SGSIII Heat & Battery Issues? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Background: Rooted, stock rom.
- Just bought the phone on Saturday, charged it fully and played around with it on Sunday literally just moderate texting, making short calls, and taking a couple of pictures and the battery pretty much dies by 2 PM. Will the battery life improve over time?
This is with the settings tweaked to maximum battery conservation (15% screen brightness, NFC/S Beam off, No motion controls, battery savings on, the works.)
- Also, in that time the phone seemed to be fairly hot, I cannot recall the temperature, but it was hot to the touch. And when I tried downloading the OTA update from T-mobile, the bottom half of the phone (everything below the battery) became drastically hot. But the battery remained relatively cool. Is this something I should worry about?
I'd just like to know so I can exchange the phone while I still can.

I just got mine on Friday and I noticed the same issue. It seems to get hot whenever its doing something data intensive live streaming a youtube vid or downloading a app.

Thanks for the response.
I used it for about 15 minutes this morning reading a web page on Chrome and it seemed to get warm.
Also streamed HD YouTube as well as Spotify for about 15 minutes and it's still warm.
The thing is, these are the first really data-intensive things that I have done so far.
I'm going to go through a whole day just to see what happens.
Forgot to add that I even reduced my CPU through SetCPU to 1.2Ghz the since I rooted it
It's at 87% after 2h 20m 46s on battery.
With only 42m 23s of screen time.

It should calm down after a couple of charge cycles. For battery. Also make sure auto brightness, auto sync is off, gps, motIon control, voIce cmd, etc.
I dont use the battery saving feature and get great life. But I remember a few times it getting hot after a fresh flash but it always calmed down for me. Getting warm is normal, especially if on the charger while using.
Theres a lot of features I like but dont use much so for me its worth the few extra seconds to turn it on/off.

I am having the same issues. I got acwhite one last week and it is constantly hot near the home button. I am probably gonna revert to stock and return for another. My s2 did not do this.

Update
So I have completed my school day.
11h 25m 45s on battery
Battery percentage is at 57%.
I barely used the phone however.
Sent about 10 texts, went on Chrome and searched the web for about 15 minutes, took 8 pictures, instagram for 3 minutes.
Also kept getting e-mails (probably like 10 of them)
I turned on Power Saving mode as well.
Screen is the highest with 1h 32m 24s using 38% on my battery.
Would this be normal on the stock T-mobile rom with no updates?
I've never had an Android phone before so I wouldn't know.
But after researching, some people managed to be at around 70% usage by the end of the day. While doing more intensive tasks.

It's probably the service when you're inside buildings. If it's bad service it'll drain your battery.. if it's constantly trying to connect 4g you're going to have a short time *insert ski instructor meme*

You should check to see what's consuming CPU... (long press the home button, and go into the task manager...) should see something consuming cpu...
(when my phone's warm, it's generally because something's gone psycho on cpu use...)

At home, I literally get 0-2 bars. But at school I can consistently get anywhere from 1-4 bars.
This could possibly be it, but I am not too sure how much my signal fluctuates throughout the school.

I had given my local T-mobile store a call and they said that smartphones should be regularly heating.
It's strange to me how I can do a task a simple as texting and it heats up though.
How long did you have the borked S3 for?

I 2nd the bad carrier coverage notion. Just as a test, I put my phone into airplane mode while watching a video. I watched the same video while out of airplane mode. The battery drained faster while on the carrier's network than not. I noticed the signal meter was at 3 bars before I played the video.

Better Through Time
I decided to instal CM10 on my phone and it really did help.
I just got home from school/finished most of my day and here's the update:
63% left
9h 45m 29s on battery
1h 21m 33s screen on time
This makes me feel so much better considering that I actually used the device more today than ever before.
(HD YouTube videos, streamed Spotify, lots of internet browsing, more calls/texts.)
Even with the added usage CM10 seemed to have improved my battery life by a lot!
Not sure if I can totally attribute it to CM10 or just more charge cycles, but everything seems to be working better for me.
Thanks for all of the help!
The phone still runs hot sometimes but it has decreased over the last couple of days.

I have noticed on my phone that since installing Liquid Smooth rom has resulted in much better battery life than on the stock rom. However, ever since I have owned the phone, if i have the screen on for more than 10 minutes or so the screen gets really warm right above the home button. Anybody else experiencing this?

Same problem. I just assume that's where the processor is? It doesn't bother me. Its quite funny because the top of my screen is cold. And it doesn't get hot when I'm using it for browsing, texting, the usual. Not unless I play a game.

I'm assuming that Samsung's stock TouchWiz isn't as optimized as the ROMs that the devs make on here.
Which is a definite plus to having a device that has a strong community of developers behind it.
That happens to me as well. I have kind of gotten used to it. Just slip on a case so when you hold it your hand doesn't get sweaty and you should be fine. I would assume that's where the processor lives, but I am not too certain.

Never understood some people's philosophy on extending battery life.

I've read a lot of posts complaining about battery life, and other posts about users suggesting ways to improve battery life. I've read stuff like, disable LED, haptic feedback, lower volume, lower brightness, LTE turned off, underclocking, turning off sync, live wallpapers, etc, etc. To me a lot of people are crippling their phones. If your battery can last you 10 hours, that's enough because you'll probably be somewhere you can plug in. What's the point of being able to go for 20 hours when you'll probably have the opportunity to charge it before then? It's better to have and enjoy all the features.
Maybe somebody can chime in and give me their point of view.

I agree. I would never want to sacrifice a feature just to extend the phone's battery life. Instead I use a custom rom that has all the features (and more) and 12 to 18 hours of battery life.

Part of the issue is a sociological thinking pattern between wanting "more" and needing it. Depending upon the type of lifestyle you live, sometimes, battery life is of dire importance to have if you're constantly migrating around. But I agree, some people who aren't in that sort of disposition go overboard with it.
I just bought a bigger battery :good:
I agree wholeheartedly. If your battery is lasting you through your day (which mine does, and more) then why try to conserve it?
Yea its funny stuff people complain their battery only lasts 20 hrs but yet they want it to be able to do everything a computer can do and more....
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium
The only conscious effort i made to extend my battery life was to undervolt the CPU a bit, but this was more for the lower temperature advantages with extra battery life being an added bonus. Beyond that i turned off things i dont use like BT, no need having something running that i have no use for. Overall i was happy with the stock battery except for any kind of heavy video or game usage which drains it pretty quick - solution : bigger F'n battery :highfive:
i agree that some people seem a bit obsessive about it. but we shouldn give bad battery life a pass either. hopefully we will see some sort of advancement in batteries to have better battery life while keeping them at a decent size.
i was kinda worried id have horrible battery life with the S3 being that its LTE. my last LTE phone was so bad it would die after 8 hours idle.

I keep the brightness to the lowest setting anyway, but I do all of this because I go to school fairly far from my home, and I'd like to be able to play games on my phone without wasting 5% battery every 15 minutes. I haven't switched power saving off since I bought the phone.

I bought the extended battery because I like playing games from time to time and I don't want tl have to worry about my phone dropping 15% after playing something for 5 minutes. Like someone else said earlier. It really depends on the kind of lifestyle you live. I for one don't mind having the extended battery on my phone but I do miss how light it used to be.

How heavy is it? Does it fit in a case?
For me, and I want as much battery life as possible to avoid those situations where there is no way to charge you phone even if that only happens 1 a month or less.. As a parent I can't just let my phone die on me... I always need enough to be able to take or make that important calls/text. My goal is to have at least 20-30 hours of battery life per charge.
I think the only major feature I've given up is live wall paper. Other then that, it is just disabling other unused apps like gtalk, talkback, Google bookmarked sync. As well I've uv my phone as much as I can and run a 1350 max clock speed. I really don't see any major dip in performance as long as you do it right . I do use Tasker to disable syncing globally when the screen is off and make sure it automatically disable bluetooth after 10 mins once it disconnect. Also I have the Y5 app to automatically toggle wifi based off my network location. The most useful battery saver I've found is to set my wifi to only connect when the screen is on. Seems kind of backwards but it works well when very little data is process during idle rather the the phone requiring to keep a constant connection to wifi.

I'm also one of those people that closes an app as soon as I'm done with it. Use an app, press the home button, release and hold home, swipe the app away, sigh in relief. An old habit carried from my S2 Skyrocket, where getting 8 hours on stock was above average.

I have my screen brightness at 40-50 auto off.. i cant imagine turning it all the way down like alot of people say.. even when auto brightness is on it look very dull and dark at night to me.. Same thing for my tv with auto brightness.. but i still get good battery life. I am fully charged at about 6pm i use it till bedtime and use it for my alarm.. get up 4 am and when i get home at 2pm its still over 40%.. only thing i do is close all my running apps by holding home button a few times a day and same with ram
I work in an office so it's plugged in for the 2 hours before I leave so I have everything on full most of the day (brightness, lte...). Also, by undervolting I'm getting 30% more battery.
I think tips on increasing battery life like turning off lte and brightness are for people who can't plug in throughout the day or for emergency situations when you want to get the most out of your phone because there's some reason you can't charge.

I get anywhere from 12 - 23 hours depending on whether I'm at work or off. I can live with that...but there are situations where being unreachable poses a problem.
So, to deal with my phone addiction, I got an original replacement battery. Always have it charged and on me. When the phone shuts down, pop in the replacement and your done. About a minute without a phone. This way I don't have to UV, worry about brightness, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc...
I can't deal with the bulk of an extended battery.

30% more battery by simply undervolting? I think that's quite an overstretched statement. How is that even possible?

Its not possible. Not by solely UVing. The sole purpose of undervolting is so that your phone dosent overheat when running high clock speeds. Saving battery is just a perk. You might save a few percent with the undervolt but nowhere around 30%. But don't take my word for it.....

DISGUSTING battery life

Alright first of all, i want start off by saying that i LOVE this phone, both in terms of hardware and software, however, theres is a HUGE problem that i just can't get through and its the battery of this phone...
It is simply unbearable.
I have posted the screenshots. This screenshot is taken after 1 whole night of charging. In 5 hours or so time, I've use the music app for about 1 hour, talked on the phone for about 5-10min and sent about 10 text messages. I didn't do any web browsing/videos/gaming. I have also disabled LTE and turned my brightness to minimum with eco mode on. These small things drained my battery from 100% to less than 10% within 5 hours which i find to be completely unacceptable.
Last night, with me browsing the web on the bus for about an hour or so, it drained my battery from 85% to 3% by the time i got home...
I've looked at the battery life thread and it seems like im the only one experiencing this issue. Also not only does it drain SUPER fast, it takes a good 4 to 5 hours to recharge this thing. Which means it takes longer to charge than to use up even with minimal use...
Do I have a faulty phone and should I get it replaced???
Something's amiss. The only time that I've gotten less than 10 hours, is when I had my work email connection set up to "always connected" and wifi was turned on. Even then, I got 9+ hours of battery life.
Disabling lte is part of the problem. When the phone is in 3g, it uses fast dormancy which LG did not implement very well and it runs the CPU constantly. I encourage you to contact LG and your carrier and complain. don't let them tell you about background data or applications running the battery down. With the same apps running, this does not happen on lte. This can easily be verified by enabling debugging and then capturing a logcat from adb with lte both enabled and disabled. It will show fast dormancy trying to set network states every second. I spent a lot of time trying to get this issue recognized, but they kept saying that it had not been reported and was not a known issue. Let's make it a known issue so they will fix it.
How about actually showing us what you used instead of screen shots of %.... would be helpful...

Yeah, I've been quite impressed with my battery life on this thing. I made it from 6:30am spent about 2 hours tweaking it and setting it up, then messed around with it through the day. By supper time I plugged it in and it was at 63%.
I don't have the phone, but right off the bat i'd say it was whatever was causing your mediaserver to go nuts. Either some media app, YouTube, gallery etc, wouldn't say its a faulty unit, just mediaserver gone rogue

Well, a little update to this thread, i've disabled every different kind of syncing possible and i've been able to pretty much double my battery life from before, which is a lot better but i still wouldn't consider this to be good battery life.
I've been reading many posts regarding battery life, and it seems like there is some issue within the software that prevents the phone from going into deep sleep which is causing the lack luster battery life. This issue is on both the optimus g and the nexus 4, so i hope the devs may look into this issue when they are building custom roms for these two devices!

You definitely seem to have some weird issue's. My Optimus is great for battery life. My previous phone was an Xperia Arc and this has significantly better battery life without even running it in "eco mode". The only time I have noticed less then stellar battery life was when I had some app's running in the back ground that would keep refreshing/updating which kill's the battery.
Androids usage readings are inaccurate. Please consult this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
From what the picture shows I would guess its your 4G connection. A Hardware fault is improbable. And forget these things like "eco mode". Even if they underclock your cpu it won't give you a real benefit,
I've had great battery life on mine. Even when I've been geeking out on the device for several hours during the day.
Perhaps you are on the cusp of LTE coverage? If so, then the radio can kill your battery while looking for a signal.

I also have amazing battery life IMO, coming from a Galaxy S. I have no LTE in this area so am using only HSPA. Using the phone with casual use, I can easily go a full 24 hours on a charge. With very very heavy use I can go from 8 am till around 11 PM. I am very happy with the battery life overall. I'm running on "eco mode" FWIW.

[Q] Initial charge?

I hate to be the guy that asks this, but I just want to make sure as from what I understand this is different from phone to phone. From what I understand, Li-Ion batteries, like the GN2's, do not have a memory effect of any kind? And thus all battery calibration rituals and nonsense are entirely pointless for this handset?
The reason I ask is because I wasn't able to charge the device to 100% before use like I was always told to do with new phones. My device was turned on and used until it drained to around 10% at which point it was charged to 100%.
Now, after 2 weeks of use, I feel that my battery is not as good as it should be. I'm barely able to get more that 12 hours. I'd be happy to post some battery graphs in the morning.
One last thing, if I did mess up my battery, or if my battery is messed up or less functional than it should be, would buying a new battery fix all my problems?
Youvare right. All that calibration stuff is nonsense.
I have never charged my phone to full before using and draining the battery and my phone still lasts all day on mostly heavy use.
Could you post your batt stats?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Today I ran my phone with the "lowest" possible settings, that is lowest brightness, CPU power saving, and no haptic feedback. I did not turn off wifi. Doing this I was able to get a surprising 16 hours, although you can see from the graph that I didn't use my phone as much. Attached I have a screenshot of what it's like with the highest possible settings (no power saving stuff, and brightness all the way up, but no GPS). Sorry I don't have a pic of the percentages for the high settings, I never thought to do that.
What concerns me the most is this: even with the lowest settings, I'm only getting 2 hours screen time. (last pic)
What's interesting is that you would think that if I'm getting such poor screen time, there would be something else using a lot of battery, but there isn't. This led me to believe the problem was with the battery. I discovered a pretty big scratch on my screen the other day, and I have some monthly insurance plan from best buy, so I was thinking of just getting a new one. The longer I wait to get a new one, the harder it will be to set up everything again. lol
I noticed that compared to other GN2s, mine seems to wake up a lot when the screen isn't on. The awake periods tend to correspond with drops in battery and also when I have a poor signal. Could this be caused by my phone trying to look for signal and using battery?
Yes poor signal that results in the phone searching for better 3g/2g will drain the batteey faster.
Can you try using it in airplane mode with wifi only for a day and see how that goes?
Also install Better Battery Stats and after a day or so of normal usage check your partial unlocks to see if a rogue app is preventing deep sleep and sucking your juice.

Yeah it us definitely your signal playing a role. Also you have a lot of wakelocks showing up
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Dude you have major wakelocks that eat up 80 % of your battery!
Go to application manager and remove all the apps you don't use.
K, I agree with my week signal using battery. I only have 75 apps on my phone and they're all pretty mainstream, no obscure apps. Right now im in school with 86% battery, I'm turning on airplane mode now. I have noticed however that when I clear my ram it closes like 50-60 processes each time. I am always closing my apps, but 50 seems extremely high. im gonna turn on airplane mode and see how that goes...
thanks!
Yes, you do have poor signal but that's not all. You have terrible wakelocks pal. Install BBS and monitor which apps are the culprit. It's not about 75 apps, even 2 or 3 bad apps, which have hidden advertisement going on could suck your battery flat in no time.
So first thing, install BBS. 2h screen on time is horrible!
Btw- If you're on 3G, try to switch to 2G. Difference will be unthinkable.
Sent from my GT-N7100
Thanks everyone! I'm really loaded with school work, so I don't have a lot of time right now. But long story short, airplane mode saves my battery like crazy. I started school with 86%, turned on airplane mode, and I'm at 79% right now! more later

Mine's absolutely horrid, I can't for the life of me figure out what the hell's wrong with it. I'll run out of battery after about 12 hours, with the screen time at 1 hour and maybe 30 minutes if I'm lucky? The phone drinks away my battery in standby mode like a former alcoholic united with an opened beer. When I was on ICS, turning off 4G every time the screen was off with the AutomateIt app would give me excellent battery life. Ever since Jelly Bean, it doesn't seem to make a difference. I just don't even bother using AutomateIt anymore, I even uninstalled it. Useless. I check marked the option, "Restrict Background Data," but I actually had worse results with that on even. Following the thread about the Guide to good battery life, I turned off auto-sync. The only thing that seems to do for me is not get my emails in real time. No effect on the battery though. I'm guessing the battery drain has something to do with being on data (even though turning it off doesn't seem to do much) because everytime I go to school where there's little WiFi, battery's worse. Also, somehow my Messaging app takes up more battery than the screen. What's with that? I'll text every now and then, but it shouldn't eat away my battery like a fat man with the last batch of Twinkies. Enough with the dumb similes, haha, but I actually need help with this. I really don't wanna buy a battery off eBay cause the damn people are too lazy to send you the battery until a month passes, and I hate charging in the middle of the day.
I'm on 100% stock. I used to root and mess around with a ton of ROMs, but then I realized all my favourite ROMs were the ones closest to stock...
.... look at the eBay expected arrival and/or look for a seller in the USA ?
Anyway, that bit aside - have you installed something like BetterBatteryStats to be able to see what the problem is so you can fix it ?

It's exactly like mine. However, some users actually got theirs up to 5 hours screen time. How? I'll never know

5 hours... how !?
Easy !
I'm on stock and if I'm almost all the day on WIFI, not playing too much games, and with auto-brightness,
I can get 5 to 6 hours screen time.
(but on 4G all the day, it's more around 3 hours screen time)
This is what most people get with normal use around 14 to 16 hours and 4 to 5 hours screen time. I think the biggest issue is that 4G radio that most people have on all the time. I I have wifi everywhere so most of the time I have mine off that helps a ton. Plus all the sync stuff off, I get about 6 hours over 17 hours battery life and about 30 to 40% brightness.

14-16 is what was normal for me when I first got my GS3 (after JB update). If you want more battery life, I recommend trying juice defender (custom settings for data off while locked). If you have stretches where you don't use your phone it works really well. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Just sharing battery life for today.

This is my battery with light gaming and slight use with data on, with a lot of texting.
90% of the time my data is off.

Lucky you! I've been working on tweaks to my stock rooted system to get past 7 hours with data on. I'm going to test tomorrow or Monday.
Looks almost exactly like mine.
Man what are you guys doing? Here is mine over the past few days.
Mind you this is about 15-30 of minecraft and Epic Pirate Story during lunch. Full data and sync on with 4G/3G but mostly WiFi. About 30-40 min of web browsing. Tons of google talk and feedly news reader. Tons of pictures and about 5 min of video taken for each of those days.
Only mod to the phone is the camera mod.
pictures may be out of order but I think you get the just of it.
it all comes down to screen on time. less than 4 hours of screen time between charges is not very good.
Seeing a little over 4 hours of screen on time while using the AOSP roms.

I already hit a 5h 15m mark once letting the kiddos watch a movie off the internal and then Netflix. The movie was hour and forty and Netflix took it down the rest of the way streaming on 4G.
on average I get roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours in each charge which I'm fine with considering I could barely hit 8 hours before a dead battery with 2 hours screen on with my old Epic 4G Touch.
I'm sure I could get 4 hours screen on time if my phone wasn't the on sprints horrible network. I'm constantly searching for a data signal in Arizona. I do usually get just over 3 hours screen on and about 18-21 hours total between charges.

I ALWAYS have my data off during the day and I never really connect to WiFi.
I don't need my data on for the day. XD.
Edit: when I go back to school Monday, I'll screenshot my screen on time and battery life length.

Im getting almost 2 days with light usage. Data is off when I am out and bout. Wifi on the whole time I am home. Screen brightness at 30 for most of the day. Full stock rom on its 4th recharge.

I never see such battery life EVER.
I unplugged my phone at 100% at 4 AM once, woke up at 8, it was down to 75%. Wifi and sync were on..

Sounds like you have an app in the background doing something. Even my Epic 4G Touch wasn't that bad. Maybe a weak WiFi and or cell signal causing the battery to drain faster.
An update was this weekend.
Unplugged phone at 908am saturday morning. Plugged it in Sunday night at 1145 with 5% battery.
during the weekend I played Epic Pirate story for 25 min. Shot 150+pictures. Shot about 18 min of video. Wifi coverage was 50% of that at home and the rest was 3G/4G. Oh and streamed two episodes of revolution VIA FTP from my home Android server on 4G. Other than that I cruised the web and used feedly for news feeds.
At work I generally drop 3% in an hour and half without touching the phone with 50% cell signal and corp WiFi at 25% signal strength. At home I have an Airave and pull from WiFi(I have to access points in the house for solid coverage so signal never drops below 50%) and I drop around 1% per hour. Signal really matters when it comes to battery life.
I believe my screen on was around 3h40m.
So all in all I am impressed and love this phone!! Just wish the camera wasn't so crappy.
im at 7.5 hours with 66% left.
Light to moderate use including web browsing and about 15 min of angry birds star wars. Rooted Stock Rom with Loki's IA tweaks as my daily.
Sigh. 35 percent.

I went into settings and used the quad core control. I dont notice any difference in speed but i am also not a gamer. You guys that are having not so good battery life may want to try that and keep screen brightness below 40.

I tried that for two days in a row and didn't see any difference in battery life. Performance was untouched as well so I think that maybe it's already on and/or the app is broken.

Yep that is about what I get with screen on less than 2 hours.
So yesterday I played Epic Pirate story with 50% brightness for 45 min and dropped 25% in battery. Then about 10 min after I stopped playing my battery jumped up 7% LOL. I am seeing this a lot with this phone as it seems that the way the battery is read throws lower % than what is actually there. Odd thing...

It does the exact same thing to me.
Or when I barely use my phone for an hour, then start texting it drops about 3-5%

For me I don't see any real drop when texting or anything like that it's only when I run a game or something that really pushes the phone. When I stop playing I'll be at say 50% and then when I look at my phone 10-15 min later it's up to 55-59%. It's like the app reading and watching the battery miss reads it during an intense usage period.
Here's me.
Unrooted.
seems like battery dies sooo fast when listening music.
