USB dac/amp combo - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Anyone using a USB dac/amp on HTC 10? just got my fiio k1 today in the mail and I can't get it to work with any headphones. when I press play I can get noise from the headphones like it wants to play but nothing else comes out. I just have a USB c to female USB 3.0 cable to hook the k1 to USB c port on the 10. Would I need a hub that has its own power to be able to use this dac? Maybe the 10 isn't providing enough power?

Hi, I know this is an old thread but in case someone searches for this.
I was finally able to get USB DACs to work with my HTC 10. Answer is install an aosp ROM. Seems like the Dolby feature in sense ROMs might be giving an issue with USB DACs. As soon as I switch to lineageOS my dragonfly red worked. Also, smsl idea DAC.

htc one x digital audio out? is this possible?

Hi, I'm wondering if it would be possible to connect the HTC one x with it's micro USB port to a coaxial input on an amplifier. This without the use of an AD converter.
I bought a wadia powerdac 151 mini and would love to do this.
If there is no possibility I would like to know if there is an other high end smartphone that could pull it off.
Ps I know there is a second component in the wadia line that has an iPhone connector, I just don't want that component nor do I want an iPhone
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Can think of some ways to do this but they are not at all elegant:
You can get digital output via HDMI by using an MHL adapter. Since your amp doesn't have HDMI inputs you would also need to get an HDMI to SPDIF converter like this http://www.amazon.com/HDmi-Audio-Converter-Convert-Video/dp/B0015DTUJ8 (there may be something similar with coaxial). There are other messy ways of doing this such as passing HDMI through a TV and back out of the TV via SPDIF - but you would need to keep the TV on to get audio.
Similarly, some of the above could be done with WiFi using the the HTC media link HD instead of an MHL adapter.
Alternatively, you could use Bluetooth lossless APT-X. However, the receivers I can find only output in analogue, which is not much use to you. And bluetooth is only good for streaming music - video would be out of sync.
Digital Audio Out via USB on HOX Jellybean confirmed working!
Hi Guy's n Gal's thought i'd make every HOX owners day by confirming that USB audio out is now fully working on the HOX!! :victory:
I purchased the Fiio E17 and recieved it today 04/01/13 my HOX is a Orange branded Tegra 3 phone which is running custom firmware (Android Revolution HD 18 Jellybean 4.1 Hboot 1.6)
I charged the Fiio E17 pluged it into the HOX with a USB OTG cable, plugged in headphones hit play on poweramp and to my huge delight and relief awsome sound was to be heard Eureka!!
So to everyone with and Android device capable of running Jellybean that wants Digital Audio out via USB It's a reality.
Enjoy and spread the word.

What cable did you use? MicroUSB to usb then usb to mini usb? Or microusb to spdif? Or straight micro usb to mini usb (e17). Thanks.

You first need a usb otg cable. It's micro usb male win a female usb on the other end. Then plug your jab sound device (like the fiio e17) into it and hey presto. I have used this with a cheap usb sound card and it works so i imagine you can find a usb device that supports the output you need.

Any one played with JellyBean and usb DAC/AMP?

Hi,
I am planning to purchase a usb dac/amp if the USB Audio is confirmed to work for HOX with CM10/ some specific kernel. I failed to make the HOX acting as USB HOST without a external powered usb hub. But since it s said to be a feature of android 4.1, I wonder if anyone here have done that successfully? (ie. HOX ->USB OTG cable -> USB DAC/AMP -> speaker/ headphone)
Regards,
Kenneth

I haven't try but I plan to. What I have found is that Android 3 is the first version supporting USB host, but not all the kernel are built to support it (although I guess with CM you'r fine). Then there's the problem of the cable, but I guess that can be solved with few extra bucks.
That's actually a pretty new idea for an old project I have my mind! It would allow me to skip one of the most complicated part of my project: battery-powered amp with charge regulator etc. I found out that addressing this problem (power) would be much more expensive than I thought. If I can use USB host, the phone's/tablet's battery would power the amp and DAC and would not need an additional power source, not to mention the fact that device would stop working when the battery is too low, instead of dying slowly with an undervolted current.
The DAC part is not essential for me, but nice to have. The AMP part definitely yes!

Help with Otg

Hello i installed a nexus 7 in my car not i really dont want to take out my center console because its a huge Pita. But i realise that i now need an otg. I was runninh sound via bluetooth to my radio but the lag os crazy. I have acces to the the end of my charging cable. I was wondering would adding a usb to usb adapter and a usb hub. Would that be consider a usb otg cable. Would i be able to purchase a usb dac and use it. Also could i charge at the same time. I have absolutely no room to fit a audio jack on my tablet. So usb dac is my only option.

You generally need a kernel installing to do as you have said eg elemental x or timurs. Yes, you can then use a usb otg cable to power and host the usb dac.

Swapped USB DAC, doesn't always work now

Hi all, nexus 7 2013 lte and WiFi model, 5.1.1 with timurs Kernal installed in my car.
I've got a board that has a 5v 3a power supply going to a otg y cable. Usb hub plugged into y cable and dac plugged into hub.
I've just swapped from a miniDSP MiniStreamer which is a usb to spdif coaxial sound card. This worked perfectly, I could unplug and replug the otg cable or turn power off whenever I wanted and it would always be recognized and be used by Android through Spotify, power amp etc.
I just changed my processor and it takes an optical spdif input so I changed the MiniStreamer to a hifimediy sabre u2 dac which also does optical spdif out.
I found to get the sabre u2 to work at all, I have to turn the tablet off, connect the dac and power to it, the turn the tablet on. This takes a while to do.
As soon as I either disconnect the otg cable or turn power to the dac off and back on or the tablet goes into its Fi sleep mode (when car is turned off) my tablet no longer uses it for audio but reverts back to tablet speakers.
In the power event manager it still shows the usb hub and the dac as being connected.
Would greatly appreciate any help, as it's my only source for audio in the car.
Apologies if it's in the wrong place, I've not spent much time on this forum so not sure where everything is.
Edit: do you think updating to Android 6.0 would solve this if it's just a finicky usb audio and Android 5 thing?
Sent from my D5833 using Tapatalk
So I'm not sure why but a program called SoundAbout fixed this. I forced all media audio out to usb host and it seems to have done the trick.
I shouldn't need this since 5.1.1 and timurs Kernal together are supposed to make usb dac's hot pluggable but oh well, it's working now.

Hi Phahel, have you had any issues w/ static over any of your USB dac? I bought a couple of inexpensive units to try and both have static. I still have a bunch of things to try to isolate the issue (use dac on computer, use stock lineage kernel, try on another phone, etc), but I'm curious if there are any common issues that I'm just not aware of. I'm using Lineage 14.1 and ElementalX kernel (which enables OTG w/ charging). Thx!
Make sure you have quality charger and cable and that audio ground loop is not problem in your car (some Prius are known for this).
Also, I'm having problems with newer Android (7) and sound distortion. If you want to, try cm13, or stock Rom running on Android 6.

NO!
The DAC you have almot surely doesn't work with Android 6 and it's mono bug.
I find DACs can be touchy. sometimes mine wouldn't connect and I'd have to unplug, A couple times I had to reboot with the DAC connected. 98% of the time it works perfect.
Check all your wiring as already mentioned as you shouldn't need a software solution. Also check anything else USB you have connected. And when it doesn't work check PEM to see if it's recognized.

USB OTG Poorly Supported

USB-C to USB-A OTG Cable -
Not able to power a simple external USB MSata Drive or External USB HDD - I plug these drives into a LG V10 or a Galaxy S8 and work perfectly fine. What gives? I have only able to get a flash drive to work.
Any known work a rounds? Anyone else try this?
Thanks,

I tried this just now and am shocked it doesn't work either.
I wonder if OTG power support was removed due to the decrease in battery size? Has anyone tried OTG "audio output", say through a device like the audioquest dragonfly, to see if that works??

I don't think so, since the notification that pops up when I connect 32 GB ADATA USB 3.0 flash drive -> USB 2.0 A female to micro-B male OTG cable -> micro-B female to USB-C male adapter -> Z2F says the Z2F is providing power to the connected device. The problem is you can't do anything else BUT that.

I'm wondering this myself. The fact that the Z2F outputs analog audio over USB-C leads to me to believe that it isn't fully USB-compliant.* Both the HTC U11 and Google Pixel 2 output digital audio, which, based on Google's crowing about USB-PD and the existence of devices like the dragonfly, appears to be the right way to do things (albeit with the tradeoff of more expensive audio peripherals, which much now have their own onboard decoding hardware.)
*Can anyone with knowledge of the USB spec comment on this?
BTW, I started a support thread about this at the official forum, where it's received several replies and suggestions from a mod. Kindly chime in there too so Lenovo can see this is a real issue they need to address.

So based on this Motorola mod post and the OP's statement that USB-C flash drives work, the Z2F and Z have the same (lack of? LOL) OTG functionality. The Moto Z subreddit has a pretty extensive thread about Moto Z DAC functionality; it appears the Dragonfly is supported, among others.

Interesting development: another Motorola Forms mod now says powered USB hubs are rumored to work. We're making progress, folks.
Okay fellas,
I so far have been able to get certain drives to work and others not! I have tried 2 different USB-C to USB-A cables and get the same results, 1st ones an HP cable and 2nds an Anker USB-C to USB 3.1 Adapter
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01COOQIKU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have been able to get a 256gb M2Sata Drive, 500gb WD Mypassport, and a 2TB Mypassport to read.
I also have a 256gb MSata Drive that will not power up or read without using a powered usb hub. However the Msata Drive will read without an added powered HUB. On the Samsung and LG Devices.
Only thing I can think of is that certain drives have higher amperage that the Moto Z2 simply cannot push through its USB-C Port.
Good to know it isn't just me experiencing broken USB OTG support.
I've got a PS3, PS4, and Xbox one controller I hook up with USB OTG. Normally it's as simple as plug n play and I'm good to go. However, that doesn't seem to be the case here. I can still pair the PS3/4 controllers in sixaxis just fine and get power to the PS3/4 and Xbox one controllers. And yes, that bit about supply power to device rather than transfer and you can't pick something else, happens to me too. Sometimes I can plug my thumb drive in and I can explore through the storage file explorer, but I usually have better luck with an app called X-Plore.
This one time I even had said thumb drive take out my entire OS to the point where I had to use that June ROM to reset me back to start. Spoiler alert: I kept getting "Android.process.acore keeps crashing" over and over; various other apps kept crashing as well.
On a side note if I can at least get PS3/4 controllers to work for a long time within say, sixaxis (or similar) I'd appreciate any tips. Otherwise I either gotta wait for this to be solved in a future upgrade, future sixaxis, or when we start getting custom ROMs..

This is excellent information, thanks a lot man.
So FYI I tried the Anker adapter @XE-Cherokee linked to and it worked perfectly. That seems to be the solution for now.

Appreciate the heads up, to confirm this adapter works perfect with my external drives, and as an added plus, also my external DAP/amps for audio playback.

The latest Neutron and USB Audio Player Pro will output bitperfect (non upsampled) audio perfectly to both my portable DAC/amp units.
USB Audio Player pro, has the benefit that you can stream tidal native, bitperfect if you have an acct. Which is awesome imo. Tidal still buffers SUPER slow on this device though. So I'd recommended only offline use (which you CANT do with USB audio player pro due to licensing)
I would also add that I get some scratchiness out of the stock USB C to 3.5mm dongle that came with the phone. I thought it was the port being "dirty",. but I have NO NOISE out of the USB audio output using the Anker otg cable. Maybe Anker makes a USB c to 3.5mm adapter.
One tip for getting USB powered OTG drives to work is to use as short a USB cable as possible. Like get a good quality 1ft USB cable. I used to have a similar problem with using an external drive on a Wii and found that a 1ft cable would allow me to use 2 different drives that otherwise would not work with a 6ft cable.
It worked!
I used a USB 2.0/type C adapter that cames with s8 and instead the original USB 3.0 cable, put another adapter, and transferred files with Total Commander.
On this subject but kinda off topic. How are you all getting your drives mounted? I cannot mount NTFS or fat32 drives. Only ext3/4 drives.

Yep, basically you created a 2 inch cable. LOL.
In essence, many USB powered hard drives approach the power limit of what the USB port can output. Power drops over the length of a USB cable, so longer cables may not provide sufficient power for the drive to function correctly. Better quality cables usually have less power drop, though it is not a guarantee.
Unfortunately most USB powered drives do not list their power requirements. The only way to really tell is to open the case for the USB drive and look at the hard drive inside it to find how many amps it draws. For the best compatibility you want the lowest amps.
I don't think that's otg power issue. I think it is locked by Moto becuase they want you to use their add-on devices. I have a wifi camera it doesn't work either, But it works in my all other phones

Just because an add-on device works for one USB OTG implementation doesn't mean that it works on all USB OTG implementations. There is an enumeration of what devices and types are accepted. I have tested USB OTG audio microphones, USB OTG audio speakers, USB OTG Headphones, USB OTG Ethernet, USB OTG Keyboards, USB OTG Flash drives and those device types work. If there is no device driver for the device attached then it would need to be supplied by an app. OTG power drain is definitely an issue and is mentioned in the OTG specifications.
That's what I tried to say. It is locked by Moto. They want you to use their add-on mod. I have tried extrenal usb c endoscope camera, wifi endoscope camera, lg wireleas projector, Samsung projector. None of them work with Moto. However, the same apps work in all other phones. It is clear to see, it is not all otg related all the time or driver which provided by app. It could be just locked by Moto, becuase they want use to use their mod add-on. People who rooted the phone was able to turn on those supports.
I use a Belkin OTG adapter, it worked but it was extremely picky. The Built in files app only picked up my HDD if it was either Fat32 or exfat. But the ES File Explorer app only picked up NTFS.
