How to change directory permissions - P3300, MDA Compact III General

I want to replace some of the graphics used by HTC Home. When I try to store my new files in the /Windows directory with the same name as the existing files, the system tells me I don't have permissions to write over a read-only file.
I cannot disable the read-only flag, and I read this forum and all others in XDA-developers before giving up.
Can anyone tell me how to change permissions?
Thanks,
George

you simply press and hold the file until the options appear in the taskbar, then you can choose open with then you specify which program you are going to open and re-writing the file you mean

How to delete/modify a wm5/wm6 windows rom file ?

Hi guys,
I'd like to modify a file from the windows folder.
I tried with TotalCommander and as the file is on the ROM, it says unable to delete/replace file
Is there a way to modify or replace this file ? I heard about making a cab file to replace the file but some help would be great
Thanks for your help
There is no way to delete or modify these files.
What you can do is copy your own file with the same name over it. The copy will actually reside in your storage memory and the system will use it until deleted or until you hard reset.
Note that if you want to replace system files on WM 5 / 6 you will need to sign them.
I think it would be better if you tell us what exactly you are trying to do as there may be a simpler way or an existing solution.
It's solved I tried with another rom and it works, I can replace the file.

Need help extracting gwes

Hey all,
I am trying to change the wait symbol animation on my PPC, and have read up on it, but all the directions say I need to copy the gwes.exe.0409.mui from the windows folder, modify it, and overwrite the old one with the modified. Unfortunately, I can't even copy it out of the windows folder. Seems like no one can get it to work very well.

Does anyone know how I can copy and then overwrite the file?
Come on, I know someone here must know how to do this.
use a program like gsfinder+
Hey Sleuth,
I've tried using GSFinder+ and Resco File Explorer. On both programs, it will let me use the copy command, but when I try to paste it in another folder it says that the file cannot be copied. Any ideas?
Basically, I'm hoping there's an easier way to get at the file than dumping the whole ROM.
Same problem here, any ideas?

How do I overwrite a file "in ROM memory"?

There are a number of TP2 tweaks which require the editing or replacement of files - for example, there is supposedly a way of increasing the loudspeaker volume which involves replacing a file called AudioPara3.csv with an edited version. This file sits in the Windows folder.
I'm using Resco File Explorer on my TP2, with the corresponding shell extensions installed on my desktop Windows, but nothing I do will allow me to edit that file. Trying to overwrite it (by dragging the copy into the appropriate Explorer window on my desktop PC) fails, telling me that I don't have the necessary permissions. If I look at the file properties on my TP2, it's set to read-only. If I try clearing the read-only checkbox this looks as if it's going to work, but actually if I go back into properties again, it's still set to read-only. There's another (disabled) checkbox in the properties labeled "ROM" which is ticked - I assume it's this that is causing the problem.
I've also tried renaming the file - that, again, appears to work but what it actually does is to create a duplicate of the file with the new name while leaving the old file intact.
There must presumably be a way of overwriting this file, otherwise no one would have been able to install the tweak!
I have a similar problem with the weather database file - so I can't add in extra locations.
What am I missing?
Try doing it on the TP2 itself with Resco File Explorer. I do not have any problem so far. Not too sure when you use it on the desktop.

Several options in Resco File Explorer failed, but using the Copy To option worked, for some reason.
Don't think it actually made the speakers any louder, though.
You can also try Total Commander (not like it'll make the speakers louder, but for future reference).
Total Commander will work OR you can rename the original file, then copy the new one in.
I recommend (strongly!) the former since if you screw up you can fix it without a hard reset!
What is wrong with this file?
Hello,
I'd like to ask for some expert help.
I finally managed to edit an EXE file from Windows - just translating Japanese text to English. I used the MEditor suite. After saving, I "dropped" the file onto the SignCode.exe as per instructions.
When I transferred the file to its original location and overwrote the original one, I get:
"Cannot open... A critical component is either missing or cannot start because program memory is unavailable...."
I am sure I didn't change anything else but texts. So what could be wrong?
I am attaching the two files - the original and the edited - for someone to please look at them and let me know if there's anything I can do. This is Sharp's Barcode Reader.exe
Thanks!

Are you using a custom ROM or stock ROM?
For editing the registry, you could try using Total Commander.
Use Resco Explorer or Total Commander. Those programs are able to overwrite \Windows\ directory.

[Q] How To Make a .txt file?

I tried searching and didnt find what I was looking for
Can someone explain how to make a .txt file? I was wanting to modify my power widgets in MikFroyo and I am lost as to what program to use to make it. Thanks for the help
You can use any word processor, the easiest one is probably notepad or wordpad. When you save the file make sure to select .txt as the file type
If you mean on your phone, get es file explorer from the market. Then you just hit: menu new and name it with a .txt at the end of the file name
Ok, so I got how to make the .txt file but using ES file explorer it wont let me paste/move it into the system>customize directory... It just says "copy failed"...
Also, the permission set on the existing widget.txt file are set to read only so I cant just modify that one...
I got it to copy one time and upon reboot the phone stuck at the white HTC EVO screen.. had to android back to pre-messed up copied file...
Anybody already done this and know what I'm missing?
The reason it is not copying is because the system is mounted read only.you can try going into settings in es and go to root options at the bottom. Those options don't work on all roms but you can check it out and see. Mount as read write and then you should be able to copy to system

Alright, so I used the "experimental" feature to copy the .txt file into the system>customize directory and it actually worked, I have my power widgets the way I want them now..
But, I tried it again a little bit ago and ES file Exlp wouldnt let me use that feature... It kept saying that "mounting failed, this feature wont work on your phone."... Any idea what's up with that?
thanks for the help BTW
