SIM unlock-capable device be unlocked, contact Sprint Prepaid Customer Care.

i think that rep did a great job explaining the exact policy in detail which is more than what most get.
If you a gripe its not the reps fault, they are just doing their job and adhering to Sprints policies and procedures.

I called them yesterday five times. After a lot of discussion about why I wanted to leave Sprint she provided me "domestic" unlock codes but told me they would not work on any US network. According to Sprint's information on their legal site she is right. At the 2nd paragraph in the top section “Unlock your Sprint device” and the 5th paragraph under the “Unlocking FAQs”. I’m so frustrated with the hassle and finger pointing from Sprint. After the law passed last summer I'm not sure how they can make their software where it stops the phone from working on another network? The are basically spinning the law language and saying that “Sprint has no technological process available to do this”! Well come UP WITH A PROCESS SPRINT!!! I’m hating them more by the minute.
According to Samsung today they say they have nothing to do with it and it is totally up to Sprint. Sprints says it is the way their phones were manufactured to work for them by Samsung. Is this all just BS to keep you from leaving Sprint?

i assume the code they provided is probably an msl code or somethin that doesnt fully unlock the device.. im suprised they did that for you, you should be greatful lol

In my opinion it is all a shame on Sprint's part. They have internal policy that keeps them from contacting Samsung to actually unlock the phones. So if you meet all of their criteria and they will give you a code. That makes it look like to the press and FCC they are complying voluntarily but actually refuse to let Samsung unlock your Note10 for domestic use. The reason I believe this is how it would work is that no competing carrier can enter the 8 digit code on your Note10 screen. That method with placing the code is exactly the way sprint does it when you need an international unlock to use it in Europe or other countries!!!! They have instructed Samsung to only allow it to unlock for foreign carriers yet they say on their legal page..."Sprint has no technological process available to do this" while they appear to by complying with the FCC directive. I just really love this statement on the legal page referenced above "Even if unlocked, Sprint devices will not necessarily work on another carrier's network." NO THEY WON'T WORK BECAUSE SPRINT WON'T LET THEM WORK!!! How stupid do they think American customers are? I guess pretty stupid since they are getting away with it. Shame on you, Sprint

Really? lol i mean i dont have sprint for coverage reasons but you make it spund like theyre the only company with policies like this.
How do you think myself and other big red users feel when they implemented their new unlock policies? Verizon requires the phone to be activated on the verizon network then you must wait 2 months for an unlock regardless (unless military or govt) and they originally had an agreement with the fcc but managed to get out if it early.
I reiterate Sprint does not have the means to fully sim unlock a device on the spot but do have a means to generate an msl code or other unlock code but as youre aware its a way to fully unlock the device.
And its also a fact that just bcuz a phone gets unlocked doesnt mean itll work everywhere, this is with any device with any company. Sprint cannot guarantee someone elses network lol. If you choose to leave a d tale ur phone why would they guarantee it? They wouldve been dead in the water lol
