I'm coming from the evo side of the market, and i really like the synergy, virus roms,.... Especially the eternity tom on the 3d
Any idea if the team is planning on making roms for the epic? Or are they strictly htc fans?
virus roms rule!!!
dude virus rocks!!! i was using his roms when i had my evo 4g i even donated!! synergy is sick i do hope they come over and do great stuff over here!!
I've noticed that development for this device is alot slower, if you will, compared to the Evo and Evo 3D. I'm glad to see lithid here tho, looking forward to him bringing either AOSP or CM7 to the ET4G. I must say using Touchwiz is much better than Sense (not a sense fan), so this makes waiting easier.
I would take any Rom to play with at this point tho. There's like only 2

probably a good idea to just pm the devs and ask them that sort of cancels the guess work

Actually, I don't agree; the e3d took about a month to get permanent root; this device was rooted a few days after release..
Now, the release of lots of custom roms is slower than the e3d, but I am sure 30 days from now, this will be corrected.
Sending some emails to your favorite devs asking them to develop for this is probably a good idea too!

Actually, I dont agree
After the evo 3d was unlocked that same day the forum filled with roms. So you have to take into account the time that the evo 3d was ABLE to flash roms and count from there to compare not go from the day it was released. There were no roms for the evo for like a month because there was no s-off and no way to flash roms hence development was slow. But the day revolutionary was released there was at least 10 roms posted in the first 48 hours after. With our epic touch we were able to flash a couple of days after launch. So in comparison we have a lot less roms for the amount of time we were able flash compared to the # roms the evo 3d had in the same amount of time after it was able to flash roms.
I do agree development seems slower. I think another reason why it may be is because a lot of people used their upgrades to upgrade to the evo 3d and cant make the switch yet because it would just be too costly. But once we see the price drop and/or used units going for sale on ebay and CL this will make the device more available to devs who want the phone but right at this moment it's not feasible to get the phone

I agree with u. The evo3d was a lot harder to find root. This phone was not. I hope more developers get this phone. I came from the epic and we didn't have a lot of developers. They were awesome though. Hopefully it picks up.

out of curiosity, how quickly was a stock rom available for the Evo3D?
I'm the type of person that doesn't make any changes unless I can revert back, I didn't root until the stock kernel was available.
also I think that part of the reason development may be a bit slower is that this phone is so much better stock than anything else stock.
Stock + root on this thing is already better (IMO) than any other phone with any other rom.
AOSP and CM7 will be the first roms to be really worthwhile.
On a side note, I'm also a huge fan of Virus.
I think a stock rom was available a day or so after the evo3d was rooted; its hard to remember, because things happened so fast after root with that phone.
Good point about how awe sum this phone is with out root; I was going to root it the first day, but, frankly, after reading all the little quirks people were having initially after rooting, and, the lack or really interesting roms or cm7 right now, I have chosen to wait as well
Lets hope Virus/Myn/Leosright, and Aanikam, and some of the other folks with E3D's get their hands on this phone, or, at least decide to do some roms for it...
No disrespect to the folks that have made the currently available roms/kernels..

I want to say that the official RUU was out before the evo was unlocked but I'm not 100% sure so dont quote me on that. The day my evo 3d was delivered was the day revolutionary was released. So we have been able to flash stuff for about 2 weeks now. In the first two weeks after the evo was unlocked and able to flash there was tons of roms and tweaks (only a few kernels though). So in the first two weeks both phones were flashable there was considerably more development on the evo 3d. I do hope it picks up though I'm waiting for cm 7 so I hope someone from CM picks this phone up so we can get a CM 7 build, if not I'm running it stock until then with adw ex

Mine is, running several different roms. I still have both and it's very noticeable but I am on the stock kernel still. I have no doubts this one will be faster once it's dug into a bit more. While the Samsung gets a better Quad the HTC is much more snappy/peppy.
I haven't tried Zedo's kernel yet though so not sure if it's making a speed difference. There are issues he is still working on with that one. I'm waiting for that one to get all fixed up.

It wouldn't hurt to take into account that this phone is just a mere 2 weeks old and a lot of people are still waiting to receive theirs as they are in a backorder queue. When the 30 days is up, we'll have a better idea how the development will be. It takes time to get developers to a phone, you can't expect them to run straight to Sprint and buy the phone on release day.
It's also worth taking into account that the Evo 3d was the first actually upgraded Hardware platform that had been released with Sprint in almost a year. In that respect the evo 3d had an advantage as their were a lot of users ready to jump ship to a new phone.
It's too bad that Samsprint couldn't get this phone out sooner to be on par with the evo 3d launch. That would have been a site worth seeing and I dont think you would see such heavy development for the 3d, expecially since it shipped with a locked bootloader.
My .02
I've had the hero for 2.5 years and its really showing its age (CM 6.1 and fast as far as heroes go but still). I'm thinking I should use my upgrade and get the ET4G in the interim while LTE deploys this year and then sell it around Christmas and get the next Nexus or SGS sequel (HD Screen is the big draw) around that time.
What I need to know is:
Is there a better device release date on Sprint that I can look forward to in the next month or two? (gNexus in May/June too far away)
Have there been any revisions to the ET4G hardware/Firmware since release that will affect rooting ? (very important)
Since Lightsquared's LTE network is currently FUBAR, does Sprint still have an alternate LTE development path (Clear)? There's WiMax where I work in Sacramento for the mid term but I don't want to go 2 years without LTE...
If anyone can comment on Sprint vs Tmo in Auburn/Roseville/Sacramento CA please do. ATT is out of the question and VZ still too pricey (trying to keep it mostly unlimited under $90.00)
Thanks!
Some back-story if you care to keep reading...
I actually upgraded to the ET4G in October and had it for two weeks before returning it even though I really liked the device, Sprint's network speed on it was awful (100k-500k at best where my Hero had been getting 700k-1000k+ and faster in town). The rep demo'd another ET4G side by side and it was my device that was faulty so said he would exchange it but I decided to undo the upgrade and chill.
The decision then was to jump carriers to TMo and get the SGS2 there and some 42mbps Love... but I tested that with a friends phone where I live and no dice, especially with all the buyout/restructuring talk going on (AT&Tmo fails < Dish wants Tmo < now ATT wants Dish which wants Tmo) on top of the mediocre reception (foothills above Sacramento) and complaints of many dead zones all around Sacramento/Roseville. Sprints coverage was fine in my experience.
There has been an OTA update to the E4GT since its release, and another is upcoming in the near future.
I didn't play with the original stock rom at all, so I can't comment on D/L speeds, but the first update addressed network issues. The upcoming update is removing CIQ. I can tell you the E4GT loads pages much faster than my old Hero. (My kids phone now).
As for rooting, this device was the easiest that I have ever done. If you can install drivers for your phone and have the ability to read directions, root should be no problem. Subsequent OTA updates shouldn't effect the ability to root if using ODIN.
AFAIK, no other devices are coming down the pipeline sooner than the nexus. The LG Viper is going to be a LTE phone, but no release date has been set.

I actually upgraded from the hero to the Epic 4g Touch. From personal experience, it's an amazing upgrade. I thought the same thing; should I wait?
Were I in your position, I would wait for the Galaxy Nexus. If that isn't possible, the E4GT is a good upgrade.
As misfit0313 said, there has been an OTA since then. However, this was one of the easiest phones to root with Odin. However, if you're like me and don't have a Windows box to use with Odin, it can be a little bit of a hassle. There's a Linux tool called Heimdall that works wonderfully, though.
There have also been several modem updates to the E4GT. In my opinion, they outperform the stock modem. As far as I know, they don't affect rooting. I got my E4GT 2 months ago or so, and it was rooted in a day.

Same here, I made the upgrade from Hero to E4GT and love it. It's going to blow your mind how much better it is than our Hero's were. I wish Jaybob and those other guys would come this way as well. His Kernels were amazing!
I actually came from a Blackberry Curve, but before that I had an HTC Hero for Sprint. My god, I must've had the factory test dummy, because I had so many problems on that Hero. Dropped calls, soft reboots, wouldn't receive texts, it was horrible. So bad, in fact, I blamed my hate on Android. Left the Hero for a BBCurve.
Now with the E4GT, it is lightyears beyond theHero, Android actually works, and let me not even get started how much better it is than my Bbcurve.
Just sharing my Hero-hatrid story. Hated it!
I was in your shoes for the longest time as well. I had a great experience with the hero and still miss it on occasion. If you could, I would wait for hopefully the 720p phones to come to sprint. If you can't hold off and don't want to waste your upgrade option, try getting a NS4G/EVO4G used on like swappa. Those both have ICS builds and are way faster than the hero. This was one of the options I had considered, but went for the E4GT when Amazon had it for $79.99 on sale.
Also, if you've had it for 2.5 years, you might have been grandfathered with the no premium data charge like I was. But as soon as you upgrade or swap devices (even used) you'll be hit with the $10 monthly charge. Just something to keep in mind...
Thx for the replies. I was ready to to the sprint store today but then I saw the rumored sgs3 may be announced soon. I need to stop looking at my rss and just get the et4g.

Ok so i'm going to go upgrade in a couple of hours and I need to know. It the Galaxy S2 a good upgrade?
Currently I am running Passion ICS 4.0.3 rom on my phone... and everything works well....
I don't see any ICS production here for the Galaxy S2... I actually see a lack of good roms or current CM7 nightlys like the vibrant has/had?
Any input?
At the moment all of the Devs seem to be on hold waiting for ICS source code to be released for our phone before wasting there time making others that will be out of date when ICS comes out. I have to be honest it does appear that there is a lack of Dev support here, but thats because they are either waiting for the source code or they jumped ship to the GNexus. No question about it, this is the best phone on TMO and all its missing is ICS, which will be coming in the next few months.
What he said... The worst thing about this phone is the lack of devs, other than that this truly is tmo best phone, I love it
Swyped from my Sgs2 T989
There may be a lack of so called development but the ones we do have are real devs. Wish Roman and whitehawx were stillhere but oh well. Back on topic I came from a vibrant and glad I did. This phone is way better and your wont be disappointed. When the vibrant first dropped we had three quality devs....team whiskey ..Eugene and master...that was it. Most of vibrants support came after a year of release...its biiggest boom being the last six months...imagine that. Anyway get this phone buddy you will be happy
i came from the vibrant to this phone....if you are looking for roms and kernels to flash obviously the vibrant has more support...but if you are looking to upgrade purely on the basis of having a better phone, this phone is faster, can handle more processes and has a bigger screen...so in terms of a phone...its fantastic...development for this phone will slowly increase....if are you content with your vibrant and or just looking for a new toy to play with then maybe you should just wait...but if you are looking for a great phone..this is it, i switched a few months ago and have no regrets
Dude we have rk, tdj, eugene... The SR forum's dev applies to us too. And xboarder might be coming over soon too... Lack of support.. Psh

I loved my vibrant very much. I was super flash happy on that device. The biggest thing about the sgs2 vs vibrant is that everything on the phone worked out of the box. The vibrant devs sort of served more of a purpose just getting the damn thing to work properly. The sgs2 is without a doubt the best and most capable phone I've ever owned. Get it. Flash Juggernaut and wait for Eugene's new rom. We'll have ics soon enough.

I have to say this is the first phone I have had that I could almost be happy with without any mods at all. Start with that as a platform and you are in for great things. As said before we have some great devs already, and more on their way. It just takes time.

I Also came from a Vibrant and am not disappointed. There is not really a lack of development here, especially if you include the Skyrocket dev section. >I am using a SR rom my self< There are several Twiz variations and a few kernels.. So honestly not sure what your talking about..
I had the Vibrant from the day it dropped and is didn't see a working CM7 rom for almost a year. and untill recently had a very slow dev section. The only reason it has mostly working ICS is because its a port from the I900, which means shatty battery life and random issues.
To answwer your question.. this is an excellent upgrade to the Vibrant.

WAYNE?! :banghead:
that bootloader issue is the same that me and many others had when the first atrix was released, it was annoying seeing others flashing roms and i'm stuck with a great phone with potential but a locked bootloader. Then by the time they finally unlocked the bootloader most devs/users had abandoned the device and it hardly got any support. But anyways, i kept my Nexus(that i bought a month after launch) and bought an iphone 4s about 2 months ago, i love it, its a great device and iOS is a lot better than what people been saying about it, but after flashing JB then trying AOKP milestone 6 made me realize how much i miss my Nexus. The SGSIII was never a factor to me(i really don't like the design, plus touchwiz is not one of my favs coming from a SGSII to a Nexus). Also another small reason that i decided to try the iphone is because every phone will get the latest update(unless it's outdated like the very first iphone) and that plays a huge role when i buy phones due to the fact i would like a phone that'll get the latest updates or at least great dev support, cause i wouldn't wanna have to buy another phone due to the fact that it won't be getting upcoming updates, or the devs abandoned it......

Not disagreeing about going from gs3 to gnex because I did the same thing, but you can absolutely put apps in folders on the gs3. You just can't drop an app onto another on the home screen, you have to hit the menu button first and then create a folder into which you can then add any apps you want and then rename the folder.

Dont kid yourself with the whole my iphone will always get the latest updates stuff. Sure you will get an update, but that update will only give all the new features and bells and whistles to the newest iphone. I have owned several iphones and the problems with their updates is that they design them to be compatible with all the phones but that doesnt mean they run great on all the phones. I remember when i had the Iphone 3g and they came out with the 4.0 update, it made the phone so unbearably slow that everyone with that phone had to revert back to 3.0. Apple even just announced that the 3gs which they are still selling in stores wont get most of the features of the 6.0 update.
just saying how i came back to the Nexus too, its all relevant to the topic

Not a bad payoff there.
I love my nexus but having owned a 4s out of morbid curiosity for a whole 2 weeks I have to say if I could have 1 thing iOS has on android it would be the ability to back up my phone like they do. I know we have tools and various apps we can use but that's the one and only thing that impressed me was to be able to back up your phone wipe it, and restore everything with one click. Other than that there is no way I will ever own another. They are worse than a Motorola on Verizon.

i kno that, i'm not the type that would hold on to a phone that long to be that far behind as a 3g, i was saying in general, compared to android which is not always guaranteed an update, and no i'm not bashing android, i been using android since the G1 and definitely a huge android fan, just wanted to try something different for a change, but u do have a point though

Honestly the single biggest reason I switch back was because the lock bootloader and no jelly bean . I figure by the time the update jelly bean there gonna be released the galaxy nexus 4 and a new os or update anyway. 2. i hated S voice. 3.the size difference between 4.65 and 4.8 I just hope it's 3 was just too big and the nexus is felt better my hand . The nexus just felt better and the texture as well. 4. I know I only had it for a day but I just didn't like the physical keys, I love the on screen keys. 5. I think it's a better looking phone.

how much did you buy it for? i looked at ebay and buy now price is 50-100 bucks more than what the play store offers
right now im on the amaze 4g.. and the development is horrible... it has good hardware but oh my lord HTC refuses to release kernel source for the darn device. i dont know if HTC does that for the rest of their device ughhhhhh so im reluctant to buy another device from them. should i join you fellow gnex owners?
what device did you come from? ive been looking through the dev thread for the gnex and paranoid rom looks very enticing.

Make the switch, you won't regret it. The specs on the Nexus are not only better (aside from camera and lack of sd slot) but development is light years ahead of the Amaze. There will of course be a new Nexus in the next 3-4 months, but it won't be $350 that's for sure. I came from an Amaze, and a T-Mo S2 and don't regret it one bit.

I come from the Evo 3D, came to Galaxy Nexus due to HTC not releasing the Kernel Source. Now development is dead. Oh and I got it off of eBay, it cost me $255USD with shipping. Clean ESN, light use, comes with everything that comes. The headset, the Charger, everything.

im not surprised with what you just said..
ugggghhh its just so irritating. they release phones with awesome specs but then you cant developed for it....
i hate it when people say "oh we'll get the latest update from cyanogen xx.xx...."
which is BULL****... considering half the time cyanogen wont ever be as refined or close to being complete on said device considering the lack of kernel source/lack of support from the manufacture... people buying non nexus devices are just being delusional. i have come to that conclusion. maybe manufacturers need to beef up the specs of their nexus device in the upcoming years
i believe the only non nexus device that i believed had a blossoming of development is the T-mobile G2\htc vision (i personally had that phone and had lots of fond moments flashing roms in)
other than that nexus all the way. i just wish htc makes the next nexus or there would be 5 of them in the future
HTC is becoming like Apple at the moment... Their One S .. non removable battery and no SD card slot.. and They won't release their damn Kernel Sources.. they discontinue any device and take a whole lot to update them. Not to mention that if you ask and tell them that there is something wrong with your device they say "Hello we are sorry to hear. If you want to try to stay up to date and see if your phone will be able to be fixed join our completely ****ty Twitter or Facebook, because we don't give a **** about you guys, you gave us money , we don't care and we just want to get more popular."
Their support is ****.

Have to disagree with you on the "blossoming of development" part.
Have had the captivate. Which to this day. Is still going strong. And had a jellybean port before the gs3.
I had the epic touch 4g and the att gs2. Which are both still amazing phones going strong. And I am now onto the gs3 which isn't even 2 months old. (U.S release) and the number of ROMs and support for it is overwhelming.

You guys are making me inpatient. My Galaxy Nexus won't be here until 5-6 days. So all this reading is making me happy and impatient. I really want the Galaxy nexus :'3
I actually am getting a nexus on Tuesday, coming from a Droid Incredible which has working ports of - Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.
Its a device that won't die with great devs still, sense 3.5 roms were last developed by Newt/Joelz/Wildstang/Puremotive.
We had an amazing dev and community spot, its dying down as others are upgrading.

Yeah, I can see most people getting a Gnexus are HTC.

High development and seems to be a great and strong community plus the nexus will be my second android phone.
I don't wanna say the nexus is the pinnacle of android phones per-say but its the one fellow nerd lovers and rioters alike will rejoice in a happy community thanks to Google and Samsung.
I honestly cannot wait to start enjoying this phone! Its big enough for my hands, my 3'7 incredible.. my hand swallows this phone and I needed a big phone.
Ahh I'm ecstatic!!!

+1 on that bro, I can't wait for it to be here. And for fun's sake I even spent all night watching an Unboxing video. The only time I have ever touched the Galaxy nexus was in a Sprint store. I looked at the Gnex Screen, then back at mine. Mine looked ****ty compared to the Galaxy Nexus' Gorgeous Screen Resolution. It looked so beautiful. Messed with the UI and felt so smooth. And that was ICS. They say Jellybean is 5x Better than ICS. The moment I get the phone I'll root it and install a good JB Rom.
What's a good Sprint Galaxy Nexus Jellybean Rom?

I don't know about the Sprint variant but with the Verizon version I have had great luck with Euroskank CM10 ROM.

5 days to go
I also noticed that the people in the Nexus Community are cheerful and don't throw you off for saying something wrong. They're actually polite. Some people in the Evo 3D threads answer questions with sarcasm. As if they're perfect.

For your first jelly bean ROM I recommend going with Bug less Beast. I'm running it right now and it is as stable as anything and I'm about three releases behind (7/19 version.) Its my first rom and its making me a root believer!

I just got a nexus today the unlocked version. I'm debating whether I should root it since I have the stock jelly bean. I came from an iPhone 4s. This will be my second android phone though . My first was a skyrocket. I'm liking what I see so far though.
Of course you should root! The development is astounding I personally have spent many hours molding and tweaking mine and loved every minute of it. We have some of the best and most generous devs in the world
