Hey XDA Dev community! So I happen to have an old, but completely mint!, Droid Incredible 2 from when I first purchased it from Verizon back in 2011. I no longer use Verizon and switched to T-Mobile and now using a Z3. Anyways, birthdays are coming up soon and i'd like to hand my Incredible 2 down to my younger brother as a gift. BUT, of course as you all figured, there is a slight problem: the ADR6350 is SIM locked, running Android ver. 2.3.4 with HTC Sense ver. 2.1 basically bare bones stock stuck in the year 2011. So I'm trying to figure out if this handset can be upgraded to today's standards (at least ICS 4.00) rooted and unlocked. I'm definitely not wanting to use Verizon so I'm leaning towards T-Mobile prepaid. I'm trying to trick this little handset out for the little guy as I think the ADR6350 is still a half decent starter cell. So is it possible to get this cell up and running without Verizon's chains? I really hope so! because i'd hate to leave this perfect, more than capable, cell in a box for 5 more years to only be a shiny paperweight.. Please help! Walk me through step by step as I am a newb with cell rooting ect. (hence the S/N) But please, only proven stable mods or Roms though!
(mods feel free to move thread to proper location)
PM if you need hardware/software/IMEI #'s
THANKS!!!

I am somewhat reconsidering keeping the HTC Incredible. I got a relatively good deal getting the unlimited text, talk, data plan for $70 plus 20% work discount, but now that the CDMA iPhone is here soon, another good option is present. I am not a loyalist to either OS.
Based on rumors/posts...
Is there really a plan to end the Incredible in March 2011?
Will the phone then lose support from VZW?
Also, any word on it getting Gingerbread from HTC? I know a ROM has been made but wondering if something would come OTA.
Are people having trouble rooting, wiping with recently purchased HTC Inc? Is there an easy way to figure out if I have an "unrootable" device?
Freaking unending OS upgrades make not too long ago released handsets potentially old. Ugh.
Thanks,
Novice

I have heard of very few cases, but most of them are related to user error. I have yet to actually meet someone who was unable to root their INC. Now the EVO is another story.
First you gotta tell me how you got $70 for unlimited talk text and data!!!! lol
Secondly, if you are happy with your phone then why change it, unless you are very tech savvy and need to have the latest greatest phone at all times. I have a 2008 Accord should I change my car just because the 2011 looks SLIGHTLY different, while both get me from point A to point B in the exact same manner with the same reliability?
Thirdly, if you are concerned about the updates and whatnot, then I would suggest rooting your phone. It is scary to first jump the ship but it is so easy and and effortless. You will have the updates before Verizon releases them. You will be able to have so many more/new features of android as well as having NUMEROUS roms to install. I have had my Incredible since launch and whenever I get bored of it I get a new ROM and it feels like a brand new phone all over again! and there are some AMAZING roms out there.
Hope this info helps!
I've had the hero for 2.5 years and its really showing its age (CM 6.1 and fast as far as heroes go but still). I'm thinking I should use my upgrade and get the ET4G in the interim while LTE deploys this year and then sell it around Christmas and get the next Nexus or SGS sequel (HD Screen is the big draw) around that time.
What I need to know is:
Is there a better device release date on Sprint that I can look forward to in the next month or two? (gNexus in May/June too far away)
Have there been any revisions to the ET4G hardware/Firmware since release that will affect rooting ? (very important)
Since Lightsquared's LTE network is currently FUBAR, does Sprint still have an alternate LTE development path (Clear)? There's WiMax where I work in Sacramento for the mid term but I don't want to go 2 years without LTE...
If anyone can comment on Sprint vs Tmo in Auburn/Roseville/Sacramento CA please do. ATT is out of the question and VZ still too pricey (trying to keep it mostly unlimited under $90.00)
Thanks!
Some back-story if you care to keep reading...
I actually upgraded to the ET4G in October and had it for two weeks before returning it even though I really liked the device, Sprint's network speed on it was awful (100k-500k at best where my Hero had been getting 700k-1000k+ and faster in town). The rep demo'd another ET4G side by side and it was my device that was faulty so said he would exchange it but I decided to undo the upgrade and chill.
The decision then was to jump carriers to TMo and get the SGS2 there and some 42mbps Love... but I tested that with a friends phone where I live and no dice, especially with all the buyout/restructuring talk going on (AT&Tmo fails < Dish wants Tmo < now ATT wants Dish which wants Tmo) on top of the mediocre reception (foothills above Sacramento) and complaints of many dead zones all around Sacramento/Roseville. Sprints coverage was fine in my experience.
There has been an OTA update to the E4GT since its release, and another is upcoming in the near future.
I didn't play with the original stock rom at all, so I can't comment on D/L speeds, but the first update addressed network issues. The upcoming update is removing CIQ. I can tell you the E4GT loads pages much faster than my old Hero. (My kids phone now).
As for rooting, this device was the easiest that I have ever done. If you can install drivers for your phone and have the ability to read directions, root should be no problem. Subsequent OTA updates shouldn't effect the ability to root if using ODIN.
AFAIK, no other devices are coming down the pipeline sooner than the nexus. The LG Viper is going to be a LTE phone, but no release date has been set.

I actually upgraded from the hero to the Epic 4g Touch. From personal experience, it's an amazing upgrade. I thought the same thing; should I wait?
Were I in your position, I would wait for the Galaxy Nexus. If that isn't possible, the E4GT is a good upgrade.
As misfit0313 said, there has been an OTA since then. However, this was one of the easiest phones to root with Odin. However, if you're like me and don't have a Windows box to use with Odin, it can be a little bit of a hassle. There's a Linux tool called Heimdall that works wonderfully, though.
There have also been several modem updates to the E4GT. In my opinion, they outperform the stock modem. As far as I know, they don't affect rooting. I got my E4GT 2 months ago or so, and it was rooted in a day.

Same here, I made the upgrade from Hero to E4GT and love it. It's going to blow your mind how much better it is than our Hero's were. I wish Jaybob and those other guys would come this way as well. His Kernels were amazing!
I actually came from a Blackberry Curve, but before that I had an HTC Hero for Sprint. My god, I must've had the factory test dummy, because I had so many problems on that Hero. Dropped calls, soft reboots, wouldn't receive texts, it was horrible. So bad, in fact, I blamed my hate on Android. Left the Hero for a BBCurve.
Now with the E4GT, it is lightyears beyond theHero, Android actually works, and let me not even get started how much better it is than my Bbcurve.
Just sharing my Hero-hatrid story. Hated it!
I was in your shoes for the longest time as well. I had a great experience with the hero and still miss it on occasion. If you could, I would wait for hopefully the 720p phones to come to sprint. If you can't hold off and don't want to waste your upgrade option, try getting a NS4G/EVO4G used on like swappa. Those both have ICS builds and are way faster than the hero. This was one of the options I had considered, but went for the E4GT when Amazon had it for $79.99 on sale.
Also, if you've had it for 2.5 years, you might have been grandfathered with the no premium data charge like I was. But as soon as you upgrade or swap devices (even used) you'll be hit with the $10 monthly charge. Just something to keep in mind...
Thx for the replies. I was ready to to the sprint store today but then I saw the rumored sgs3 may be announced soon. I need to stop looking at my rss and just get the et4g.

"announced" being one thing, "soon" being another, released in the US on a carrier altogether another.
I've stopped looking at the horizon, knowing full well that there is Always something new there.

And i'm unlocked, rooted, and ROM'd already
Came from a rooted Thunderbolt and I just wanna say how much of an amazing phone this is. At first I wanted to just enjoy the ICS experience, but after having a rooted phone...no stock phone will do I love the fact that Gummy included a wifi tether setting as well as the removal of all the bloatware and stuff. This phone is ridiculously fast and i'm now getting quadrant scores more than I would ever imagine on a mobile device (last run was 3200). Anyways, just wanted to say hi and that I am not a proud new owner of a Gnex.
For anyone new to the Android scene, get this damn phone NOW. This phone is pretty much future proof....until quad core Jelly Bean comes out lol.
Otherwise, unlike the TB, I have no plans of trading this phone in for at least another year. The screen alone is enough to keep me as a loyal customer.
Welcome. You have to love the best phone in the world.
You said not, but I think you were trying to say now... guessing by the rest of the post

I've been with Sprint for over 10 years, the last 2 of which I've had an HTC Evo 4G (rooted). I'm looking to switch over to Verizon in the next week or so and I'm leaning towards the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx (unless someone has a better suggestion for a top-of-the-line Android offering). I'm looking for some advice/suggestions on how to make the switch - I have Titanium Backups for all of my apps - is it possible to restore these on the Droid Razr Maxx if I root this too? Also, I'm very used to HTC Sense on the Evo 4G - how will this impact the switchover, and is it possible to flash a Sense ROM on this new Verizon phone? Sorry if any of these questions are dumb, I've been stuck in the Sprint world for so long, I don't know what's going on outside of it. Just looking for some tips from people who've made the switch.
Thanks for any help in advance!

Wrong section. Post in Q&A.
Sorry, feel free to delete this thread.
Have u looked through the rzr maxx forum? I doubt there are any sense roms. Last I checked Motorola locks down the phones hard. Doubt u can even get root, much less an unlocked boot loader.

You wont get a Sense ROM on a Motorola, only on HTC devices as far as I know.
The only thing I've heard about the RAZR is that it gets good battery life, and thats from an unrooted 'average' user perspective, so it must be good in that aspect.
My bro in law is on Verizon and just got the Rezound and is happy with it, coming from the EVO twin before that.
Hiya xda!
I realize there is no Xperia Pro section people just post here about Pro with a {PRO} stub in the front so I hope it's alright..
So I just bought an Xperia Pro with prior knowledge that it is locked to Fido Canada. But I bought it anyways with the sole purpose of modding/hacking it. I currently have a HTC Desire Z that I'm using that was locked to Bell Canada. I debranded it, unlocked it, rooted and flashed CWM installed CM7 on it.
So if the next section is tl;dr, skip to the where the asterisks are I guess.
---------------------------------------
So maybe I should give a little background about myself since this is like my first proper post. My first phone was a was a robust Siemens but it was black and white and I dropped it in the sea so let's just skip that. Then came my second phone which kicked off my modding life/career. It was a Motorola E398 (nostalgia.. I know right?). It was an awesome phone in which the speakers were so kickass that it's primary vibrator was the low bassy frequencies of the speaker. Anyways, it was awesome but being the son of an engineer and an avid DIY kind of guy I knew that I could make it more awesome.
It was released in 2004 but when my mom handed it down to me in 2005 I started my research and became active in the modding community. Basically I was trying to make this "dumb" phone that I had as "smart" as possible in the era when O2 just released the xda for which this community is now named after. (I developed this personality along the lines of "poverty is the mother of ingenuity" kind of thing. Not that my family was poor, but my parents deprived me of material when I was surrounded with "friends"/a**holes/classmates who swam in it like Scrooge Mcduck. I am so grateful now because I can do so much more than them at this stage now).
Since then my motto has been "The software doesn't matter because that can always change." (Of course it's all that matters but that's what I tell people who tell me not to buy HTC but Sony because it comes bundled with some panorama app..)
Then I got two Asus Windows Mobile hand-me-downs from my dad and I started to spend a lot of time here on xda devs learning the ropes and what not. Soon after my dad got tired of me "physically/hardware-ally" messing up the phones (I had to replace the resistive touch screen of my P535 twice and till this day it still has a cracked glass layer because I didn't replace it the third time).
But then I started college and I had the freedom to move up (starting from small beginnings). And that was when I got my second hand Bell Canada branded Desire Z. And that brings me to this day with a Fido locked Xperia Pro sitting next to me with the film still on it (It's second hand, but new, so probably an unwanted gift or something so I got it for a deal )
I realize that I've only mentioned some 4 or 5 phones here (there were some 2 or 3 filler phones that were too "dumb" to mod, I guess there was also my gramps I9000i which I fitted CM7 onto) and so my phone resume isn't that great but I guess I've to be proud with what I have under my belt so far. I'm 19 in 2012 so I've been modding some 8 years since I was 11.
So although I have spent a a lot time lurking the web and modding/hacking phones, notice that I never use the word "development" because to be honest I haven't done any. Up to this point I can follow/understand relatively complex instructions, including, but not limited to, how to debug over ADB and etc. But I'm still an undergraduate majoring in Mathematics B.S Computational Mathematics Option, all the while diligently going through my introductory C++ course.
I hope I haven't broken any "off-topic" rules in this self introductory section of mine.
*******************************
So as you can see I'm not professional or anything, so the first question I'd like to ask is why there seems to be so little third party community support for this phone.. It has been released for over a year now and the search bar still seems to be evading this one in favor for all the other 2011 Xperias. There isn't even an official section for this thing here nor is there official support for it from the CM community (I'm not asking for ETAs).
So getting down to the more technical stuff. I didn't spend a dime transforming my Bell Desire Z from the cave-man-phone that it was into this Terminator it is today. I found methods to sim unlock, debrand, root and everything all just using a mini USB cable connected to the computer. I assumed the same when I got the Pro but I guess I was mistaken? It seems that the only way to sim unlock it now is to use a code or SETools2.
So the main thing is, I know that SETools2 does a multi-unlock (network, bootloader and fastboot) but what if I did them all separately? What if I bought one of those standalone sim unlock codes and then followed instructions here to unlock the bootloader afterwards. Would that work permanently? Or are the codes just some non-permanent "patches".
The simlock seems to be the biggest obstacle right now. I've read all the stuff thereafter to get to my goal, CM9 (the bootloader unlocking, rooting and firmware flashing seems to be composed of instructions that I can follow)
But there also seem to be some new thingymabobs flying around. Like, there seems to be an optimum "baseband" version to work with but heck I don't know how it fits into the context of Pro..
Any help would be appreciated. I appreciate it even if you've merely skimmed my super long rant post
Thank You in advance.
Cheers!
Bump? Please? Anyone?

Holy s**t - you're just like me, going from a Bell HTC Desire Z (great phone btw) to a Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro. I personally switched to Fido because bell has poor indoor reception in the parts of Ottawa and Toronto that I frequent.
I too intended to mod the phone. I checked on the CM website that the device was officially supported before making my purchase. At the time, I was unaware there was such a thing as a locked bootloader (pardon my noobiness).
Even till now, I am 150% positive, it is impossible to unlock the bootloader. Sony and/or Rogers went out of their way to prevent bootloader unlocking for this phone.
Worse still, I couldn't even SIM-unlock the phone (buying a code from sites like cellunlocker.net) and I am fairly certain the new security MCUs are responsible for causing the code to be rejected!
I managed to swap the phone for an LG Optimus 2X with Fido. Unlocked the 2X by code, flashed CM7, waited forever for the European model to get ICS sources, now running official CM10
I'd suggest you try selling the phone or see if you can get an upgrade with Fido if you're on a contract (they have great discounts on last-gen high end models like the Galaxy Nexus and HTC One S).
It's f***ing ironic - Sony has been praised for supporting the Freexperia project and even giving binaries to help with AOSP rom development, yet any carrier-branded handset after 2012 can't be flashed with custom ROMs due to tightly locked bootloaders.
Moral of the story: if you buy an Xperia after 2012, make sure it's an unlocked and unbranded version as only those are guaranteed to have unlockable bootloaders. Even if you buy a carrier locked version and SIM unlock it with a code, it does jack s**t when it comes to the bootloader status.
