[Q] How to bypass tomobile dataplan check? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I am still currently using an old unlimited plan that include unlimited 2G (EDGE).
I bought my phone on craigslist. Now when I try to access internet , it will show me web2go.com
"your data plan does not work on this device. Click here to sign up for a new data plan".
Is there anyway to by pass the plan check ?
Is unlocking work for this ?
(please don't ask me to change plan. I will do it later)

I really don't think there is much you can do. I would try going down to the tmobile store and ask them why.. Tmobile edge service is unbearably slow.

Sorry wrong post

You would have to update your data plan or buy one from wind, mobilicity, or videotron up north.

Last i remember there was an APN hack to bypass this. you are going to have to google a lot and never stop because i dont remember exactly what it was. Sorry other than that thats the most i got for you.

That was a while back. Technology has changed. The only hack I know is illegal which has to do with IMEI (not going into that here) cause that's how T-mobile checks. TMOus has a database of all the IMEIs of all TMobile branded phones and nexus phones sold thru T-Mobile. So the moment you connect to their network, if you don't have the right plan you are automatically re-routed to the upgrade website. Trust me on this, there is no APN hack out there that can bypass these checks on these newer phones. But the new unlimited plans are affordable compare to other providers.

Okay, so I'll ask the question on everyone's minds...
WHY do you want to change the IMEI number??

The point is...if you have a legit reason, I'm sure someone here has or can find the answer for you...however, if it is for nefarious reasons, you won't get much help.

Dude...it's as if you can read my mind...
is there ever a legit reason...? Maybe thoughit was stolen, reported imei number...found the phone, and everything's good...something like that?
Maybe he doesn't want/need a data plan. I get wifi almost everywhere i go, and havent upgraded because i can't afford the extra $30 a month.

In fact, I have the same problem, too. I don't want to pay the $30 data plan, and I think maybe IMEI is the information that ATT got me. Do you how to change the IMEI or anything else I can avoid the data plan?
ight...u wanna know the answer? the answer is no....why? because its considered illegal like itll make u look like a thief because usually people who steal phones try to change the imei number to avoid being tracked but im not saying you or other people that ask the same question is a thief....and also another reason is because phone carriers need to know what phone youre using so that they can force u to be put in a data plan which is market stradegy...but to take care of your problems all u do is call up and say i dont want it because i have a financial situation and i can only afford this much and boom, that should help, if not then ull have to tell them that u dont want it because youre not much of an internet user which i highly doubt theyll listen to that...who knows
good luck!

What i've done before is put my simcard in a non-smartphone device (old nokia bar laying around) and call them up, tell them you don't use the tilt2 any more and want to remove the data plan.
Now if you bought your device from a re-seller like wirefly.com or letstalk.com, they make their money from at&t buy getting you to sign onto the data plan and they state in their T&C that if you remove the data plan or don't pay your bill you will owe them the non-contract price of the device (about $500).

My T&C (wireless.amazon.com) only requires 6 months of data plan. It works out to about the same price as buying the phone.

How did you buy the phone? If you bought through AT&T you should have been informed that the phone required a data plan.
If you just want to use the phone without internet I believe that is possible - just remove the settings in the data connections and it won't connect.
Changing IMEI on an HTC Touch Pro 2
I want to change the IMEI code on my HTC TP2 because it's branded to Verizion and I want to use it on Telus. I unlocked it and it works great on Rogers now but Telus says they don't recognize the IMEI.
Is there anything I can do?
Thanks.

You know you can reduce your data plan right? They offer data plans now for as little as 15 dollars a month.

Telus has the touch pro 2 (all be it the world version with both CDMA and GSM capabilities) so I cant see why it wouldn't work on their network. Bring it in to an actual store and talk to one of the customer service people. They can activate any IMEI I'm fairly sure in a few minutes in person as long as the phone is able to work on their network and unlocked.
Changing the IMEI on a Touch Pro 2
Thanks for your reply. I have taken my phone to 3 actual Telus stores and talked with tech support on over a half a dozen occasions. They all say they can't do it. They cannot activate the IMEI. Yes, it's unlocked. I had to do that so I could at least use it with my Rogers SIM. So - would flashing the Telus ROM change the IMEI - are there any other options?
BTW - Telus isn't carrying the Pro 2 anymore but I think that's because there were too many problems with the keyboard hinge.

[Q] I Don't Want To Pay for a DATA PLAN!

So check this out.... I am an AT&T user and back when the HTC HD2 came out for T-Mobile I bought it from a friend when they signed up for a new contract. Got an unlock code from Ebay and have been using it for the past 2 years without having to have a data plan, never got added automatically to my plan like i have heard happen to others? And I'm wondering why? Is it possibly cuz its a T-Mobile phone? Or is it cuz I still have an old "Cingular" SIM card? I am curious about this because right now, Wally World has a special sale on the phone at $249, plus a $100 gift card, which will bring the phone down to $150 basically, so a pretty damn good deal for a phone just out on the market. And I'm plan on getting it this week, I was wondering if any of you would be able to tell me if at some point if i was able to get a T-Mobile version of the Samsung Note 2 if i could slip my SIM card into it and then be able to cancel my DATA plan, if i told them i went back to a Motorola Razr or something, which worked when i got my HD2? Or will AT&T be able to see that i have a smartphone? Is it the newer smaller SIM card, that will tell AT&T that I have a smartphone, or will the phone it self be what sends info to the servers or whatever that tells AT&T I have a smartphone? Or do you think this method of getting a T-Mobile phone and using an AT&T SIM card will work and I won't get stuck with a DATA plan? Everywhere I go has Wi-Fi so I have no need for the Data plan it will be going to waste.
The newer phones, including this one, use a micro-SIM.
I think it is because you have a phone that is not sold by AT&T that they can't tell what it is, so you would probably be forced to get a data plan if you get the AT&T Note II. I would think that regardless of the sim card you have it would still report your phone model to the network, but I really don't know anything about that, so hopefully others can chime in.
I have been using an unlocked Xperia Pro on AT&T and they don't seem to have a clue what it is or even that it is a smartphone, so I could probably do whatever I want with the data plan.
If you got the international version of the Note perhaps you would not have to have a data plan.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the IMEI? If it isn't listed in there network or something? Maybe I will be alright? I don't know... But back when I got the Tmobile HD2 I went from a Motorola Razr to the HD2 just fine and wasn't automatically enrolled into a data plan, like some others people on at&t were that got the same phone. I don't know how I wasn't, but I'm happy I wasn't and was hoping to find out how to avoid it again. Everywhere I go has Wi-Fi, I don't need to throw away, $15 to $30 extra a month when I'm not even going to use the Data network very often. I have been going just fine with my HD2 with no data plan, just using Wi-Fi.

Right, I know I'll have to get a new SIM card and that is what kinda worries me, I don't know anything about the SIM cards. I was just curious if my older "Cingular" SIM card is what was helping keep me stay under the radar of them not knowing I have a smartphone, or if its because, the HD2 phone I have is from Tmobile and not in their system, so it can't recognize it? I went from a Razr to the HD2 and it still shows as a Razr in my account. An when I get the Note 2 phone, hopefully from Tmobile sometime, I was hoping I can still get away with not having to add a Data plan if i can find out how to avoid it...
Its all in the IMIE ... I was using a Galaxy Nexus overseas on a dumb phone plan because they didnt have the IMIE in system they couldnt tell it was a smartphone but they have cracked down on it now. Only phone that seem to be making it through the loop hole is overseas ones that are not very popular. If you switch to the AT&T version you will 100% be put on data plan if you choose a note 2 from say Rogers there is a slight chance you could sneak under the radar and not need it but for how long no one really knows.
I've seen people come in with T-Mobile phones or international phones and they don't register as a smartphone with the IMEI. So no data is required with unlocked phones.

Do you work at an AT&T store or something? Just curious, cuz it kinda sounds like it from the way you worded that reply. I've read on other threads that AT&T does checks or sweeps every now and then, that might detect a smartphone? Have you heard about that before, not sure what they meant by that?

[Q] AT&T data only plan?

Hello XDA,
I just wanted to know if it would be possible to obtain a plan where I would only be getting data from AT&T for my note 4 and not any sms or calling capabilities. This would be of use to me and many others because I already use google voice to make calls and sms which is free and only requires internet. So buy buying only an internet plan, I could still message and make calls just fine through google voice.
considering they have data plans for ipads and such i dont see why not.
AT &T most likely wouldn't sell you a data only plan for a phone.
Yeah that makes no sense to sell a data only plan. You either opt in for all of it or you dont. I tried to do that with a BlackBerry a long time ago and Sprint said no. It'll be no different than just using it for WiFi only unless you're wanting to use the phone outside of WiFi areas.
It doesn't hurt to call and ask but @Jspex is most likely right.
You can get a sim card for any device. No need to tell them what it's for. Just say you need a micro sim with data for some tablet you already have, direct quote. You'll find out if it works or not.
But maybe talk to two different people, or ask about the data sim first, to find out if the costs are the same for data vs data+other.
Att can tell what device you have your sim in when you connect it to their data network. That's why sim cloning is a practice of the past.

If the sales rep tells the system that there's a tablet on that line, that's what you'll be billed for. ATT can see an imei mismatch but they won't change what you're billed for without your consent.

But this would require you to already have the phone. You obviously wouldn't be able to start service and get a new handset this way.

Switching to AT&T with a Oneplus3.

Hey y'all quick question. I am currently on sprint with a Nexus 6. I have been wanting to switch to AT&T and was hoping to buy a OP3 and use that. My question is will I be able to do that? Also how easy is it.
Shouldn't be that difficult.
You can probably go to a store and just ask for a nano sim card and can get it free. Then call or go online and activate the sim with whatever plan you want when the phone arrives.
You can also get just a sim and plan online, but you'll need to give a bogus imie number if you want to do it before your phone arrives. This is probably what I would do as I just don't care to go to the stores. If you don't have an imei handy, you pobably could find one easily in some photos on eBay. Doesnt matter if your imei is same as anothers, and eventually the system will automatically update to the actual phone's imei anyways.
i have been AT&T customer long time and i have the OP3.
they never said anything to me but in the account online. i see the device stated as "unknown" lol.
i am okay with, i dont want them knowing what phone i use anyway.
i work for att, we don't care if u use an unlocked phone, i have a OP3 and work there, u just need a sim, u can see if ur sim from ur nexus 6 will fit, if so no need to go to store, att will automatically know what phone u have

Why at&t instead of T-Mobile? Just curious, thought everyone who was doing the switching was going to T-Mobile since it is cheaper with more benefits and great reception (most) places nowadays

Personally - I have an Unlimited plan with at&t that only costs me $10 more than the new unlimited T-Mobile plans, but I have no tether speed throttle, until I hit the general 22gb for all my data. I believe T-Mobile's new plans will throttle all tethering regardless of data used, and will throttle general usage after 26gb.
That being said I do have a Ting sim as well (runs off T-Mobile) and is generally faster than At&t in my area, sometimes over 2x. BUT some key areas that I use my phone and where I mainly use tethering, I don't get T-Mobile coverage.
If I could get T-Mobile coverage where I generally tether and if they didnt throttle all tethering without hitting a cap I would switch.
AT&T unlimited plan doesnt allow you to tether unless you have an unlocked phone tho

I've been on AT&T with a OP3 for 3 months now and it works like a charm. Just sign up and throw the sim card in the phone. 100℅ compatible.

Such as OP3?
But good to know, I wasn't aware, thanks.
give att your N6 imei or you won't get LTE and your phone will be detected as a feature phone :/
Like mentioned earlier, just use your Nexus 6 to get your AT&T service activated, and then swap out the sims.

Virgin mobile version on T-Mobile?

I thought for sure I had read somewhere that you could use this phone on T-Mobile as it has the proper bands ....is that wrong?
I can't seem to find any way to unlock this version of the phone. I went through the usual Ebay people and they said they can't do it.
I got a sweet deal on it ($30) but I won't even open the box I'll just return it if I can't unlock it. Virgin Mobile being the garbage company they are won't do it.
Thanks!

you can't. Sprint has it setup you have to have it active on there network for 2-3 months and boost is a year. Now what you should do is buy an unlocked Moto g6 play cause then you could use it on tmo

Garbage company? It's Sprint. It's owned by sprint. I got unlimited data, no throttling, and tethering for 60 bucks. Rooted with a couple extras.
Maybe try not to trash the people reading this. I use virgin Mobile, man I'm just kidding myself on a garbage company because it's all I can get. Nice.
Don't turn it on with the original SIM in it. Pull the Sim out first. Then try putting whatever Sim you plan to use before ever turn it on even once. That's the best chance you have of it working.
Next time pay full price for an unlocked version. Instead of the "garbage" price, on the "garbage" network.
With the rest of us "garbage"
The end
Dang, you seem triggered. Maybe try some ssri's.
I get unlimited everything through teltik for $40 a month so I'm good. I'll just sell it to some shmuck for a profit. No stress here. Thanks for that moment of levity however, good stuff.
