Need advice for a hardware issue - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

My wife's note II had a failed USB port recently. After it failed and wouldn't charge the battery, I was trying several chargers and cords on it, and it actually started making a sizzling sound. I ordered a replacement board through a supplier located in china that drop ships from Flash Technology in Springfield, Mo. When I installed the replacement board, this corrected the bad USB port, and I was able to charge the battery and connect to the pc just fine. However, the microphone was completely non functional. She was unable to make phone calls or use voice recognition. I was unable to record voice. So I asked the company to ship me another part thinking that the part was faulty. After installing the replacement part the microphone still does not work.
I tried a normal wipe data/factory reset from recovery, but no change.
I don't know where to go next with trouble shooting this issue. It seems unlikely, but could both parts be faulty? The parts I received are both labeled SGH-I317 rev 0.7 Would my next step be to buy a part from another supplier?
Could the failing USB port have caused some other damage to the phone? As far as I can tell, all features of the phone work normally except for the microphone. I'm really at a loss how to proceed. I can't believe this phone is damaged beyond repair.

I'm surprised no one has (or at least is willing to post) any experience with this kind of thing.
I have solved the issue, and my wife is using the phone again. Since I didn't find any help here, I needed to look somewhere. First I tried calling Samsung technical support, but that was a no go. Next I called Mobile Tech Videos in Texas and spoke with Josh Groce, the owner. He was very gracious to speak with me, and was very helpful from his large amount of experience with these phones.
Based on our conversation, I was willing to try purchasing another USB ribbon cable from another supplier as the next troubleshooting step. I learned from Josh that a supplier I had found online was one he uses and trusts, so I ordered a part from E-Trade Supply.
It turns out that both the original part and the replacement part shipped to me by the original supplier were faulty. I put the new replacement part from E-Trade Supply into the phone, and it worked like a charm.
I have asked the supplier, eBay seller wholesaleblimited, to refund the price of the part, and they have said they will issue a call tag to get the two non-working parts back, and then refund my money. It wasn't a lot though. Only about $7.00, including shipping. The part from E-Trade Supply was about three times as much, with shipping.
I've known about Mobile Tech Videos for several years due to my participation mostly in the Galaxy S II form, but have never had occasion to contact him before. I can highly recommend him for any kind of hardware issue, based on both my present experience and things other people have said about him on the forums. Josh is active on XDADevelopers as @connexion2005.

Dead Phone RIP ?

Hi ,
My SGH-i927 was working quite happily sat on charge connected to a USB cable on my PC, I left work with the phone in my pocket and when I came to use it a couple of hours later it was completely unresponsive.
It will not respond to power button at all
It shows no activity when on charge either via wall wart or USB, it does not show up as connected to the PC when USB cable plugged in.
I've tried removing the battery for a couple of minutes and also a different battery with long and short presses of the Power Button whiles't holding volume with various combinations there of.
This is not as a result of my flashing anything it just stopped, the threads I've seen using search all seem to be able to get to a boot screen of some description mine is completely dead.
Phone was Unlocked / rooted / backed up + efs backup / running 4.0.4 UCLJ3 Lite Kernel
Anyone have a suggestion on how I might be able to resurrect it or should I put it in a long ship and set fire to it ?
Please note I imported this Phone into the UK
I approached a local SAMSUNG service center and they won't touch it as it's from outside the EU. - Further more on discussing the nature of the problem I was informed it's probably a hardware fault due to IC or Fuse or combination of them. As these are surface mounted components they wouldn't be repairable by normal means and they wouldn't even give me a number for an independent phone repair.
Can anyone know of and can give me the contact details of a repair person based in the UK who'd be willing to look at it ?

Thankyou,
I appreciate the time taken to respond and especially the offer, however although not completely inept with a soldering iron changing the motherboard may well be beyond my expertise, but I'd be willing to give it a go if all else fails.
I have managed to locate another repair center reportedly having Samsung Qualified technicians. Initial communications seemed to suggest they could deal with the assessment which they provide for free. I have sent the handset to them and am now awaiting their report.
If things do not work out with the repair center, I would like to contact you to discuss your offer further.
Regards
Response from repair center - beyond economical repair - but no further detail.
I think I'll call it quits now and just invest in a new handset.

I might be willing to part with my own for a reasonable price too, but it wouldn't be less than $100. Has an extended battery. Probably better to get a brand new one.

Story of my S3's Broken Power Button

Copying from my post on reddit, need to vent this out.
I woke up after a nap one day and noticed that my S3 was turned off. I turned it back on and went back to sleep, but woke again to notice that it still wasn't on. I tried going into recovery and doing a factory reset, but it had trouble turning on. When I finally was able to, and get it to turn on, it'd turn off again. After a bunch of troubleshooting, I realized that the power button was faulty, and wasn't physically stuck, but sometimes acted as if it was depressed. After a few taps with a pen, it sort of got better. Now, the button was just very sensitive. Just a light touch on the power button would translate into a press, but still sometimes stayed in a non-physical depressed state.
And here's where I made my mistake:
I opened the phone to look at the power button.
I sent it in for repair because it was still covered under warranty, and when talking to a representative to request a repair, they told me
We will bring the handset in for evaluation, and the repair technician will determine if the cause of damage is due to defect or an external source. If a defect is found due to external source, you will receive an email with the option to pay for repair. If the damage is not caused by external source, the device will be repaired Under Warranty.

So if it's not covered under warranty, they'll ask if I wanna pay, right? That's what I took from it. In the end, a technician concluded that the phone needed a replaced component (which the representatives and I concluded would be the power button) but discovered that my phone had been opened because a pad was lifted from the I/F connector, so they shipped it back. No e-mail or anything. I would've liked to pay for the repair, but they didn't allow me to. I talked to a representative and she said that if the device was opened by me, that they wouldn't repair it. I guess if a repair isn't covered under warranty, I can pay, UNLESS I opened the device myself. So now, I'm unfortunately phoneless and can't afford a new phone. Bummer :/

Contacted the live chat again today and they told me that the cost of the repair would exceed the value of the device. It's a power button replacement, which I'm sure others have had performed by Samsung; they didn't just get a new device. Going to call voice support and see if I can convince them to let me pay for a repair.
Update: 11/12/13 Device came back with the power button repaired but the charger port isn't working
Update: 11/13/13 On hold for a supervisor. The representative was telling me it's a problem that may be the result that appears after damage.
Update: Later 11/13/13 After 1 hour and 36 minutes of working my way up the ranks, I was able to get to the Executive supervisor and they lifted the "unrepairable" status on my device, and asked me to send it in for a motherboard replacement. The repair service is gonna be expedited to a 3-day repair too, so hopefully I'll be up and running again soon. Everything went better than expected, and the supervisors were really helpful.
As of now consider my issue solved!
Have you contacted Tmobile about this?

I had the same problem with mine. Contacted their chat support and was instructed to perform a full reset. I was then told to contact their phone support if the problem persists which it did. The whole process of getting my phone RMA'd was pretty quick and they confirmed that it was a defect and indeed covered by warranty. Here's the email:

I had the same problem, I shipped my phone to texas to a person on Ebay and got it back in about a week. The phone has been working perfectly since and has been about 1.5-2 months. I'll attach the link if you want to use this route, it cost $30 plus shipping both ways. He's honest and quick. He doesn't seem to have the S3 power button listed anymore but I linked the profile instead. Maybe you can message him and see if he still does it.

Wow, thanks for that information. The repair should be covered under warranty, but because I opened the device, they won't repair it. Still working on finding out if they'll allow me to pay for a repair. Thanks for this though. They told me the repair would cost more than the device, and maybe this would be evidence that it in fact isn't.

That actually sounds like a really viable option. I was looking into local repair shops, but I think I may just have to give this guy a look. Really appreciate it!
Local guys usually don't do this job because it requires taking soldering off the motherboard and soldering a new piece on, very delicate work that requires expertise. If this guy doesn't do it then I would message doc holiday he referenced another more well known site that I can't recall and they charge a lil more but they will fix for sure. And they have a great reputation on xda. Keep us updated, I know the feeling it sucks. In the mean time you can tap on the power button when starting phone and that should alleviate the problem temporarily. Arty least you can get into phone this way.

Yes they do, I checked when I was looking for a solution for my problem. It was just a lil more expensive.
Good to know, thanks! @OP, mobiletechvideos.com does have a good reputation around here. Many have used them for S3 brick repairs.
But to be fair, from what I've seen of other, similar places, they usually all will offer much the same where quality is concerned. Most of them are probably xda members, and like most of us would not intentionally provide less than great service.
These are usually very small businesses, often run by a single owner, and are just trying to make a living at what they love! Of course some may be snakes and out to defraud you, so just be vigilant in checking reviews.

I actually found one local repair shop that does the repair for about 50 dollars, which I was considering. Otherwise it's this other eBay seller I'm looking at, whose reviews don't seem that bad. It'd most likely be this eBay seller, or the local shop, because if I decide to go with DocHoliday's recommendation, it'd be around the same price as my local shop due to shipping.
I'll be sure to update. I've used that solution, but it's actually VERY temporary. Sometimes the button "gets stuck" in the depressed state, even with little contact, and turns off :/

Thanks for the recommendation. Mobiletechvideos.com seems to charge for shipping TO them, so it may add up to around the same price as a local repair shop. So I'll most likely be using the local repair shop or this other eBay seller. Money's tight for me, so I may resort to the eBay seller, who seems to have good reviews. I really appreciate the advice though.
I had this problem with both my Galaxy S2's Hercules and skyrocket, using the information in this thread fixed it without having to pay. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1931310

Idk about that seller, he has many good reviews but some bad ones as well. also actually expects an average consumer to take their motherboard out themselves and ship it to them? I would go local if I were you but your choice.
I go local as well. Easier to hold them accountable for their work. And imo is easier to trust them when you can see them face to face.

Same problem this week
I experienced the same thing with my galaxy s3. It started in October but was not too bad because my case helped ease the problem. Anyways I called T-mobile and they are sending me a new one free of charge.
I just bought a tmo gs3 off of cl that had the depressed button problem. Take the battery out and put it back in and the phone boots without even touching the power button. I took it apart and hit the internal button with some electrical contact cleaner but it didn't help. So I took it apart again and got out the Dremel with a small fine grinding wheel. I took about 2 mm off the internal button.. Problem solved...

So a big update guys..
I received my phone back, and expected it to be in the same condition that I sent it in. On the repair statement in the box, it states that the phone is beyond repair and that the fail description is "GROSS ELECTROMECH DAMAGE-ABUSE". The odd thing is that my phone button works, when I thought they hadn't performed any repair at all. But now, my phone won't charge and won't be detected by the computer. I took the cable I was using and tried it with my old Samsung Moment, and it operates just fine. Before I sent it in for repairs, the USB port was operating just fine. I know this because right before I sent it in, I had to unroot it and flash it with a stock rom from Odin. The port was operating fine when I had sent it in.
Now, I'm wondering if they did perform a repair. In the repair logs, one technician says "SOLUTION: Replaced Component". This technician also notes that it came with damage on the sides.
The NEXT day, the log says that the unit did not pass the quality assurance check during the PBA inspection, that a pad was lifted on the I/F connector, and that the unit was beyond economical repair.
I feel like during the PBA inspection, they noticed that the USB port wasn't operating correctly, and then stated that it was B.E.R. I'm completely sure that the port was operating correctly prior to shipping it to them.
What's confused me this whole time was whether or not the power button was repaired or not, because the log later says it was B.E.R., so I was never sure. I plan to call them and find out, and if they DID indeed repair it, I feel as though this charging port issue was under their hands, because it was operating correctly when I shipped it.
I was happy that the power button seemingly magically cured itself, but now I'm irritated that the charging port is broken, which I feel like wasn't a fault on my end.

N7105-How hard is it to replace the Audio port jack?

Hi,
I have a Note 2 N7105 that has random statics when listening via the audio jack. A slight tap usually fixes this but it comes back quite often now. I use a pair of tweezers and have removed some lint that was in there. I read other online threads with the same problem, that's where I got the tapping it idea from. But I have also read that they replace the audio jack and it is still not working!
So I am fairly technical with phones. But ever since I opened my HTC HD2 phone before and shattered the screen (the hot glue was hard to remove) making it redundant, I am a little bit afraid of opening up phones with massive screens. I already have a spare audio jack port that I bought off ebay so I am all ready but just wanted to make sure that it is a fairly easy matter!
I re-flashed a stock 4.4.2 rom back on to my phone but I have the Knox 0x1 flag. But I have only had the phone for about 1 year 8 months (2 years manufacturers guarantee in the UK). Thinking whether I could try positing it to Samsung anyway, worse thing that will happen is they send it back? But it's not really a software related issue. Besides, the UK has the Sales of Goods Act consumer rights that overrules warranties, where devices should last up to 6 years, and this phone cost £500+ when it was released and it's barely been 2 years. Wonder if I could use this? However, I tried contacting Samsung before a few months ago twice about my audio port not working, and they refuse to fix it because of "wear and tear" and it's not a manufacturer defect. What a joke. But it turns out that the audio port was working and it was my earphones that stopped working haha.
I tried to go back to my carrier (EE UK) where I pay monthly but they told me to go to the Samsung website and get them to fix it.
I am not sure what my best option is. I've only just got a Note 3 so I simply want to get the audio port fixed to sell on.
Thank you for reading and I hope someone can tell me what the best option is and offer any advice. Cheers
Perhaps you can check with your bank ?
Sometimes they let you take out phone insurance for free if you have a bank/current account with them.
I know Halifax n Barclays do........

Thanks. But I don't take up on those insurance offers, just couldn't justify it . Now my choice is either to change it myself or try return it for warranty (although Samsung are a bit picky...).. Do you think EE should accept responsibility and do it for me? Just wondering whether anyone has had experience in opening the note 2 and replacing the audioport. If it's fairly easy with not much that can go wrong, I might give it a go.

Wifi + Bluetooth not enabling anymore

Dear Forum Members,
I don't know what to do anymore. I am at your mercy. Tried everything I can. Can't seem to solve it myself.
I bought me Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 SM-T800 1 1/2 years ago and was extremely happy with it. Everything worked like a dream. I rooted it after a few weeks because I wanted to get a network going. No problems at all. A few days ago I turned it on and I didn't have any Wifi and Bluetooth was also not turned on. I don't use Bluetooth but it was on at default. I tried working with my router, modem, you name it, it wasn't my connection, so then I tried the tablet itself. Some people said it was SideSync, so I removed that, didn't do anything. I was still using android 4.4.2 so I installed 5.0.2 unrooted and that didn't do anything. After that I wiped everything and went to factory default, no difference. In the end, I looked everywhere, even removed the back panel to see if a connection was loose but everything looks fine. I did another clean install from a firmware installed from the Samsung website to make sure and still, same problem.
I rooted the device, so my warranty is gone.
I don't know what to do now. I use the tablet a lot but mostly online but can't anymore.
I would be very grateful if someone could help. This tablet means a lot to me. My little Sammy :crying:
Nobody?
Edit: Have tried starting in safe mode and nothing changes.
It did work one morning for like half an hour for some reason. Very strange. Then it stopped working again. It does now sometimes show some networks in the area and bluetooth does work sometimes but it wifi and bluetooth disconnects immediately if you connect.
I was in the same situation as you. I ended up sending my device into Samsung for warranty repair. I sent out it last week, and I received it back Tuesday afternoon. Crazy thing was, when they sent it back, there was no paperwork in the box. *Yikes*

Thanks for sharing your experience, did it in the end get repaired?
Here is what happened with my device.
I contacted the shop and they wanted to send it to a verified repair shop and that I might need to pay money because I rooted my device. In the European constitution it says that if it is not caused by rooting, they can't void the warranty, so I mentioned that and they said it was true but the repair shop was the one who should make sure what the problem is, not them. But I found it a bit fishy so I searched on Twitter for a Samsung account and contacted a very nice woman on there. I asked here about my problem, said what the shop was going to do, she asked what the repair shop's name was and verified it was a good one. She even helped with some tests to see if some things wouldn't solve the problem. Asked her about the warranty and she told me about the European constitution law and that if it wasn't caused by a software problem, it shouldn't cost me anything.
The shop I was talking with saw me talking with them and I think they freaked out a bit. They sent me and the woman from Samsung a message what I wanted to do and I wanted to send it in for repair. I did this and a week later I got it back at no cost and the motherboard was busted. I did get paperwork with my package. Even got my original box back with it and my original cord. Even got a new USB cord for the trouble.
My Sammy is working like a charm again and I love it to bits! Samsung has greet service on Twitter and the repair service is also great!:good:

Oops.... I forgot to mention it... but yes my device was repaired. It had root going to the shop and they didn't say anything about it being rooted. I am just not exactly sure of what they fixed so I think I am going to call in tonight and see what they did to resolve the issue.
So far, so good with it.
Here's what I hate though.... there's 1000s of folks all experiencing this very same problem as what we were experiencing. My warranty is up in just a few days because i didn't purchase an extended warranty from the place I purchased it from (BestBuy). I don't even know how long the warranty is on whatever repairs that they did. *Yikes*
BUT, I am glad you were able to get your issue resolved as well. That's awesome!
I think it's a design flaw in the first few models. Most devices these days have problems at the beginning when they come out. Dare I mention the XBOX360 that was a problem for it's entire run. I had the luck of only having to repair one but I have known people who had to send in multiple or buy multiple new ones. I probably sound like a grandpa at 28 years old but they don't make things like they used to. They test things in the field on paying customers and that is horrible. Same even counts for pharmaceutical products, it's horrible. But people buy and if demand keeps asking, they keep pumping stuff out. It's not about making a product to be proud about, it's about money, and making money as fast as possible. It's understandable to a degree, but the extremes most companies go to is just ridiculous and the people they hurt with it is even worse. But the market is also way to competitive to not do those things. They would go bankrupt in a year or less if they would do it in a fair and honest way. The world isn't fair and honest. It's a bitter view on the world and the market but these wonderful devices get made in horrible conditions by people that get payed horrible wages commanded by people that get payed incredible wages. In the end, there have to be people that are on the losing side and that are often customers and laborers. And normal people can't win from a big company, whatever they do.
Sorry for the rant. I feel very strongly about injustice in jobs and the unfairness in the world. I really wish we could go back to a time where people are proud of the things they make and sell and everyone would profit from it in some way.
What I have noticed ever since my tablet returned is that my battery is lasting much longer. Maybe it's the new motherboard or they put in a new battery pack. Have you noticed this as well after the repair?

Repair for cracked screen

Has anyone had a cracked screen repaired? Google told me they don't do that because it's not covered under warranty. I get that I have to pay for it, but they said they don't repair that and I have to find a 3rd party. A repair shop told me the screen isn't available to order.
I find it hard ti believe that if the screen breaks that's just the end of it.
Thanks

As you can see from the attached tear down, this is a formidable task > https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Google+Pixel+C+Teardown/62277
I did a quick Google search and got zero results for replacement screen.
Formidable for me. But they're Google, manufacturer of the Pixel C. That would seem to put them in a unique position to know how to repair it. And they probably know where to get the screens because they make those too.
But what's really odd is that they didn't know who does repairs. I'm not exaggerating or embellishing. After she put me on hold for a while she said she didn't know and that I should try looking around at the mall.
I have a message with their forum and maybe I'll try calling them again. It has to be a mistake.
This just happend to me 2 weeks ago when I managed to drop my beutiful Pixcel C and destroy the screen. I was furious with myself. Screen still worked, touch was fully responsive, but it looked bloody horrible. I tried searching online also to no avail. In the end I contacted the Play Store support team by phone (I'm in Ireland, but I think it was a UK call centre I was talking to). I explained my situation to the rep, and he put me on hold for a few mins while he talked to technical support. When he came back, he asked me to email him a few photos to show the damage (he mailed me his address and asked that I just reply with the photos). Following day I got an email from a different rep, who said they were going to RMA my damaged tablet, and that they would send me new one by following through on a link they sent me to the play store where I could order the replacement, but the offer was only available for 24 hours. In the email, it did specify that I would not be charged for the replacement tablet, but failure to return the old one would mean my card be charged in full for the cost of the replacement. Also, "if it was determined that the damaged tablet wasn't a warranty defect, my card could be charged up to the cost of the replacement device". I sent another email to clarify this point to say that this WAS NOT a warranty issue, and I fully expected to pay the repair costs, but not up to the full value of the tablet. If this was the case, I would just be better off ordering a replacement tablet from the store as normal, because if I send back the damaged tablet (which still worked fine), get billed the full cost of the replacement unit, I still end up with one tablet but have paid full price for the new one......whereas if I just bite the bullet & order from the store, I pay the same amount and still have the old tablet as a spare? They never responded to this mail, and as the time was running out on the 24hr window for the offer......wisely or not, I pressed the button to order the replacment unit from the link they provided.
Google shipped the new tablet within 24hrs complete with return prepaid UPS labels & instructions. They put a hold for €509 on my c/card, but have not actually taken the money. The damaged tablet was recieved back at their wharehouse in Germany today (according to the UPS tracking info), but I haven't heard anything yet from Google about how much they're going to bill me. If they charge me the full cost, I will NOT be a happy camper, but currently, I love how they took care of me.
I will update again when I hear anything back about what they'll end up charging me. Hope this info might help.
Colm.
Colm, the wording you mentioned is there to handle issues like accidental damage [which yours is] being passed off as a warranty damage. but the emails are in your favor in that you fully explained the situation and google offered an exchange knowing it was accidental damage. i don't think it was worded specifically to your situation , rather all standard situations. this is to protect google from the cases were owners basically try to pass off accidental damage as warranty damage , which you did not attempt to do. whenever i contact google on product issues i use chat so i have a transcript. but you used email so basically no difference. i think google is handling your situation as a goodwill item meaning they will gain more in just sending a replacement via having a very happy customer than they would by having you unhappy and maybe not wanting to ever purchase another product.
If that turns out to be the case, never mind happy, I'd be bloody ecstatic! But, I won't get my hopes up till I get some kind of confirmation from the big G. And yeah, in all my communications, I make it very clear this was not a warranty issue, and I fully expected to pay something for the repair to the damaged device.
I'll post again here if/when I hear back from G.
C.
Google replaced my device. They said they were sending a refurbished unit with no charger, and they sent me a new retail package (with charger.)
I've had some grief with this tablet, but replacing it after I dropped and broke it is pretty awesome. And even though I've been okay with the little Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 I had replaced it with, I couldn't wait to get this back. I don't care if it's a little bit heavier than something else. I love my ginormous Pixel C.
Did you guys by an extra warranty or was it included?
My screen just got smashed. How and who did you contact at google? Hopefully I get the same response.
Any suggestions for current (Oct 2018) screen replacement ?
