How to change directory permissions

I want to replace some of the graphics used by HTC Home. When I try to store my new files in the /Windows directory with the same name as the existing files, the system tells me I don't have permissions to write over a read-only file.
I cannot disable the read-only flag, and I read this forum and all others in XDA-developers before giving up.
Can anyone tell me how to change permissions?
Thanks,
George

[Q] Default HTC_IME Missing

Hello,
I found today a version of the default htc_ime with included cyrillic(bulgarian) language in it and tried to install it. The guide said to replace the .apk file in /system/app. I did that, restarted the phone and now the Touch Input method is missing in the options and missing when i try to change the input method.
Before replacing the file I kept a copy of the original on the sdcard. When things went wrong i copied my original file back to /system/app and restarted, but the problem remains. Still I don't have the Touch Input (htc_ime) keyboard present.
What else could go wrong when copying that file, what else could have changed, and how can I restore it ?
Yes I know i should have done a nandroid backup before doing that, but just thought nothing can go wrong, silly me ..
Did you change the permissions via chmod to 640 / rw-r-r ?
If not this could be the Problem...
This could be the problem. The other files in /system/app as seen in root explorer have permissions rw-r--r--, but the file I have copied has ---rwxr-x. My original file also has these, so i guess they are changed when I copied it through adb shell. I will change them when I get home and post an update of the situation.
You should be able to change the permissions from within RootExplorer.
Yes it worked. I changed the permissions through root explorer. I have the default keyboard again. Thank you, you are a life saver.

Media Sounds

Good Morning
I would like to change my system sounds( ringtones;notifications;alarms and ui) from TW to some AOKP sounds. i've managed to extract the sounds from the rom and copy it to my sdcard. however when it cames to reproduce them or adding them in the sound settings it doesn't reproduce them. i can see that is a question of permissions, but when i try to change the permissions it doesn't allow me,and i'm using root explorer.. Any idea how i can solve this problem??
Thank's for any help and reading this
in the top border of root explorer, there is an option (mount R/ W)
just touch it
it will then change to mount R/O
then you can change the permissions now
Sent from my GT-I9300
don't forget to hit thanks if I helped you

[Q] [SOLVED] Cannot change permissions of files. PLZ Help

All posts I saw in search bar were over a year old and am not sure if they are relevant on 5.0
Problem: I cannot change permissions of files on my internal sd card.
Temporary solution: move file to /system/app, change permissions and then move file to wherever it needs to go.
If anyone knows of a more permanent solution please help.
EDIT- flashed a custom rom or ten and now I can change permissions all day. If you are on stock and have the issue I had than moving the file to change permissions works too. I like to change boot animations and changing permissions is a must.

Help? Editing build.prop without bootloop?

Editing build.prop without bootloop?
Whenever I change the screen dpi the system loops...
I tried changing to multi window in any application, loop again.
Someone to help?
What method are you using? There are apps like BuildProp Editor that keep things simple..
Alternatively, you can use ES File Explorer with its inbuilt editor.
You maybe getting boot loops depending on how you edit the build.prop which could affect the permissions.

I'm using the application x-plore and after editing the builp.prop I check that the permissions are correct, and when I restart loops.
permissions need to be set to 644 after editing.
Can anyone post a mini guide for build prop editor? I used it and ended up in a bootloop. How to set permission there? Can't find the option
@Satir0 @montusk
Download ES file explorer
Enable root in ES
Go to build.prop, tap the menu and select edit
Edit whatever you want to, after you're done just go back, it will ask you if you wanna save, select yes and you're done. No need to set permissions.

I will try later ...
But I was with Xplore G3 and never had any problems.
It will not be because my bootloader is locked?
Edit: thank you, changed the dpi using apk device control
