[Q] Simultaneous Wireless (Qi) Charging and OTG? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Has anyone got both Wireless (Qi) Charging and OTG working at the same time with any combination of ROM/Kernal etc? I've tried all the settings on ElementalX but like others reported, it seems to be one or the other.
Thanks
Nathan
note: OTG + Power is fine, but I'd prefer to use my wireless dock with a DAC as I get ground loop feedback using the same power source

I haven't been able to... idk if it was from me transferring the daughterboard from an older one previously, but I tried!

Great question! I just ordered a DAC for my Nexus 7 (2013). I'm running Lollipop. I have my tablet installed in my car and have been using Bluetooth audio to my DSP, but am upgrading to a DAC for better sound quality via optical output.
While we continue searching for a wireless charging solution, which Lollipop kernels work for USB charging and DAC at the same time? Thanks!

I have not problem with using the ElementalX kernel and USB charging + DAC but... the killer I've found is is your amp is also on the same DC circuit you end up getting a ground loop distortion, which is why I was hopping for a Wireless Charging as it may help with isolation.

Hey bud, can you link me to the Elemental Kernel? How do you connect your cables to get DAC via OTG while also charging the tablet? Thanks so much for your help!

Did you ever figure out if you can simultaneously wireless charger with OTG connected to DAC?
I really want to do this.
Tried Elementalx with CM 11 12 and 13, but none seem to do this?

Hi,
I am planning to purchase a usb dac/amp if the USB Audio is confirmed to work for HOX with CM10/ some specific kernel. I failed to make the HOX acting as USB HOST without a external powered usb hub. But since it s said to be a feature of android 4.1, I wonder if anyone here have done that successfully? (ie. HOX ->USB OTG cable -> USB DAC/AMP -> speaker/ headphone)

I haven't try but I plan to. What I have found is that Android 3 is the first version supporting USB host, but not all the kernel are built to support it (although I guess with CM you'r fine). Then there's the problem of the cable, but I guess that can be solved with few extra bucks.
That's actually a pretty new idea for an old project I have my mind! It would allow me to skip one of the most complicated part of my project: battery-powered amp with charge regulator etc. I found out that addressing this problem (power) would be much more expensive than I thought. If I can use USB host, the phone's/tablet's battery would power the amp and DAC and would not need an additional power source, not to mention the fact that device would stop working when the battery is too low, instead of dying slowly with an undervolted current.
The DAC part is not essential for me, but nice to have. The AMP part definitely yes!

What USB DAC and how to use it in north-american S3?

I'm considering upgrading from my Galaxy S (with voodoo sound and wolfson chip) to Galaxy S3. I'm on Bell. I understand that north-american version does not have wolfson chip and audio is worse than original S with voodoo. I use it for relatively high-quality aftermarket car audio using analog out to audio aux-in.
What are my options for S3? What's the cheapest usb dac I can use with north-american s3 and where to get it in Canada or US online?
Is there any guide about how to set it up?
Thanks!
Note: I reposted it to Q&A where it's more appropriate, but can't find how to delete it here...
it doesn't have the same sound chip???!!? what the hell.. deal breaker! is this true?

No wolfson chip for NA version hopefully we get Voodoo kernel soon. Until then, some people have had success using a Fiio e7 plugged into their S3 using USB OTG. As for how they did it, I have no clue.

I did some research on this. Apparently it's possible to plug in a whole bunch of USB OTG devices, including many USB DACs. However as USB port is occupied - they suck power from the phone and phone itself cannot be charged at the same time. There are cables that you can inject USB power but in Galaxy S3 case - only to devices, the phone itself switches to "give power" mode when working in USB ORG mode and does not accept charge over USB. This is a bummer, as there is no way it can hold a battery for long while playing music and working as GPS in a car.
There is a guy on another forum who mentioned that it's possible to force S3 to accept charge with change in kernel (that means it won't power other USB devices, but they can be powered via injected power), but this is beyond my ability. We need somebody who knows how to do this to either build an app, or do a kernel version (semaphore?) or both, that have this module disabled on demand.
Here's what he said:
" However, I was able to modify this kernel to make it accept a charge while in OTG host mode. A Y-cable is connecting my phone to a powered USB hub. The hub has a USB-to-Ethernet dongle, connected to a router. The hub is also powering the Gnex via the other end of the Y-cable. The phone can now, say, act as a WiFi access point (wired + 3G!) and it's battery level will never drop below 100% or 99%. One disadvantage: in a real on-the-go situation, this kernel will not anymore power slave devices. One could fix this by allowing the user to switch between OTG host mode charge-out (default) vs. OTG host mode charge-in."
" On the Galaxy Nexus, removing the complete body of method tuna_set_vbus_drive() in arch/arm/mach-omap2/board-tuna-connector.c will disable charging of OTG slave devices and will allow the OTG host itself to be charged. The battery icon will not be updated by this modification alone."
SUCCESS!!! I can confirm that this USB OTG cable (http://ebayitem.com/190710044655) DOES CHARGE MY GALAXY S3! I plugged in USB cardreader with SD card into the phone through this cable (it lit up and card is fully readable), then plugged USB cable end into PC and phone showed a charging icon! Moreover, after waiting for 5 min. with screen off (cardreader still glowing blue and working) battery has gone up from %72 to %75 (and while I was writing this, to 78%), so it is indeed charging! Yay! It probably won't get up in the car, where just phone alone is "not discharging" at best from the car adapter, but at least it should allow me to listen to music with quality DAC and use navigation without (or with minimal) discharging.
I have not tested it with USB DAC that I intend to use for my car (Behringer UCA222), because I have to go out and buy it. Hopefully it works. Anyway, this cable definitely works with simultaneously charging my north-american Samsung Galaxy S3 (from Bell Canada) while powering USB cardreader!
Somebody else has mentioned that another cable (http://ebayitem.com/120980364117) also worked in his Galaxy S2.

Sorry for double post, I posted it by mistake and can't delete the post. Button says "edit/delete" but there is no delete option, just edit...
I bought Behringer UCA222 USB DAC and tested it in my car with the USB OTG cable with power that I mentioned. It works great! And the phone is indicating a charge. Sometimes when first playing music after plugging the device it sounds like fast forward for a few seconds (I guess clock rate mismatch or something similar), but after the presumably clock is locked it plays perfectly fine.
There is a big list of working DACs in the official sound quality thread, along with a lot of other good information.
midirt,
I am working on a car setup like this and would like to ask a question. Somewhere I read that you had to plug microUSB into phone before plugging into DAC in order for it to work. Is this true for you? It would be a pain to have to unplug everything each time you get in car.

Usually I just plug entire setup into the phone and it works fine. Sometimes when I shut off the engine and start it up (there is power interruption) I have to re-plug the DAC.

Yes. Very good DAC, sounds great, and cheap. It's not perfect though: there is definitely a "dirty ground" noise when power is connected - it may not be its fault, I'm using a weird aux-in adapter and all other solutions I tried had the same problem, even phone itself, when connected to power supply. Disconnecting power supply there is no noise. It' not usually noticeable in the car, but it's there and I don't like it. If your car doesn't have noise when phone is connected directly to aux-in and plugged into power, this unit won't have that noise. I just wish they would separate ground or cleaned the power or did something to isolate noisy USB power, but it's too cheap to have that. Nor sure expensive ones can do this either. Ground-lifting transformer from ebay removes the noise, but also reduces quality so I'm not using it.
Another issue is sometimes in the beginning the sound just accelerated and is played fast-forward for a few seconds, then it catches up and plays normal. After that it works OK until restarted. Very weird and a bit annoying but not a deal killer.

OTG Hub with Simultaneous Power to Nexus 7

Hello,
As explained in title, I am looking for a 3-4 usb hub that supports otg and can charge the Nexus 7 at the same time at full voltage, without drain.
Any ideas? thanks

hi there, im crazy with this
i got a nexu 7 2013 wifi, as like you I use CM 13 with elementalx installed and otg and charge enable.
i use a Y cable, a hub cable too and any works.
if someone can explain or tell me why.....i need it for my car

Otg splitter and hub is so you can power your tablet and any devices that are connected to the hub .. Ex. Joycon , video grabber , dac ...ect
Timurs kernel is the most reliable but you have to donate to get it ... Elemental is free but sometimes has issues with otg/charge bugs upon wake
You need the ability to enable Fast Charging for the kernel.
Simple USB-OTG won't get you full charge speed.
I know Timur's kernel for 2012 model has a Fast Charge option that is probably also available on the 2013.
And ElementalX kernel *might* be getting that option soon too, if not already.

Swapped USB DAC, doesn't always work now

Hi all, nexus 7 2013 lte and WiFi model, 5.1.1 with timurs Kernal installed in my car.
I've got a board that has a 5v 3a power supply going to a otg y cable. Usb hub plugged into y cable and dac plugged into hub.
I've just swapped from a miniDSP MiniStreamer which is a usb to spdif coaxial sound card. This worked perfectly, I could unplug and replug the otg cable or turn power off whenever I wanted and it would always be recognized and be used by Android through Spotify, power amp etc.
I just changed my processor and it takes an optical spdif input so I changed the MiniStreamer to a hifimediy sabre u2 dac which also does optical spdif out.
I found to get the sabre u2 to work at all, I have to turn the tablet off, connect the dac and power to it, the turn the tablet on. This takes a while to do.
As soon as I either disconnect the otg cable or turn power to the dac off and back on or the tablet goes into its Fi sleep mode (when car is turned off) my tablet no longer uses it for audio but reverts back to tablet speakers.
In the power event manager it still shows the usb hub and the dac as being connected.
Would greatly appreciate any help, as it's my only source for audio in the car.
Apologies if it's in the wrong place, I've not spent much time on this forum so not sure where everything is.
Edit: do you think updating to Android 6.0 would solve this if it's just a finicky usb audio and Android 5 thing?

So I'm not sure why but a program called SoundAbout fixed this. I forced all media audio out to usb host and it seems to have done the trick.
I shouldn't need this since 5.1.1 and timurs Kernal together are supposed to make usb dac's hot pluggable but oh well, it's working now.

Hi Phahel, have you had any issues w/ static over any of your USB dac? I bought a couple of inexpensive units to try and both have static. I still have a bunch of things to try to isolate the issue (use dac on computer, use stock lineage kernel, try on another phone, etc), but I'm curious if there are any common issues that I'm just not aware of. I'm using Lineage 14.1 and ElementalX kernel (which enables OTG w/ charging). Thx!
Make sure you have quality charger and cable and that audio ground loop is not problem in your car (some Prius are known for this).
Also, I'm having problems with newer Android (7) and sound distortion. If you want to, try cm13, or stock Rom running on Android 6.

NO!
The DAC you have almot surely doesn't work with Android 6 and it's mono bug.
I find DACs can be touchy. sometimes mine wouldn't connect and I'd have to unplug, A couple times I had to reboot with the DAC connected. 98% of the time it works perfect.
Check all your wiring as already mentioned as you shouldn't need a software solution. Also check anything else USB you have connected. And when it doesn't work check PEM to see if it's recognized.

USB dac/amp combo

Anyone using a USB dac/amp on HTC 10? just got my fiio k1 today in the mail and I can't get it to work with any headphones. when I press play I can get noise from the headphones like it wants to play but nothing else comes out. I just have a USB c to female USB 3.0 cable to hook the k1 to USB c port on the 10. Would I need a hub that has its own power to be able to use this dac? Maybe the 10 isn't providing enough power?
Hi, I know this is an old thread but in case someone searches for this.
I was finally able to get USB DACs to work with my HTC 10. Answer is install an aosp ROM. Seems like the Dolby feature in sense ROMs might be giving an issue with USB DACs. As soon as I switch to lineageOS my dragonfly red worked. Also, smsl idea DAC.
