It feels like my phone can't last much more than a day.
Am I expecting too much juice from my phone or is this the normal amount it should be at?
Generally speaking for me I only last about 12 hours unplugged. Even when not in use on idle, i seem to lose 1% every 10-20min or so.
Someone please shed some light based on these battery screenshots and tell me if its normal or not.
Your biggest wakelock is audio out. Turn off keyboard sounds and screen touch sounds and lock sounds. Now your phone can sleep better.

You seem to have fairly frequent screen-on usage paired with frequent intervals of GPS usage (see battery graph).
Are you using GPS that frequently? If not, id investigate on why your GPS is being utilized so frequently.
I'd say based on your usage, your battery life is fairly normal.
Two hour screen time... That sounds about normal to go from full to dead. You're lucky the phone made it 12 hours. Many people get a lot less.

Two hours screen on time is normal? I hope you mean for the Verizon version..

with wifi on the whole time, that should help the battery last longer. I'm on LTE version and my battery life is similar to yours, but on 4G.
Based on your info, I would guess that you can improve it by turning off some things going on in the background. Widgets, weather, screen brightness, anything else using lots of background data or ram?
Sleeping with 4G, sync, and GPS all on I lose 1-2% per hour. But that's with no background apps other than stock OS stuff + AVG. I normally get 2.5 hrs screen time 100%-0% on 4G over a 12 hour period.
Well there's half the problem right there, facebook, it's refreshing for updates all the time.. also, underclock your phone so the max is 920MHz might save some, unless you wanna do some gaming or something it doesn't matter. Audioout seems to cause a lot of wake time for all android phones.. seen it in the epic 4g forums. But yessiree Bob.

Normal for a lot of people. Just look at all the poor battery threads. I get 2:30h with my gsm GN running Wifi and very minimal apps which sync. My browser is inverted and my screen brightness is low.
I get good standby time, but that doesn't really comfort me as I have a powerful phone I can't actually USE.
You will hear people say they get great battery life or they are fine with 2h screen time, but I just think they don't want to admit that a $700 phone in 2012 should have better life than this.
If you ask for advice, people will tell you to stop complaining and / or get a new phone. Don't reply to them or an XDA mod will threaten to ban you. Happened to me.

If you watch movies, your screen time will be higher, but I use my phone for productivity and it dies fast.

With standard battery and stock ROM this phone can only give 2.5 - 3 hours screen time, which is unacceptable IMO in this day and age.
Turn GPS off, turn wifi off, don't use this app, only use that app, turn sounds off, don't increase the brightness, limit the cpu etc etc... So why did I buy a smartphone that I can't use then?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I have owned more android phones than I can count, and tried more ROMs and Kernels than you can imagine. Countless times I have seem claims of improved battery life, and until recently nothing made a noticeable difference short of not turning on the phone. I am running the latest GummyNex Rom with the Franco Kernel 15.2 and it is shocking. I have verified the last two nights by leaving phone off the charger. Night #1 -8 hours 30 minutes phone sat while I slept, on 4g GPS enabled, and used 8% battery. Last Night 8:15 phone sat, same conditions only 7% battery usage. I am using the "Franco Turtle" governor and notice not performance degradation and only incredible battery life. Very impressive
Background: Rooted, stock rom.
- Just bought the phone on Saturday, charged it fully and played around with it on Sunday literally just moderate texting, making short calls, and taking a couple of pictures and the battery pretty much dies by 2 PM. Will the battery life improve over time?
This is with the settings tweaked to maximum battery conservation (15% screen brightness, NFC/S Beam off, No motion controls, battery savings on, the works.)
- Also, in that time the phone seemed to be fairly hot, I cannot recall the temperature, but it was hot to the touch. And when I tried downloading the OTA update from T-mobile, the bottom half of the phone (everything below the battery) became drastically hot. But the battery remained relatively cool. Is this something I should worry about?
I'd just like to know so I can exchange the phone while I still can.
I just got mine on Friday and I noticed the same issue. It seems to get hot whenever its doing something data intensive live streaming a youtube vid or downloading a app.
Thanks for the response.
I used it for about 15 minutes this morning reading a web page on Chrome and it seemed to get warm.
Also streamed HD YouTube as well as Spotify for about 15 minutes and it's still warm.
The thing is, these are the first really data-intensive things that I have done so far.
I'm going to go through a whole day just to see what happens.
Forgot to add that I even reduced my CPU through SetCPU to 1.2Ghz the since I rooted it
It's at 87% after 2h 20m 46s on battery.
With only 42m 23s of screen time.
It should calm down after a couple of charge cycles. For battery. Also make sure auto brightness, auto sync is off, gps, motIon control, voIce cmd, etc.
I dont use the battery saving feature and get great life. But I remember a few times it getting hot after a fresh flash but it always calmed down for me. Getting warm is normal, especially if on the charger while using.
Theres a lot of features I like but dont use much so for me its worth the few extra seconds to turn it on/off.

Update
So I have completed my school day.
11h 25m 45s on battery
Battery percentage is at 57%.
I barely used the phone however.
Sent about 10 texts, went on Chrome and searched the web for about 15 minutes, took 8 pictures, instagram for 3 minutes.
Also kept getting e-mails (probably like 10 of them)
I turned on Power Saving mode as well.
Screen is the highest with 1h 32m 24s using 38% on my battery.
Would this be normal on the stock T-mobile rom with no updates?
I've never had an Android phone before so I wouldn't know.
But after researching, some people managed to be at around 70% usage by the end of the day. While doing more intensive tasks.
It's probably the service when you're inside buildings. If it's bad service it'll drain your battery.. if it's constantly trying to connect 4g you're going to have a short time *insert ski instructor meme*

At home, I literally get 0-2 bars. But at school I can consistently get anywhere from 1-4 bars.
This could possibly be it, but I am not too sure how much my signal fluctuates throughout the school.

I had given my local T-mobile store a call and they said that smartphones should be regularly heating.
It's strange to me how I can do a task a simple as texting and it heats up though.
How long did you have the borked S3 for?
I 2nd the bad carrier coverage notion. Just as a test, I put my phone into airplane mode while watching a video. I watched the same video while out of airplane mode. The battery drained faster while on the carrier's network than not. I noticed the signal meter was at 3 bars before I played the video.

Better Through Time
I decided to instal CM10 on my phone and it really did help.
I just got home from school/finished most of my day and here's the update:
63% left
9h 45m 29s on battery
1h 21m 33s screen on time
This makes me feel so much better considering that I actually used the device more today than ever before.
(HD YouTube videos, streamed Spotify, lots of internet browsing, more calls/texts.)
Even with the added usage CM10 seemed to have improved my battery life by a lot!
Not sure if I can totally attribute it to CM10 or just more charge cycles, but everything seems to be working better for me.
Thanks for all of the help!
The phone still runs hot sometimes but it has decreased over the last couple of days.
I have noticed on my phone that since installing Liquid Smooth rom has resulted in much better battery life than on the stock rom. I'm assuming that Samsung's stock TouchWiz isn't as optimized as the ROMs that the devs make on here.
Which is a definite plus to having a device that has a strong community of developers behind it.
That happens to me as well. I have kind of gotten used to it. Just slip on a case so when you hold it your hand doesn't get sweaty and you should be fine. I would assume that's where the processor lives, but I am not too certain.
What sort of battery life are you all seeing with this years note? come from the ipad 3 where i usually saw 10-11 hours screen time and 2-3d standby, today is the first time ive had it from 100% and i only lasted 6 hours screentime with 7 hours overall on time, i still havent run it down completely yet but surely i should be getting more than this?

I came from an ipad 3 as well and had the same problem until I disabled several apps, turned off GPS, etc and over the long weekend I was getting ~12 hours of web surfing.
I haven't rooted yet so that should be a number that can improve. I'm sorta trying to wait for a root that doesn't trip knox. I don't want a custom rom so no reason to install a bootloader and lose my warranty if I can be patient. Tried Cydia Impactor but I had already upgraded to MK1. I'm wondering if the shipping rom (P600XXUAMIE) might have the 4.3 vulnerabilities unpatched.

I thought it was more, but looking at the list.. go to settings, General, Application Manager, select the prinstalled apps you don't want running all the time and click Turn Off. I've turned off BlurbCheckout, Businessweek+, NYTimes, Polaris Office, Screen Saver and Twitter. I think more important was turning off GPS, Screen Rotation, Bluetooth, Reading Mode, Smart Stay, Smart Pause, Smart Scroll, Auto Brightness then adjusting the screen brightness to something a bit less retina searing than the default.

I've had mine since Saturday soooo, 5 days now. I get easily 10-11 hours of screen time. I loose about 1% per 8-9 hours in stand by and i loose about 9% per hour of video streaming from either my Netflix, HBO GO, or Slingbox account and that's with brightness about or just above 50%. I'm also NOT rooted yet. Totally stock with just certain apps turned off and i restrict a lot of the background data on individual apps that i don't need running background data
Have you guys try using this damn thing at 100% while indoors? It hurts the eyes with a white screen.

Hmm, I think I misspoke about the background data on this tablet. I do that religious with my phones (Bionic, GS4) but I went to look at what i did and there is no option to turn off background data. I would normally go to settings>data usage and tap whatever app and the check "restrict background data". I must have thought I did that on this tablet but obviously not.
i think the battery life is great on my tablet - i dont game with it - today it has been running for 13 hours 48 minutes with 5 hours and 48 minutes of screen on time and battery is at 52% - not rooted yet - i have everything i dont use turned off ( ie. smart stay/scroll, air view ) and running nova laucher prime and dont use power savings mode

I dunno, doing pretty good over here. Rooted, but have no froze anything. Only rooted to get gameCIH installed screen is between 25% and 50% brightness depending on what im doing or where i am. I mostly just use it for playing a few games here and there, taking notes during lectures.. etc. This is about typical, sometimes I get a little less, screen brightness seems to play a huge role in battery drain (obviously) but ive never run it dead during the day.. ever. I start every day with 100% charge and dont usually plug it in till I go to bed. If I have a charger around and im not doing anything ill plug it in (I mean.. why not) but I don't ever have to "worry" about it going dead on me.
I'm currently on 9 hours of battery time, probably at least 4-5 hours of that is screen on time reading comics or doing sketchbook pro pictures.
Battery is on 46%.
So yeh, battery is fine. Brightness is about 30%.

Right... It's better then an IPad. I doubt the IPads beat 11-12 hours of screen time at roughly 50% brightness and an IPad has a smaller screen and less pixels to power.

Do I have to charge the device fully before turning on like some cell phones are?! or I can just start using it right away?!
and what kind of battery it does?! how's the charging process?! should I wait for it to be fully discharged, and then charge it to 100 percent?! or should I keep it between 40 to 80 percent to save the battery life...

Dude, just turn it on and use it. The days of cycling a batter (let it drain and then charge to full) were over in the 90's with Ni-Cad batteries.. these do not develop a memory. From dead, the tab will take 5-6 hours to charge with supplied charger and in the wall. Using it while charging will still cause it to lose battery but a a much slower rate.
So after purchasing the Nexus 7 (2013) 16gb WIFI edition I noticed a problem with the battery that is really bugging me. Im on stock non rooted 4.4.2 and the battery is HORRIBLE. Moderate use finds me having to charge the thing almost twice a day. Its especially bad when im watching a youtube video or streaming a movie on netflix (Non GPU intensive gaming also), it will go down about 1% every 3 minutes not exaggerating. I have heard stories on here of Nexus 7 owners getting like a day or two out of the battery. Is there some kind of ROM or kernel out there that is good battery life? Is my tablet just a defect?
p.s. I have my brightness medium, GPS off, and i keep my WIFI always on.
Battery isn't intended to go a day or two and haven't heard of anyone's doing that. I use elementalx kernel, slightly over clocked, get about 10 hours with moderate use. Hard to tell now because I keep mine on a wireless charger when I set it down.
Netflix does drain the battery a lot. If you watch it all day you're gonna have to charge it. Can try out any of the Roms and kernels, see what works for you.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
My nexus battery isn't that different from yours so i'd say it's not a defect from your tablet but it's our battery that isn't that good. I use sinless rom with elementalx kernel with cpu at 1.8 ghz and if i play need for speed for a couple hours and watch 1 or 2 movies drains really fast. the battery is the only thing i hate on this tablet, that and the fact that there's no sd card slot..
my nexus 7 also does not make much more, usually 7 hours screen time. it is often enough to look at a video on google play, and surf a little with wifi

Standby time is where the battery lasts for days, actual usage will dictate how often you need to charge. I usually only charge every 4-6 days with about 7 hours screen time. Naturally if you use the tablet several hours worth a day you will have to charge more frequently. The battery is perfectly acceptable, better than the 2012 N7 even though it's smaller.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda premium
The 2013 nexus 7 has an incredibly bright screen.... when turned down, it uses very little power, but if you turn it up all the way, it will drain battery like mad. What are you keeping your screen level at? If you keep it in the middle like you say, maybe turn it down a bit. The middle is like max brightness on other devices.... so watch your brightness and you will net much better battery life... also disable any sync/ wifi/bluetooth if you arent currently using them. that will help.
I flashed back to 4.3 to get good battery life again but I did that mainly cause 4.4 and up gave me touch screen issues I didn't have with 4.3

Follow the steps below.
1. Apps like Facebook, Instagram, Mail apps drain more battery even though if you are not using it. So configure them to sync occasionally at 3 hours or more to save your battery. You can also manually turn off sync in the Quick settings & turn On only when you need it.
2. Use apps like Greenify to limit apps like Facebook, Netflix to running on the background.
3. Set your brightness to auto. If you wanna configure your brightness more, use Lux Auto brightness app.
4. Install the following apps to monitor your battery like Battery Stats Plus, Cpu spy, Battery widget & note the values.
5.Also give a few days to analyse battery behaviour & reply if you found changes in the battery.
Nexus 7 (2013) with stock AOSP ROM(4.4.2), FRANCO Kernel (r12)
So it has happened a couple times where the tablet says it has 28% or so and then my daughter uses it and in about 5 min the battery is dead. Has this ever happened to anyone, is it from being uncharged for a while and by that I mean I haven't charged it for about 3 days? Its not to big of a deal just weird.

I've had that problem, particularly when using what I assume are labor-intensive apps (Skype, Candy Crush, The Room). It really bugs me, since the tablet ought to be able to handle these without significant drain. But I'll see my battery go from 40% to 5% in a matter of minutes.

Ya it only happens for me when the battery is getting lower at around 40-35% then sometimes it just drops stupid fast. Also I'm not rooted it's a stock tab

I have the exact same thing. From about 30 - 35% it drops in a matter of minutes until empty.
Did anyone figure out yet what causes this? And is there a solution to it? I also sometimes have issues to power on the device. When pressing the power button it doesn't respond. I had this a few times now, after pressing the button for about 10-15 seconds it finally switches on... Anyone else had this issue too?
Yes im having the same problem. As im viewing this post, ive lost about 3% battery. Last time i buy a samsung tablet. They dont optimize or update to patch their mistakes. Horrible.

I had the exact same problem......
And the solution is.....
FORGET ABOUT IT... I know that it turns u crazy and makes u just watching the battery percentage waiting for it to drop....so annoying
But what I decided to do is just forgetting about it and use it normally and dont let the battery percentage go too low and by time and charging and draining the battery over a month or so it became perfect!! It even gets charged in less time (about 4 hrs)
agree
This has now happened to me twice. Id be hovering at 35% ish, and in 20 mins of video watching im down to 16%. Something is amiss
I never had this problem until i recently Rooted the device and installed Clean ROM. Im thinking i should go back to stock firmware with Root and see if this still occurs. Worrying
If people let the battrey drop to 5% then switch off the device. Then put it back on and then connect charger and charge to 100% in one go without using until it tells you to unplug....see if that works.
Obvs dont always do this....this is just to try to calibrate battery. Under normal conditions you shouldnt let the battery drop below 30% before charging anyway to protect the battery from severe degredation.

Had the same issue with mine, sent it to Samsung for what I thought was going to be a battery replacement. They just flashed a new firmware on it and that fixed it. They also put 2-3 scratches on my flawless screen. Idiots.
However, overall, battery life SUCKS on this tablet. It's way worse than the older 10.1 which I am using now because I can't get rid of Samsung's API locked sPen gestures on the 2014.

I get just over an hour per 10% drop, pretty happy with that tbh.

The problem might lie in the usage of a certain app... dolphin browser for example... enable flash on it and your tablet drops 10 percent a minute or more ... you should look if the tablet is draining also by doing nothing by just having the screen on.... there is also the possability of having a bad external sd card that causes android to loop media scanning nonstop....
Im rocking android for some time now on multiple devices... and it was always some rouge app which caused this ... causing wakelocks and stuff... you can look for whats draining battery with wakelock battery monitor... or better battery stats... try to keep android as clean as possible ... some apps just drain like hell.... even facebook ... because of background services
