I have the AT&T unlimited texting and calling plan. And I just bought an used iPhone 3G. I changed the SD card and moved it from my old phone to the iPhone. My question is can I still use the unlimited txt and calling on the iPhone or do I need another plan? And one more thing do u need Internet to text? Please respond!!

wow, great response ****.
Geez, first things first:
This belongs in Q/A
Ok, now to the answers:
1. I am sure you meant the SIM card, and yes, everything will work fine. All your info is stored on the SIM.
2. You do not need data for texting, but you will need it on the iPhone. AT&T Will add it to your account, unless you have a prepaid account.
Just so you know. Hope I helped.
I've no idea.

Sorry but no, any smartphone on AT&T's network requires a data plan, whether you pay full retail, or not and AT&T detects the devices IMEI number, you will be prompted by sms to add a smartphone data plan. If you choose to ignore this message, AT&T will automatically add the lowest 200MB/$15 to your account within a few days.
At&T will also ban the IMEI if you refuse, The reason they do this is because people been known to unlock the iphone and go change the APN settings to proxy server, to steal internet and also use tethering to get free internet to the computer.

I'm pretty sure its noted in the terms and conditions, which you would have to agree to in order to use AT&Ts service. So yes, its legal.

i don't think ATT has unlimited data on the iphone anymore, 2 gigs is the max.
You do not need data for texting ( though you can text and call using data to cut on bills ) .

In fact, I have the same problem, too. I don't want to pay the $30 data plan, and I think maybe IMEI is the information that ATT got me. Do you how to change the IMEI or anything else I can avoid the data plan?
ight...u wanna know the answer? the answer is no....why? because its considered illegal like itll make u look like a thief because usually people who steal phones try to change the imei number to avoid being tracked but im not saying you or other people that ask the same question is a thief....and also another reason is because phone carriers need to know what phone youre using so that they can force u to be put in a data plan which is market stradegy...but to take care of your problems all u do is call up and say i dont want it because i have a financial situation and i can only afford this much and boom, that should help, if not then ull have to tell them that u dont want it because youre not much of an internet user which i highly doubt theyll listen to that...who knows
good luck!

What i've done before is put my simcard in a non-smartphone device (old nokia bar laying around) and call them up, tell them you don't use the tilt2 any more and want to remove the data plan.
Now if you bought your device from a re-seller like wirefly.com or letstalk.com, they make their money from at&t buy getting you to sign onto the data plan and they state in their T&C that if you remove the data plan or don't pay your bill you will owe them the non-contract price of the device (about $500).

My T&C (wireless.amazon.com) only requires 6 months of data plan. It works out to about the same price as buying the phone.

How did you buy the phone? If you bought through AT&T you should have been informed that the phone required a data plan.
If you just want to use the phone without internet I believe that is possible - just remove the settings in the data connections and it won't connect.
Changing IMEI on an HTC Touch Pro 2
I want to change the IMEI code on my HTC TP2 because it's branded to Verizion and I want to use it on Telus. I unlocked it and it works great on Rogers now but Telus says they don't recognize the IMEI.
Is there anything I can do?

Telus has the touch pro 2 (all be it the world version with both CDMA and GSM capabilities) so I cant see why it wouldn't work on their network. Bring it in to an actual store and talk to one of the customer service people. They can activate any IMEI I'm fairly sure in a few minutes in person as long as the phone is able to work on their network and unlocked.
Changing the IMEI on a Touch Pro 2
Thanks for your reply. I have taken my phone to 3 actual Telus stores and talked with tech support on over a half a dozen occasions. They all say they can't do it. They cannot activate the IMEI. Yes, it's unlocked. I had to do that so I could at least use it with my Rogers SIM. So - would flashing the Telus ROM change the IMEI - are there any other options?
BTW - Telus isn't carrying the Pro 2 anymore but I think that's because there were too many problems with the keyboard hinge.

hes tryin to say theres no such thing as a windows data plan, android data plan, etc. You have one data plan that covers your acct. whatever you do to your phone is still under the same data plan.

thanks 4 the tip
im not exactly sure what you mean but it shouldnt matter...android or windows because youre accessing the internet through your carriers network...should be the same either way
He sounds like a U.S. Cellular guy, like myself, so let me elaborate:
USCC is charging $25/mo for data plans if you have a BB or WinMo, but that goes up to $30/mo if you have an Android (they claim Android users will eat more network load, though we here at XDA all know that's a pretty vague excuse).
But no, they have no idea (or care) that you are using Android on the TP2 and not paying the $30/mo. Go live it up.
i have been using android on my tmo tp2 pretty much since its been available...i have never had any extra charges
Sent from my MSM using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
I think it depends on your carrier...
Here's a rule of thumb - if the market works & everything else works as expected, you're probably OK. If the market traffic is blocked, then your carrier probably wants you to pay extra $$$ for an Android data plan.
@noodles21o2 and Chizzwizz... no reason to be rude, its a valid question for some carriers... To your posts I say if you have nothing worth while to say, don't post on this site, I cannot stand those bs elitist answers.
@ OP.... if it makes you feel any better, I was using a blackberry as a temp phone until I got my tp 2 replaced, I switched it to a blackberry internet plan but I never switched it back and my internet works just fine in windows mobile and android. I dont think that anyone really knows (or cares) If they really wanted to I am sure they can poll your device... but will they in the vast sea of users using the cell broadband network? Likely not. I wouldn't worry about it.

If you REALLY want to get rid of the data plan, (and your not in contract), then get an OLD flip phone and drop your sim in it. Wait a couple hours after making a few calls & texts with it so that it updates in their system.
Then call AT&T support and tell them that you have this old flip phone and you no longer need a data plan. They should at that time cancel the data plan from your account. Once done, take your sim and put it back into the S III.
NOTE : If you are on contract they won't acknowledge the phone change out and will continue with the data plan, as that was part of the contract that you signed up for when you subsidized the phone. ALSO TO NOTE, if your not on contract and they "see" that you are using the S III, they can at will reinstate the data plan, as it is a "requirement" for devices of this type.
I think a data plan is required on any smartphone. One option is to cancel with AT&T and then sign up on an AT&T prepay plan. The prepay plan doesn't seem to require a data plan, or else they don't seem to be as vigilant at enforcing it. One of my daughters has been using an iPhone and the other has been using a Moto Atrix on an AT&T prepay plan for over a year now without a data plan and no issues.
You can call and demand they take out off. They can't tell you no as long as you have minutes on your plan they can't charge you anything. Just keep demanding they take it off
Samsung Galaxy S3
I know a data plan is required. If you read your contract, it is most likely stated there also. And online. Any official new phone retailer. In the store. Just about everywhere you may have looked at this phone, with the exception of a current s3 users left or right hand, states you have to have a qualifying data plan with all post paid accounts. Pre paid is different.
I'm an AT&T employee. As stated, you can request the plan be removed only if you're switching to a non-smartphone. You can't just go back to using the smartphone, though. If the billing system sees a smartphone in use (your device broadcasts its IMEI on every call) without an appropriate data plan, one will get automatically added to the account, and contract status doesn't matter. An SMS will be sent notifying of the change.

the only workaround that I've found that works is to stick your sim in another phone (basic) use that and go to a store and have them update that. turn on your smartphone without sim in it and then go to mobile section and turn off data or remove APN altogether. Once that is done, put sim card back in and just never turn that back on. Did a test with a personal phone and it never registered with the system, ran it for like 4 months that way (on a personal plan) before I decided being restricted to Wi-Fi was easier said than done. Don't know if they've patched that or not, this was about a year ago, but hopefully it helps

Hello fellow employee!
That's an interesting trick, but I don't think it would work anymore. I've seen the system add packages to suspended lines, which clearly aren't accessing data, just based on the last phone in use.
Thanks! Had to switch sim to a small flip phone...now I use my gs3 as a "tablet"

Sorry for the newbie-ish question, but I hope to get a solid answer before I make a purchase.
I'm running an Android phone on AT&T currently via a GoPhone sim. I don't have or use data, and I don't even care about it. All I use it for is voice/sms/wifi-data. But, I'm needing to replace the phone. What I'd like to do is get a Galaxy Note II, but *keep* the same GoPhone account setup...no data...no mms...just plain old voice/sms.
So, my two questions:
1) I've seen threads about persons trying to make it work with data and the proper apn, but has anyone had success using this just as a 'dumbphone' on their $0.10/minute cheap GoPhone plan?
2) Will I have to get another sim card (micro), and have AT&T transfer my account to it? Or, will I need to cut my current one (normal size) down? Will that work?
Thanks for your patience and expertise!!
Yes, I've tried GN2 as a GoPhone!
Okay, Koohiisan, let me see if I can answer your questions for you.

Sometimes you just have to buy something and try it out to be certain. I did that, and now I think I can answer your questions in a meaningful way.
You'll be pleased to know that yes, you can do this with 100% success! Like yourself, I had a GoPhone account and the GoPhone SIM to go with it. After receiving my Galaxy Note II, I pulled the SIM from my prior phone, cut it with a SIM cutter (normal -> micro) and put it in the Galaxy Note II. It booted up, detected the SIM, and connected to AT&T's network with zero issues! Calling and SMS works perfectly with no changes needed.
I did disable the APN using APNDroid, just so I wouldn't run afoul of AT&T's network since I, like yourself, didn't have data at all.
So, to answer: yes, you can take a GoPhone SIM, cut it (by hand or with a dedicated cutting tool), and install it in a Galaxy Note II and it will work with no issues! Hope this helps! ;D

My next plan is to try to enable the T-Mobile freqs and unlock it so that I can have a little more freedom about adding data down the road.

As I understand it, MMS (picture messaging) requires data. If you are running this same comfiguration I am (dumb-phone GoPhone SIM without data), then you won't be able to get MMS.

I can't post a link to it due to my post count, but if you Google for "How to use an AT&T GoPhone data plan with a 4G Android or iPhone" you'll find the post from marathon studios that I just read on this subject. According to that site, it looks like the GoPhone data APN is actually 3G, and is different from the 4G AT&T APN. So without using APNdroid to change to the proper settings your phone would be pointed by default to the wrong APN.
According to that article, however, you still need to have a GoPhone data package on your plan. I'm on the cheapest $0.10/min plan and I can not add a data package to that plan...so like I said...if you are in my same situation you'll never be able to do it because you can't add the data. :/

LOL...I actually went and spoke to an AT&T customers when I had GoPhone. You CAN get MMS if you're on a phone that is 3G only. Any smartphone requires that you buy the data package to receive it.
Also, you'll have to forgo MMS or use a 3rd party Text Message like PINGER or such to receive MMS. However, if you're on a regular phone, you can only pay a few cents per kb download. this also apply to 3G with data package. I hope this help. Oh, and it doesn't work on iPhone 4/4s or any 4G phone.
FIX
Here are the actual screen captures of my apn settings on AT&T gophne with my Galaxy Note 2 SGH-I317 that allows me to send picture messages, I also took a pic of my cut sim card to show that it works, i tried it without wifi and it still works. It even goes in an out of 4g in the proper areas.
Hello XDA,
I just wanted to know if it would be possible to obtain a plan where I would only be getting data from AT&T for my note 4 and not any sms or calling capabilities. This would be of use to me and many others because I already use google voice to make calls and sms which is free and only requires internet. So buy buying only an internet plan, I could still message and make calls just fine through google voice.
considering they have data plans for ipads and such i dont see why not.
AT &T most likely wouldn't sell you a data only plan for a phone.
Yeah that makes no sense to sell a data only plan. You either opt in for all of it or you dont. I tried to do that with a BlackBerry a long time ago and Sprint said no. It'll be no different than just using it for WiFi only unless you're wanting to use the phone outside of WiFi areas.
It doesn't hurt to call and ask but @Jspex is most likely right.
You can get a sim card for any device. No need to tell them what it's for. Just say you need a micro sim with data for some tablet you already have, direct quote. You'll find out if it works or not.
But maybe talk to two different people, or ask about the data sim first, to find out if the costs are the same for data vs data+other.
Att can tell what device you have your sim in when you connect it to their data network. That's why sim cloning is a practice of the past.

If the sales rep tells the system that there's a tablet on that line, that's what you'll be billed for. ATT can see an imei mismatch but they won't change what you're billed for without your consent.
